My ethernet connection is sometimes slow

Sometimes my ethernet (CAT 6 cable) slows down. Please help with set ups and diagnostics.

Yea, I have tried two different ethernet cables. Today the ethernet connection completely stopped working. It still says the ethernet cable is connected, but now I can't access the internet at all.
I know Verizon says its my computer, but the modem I have is pretty old. We got in when DSL first came out. Do you think that would cause issues?
My friend has the exact same Macbook as me, she also has Verizon for internet service, but a newer modem and it worked fine. She said she just set up like you normally would and she has never had ANY issues with it.

  • AirPort Extreme loses ethernet connection

I am running about 20 or so base stations in my school and every once in a while, a couple of the stations loose their ethernet connection. They are still broadcasting wirelessly, but they disconnect from the network. The stations are running fw5.6 and my clients are running 10.4.2 or WinXP SP2. The only way to fix the problem is to power cycle the base station. I also have the older graphite stations which work fine, which leads me to think that this is not a network issue.
    Any suggestions?

I also lose ethernet connection. Sometimes once a day, other times 10 times per day. The other day I was so frustrated about losing my connection that I just walked away from it, without cycling power. When I came back (about 30 minutes later) from my cooling-off period, I found that the connection was back. So, with my AirPort Extreme, cycling power is not the only solution. It's not an acceptable solution though.
I was wondering what you mean by your statement, "They are still broadcasting wirelessly, but they disconnect from the network." I'm relatively new to this stuff and this baffled me, which isn't hard to do.

  • Ethernet Connection Randomly Dropping w/ AirPort Extreme Router

My wired ethernet connection drops sometimes randomly, but I think it tends to do it more if I'm in an audio chat with someone on iChat (not sure). Here is my setup:
FiOS ISP (always been reliable in the past) -> AirPort Extreme (router) -> Cisco gig-e switch (reliable) -> 2008 Mac Pro running Snow Leopard (no I do not use wifi) (my computer) -> Internet sharing to my brother's computer via ethernet port 2 (set up after the new router was installed, but problem happened without it)
It seemed to start doing this once I switched the router to AirPort Extreme. We were using the one Verizon gave us, a junky Actiontec router that was messing with our DNS and port forwardings but wasn't dropping my computer's connection randomly.
I have it set to use DHCP. When it drops, other things have connection, just not my computer. It drops for about 30 seconds then comes up. I've already tried rebooting the router and the switch. I suspect that something is funny with the DHCP because I rarely get the message that my computer's name has already been taken (by itself!), which has always happened even with the old router. Nothing is stealing my address. Anything else I should try?

    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

  • Ethernet connection very slow.FIOS.. Help

All of a sudden, when I turned my mac on today and booted up Firefox, my connection was incredibly slow(almost taking 1-2 minutes to load a normal page). Some pages aren't even loading. It seems very out of the ordinary
-I figured maybe it was just Firefox, so I turned on Safari...nothing
-I figured it was disk space, so I freed up 18 gigs of 80...nothing
-I figured it was the ethernet cable, so i ran a network diagnostic check...it said My internet connection was fine
-I figured maybe I had a bad wire or something, so I plugged in in another room where another Computer regularly plugs in...still slow.
-The other computer currently plugged into the router is still going strong.
-I tried resetting it, by turning the router off and letting it set....nothing
-I'm not sure if it matters but the cable I use, is used for both my xbox360 and my mac...and it works fine with xbox live. So Im assuming the connection is good.
-I ran Clam, and I can't find any trojans(or any files to my knowledge of being corrupt)
    Can anyone help me out?

I took mine in yesterday and payed $80 for them to look at it because I don't have warranty anymore, they told me that it may be a router issue. I took the computer to my girlfriends house where she has a Time Capsule and it worked amazing. So be careful taking your computer to the shop. They may not be able to help you that much.

