That's what I thought too, then I bought this USB Ethernet adapter and on the package it says :
"Compatible only with MacBook Air Computers"... so I am not sure if I should open it.
When it was originally released it only worked with the MacBook Air which came with a special version of OS X that supported this adapter. Apple seem to have since built this support in to versions of OS X 10.6 and later for all Macs.
If you have an older version of OS X e.g. 10.3 to 10.5 then an unofficially driver is available here http://www.sustworks.com/sb_site/downloads.html
There are also third-party USB to Ethernet adapters with their own drivers like this one http://www.kanexlive.com/usb3lan

  • Ethernet port not connected - airport working - not able to get online

Hi, new poster. Never had an issue with our beloved iMac 20 inch Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz - 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. It's old but it serves us, we hope it's not shot. Power goes out a lot here, system has surge protection but no battery backup. System just goes down without being shutdown properly. We used wired Ethernet. No the problem. Last time power just went out, the system would not boot up. I searched around and found out to use the DVD to verify/repair disk. It finally did and system now boots up. However, it says the Ethernet is not connected. It is. I tried three different cables that worked with our laptop and two different routers, all that happens is the light on the router flashed on and off. While on the network status in sys pref displays no cable detected vs. Cable connected but not connected to internet. Assumed the port was shot. OK, turned on the airport. Connects, gets DHCP assigned IP address and/or accepts static IP but when we launch Safari says it can't connect. Tried Opera browser, same thing. Sophos AV also can't connect for updates. All these network configurations had worked previously until this last power outage. Searched for help, as I don't want to waste peoples time. Found out about these things that follow: SMC RESET - PRAM RESET - Delete connection and recreate same - Network Diagnostics - Hardware Diagnostics - Verify & Repair disk ••• Nothing makes it connect to Internet. Network diagnostics gets to end but will not get connected. Hardware diagnostics regular and extended report no issues. We think the logic board is shot given everything we tried and symptoms with system. Can anyone suggest something we did not try of the things we did listed above? Please help us save this thing from the recycling center. Thanks in advance. Sorry for the long post, wanted to be thorough with what's going on and what we have already tried and done thanks to searching these forums for the last week.

    Yikes, sounds like big problems!
Have you blown the dust out lately?

  • "Ethernet Cable Not Connected" Huh?

I have a dual 10.3 450 G4 that I rarely connect to the internet. I kept getting the wrong date and time so I changed the battery. Now the monitor display keeps resetting to the wrong size and I keep getting the message the "Ethernet Cable not connected even though if I connect the cable to my laptop it works fine. I even tried restarting in OS 9, I repaired permissions still nothing. The system profiler tells me that the the extension is not loading. I can't find where to dump the preferences.
    Any help?
    Thanks

  • Dual Ethernet will not connect if set to share Single IP address

The subject says it all. My trusty old Dual Ethernet will not connect if set to share Single IP address.
I cannot get anything but a self assigned IP address with it set to share a single IP address.
Before about Tuesday of last week I had connected to it a Mac mini, iMac, Dell Desktop, Dell Laptop, and PS3 all working fine. I think Comcast or Apple updated their system or Airport software and now the old dual Ethernet will not share a single IP address.

So far as I know, there has been no recent change in Apple's software affecting the Snow (a/k/a Dual Ethernet) base station. About 2-1/2 weeks ago, Apple distributed an update to AirPort software for Intel Macs running Tiger, but it would not have affected the base station.
Your topic implies that when the Snow is not set to share a single IP address (i.e., presumably, when "Distribute IP addresses" is unchecked in the Network pane of AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow), one of the computers is connecting to the Internet through the base station. I also imagine that the self assigned IP address you mention is the IP address of that computer, rather than of the base station, and that that computer obtains an IP address from Comcast when the Snow is not distributing IP addresses.
Assuming that that computer is connecting wirelessly, then whatever settings that computer is using for TCP/IP and PPPoE in the AirPort part of System Preferences, while the computer connects to the Internet, should be the ones used for the base station, in the Internet pane of AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow. (Most likely, it is simply "Using DHCP.") The IP address obtained from Comcast should be received by the base station, when it is set to distribute IP addresses in the Network pane, and the IP address should show up in the Internet pane. (When the Snow is distributing IP addresses, it has two IP addresses itself, a WAN IP address obtained from Comcast and a LAN IP address, 10.0.1.1, visible only to devices in your network.)
Even when the settings are correct, the Snow might not be able to obtain an IP address if your cable modem remembers the computer, which had been receiving the IP address previously. You'll probably need to shut down the computers and unplug power to the base station and cable modem. After waiting 5 minutes, restore power to the modem, then after another 5 minutes, restore power to the base station, then after another 5 minutes, start up a computer.

