My Ethernet won't connect online anymore

Just a little while this was working. I am using a school network so I have no control over the router, it's public.
I had to change my MAC address in order to connect and for a couple of months it's been working, even today. I don't know what changed in the settings, though.
Now it won't connect via ethernet and states "Self-assigned IP". When I change the MAC address I do it through Terminal, it has never messed with the Ethernet IP settings, even today. But when I changed the MAC address again the Ethernet changed to "Self-assigned IP" instead of "Connected".
So how can I stop my Ethernet settings from changing by themselves?
Like I said, I always used to change the MAC address and it NEVER interfered with the IP address until now, so how can I fix that?

I'm changing it because I can't connect to the internet through the original mac address.
I'm changing it through terminal using a sudo code which makes the change temporary. It goes back to normal once it's rebooted.
What I'm telling you and what emphasized is that it's been working. I admit I didn't monitor the Ethernet setting before when it was working so I can't tell you what state it was at "Connected" or "Self-assigned IP". So I thought that changing the mac address wouldn't interfere with it. So now when I change the address it won't connect, unlike just an hour ago when it connected fine. So now it won't connect wither before or after I change my mac address.
You see when it is connected to the net, regardless of what the mac address is, it should open up to the school's registration page. That's why a mac address change shouldn't prevent me from seeing that page but now it is.

I'm staying at a hotel in Chenai, India and my Ethernet won't connect. All advice is to contact my ISP, but I can't remember my ISP. Do I simply have to type in a new IP address? If so, where do Ifind it? I need an Ethernet connection! SOS!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
You need to talk to the hotel and ask for their ISP address.
You are trying to connect via their internet service, so you need their information.

  • Computer detects router but won't connect online - help

I came home from work and all of the sudden my computer wouldn't connect at all to anything. We have another computer on the network which I'm using to send this message and it works fine, but mine won't connect. It detects the router and everything is connected- all the numbers come up in the Network preferences like it always does...IP, ethernet, etc., but nothing will connect to the internet or AIM. Anybody know what the problem might be? Can my ethernet card be busted, or disconnected or anything that would cause the computer to locate the router but not actually connect? Any help is appreciated- thanks.

I have a similar problem. Sometimes I get a brief connection, but even then it is extremely slow and I get time out errors.

  • Backup - time capsule - ethernet - won't connect

I left my time capsule unconnected for a period of time, over a week anyway. I commenced a backup - unsurprisingly, using wireless it was taking a very long time.
I wanted to speed it up. I connected ethernet cable to ethernet ports in Macbook and Time Capsule. However, it won't connect. It says 'back up disk not available'.
I have looked around discussion topics and can't see a solution.
Anyone experience something similar or able to advise? Many thanks

I managed to work it out. You have to disable the wireless operation of the Time Capsule before you can get an ethernet connection to work. Wrongly assumed they might just operate as alternatives.
    SO all sorted now ...

  • Ethernet Won't Connect after 10.5.6 Upgrade

After doing the upgrade to 10.5.6 on my MacBook Pro, the ethernet port no longer seems to work. The Network preferences panel claims that the cable for Ethernet is not plugged in when it certainly is and works just fine with other computers (Mac and PC). I know Airport works since that's how I'm connecting to write this.
Anyone else seen this problem? Anyone have a solution?

Have you tried rebooting your router?
There are two major parts to connecting to the Internet using Wi-Fi and DHCP:
    1) Associating with the network
This is where you connect to your local network, typically by selecting your router's SSID and entering its password. This is the Wi-Fi equivalent of connecting your machine to a router using an Ethernet cable.
    2) Obtaining an IP address (and other network parameters) via DHCP
This is where your machine asks your local DHCP server for an IP address and if one is available, your DHCP server should provide it (and other network parameters, such as the local netmask, the gateway address for your network, the addresses of your network's DNS servers, etc.)
When this step fails, computers fall back to what is called a self-assigned IP address. This address, 169.x.x.x, is an IP address systems use when an attempt to obtain an IP address via DHCP fails.
This is done so that two machines connected to each other without a DHCP server in place will still be able to communicate in an ad-hoc fashion, but they will not be able to connect to other networks (such as the Internet.)
The question of why DHCP fails is a rather complex one with a variety of possible causes - router issues, DHCP server issues, and so forth. For example, some cable modems are configured to only issue a single IP address - any device other than the first to ask will not be able to obtain one. Still more common is they can only assign a limited number of addresses - say five - a number quite easy to reach if say you have a DVR, a couple iPhones, a computer and a Wii or XBox in the house.
So the first things to do to try and resolve the issue are the easy ones, and rebooting your router is tops on that list.