  • ITunes 10.6.3.25 on ethernet connection loses airport express speakers but iPhone 4 airplay works

    Hi,
I have started experiencing a problem this past week (Aug 2012) that I see sometimes reported here.  When I run iTunes 10.6.3.25 on a Win7 machine that is connected by ethernet to my router, the airport express speakers would regularly disappear.  I can always connect to these airport express via airplay from my iPhone 4.  In fact when the airplay speakers disappear from iTunes on the ethernet-connected machine, I can reliably make them reappear by turning on the Music app on the iPhone.  But after a while the airplay speakers would disappear again.  On a Win7 laptop connected via wifi to the network the same version of iTunes seems so far not to exhibit the same problem.
Has anyone discovered what the underlying problem is or found a solution?

I ran into the specific problem in another thread.  There are more than 100 connections from the apple TV's to iTunes.  You can do a netstat -a (windows or Mac), and verify the problem.  iTunes is smart enough to stop allowing more than 100 connections but stupid to allow the ATV to create so many connections.
Now for what you really want!  Set all of your ATVs to wifi only.  Even setting the iTunes host to wifi might help also.  I think that wifi is more unreliable, and forces connections to drop, keeping the count under 100.
I also turned off ip v6.  That could help you also.  I originally had problems on a Mac mini, and built a windows 7 box to try to fix the problem.  The wifi trick worked on both platforms.  Several of us have bug reports into apple.  I have a wired house also, and am very angry to NEED to use slow wifi to overcome this problem.  The ATV gen 3 has been able to keep up with 1080p over wifi, so it doesn't hurt too much.  What really hurts is spending over 40 hours troubleshooting this bug.

  • Why is TC router sometimes slow?

I have a Macbook Pro 2010 that connects to a Time Capsule wirelessly. Sometimes I get 10mb download but sometimes only 5mb. I have a Vista desktop that connects via wire to the TC. It always gets 10mb download even when the MBP is slower. I'm guessing this is more an issue with the TC and not the ISP. What would cause such large fluctuations in speed or how can I troubleshoot it?

There are so many different and related things that affect wireless connection speed that is difficult to name specifics without actually being at your location.
First, you cannot really compare a direct ethernet connection to a wireless connection. Ethernet will always be faster and more stable. It does make some sense to compare one ethernet connection to another on a network if you are testing things to make sure all the cables are working correctly.
Wireless connection speed is affected primarily by the following things:
o Distance of the computer to the router. Speed falls off with distance.
o Any obstructions in the signal path (a normal wall in a home will absorb 20-25% of the signal. A ceiling, which is thicker, will absorb more.) Lower signal strength = lower connection speeds
o Other electronics that may be nearby, cordless phones, other wireless networks in the neighborhood, wireless security systems in the neighborhood, microwave transmissions, the list is almost endless of possible causes.
If I power up an old cordless phone and base station that I no longer use, and move it anywhere within 20-25 feet of my router or computer, the wireless speeds drop immediately and fluctuate up and down. Sometimes, the internet connection is lost if the cordless phone is closer to the router.
That is why I no longer use cordless phones in the house. I'm not saying this is your issue, but it's a fact that cordless phones cause all kinds of problems for wireless networks. And it can be the neighbor's phone causing the problems as well.

  • Since upgrading to Yosemite I am getting frequently "safari can't open the page (blank) because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection this sometimes occurs when the server is busy. wait and then try again"

Since upgrading to Yosemite on my iMac I am frequently getting "safari can't open the page (blank) because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection this sometimes occurs when the server is busy. wait and then try again". This is with both a WiFi and Ethernet connection. The server is working fine from other devices using WiFi onto it such as iPhones, iPads, MacBook (which is also on Yosemite) so don't believe its an issue with the server.
I am also noticing page load very slowly when this problem is not occurring.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Ethernet connectability completely frozen-out by frozen SES-mode; WTR54GS