  • Ethernet port not connected

    Hello,
Since a couple of hours, my Ethernet interface (through a Thunderbolt or USB connector) remains "not connected".
I couldn't find a clear answer to this problem ... Any idea ?

Try resetting the SMC and PRAM.

  • Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter not connecting on MacBook Pro Retina

I recently purchased the Thunderbolt to Ethernet Adapter to connect to my 13in MacBook Pro Retina Late 2012 (Mountain Lion 10.8.2) to a hardwired internet connection for faster downloads. However, when I connect the ethernet cord to the adapter nothing happens and only the wifi connection is identified.
Ethernet or Thunderbolt Ethernet are not an option in the System Preference > Network. Also, either connection are options when trying to add a network interface ( System Preferences > Network > + > Interface).
I have tried several fixes like Resetting PRAM or Removing Network Preferences File. The NetworkInferences.plist and Preferences.plist files did get recreated after reboot, but only the WIFI interface shows up.

I am sure the Thunderbolt ports are functional since I am able to connect my display using Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter
Could I have corrupted the Network Preference File or is could the Thunderbolt to Ethernet Adapter damaged?
    Please help.

I had this problem, too, and an Apple Support call and Genius Bar visit later, I had the answer: if you're using Network Locations that preexist your Thunderbolt display, it doesn't seem to auto-add the possibility of "Display Ethernet" to your available network ports. To solve this, either:
Create a new Location in your Network system preferences. It will finally detect the "Display Ethernet" and use it. It'll slowly change from disconnected to No IP to green-is-for-go.
    or
Fix an existing Location by clicking the + to add a port and choosing Display Ethernet. It'll slowly change from disconnected to No IP to green-is-for-go.

  • Ethernet: "Cable Not Connected" and Parallels?

    Hi, everybody!
So, we've got a Late '06 iMac and we run Parallels to use Windows XP, since my wife's work stuff is not Mac-friendly. Our Ethernet port has not been waking from sleep properly for quite some time. The Network Pane just shows "Cable Not Connected." At first I thought it was my old router, but it's still happening with a three-month-old Time Capsule.
I took it to my local Genius Bar, and was told that this is a "known issue" with Parallels Desktop and Leopard. I uninstalled Parallels for the weekend and deleted its network devices from the pref. pane. The ethernet port worked for a couple of days, but then it was gone again last night.
Has anyone else run into this? Or heard about this "known issue?" I've not been able to find any information about it.
    Thanks!
    Jon

I'm seeing the same issue with Nov 2007 iMac. Parallels has never been installed on the machine. Has any progress been made in identifying a solution?

  • Ethernet will not connect after installing latest Security Update.

I installed the latest security update, restarted my computer, and found that it now will not connect to the internet. I get the message "Could not find a PPPoE server". I have checked all of my settings, restarted the computer again, turned the modem off and on again, etc., but nothing helps. I know that there is nothing wrong with the modem and server because I am connected through the same DSL modem to this computer (a mac mini). It would seem that the security update has done something unhelpful! Any ideas?
BTW, the ibook does not have a wireless card and I had not installed 2 earlier wireless updates. I only installed this one because it said "recommended for all users".
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hello
It seems that the update set your preferences to "use PPPOe" while you where using "TCP/IP".
Go to "System Preferences" and enter the pane whose icon is named "Réseau" in french (maybe "Network" in english.
    Reset your settings to "TCP/IP".

  • Ethernet Cable "Not Connected" for W510

I recently reloaded my OS, and now my wired network card does not work.  The driver manager say the card is working fine.  But whenever I connect the network cable, there are no LED's light up on the card, and ipconfig says the cable is not connected.
I know it is not the cable or router, since I pulled the cable from a working T520.
Thoughts?  Did I do something wrong on the OS install, or is it hardware?
    Thanks
    Al

Ok. It was worth a shot.
How about trying a Linux Live CD boot? Even though Windows is reporting the card as ok, if it doesn't work in Linux, then the report is suspect and you may, in fact, have a hardware issue.

  • Ethernet printers not connecting the same

Currently I have an Airport Extreme in one area and a TB Time Capsule in another location.
Until today I had two mini networks set-up so (mostly Window's users) could log on to either network for stronger signal.
The Airport Extreme base offered all my ethernet printers (I'm a printer with many - well 10).
The Time Capsule offers less than half the options for printer connectivity. Both are set-up the same.
I had a brain storm to make one roaming network using the Airport Extreme as the base thinking that I'd also have the option of all my printers.
I mistakenly selected my T.C. vs. Airport as a base so now have to wait until the crew takes lunch to re-set the network.
Does anyone know why I get different options from two Airport Bases?
Both are about three months old, up to date with 7.3.2 firmware etc.

i have no idea why you would put sit0 in your configuration. arch will identify your connection by eth0. i think you probably did not read the install manual properly.
to fix your rc.conf just make sure your ethernet module is loaded and then change the sit to eth.
if all is set properly you then can restart your network daemon.
I actually have the same problem, and the install manual is not clear at all on it.  I have no idea where that sit0 config came from either, nor what sit0 refers to.
    dj,
To find out what module you need, you'll have to google it.  All Linksys and Netgear cards (the most popular) use the "tulip" driver.

  • Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter not connecting

I have spent the last two weeks scanning every single forum and every response in regards to this very question above and none have worked.
    Issue:
I am running a MBA mid 2012 on OS X 10.8.3. It is a new device. I have tried to update all thunderbolt drivers and get the regular "not supported or not compatible" because all firmware/software is up to date . I changed location settings in network adapter but nothing happens. I have done an SMC and PRAM reset but again nothing. I can see the port recognises my thunderbolt adapter (Apple standard) and shows it to be connected. I am using the same ethernet cable / settings on my standard desktop PC so i know the routing and cables are fine.
I see so many issues with the thunderbolt connection online so clearly something is a miss. I have VMWare fusion 5 installed if that helps also.
I would go to a genius bar with this but im stuck on an island in the middle of the atlantic ocean so impossible!
    Thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Ethernet cable not connected?!

    Hello
I have been using a wireless router for some time. Last night I decided to plug in the ethernet cable and my mac shows that the "ethernet cable is unplugged". I have tried multiple cables with my mac connected directly to the cable modem and through the router. I have restarted the modem and computer multiple times yet the mac still says the cable is unplugged. It has been about a year since I used the built in ethernet connection. I have tried this with airport on and off. Please help!

Good news!I! I got this to work at the 1000 Base/T setting. Page loading is much faster (btw in Safari I "emptied the cache" before starting to use the Ethernet).
Apparently, what needs to change is the Ethernet setting for both Ethernet and Airport.
First, go to the Ethernet>Advanced>Ethernet panel. Set it to "manually" and these settings:
    Then, select OK, then "Apply".
Next, click on Airport in the Network panel. Then Advanced>Ethernet. Set it to "manually". Then, OK and apply. When you select "apply", the Ethernet indicator ought to become active. Looks like this:
After selecting "apply", it appears the Airport Ethernet setting reverts back to "automatically", but now has assigned an Ethernet number:
Here, I shut-off the Airport and I'm now happily flying on Ethernet. BTW, my laptop still connects via Airport.
The behavior here is obviously wrong, as this process ought to be much simpler. I'm going to post this thread in the L4/5 Lounge forum and see if I can get Apple's attention that way.

  • Time Capsule not connected to Ethernet?

    Hello,
I walked in to my office two days ago and the amber light was blinking with an occasional green (on my Time Capsule).
The reported error was that the ethernet was not connected. It was. I ultimately disconnected the ethernet cable from my Time Capsule and connected directly to my iMac. After some configuring issues I was on line. Did what I needed to do and shut down.
Next day  I decided to try powering down the Time Capsule and re-connected the Ethernet cable. Everything worked fine just like it has for well over a year now.
I figured maybe the cleaning crew bumped the power and everything was fine.
    No dice.
Came in this morning and the Time Capsule is blinking amber again (with an occasional green) same issue. "no ethernet connected."
Now I am connected directly to the IMac and asking for help.
    Please.
Thanks in advance for your help.

On our TC, the TC shows a green light even when it refuses our computer/device wireless connections and says the password is invalid.  However, I left the house for three hours and am now on my laptop and it is apparently working normally.  I plan to watch it very closely for the next week and see what happens.
I have read on here (and other Mac-centric review sites) that TC's are very unreliable, have slower than average wireless connections (and short ranges in apartments, especially through walls/several rooms), and fail within 18 months -- all of which is considered "normal" lifespan by Apple (as confirmed by the Apple employees at the San Diego Store in Fashion Valley).
I don't plan on purchasing another TC, and likely not even an Airport extreme.  I will look at buying a more reliable wireless router with stronger (farther) connections and connection ranges. I love apple products and have used them to the exclusion of others for over 15 years, but this is really annoying (and my friends have much better wireless networks!).

  • "Ethernet Not Connected"

    Hello
My internet stopped tonight after being connected via ethernet. Managed to get it back on and then it stopped again. Now my macbook will not regognise an ethernet connection despite the fact the wires are fine and the cable modem works fine with other computers.
Though they are password protected so I cannot be sure, airport networks are showing on the list.
System preferences says that no cable is connected, does anyone know of a solution?

actually, I'm pretty sure that there is an issue with the recent iTunes update. As soon as I updated iTunes my Ethernet port is missing. Usually it would show in the status of the Ethernet preferences that Ethernet is not connect, but it does not show it at all. Apple has to come out with a fix for that one.