  • Bootcamp Ethernet Won't Connect

Hi when I boot in windows I can't get the ethernet internet to work. I can connect with wi-fi, but the ethernet connection wont work. Can someone please help me out? Thanks in advance.

review your setup to make sure you don't have 2 routers doing NAT
also make sure the ethernet driver is installed under device manager
if you only have one router in your setup, try the following
    go to control panel
    administrative tools
    services
    stop the network connections service
    go to control panel
    network connections
right click the LAN interface and disable it
    start the network connections service
    re-enable the LAN interface
if this fixes it, let me know and I can provide the text for a batch file to do this automatically at logon.

  • Exchange and Kuler Won't Connect Online

Every time I try to use Adobe Exchange or Kuler in any of the CS 6 Design Standard Applications, the panel displays a message saying it can't connect to the service. But if I check for updates in the Exchange Panel it says no updates are available so this would indicate it can connect. All other connections from Adobe applications seem to be working. I have all the latest updates and am running CS 6 on Mac OS X Mountain Lion. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi there,
Do you see any products or any content showing in either panel? Maybe you cpuld post a screenshot so it's easier to see what's going on.
    Thanks,

  • My magic mouse won't connect automatically anymore...

I'm not sure where this fits, so I decided to post it here.
Anyways, I've had my iMac since early January and it came with the Magic Mouse. It's been working fine up until 20 minutes ago when it disconnected itself. So, I turned it off and turned it back on and it wouldn't connect! Now, if I want it to connect, I have to plug in a different mouse so that I can manually click "Connect".
This has never happened before and I don't know why it's started now. I've tried un-pairing and re-pairing the mouse but that didn't solve the issue either. Anyone know the solution?

I have the same problem here. It started a few days ago and so far no luck fixing it. I am going to try a different Magic Mouse and see if that works. I will report back when I get a chance to try it.

    Hello Rattisate,
Sorry to hear you are not able to connect to Wi-Fi on your MacBook Pro.  I would be concerned about this too.  You can find information on how to troubleshoot this in the following article:
Troubleshooting Wi-Fi issues in OS X Lion and Mac OS X v10.6
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4628
Follow the steps in the section labeled, "Symptom: My Mac does not connect to the Internet."
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.

  • Can no longer connect online (via Ethernet)

    Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone can help me. I've had my macbook since October 2007-- never had any issues or problems getting online (just connect the macbook to a cable modem using a regular ol' ethernet wire). I was online earlier today as usual, no issues, but I put the macbook to sleep, came back about an hour later and all of a sudden I couldn't get back online.
Did all the usual stuff: reboot macbook, reboot modem, restarted a gazillion times, checked wires, made sure it wasn't my ISP. I've done it all. Everything else is fine and working normally. I checked the wire with my desktop PC (which is what I"m using now to type this and connect online --so I know it works, and so does my modem, obviously) yet and still I cannot get my macbook to get connect.
I'm noticing that under Network Status, no matter how many times I check 'Built in Ethernet' it never appears in the box. Nor can I see my IP address when I'm in the Built in Ethernet tab.
Under Network Diagnostics everything has a red dot next to it: Built-in ethernet (failed), Network setting (failed), ISP (failed), Internet (failed), Server (failed)
Weird all the way around. It was working fine thins morning! I didn't do anything different today. It's like my automatic ethernet settings never existed. Before, I was just able to plug in my wire and it was all good.
Can anyone help? (Please bear with me I'm a total noob, so I apologize if I left out any important info...) thx in advance

Just wanted to close out the topic--so I went to a local Mac "clinic" and they determined what I feared to the be the issue: something is wrong w/my ethernet port/logic board.
    *Sighhhhh
The guy was honest with me and said it'd cost way too much to repair it and that I'd just be better off buying a wirless router and sticking to wireless...Which is what I'm going to have to do.
Oddly enough one of my friends said she experienced the same thing on her MB but admitted she'd dropped hers. I've never dropped my MB nor has anything out of the ordinary happened to it (to my knowledge).
Thanks again Glen for trying to help.

  • My wife's titanium powerbook g4 won't connect via ethernet

My wife's g4 titanium powerbook (running 10.5.4) won't connect to the internet in my work apartment via the ethernet cable (only choice). The ip address keeps coming up 169.254.240.149 That usually means that the ethernet card is bad. maybe the driver is just bad. does anyone know how to reinstall the driver for this computer?

It is a Canon iP4600 printer and I'm running OS 10.6.8. I've powered everything down and still no go. I've connected the printer directly to my MacBook's USB port and it works fine. Any suggestions?

I have an iP4500, which I assume is quite similar to your model.
I had to reset the printing system to get things printing again. Only takes a few minutes and no problems at all since I did it a week ago or so.
Plug the printer into the USB port on the Express and restart the printer.
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock) and then open Print and Fax
Right-Click in the printer area on the left and select Reset Printing System
Then click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list to install the printer again.

This is more about your modem then anything. Sometimes you'll need to unplug and plug back in your modem. Consider it a glitch from the ISP or just the modem in general.
when I need to turn something off then on I try the modem first. This when I'm not doing any ware and tare to the device.