On a reset i accidentilly hit the SES button, now on my ethernet connection, the "Secure Easy Setup" button is frozen white. i've browsed th web, found other people have encountered same problem.
i've spent probably 100 hours, trying many fixes, including your company's suggestions -- to no avail! (note: multiple reset attempts still won't fix this).
my PC and ethernet card work fine on other products, it's just that wtr54gs has now frozen me out by your proprietary SES-mode. i've tried, via the wireless set-up, assigning fixed ip ( e.g. : 192.168.16.100) to my ethernet + your suggsted 192.168.16.50 to re-flash firmware -- nothing works! can't even get a dhcp ip from wtr54gs,because the frozen SES-mode has my ethernet connectability completely frozen-out.
re-flash firmware won't go on wirelessly either, a "failure" message appears like "not suficient system resources" -- **bleep**! -- on my Windows task manager networking screen i see i'm sending megabits of
firmware data, but the wtr54gs only picks up about 10% of the sent amount -- seems the wtr54gs can't handle the speed my wireless adapter is sending it ( also connection is strong, i'm 4 feet away from it ). i don't know how to force data rate to go slower ( on ethernet card i've reduced rate + to half-duplex, but, of course that a no go, since the wtr completely has my ethernet connection frozen-out in the first place, my original concern!).
i bought a D-link DWL-G730AP travel router, hoping theirs would be better, but it's very shoddy, very poor reception and difficult interface. i'm returning that. i long for the days when my Linksys product used

i used to use wtr54gs as a client-mode, connected to my PC via the ethernet connection, and the wtr54gs incoming internet connection was set to "wireless" -- all woked great, until this freezing-out problem.
if the SES-mode is internally permanently freezing me out on ethernet connectability, it appears i'm going to have to get a replacement ( as, other people on the web, similarly-situated, have stated).
my original purchase was about $60, but i see Amazon is recently selling the wtr54gs for $180!! -- i'm NOT buying a replacement at that cost!! please, either help me fix my frozen wtr54gs, or, since i'm

  • Ethernet connection repair on G3 B&W

After lightning struckour driveway, I have lost the ability to connect to the internet. Other applications are working. My other mac connects fine. What do I need to repair the ethernet connection?

    Hi, Jimbo -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
How is the machine connected to the net? Dialup, or broadband? If broadband, is it through a hub, switch, or router?
Start by checking the hardware items not shared by the other machine - for example, if a common router is used, and the other machine connects, the router is probably okay. Just to be sure, though, try using the port on it that the other Mac uses - sometimes a voltage surge can blow out just one port on a device such as a router.
In particular, check all cables - swapping out with known-good ones is often the easiest way.

  • Ethernet connection problems

I am trying to set up ethernet connections between my Beige G3, my son's G3 iBoook, and a NEC SilentWriter 95 printer (using a Farallon EtherMac adapter). Both Macs are using Jaguar version 10.2.8. Up until recently, I had a crossover cable between the Beige G3 and the printer adapter, and was able to print just fine. I am now trying to connect all three nodes using an ethernet switch. Neither Mac can find the printer at all, and things are hit-and-miss trying to get the Macs to see each other on the network. The Beige G3 can usually see the iBook in the Connect to Server dialog, but when I try to connect, I get a -36 error code (sometimes a -5000 error code). The cables test out fine, and the link lights for both ports are lit on the switch. I have tried several iterations of rebooting, power-cycling, and manual address setting--all for naught.
Any advice on what to check, or how to diagnose the root cause?
    Thanks,
    Pete

The 169.254.xxx.yyy addresses should work as long as the subnet mask it assigned is 255.255.0.0. The subnet mask has a 1-bit for every binary bit that should be looked at to decide whether two IP addresses are on the same subnet. To communicate, the Macs must appear to be on the same subnet. If it does not do this automatically, you will need to set manual IP addresses.
The EtherMac adapter is an AppleTalk device. It does not have an IP address. It uses the Ethernet cable to talk AppleTalk protocol, just as the other devices use the Ethernet cable to talk IP protocol. They do not disrupt each other, but cannot be directly translated back and forth. Your Macs are also talking AppleTalk protocol onto the Ethernet cable when they go to print.
If you can get file sharing working and stable, then you should try power off the EtherMac adapter and the Printer, power up the printer and wait a minute after the lights stop flashing, and then power up the Ethermac. Although this device is a little better than the AsanteTalk at re-acquiring devices that drop out, it occasionally has the same problem and must be powered up last.

  • Gigabit Ethernet connection

Is the only current option for an Ethernet connection for a MacAir the USB adaptor? I've seen where the Sonnet thunderbolt adaptor will be coming but I can't find it for purchase. I'll be using my MAP mainly connected to a hard line and fear it's going to be too slow. The laptop isn't an option due to travel.

