My (empty!) photo library is using 2,6 GB of space

Earlier, on iOS 5, I synced my whole iPhoto-library from my Macbook to my iPhone 4 (32 GB). It was about 14.000 pictures, and used up almost 16 GB of space on my phone.
After the upgrade to IOS 6, my pictures got messed up. All my Events and Albums were gone, but every single picture was still on the device.
I connected the iPhone to iTunes, told it to NOT sync pictures (and delete those on the device). And ran it.
After that, I turned off Photo Stream on my iPhone.
And at last, I manually deleted those few pictures which was left on the phone.
I now confirm that its completly empty. Not a single picture left on the phone.
I have also rebooted a couple of times.
But still, my Photo Library uses about 2,6 GB of space on my phone! (According to whats shown in Settings -> General -> Use -> Pictures and Camera)
Its broken down to this:
Cameraroll : 0 byte
Photo Library : 2,6 GB
Photo Stream: 5,0 kB
(Sorry if not all menu items are written correctly - I use a different language than english)
So, whats using 2,6 GB on my phone? And how do I free that space?!?

Hello violetsareblue,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
To help resolve this issue where your iPhone is showing storage space being taken up by photos that do not exist, I'd like you to please follow the directions below to reinstall iOS on your iPhone.
Make sure that you have iTunes 12 or later on your computer.
Put your device in recovery mode.
When you get the option to restore or update, select Update. This will reinstall iOS without erasing your data.
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond or doesn't turn on - Apple Support
Have a good one,

  • Why is my iPhone Camera Roll using 10.0 GB but my Photo Library only using 6.3 GB?

When I look at usage in my iPhone, Camera Roll is using 10.0 GB, but Photo Library is only using 6.3 GB. I do not have Photo Stream enabled. Why the difference?

In my case, Camera Roll is just the pictures taken on my phone and the remainder of the photos on my phone were synced from my computer via iTunes and are under "Photo Library". If you go to Photos and then tap Albums at the bottom right, it will show which pictures are in the Camera Roll. My Camera Roll usage is much smaller than Photo Library as I only have 2 pictures there since I regularly import them to my computer where I have more control and extra backup capability. I then sync back some that I want to also have on the phone.

I have a 190GB ever increasing music library (I rip one to one no compression) and a 300gb photo library.
So..question Will it be easier to set up OS X Server on the mini and access my itunes library via that?
Is it easy to do so?
I only rip via the Imac, so the library is connected to that and shared to the laptops...how does one go about making the imac automatically connect to the music if i transfer all music to the server ?

I have a much larger itunes collection (500gb/ 300k songs, a lot more photos, and several terabytes of movies). I share them out via a linux server. We use apple TV for music/video and the bottleneck appears to be the mac running itunes in the middle. I have all of the laptops (macbook pros) set up with their own "instance" of itunes that just references the files on the server. You can enable sharing on itunes itself, but with a library this size performance on things like loading cover art and browsing the library is not great. Please note also I haven't tried 8.x so there may be some performance enhancements that have improved things.
There is a lag on accessing music/video on the server of a second or so. I suspect that this is due to speed in the mac accessing the network shares, but it's not bad and you never know it once the music starts or the video starts. Some of this on the video front may be the codec settings I used to encode the video.
I suspect that as long as you are doing just music, this isn't going to be an issue for you with a mini. I also suspect that you don't need OSX server at all. You can just do a file share in OSX and give each machine a local itunes instance pointing back at the files on the server and have a good setup.

  • Photo library albums and folders taking up more space

If you create albums and folders on photo library it appears to duplicate the pictures and take up more space.  Is there any way to avoid this since you can't group pictures otherwise?

Change your import settings to 128 AAC (assuming that's what you want - I'd choose MP3s, personally, since they will work in other programs and portable devices).
The previous default is AAC encode, High Quality (128kbps)
Then you can just right-click on selections and choose "Create AAC version". It will say "Create MP3 version" if you decide to use thoe import settings.
Of course you already have an AAC version, but itunes will convert it to the lower rates. I just tried it on the free single of the week, "Boarded Doors" and the file size went down from 6.9MB to 3.2MB.
You can choose to convert an album at a time - you don't need to do it song-by-song.
I suppose you could do your entire library in one fell swoop, but frankly with the size of my library, I think itunes would crash at some point. Also my hard drive would fill up. ; )
Note - this makes a COPY and does not replace the original file. So you'll need to delete the originals and make sure they go to the recycle bin.
Still, it's faster than feeding all those CDs in the drive!
So that is another reason for doing one CD at a a time, to make sure the copies get made and that the duplciates get gone.

  • HT204655 Photos library eats up huge amount of disk space

After upgrading to 10.10.3, I imported my photos into Photos app. All my photos are stored on a partition (HFS+ filesystem was applied) other than where OS X is installed, the size in total of this folder is about 36 giga. I checked off the option for copying the items into Photos library before importing, however, by finishing the import, the Photos library showed a size of 33 giga, the resources/modelresource folder contributed the highest proportion. I checked into that folder, found all files imported successfully were copied here. What should I do to solve the problem? Thanks!

