My Emac just beeps at startup

My niece was using my Emac the other day and she said that all of a sudden it just shut down. When we tried to reboot it, all it does is beep at startup (about 20 times) and then it has the little folder on the screen that alternates between the question mark and a face. When I tried to boot off of the install disk it does boot up, but wont let me re-install the osX. It wont give me the hard drive as a option to install to. I went to the system profiler and it does show that the hard drive is there, but obviously something is wrong. Not really sure what to do and any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to Apple Discussions, bleachfix.
When you boot up from the OS X install disc, select Disk Utility from the utilities menu. What does it have to say about your hard drive?

My macbook air wont boot up. Just beeps every 5 seconds and a white light flashes on front of keyboard

That normally indicates an issue with system memory. The startup sequence can't complete the boot due to a memory issue. Take it in for service.

  • New Macbook Pro beeping on startup + showing progress bar

    Hi;
Yesterday I bought my new 13inch MacBook Pro. When I came to turn it on this morning, it first made a beep sound; then it showed the Apple logo with a progress bar under it. The bar made no progress, suddenly it rebooted again but without making any sound, and the Apple logo re-showed again with the bar. This happeded 3 times before the Mac booted.
    Any ideas?
Please help, I am new to Mac, and I'm Lovin' It.
    Thank you.
    Elias.

It is true; the past day I had updated my software and I turned it off. This all started happening the next day. I understand that it might be updating the EFI firmware, I remember I did install it; but the problem is that it happened twice in a row (I shut down the computer and re-turned it on again) and the same things happened. But it never happened again. I just wanted to know that my new MB is OK. (I am new to Mac and not familiar with MB beeping at startup, is it normal?).
    Thank you.
If the issue got fixed that means that the MacBook was updating its EFI. The "bong" sound is normal at start up, however the "beep" sound will be heard only when the EFI is update or has a problem.

  • Mac Mini won't boot it just beeps once

I have a MacMini 1.25 GHZ. When I try to start it, it just beeps loudly once and thats it. Nothing appears on the screen.
Before, this computer just showed a folder with a question mark. I tried resetting the PRAM and other normal procedures and nothing seemed to work. I thought the optical drive might have been the problem because this started happening shortly after inserting a CD.
So I opened it up and took out the CD and now I have the current problem.
    Can anyone help?
P.S. After beeping, if i press and hold any key the little light on the bottom right flashes brighter three times.

Repair the directory and see if it boots then. Follow my directions below*:

  • Computer just beeps when it's turned on

My computer screen went black: My screen goes black every time I turn it on I tried a bunch of things but it didn't work. I think the screen was just broken. It seemed to be coming on like normal, just without a screen.
Then I really messed it up. I pulled out the battery and followed the instructions under there to pull out... motherboards? Bad idea. Then when I put it all back together, every time I turned it on it would just beep... a lot.
I don't know if there's anything on the screen because the screen doesn't work.
At this point, I think the computer is broken. But I'd like to be able to at least get the files off. Any ideas? Is there some way I can fix this and hook up a backup to it? Is it worth it to try to bring it in to a computer fixing store?
    Thanks!

I suppose it's a memory trouble. Reseat memory sticks or get new memory and install them could solve the problem.

  • MacBook Pro won't start after changing RAM cards; just beeps.

MacBook Pro will not start after changing RAM cards.  It just beeps; then I force it to quit.

The three things that come to mind immediately are that the RAM card isn't seated properly (you should hear or feel a click when it is seated), the RAM is bad or marginal for that Mac model, or you didn't get the correct RAM type.

  • Won't start up, just beeps

So out of nowhere, my macbook decided to turn off, and now when I try to turn it on, it just beeps at me. At first it would just beep once every 5 or 10 second, but after I removed the battery and then tried it again, it beeps three times in a row every 5 or 10 seconds. I've tried rebooting the RAM (CommandOption+PR), but that did nothing. I can't find anything on the website as to what the beeping means. Thoughts?

Have you recently upgraded the amount of RAM in your MacBook ???
The 3 beeps are indicative of a RAM issue..

I have a slow startup or login, with numerious spinning wheels. Sometimes after a long ti,e I can sign into the computer and sometimes it just fails to startup or login. I have a MacBookPro OS X 10.7.5 from 2011. It became more serious recently as I think I might have let my battery run out I also tried to download the operating system to reinstall it but it allways stops around 1.4 GB out of 1.7 then the whell starts again.

Keep the MBP attached to the power adapter.
First try SMC and PRAM resets:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
Then try to boot the MBP in recovery (OPTION key down) and select the recover partition.  Select Disk Utility>First Aid and verify and repair the HDD.

        Hello llm007!
That is quite a strange issue. What make & model phone do you have? When did this begin? Are you able to make & receive calls? You can troubleshoot this issue http://vz.to/12TLCsR on our website to get things working as quickly as possible.

  • One beep on startup means RAM or HDD problem?

Hi, hope someone can help with this.
When I press the power on button I get a single beep. This only happens when my macbook has been switched off for quite some time e.g. overnight or after getting back from work I power up and get a beep but if I shut it down and power up again it doesn't happen. The beep is not continuous and doesn't occur when using OSX.
Recently I installed a new HDD - 500GB western digital. I checked it with disk utility and onyx and they both say it's working fine. I also re-seated the RAM (2GB) and they both show up in system profiler.
Now everything points to the new HDD as being the cause as I never had this problem before so is this beep a sign its dying already? I did notice on disk utility it's SATA 2. Could this be the cause?
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks

Perhaps having the RAM show up in the System Profiler vs the POST is not exactly the same info...one beep should indicate..(no RAM)

I installed RAM on a friends MacBook...it just beeped..took more force to seat it correctly..I am not sure if your mention of reseating the RAM was a trouble shooting step ?

  • Dx2300, beep on startup

I bought a DX2300 microtower used. It worked beautifully at the sellers house. We removed the wires/cables and I took it home. When I reassembled everything I got no action on the monitors(dual), no lghts on the wireless keyboard nor mouse. The CPU makes a single, long beeping on startup. The only thing I did to it was clean out the dust from the front vents and fan units. I believe the seller had a 1T byte external harddrive, but other than that, II believe it's all the same. Any suggestions?
    This question was solved.

I went inside and unplugged and reset each cable I could. It started up smooth and other than the black screen telling me it hadn't been shup down correctly - all works fine. I was able to get my wireless internet set up. All is well in my world. Thank you very much for the help.

If the reset doesn't work, you have to force the iPad into Recovery Mode
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
    3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button.
    5. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad. Data will be lost.