The Sonnet Thunderbolt Adapter is not available yet.
But unless you have a really super speed internet connection or are doing a lot of machine to machine transfers then the gigabit over 10/100 speed of the Apple USB adapter.
The Apple Adapter is rated as 10/100 Mbps. The USB 2.0 port itself is rated at 480Mbps though it has a lot of overhead. Both of these should be faster than your ISP connection unless you are very lucky.
802.11g WiFi speeds should be comparable to the USB Ethernet speed.
802.11n WiFi speeds could be faster to the USB Ethernet speed.
Again, both of these should be faster than your ISP connection unless you are very lucky.
The 10/100 Mbps speed from a practical standpoint will only make a visible difference for machine to machine transfers where the other devices are 10/100/1000 Mbps capable.

3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

  • Configure Airport via ethernet connection

    Hi everyone,
Is there a way to connect to and adminster Airport Extreme base station using a physical (ethernet) connection? I could have sworn I've done this before but cannot seem to do it now and when I try, Airport Utility simply says it cannot find any base stations (its obviously only looking over wireless).
The reason I ask is that the router is apparently 802.11n capable however whenever I set it to use Wireless N my laptop cannot detect the network. My laptop uses a Broadcom 43225 802.11b/g/n wireless card.
Because I can't get the PC and Aiport to speak to each other over a phyical connection, the only way to get back on the network is to reset the router using the reset button, meaning I have to reconfigure the network every single time.
Anyway I'm blabbing on but if anyone has any theories as to why I cant detect a wireless N network I'm all ears, but my main question is can I connect physically to Airport Base Station?
    Thanks.

You must use the older version of AirPort Utility on a PC to administer the AirPort Express devices, if you do not have a Mac using a 5.x version of AirPort Utility.
When you say that your ISP changed your sign in credentials, we assume that you mean to say that you have a new name and password for your wireless network. Would that be correct?
If yes, then you will need to reset each of the AirPort Express devices back to factory default settings and then set them up again to join the new wireless network there.
Power off the Express for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button on the Express first, and keep holding it in for another 10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the Express
Release the reset button after the hold period, and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
The Express is now ready to be reconfigured again to join your "new" network.
Open AirPort Utility, click on the Express, and then click Continue to follow the guided setup.
Reset and configure the other Express devices the same way.

  • Cisco 3750x no ethernet connection

    Hi,
I seems to have a weird problem whereby clients are unable to get an ethernet connection (Port no LED lit/not connected) when using mac.  Sometimes there is connection after multiple insert/disconnect using the same cable to the Mac client. This has also be tested with a direct connection between the client and switch (without going thru the backbone cabling). If I was to try using Windows client, there does not seems to have such issue.
Further observation; from the switch; if a shut and no shut was performed on the port connected to the client, it would cause the connection to be "UP". Not too sure if anyone may have seen similar issues of unable to get connection "UP"? The firmware on the switch is running 15.2(1)E2.
    Any suggestion is appreciated.

You've got a 3750X?  Good.  This means you can test the cable run using TDR.

  • Ethernet connection shows openzone

I having great issues with my broadband suddenly been very slow.  I cant load a webpage to test the connection speed such is the slow speed it is running at.
I have a HH2 and its connected through ethernet connection.
To my knowledge i havent changed any settings.
i have noticed that when it picks up the ethernet connection it shows as openzone-h 2.
I have spoken with bt help desk and at first they said there was a miss match on the broadband line.  Though they couldnt explain what one of these was. They rest the broadband line and said their systems were showing speeds of around 6mbps.  left it a few days and still no joy.  Again spoke with them they said there was another miss match and they would reset it.
Is it something simple my end ie settings are wrong etc.
I have changed microfilters, adsl cables, ethernet cables.  even tried wireless connections and used all 3 sockets in the house.  I just cant get the pc to connect to the homehub full stop wirelessly.
any help would be good thanks

sorry but are you trying to connect to the hub wireless or ethernet cable?
If you are using the ethernet cable have you disabled the wifi card first?  if you are trying wireless and getting openzone then go to youe wireless connections and delete all previous coonnections, reboot and try to find your hub ssid not fon/openzone and connect.  see if that then connects to your router