Just to add a couple of suggestions:
If you already have the media from your camera saved to your computer, you can check Leave Files in Place in the Import dialog. FCPX will create pointers to your media and won't copy them to your event.
Depending on the format of your clips and the complexity of your project, you may not need to create Optimized and/or Proxy media.
And as digibudll said, deleting renders when your project is finished and delivered will often save a lot of space. That can be done from within the application.

  • Cannot open iPhoto. I get this command, " you can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.

I tried downloading iPhoto library manager as suggested by a pervious post, but even with Safari and Firefox it will not download.  The dmg image disappears before I can click on it and I get a command that says "it does not work with this architecture". I'm using a G-5 Power PC Mac running OS 10.5.8.  Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Likely that is for IntelMacs only.
If the iPhoto Library was ever "touched" by a later version of iPhoto, then you get the can't open message.
    Create a new photo library
                               Quit iPhoto.
Hold down the Option key as you open iPhoto.
In the window that appears, click Create New.
Type a name and choose a location to store the new photo library.
Click Save.                           The iPhoto Source list shows your new, empty photo library. Any photos you import are added to this library.                                                      You can switch to another library you’ve created at any time.

  • My Photo Library says it is using 2.3 GB of storage, but I only have 30 pictures in my camera roll and nothing else.

I ran out of storage on my iPad Air, so I attempted to clean it up to make more room.  I deleted all but 30 pictures from the iPad's camera roll.  I have no other albums.  I even deleted the 'recently deleted' photos in case.  I restarted.  I turned off photo stream.  It still says that my Photo Library is using 2.3 BG and my shared Photo Stream is using 4.6 KB.  When i look st my photos on my computer (attached to the iPad with USB0 it says that my photos only take up 42.9 MB.  I just want to get all of the storage space I can.

    Any videos in Camera Roll?
Make sure you are reading GB and not MB. At the top of Usage what are the "Available" and "Used" numbers?
You should also try a Reset which could make the numbers display propperly:
From the Home screen double tap the Home button to view the multitasking bar at the bottom. Tap and hold an app at the bottom till the icons wiggle with the minus button visible. Tap the button to close all apps then tap the Home button to get back to the Home page. Press and hold the Sleep button till you see the Slide to power off message and power it off. Once powered down completely press and hold the sleep button till the Apple icon appears.
I have had an instance were I had to Restore my iPad due to photos not properly deleting from the Photo Library. Restore using a Backup which should return your 2 photos in Camera Roll. If it still doesn't fix it you'll have to Restore as new.

  • HT204570 Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable. I the error message from iPhotos after the so called upgrade to Photos which left me with a blank screen

Photos upgrade a disaster. No images appear in Photos. Able to re-establish all images in iPhoto only to have the app crash after uploading new photos from iPhone. Impossible to reload photo library as it needs 161 GB of space. The non functioning Photos library is 107 GB and the original iPhotos library from which it was created is 118 GB. I only have 146 GB available on this 1 TB drive but I am reluctant to trash Photos library in case iPhotos is truly damaged.

    And your question is?

  • ICloud Photo Library won't sync all photos

I've enabled iCloud Photo Library on my Macs & iOS devices... and have noticed that all my photos are not being sync'ed to iCloud... and the ones in iCloud are not being sync'ed to all my devices. (I'm running Mac OS X 10.10.3 on the Macs and iOS 8.3 on the iPad/iPhone.)
In my master Library on my iMac, I have 20,233 Photos and 344 Videos. According to the Photos app, all have been uploaded to iCloud.
However, according to iCloud - only about half of those photos are uploaded.
(I have plenty of storage on iCloud... I have paid for 200GB and am only using about 40GB.)
On my Macbook - I started the Photos app with an empty photo library, and then turned on iCloud Photo Library. On that computer, it reports a different number of photos - 9,923 photos. And, it too is supposedly "updated completely"
When I browse the Photos on an iOS device, it's about the same as the MacBook - but not exactly.
Anyone have any ideas here? I would expect all the photos from the iMac to show up on all devices.
Is there a log file somewhere I can examine to understand what is being uploaded and what isn't?
    Thanks!

I managed to fix the problem articulated above. I think only photos that are copied into your Photos Library can be synced via iCloud. And, the approximately ~10,000 photos missing from iCloud were not in my Library.
On the iMac Photos Library, I selected all the photos (Cmd-A) and choose File->Consolidate from the menu... and this popup emerges:
I clicked "Copy" which apparently copies all the original images from my Pictures folder into the iCloud Library itself. Once this was done ... it uploaded missing files. Now - on all my devices I see the exact same number of photos and videos.

  • How does a family share an iCloud Photo Library?

I have a wife and two kids, all with iDevices. We each have our own Apple ID, and we have a fifth Apple ID for the family. I'd like to have all four devices see and contribute to one iCloud Photo Library, preferably using that fifth Apple ID. Can I do this?
As a note, I do this with the iTunes Store, happily. Apple allows you to set the iTunes Apple ID as a different one than the Apple ID used for everything else. I don't see that functionality with the iCloud Photo Library.
We could, perhaps, cobble together some solution using sharing to the family library and whatnot, I guess. That may be the only way, but it seems clunky. I will figure it out if I have to.
    Thanks!
    Danny.

I do want my daughter to be able to download apps or updates to existing apps even when she is not with me, but that doesn't seem possible without sharing passwords.
That is indeed not possible. She'll either need to re-acquire all those apps through her own iTunes Store account, you'll have to give her the password to your account, or you'll have to do all the updating for her.
    Regards.

  • ICloud Photo Library on a Mac

While we're waiting for the new iCloud Photo Library to make it to OSX, I discovered an interesting way to get photos loaded on your Mac into your iCloud Photo Library.  The bad news is it won't handle videos yet.
Assuming you have all your photos in iPhoto, you must first set up a copy on your hard drive.  Select the photos you want to put in iCloud Photo Library in iPhoto, then choose Export from the File menu. In Kind, select Original to preserve the quality of your photos, then click Export and select the folder where you want to dump the photos.
Next, sign in to iCloud, click Photos (Beta), then click Upload.  Select all the photos you just exported and click Open.  After the upload completes, you should begin to see these photos on your other devices - iPad and iPhone - if you have set them to use the iCloud Photo Library.  After you finish the upload, you can then delete the exported photos to save space on your hard drive.

Your Mac will only show you the images in the Photo Streams. To see your iCloud Photo Library (Beta) use the Photos.app on the iCloud webpage.
    https://www.icloud.com
or,if you want to upload to iCloud Photo Library (Beta), use
    https://beta.icloud.com
When the Photos.app for Mac will have been released early next year, you will be able to browse iCloud Photo Library (Beta) from the Photos.app on your Mac.

  • Mac storage full during upload to iCloud Photo Library

    MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2013)
    1.3 GHz Intel Core i5
    4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 5000 1536 MB
    OS X 10.10.3
I'm uploading my Photos Library to the iCloud Photo Library because I don't have enough space left in my Mac (around 7 GB left).
When I started uploading, it went down to 3 GB, and now stopped uploading because Photos is telling me that "Your Mac Storage is full. This Mac is no longer updating because there is not enough space to store optimized versions of your photos and videos."
I don't understand why it's taking up space when it's supposed to minimize space taken by my library.
I have upgraded my iCloud Storage to 200GB, so there should be no problem with that (iPhoto Library is only ~120GB)
    Would appreciate any help!

Hey benjfromlewes. Thanks for helping out!
Something pretty neat seems to happening when Photos creates its library from iPhotos because my machine didn't have anything like enough storage to achieve this (I had about 15 Gig free, and my iPhotos library was about 100 Gig). I suspect that it Photos probably shares the images files with iPhoto in some way, but I don't know. Anyway – removing the iPhoto library did still fee up lots of space for me.
I was thinking about deleting the old iPhoto Library, but then (like what you think) it seems that Photos and iPhoto are sharing files, even though they're separate. Because I only had 7 GB left when I updated to Photos and that created ~100 GB library, so it's impossible that I have an invisible extension.
I can't wait to delete it though, but I think I'll wait until after uploading everything to the cloud--just to be extra sure.
I'm don't know why Photos increases its storage requirement during the upload phase. Perhaps it has to keep all the original images locally until they are all uploaded, rather than removing the high quality images as it goes along. I've decided to keep the high resolution images locally anyway now: they're useful for printing and such.
It's working again now, I deleted some movies and restarted. This increased my space to 5.5 GB. I've been monitoring it since and noticed that Photos brought it down to 4 GB, going up and down slightly from there. But it hasn't stopped since. Hoping it'll continue on like this and not require any more space.

  • Problem deleting photo library

    Hi,
I'm trying to free up space on my phone but have noticed when managing storage the photo library is using 7.5GB, however all photos have been deleted?
Any ideas how to delete the photo library?
    Thanks in advance

  • Cannot open Photo.library of other Mac User.

Running Yosemite, and Photos 1.0 (Dutch version). As advised elsewhere, in order to allow Photo library being used by 2 users of same MAC, I created a 3rd 'shared data' user, to put shared Photo data. So with 1 of the users on MAC, I imported (old) iPhoto library in Photos, went fine, and copied the Photo.library file on the 'shared data' folder under folder Pictures. I created proper authorizations for both users to access this library. Now from the user by which I created this net Photo.library, I can open this library OK, but from the other user (same authorizations) I cannot open the library, error is 'Photo cannot restore permission'. I run the checkdisk program, run the program to restore permissions, but did not help. When I try to open this library on the 'shared data' user's folder from Finder, error says it cannot import pictures from the library. Thanks for advice.

2 disks, and buy a software to backup one disk to the seagate raid 1 ... sounds complicated to me, TimeMachine can't backup network disks. Fact is though that I can access the foto library from 1 other user on the MAC, so it isn't so that accessing other user's  library doesn't work. But it only works for 1 user apparently. Clearly not very well thought through by Apple.
