My experience, perhaps of help to someone...

Got a copy today here in Japan (on business from Canada and with the strength of our dollar - nice little discount!), and installed it as an upgrade. I have a MB Pro 1st gen with 2GB RAM and about 25GB of HD space left on the original 100GB drive.
*Shining things:*
-Install went very smoothly with no hiccups and my MB Pro started right up after installation was complete.
-Spotlight's indexing took only about 45 minutes (for the 70GB of files, apps etc.
-Noticeably speedier response in a general way (apps are snappy to launch and the Finder feels like it should now!
-Spotlight no longer beach balls when you correct something you've mistyped in the middle of a search and stays responsive
-Cover flow very useful for someone like me with a zillion images and graphic files
-QuickLook and the ability to wail thru PDFs, Keynote files and being able to 'see' Word and Excel files is great
-Improvements in the 'system' apps are appreciated (Mail's enhancement among many others...)
*Not so Shining things:*
-Stacks seems to dislike my band's folder for some reason (it 'forces' Finder to re-launch for some strange reason and it appears to be tied to generating thumbnails of some of my .ai files)
-Perhaps connected in some way is the fact that Illustrator (CS3) now becomes unresponsive if I save the file I'm working on with the "create PDF compatible file" dialogue box selected. My file would hang for about 5 minutes before finally finishing the save I'd started. I simply unchecked the box and magically the file saved like a champion.
-My Disk Utility disk permissions routine I've not been able to get happening and I get a strange message: Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
That issue surely isn't a deal-breaker and I was probably repairing permissions too often anyway 10.5.1...
Anyway, all in all, a relatively painless experience that brought my MB Pro up to snuff virtually without pain and I am certainly enjoying the new features and general snappiness of my machine. I thought it wise to let people know out there that there's probably an overwhelming amount of us who have had a good experience with the Upgrade (and saving myself a lot of painful effort avoiding the wipe/install).

Hello Apple.
It seems you have gone to great lengths to improve accessibility in many areas of the iPad. Why was this obvious problem with icon text size missed? (It's not with the Mac.). And for so long too.
Do you employ people with actual accessibility problems to help you do UI design?
I think too, that some buttons are too close for people who might have motor control problems.
I love my iPad but I fear as I age, the iPad might not keep up with me.

i have a huge problem
i downloaded a podcast on my iPod shuffle about 2 days ago and it went onto my ipod but now it wont turn on and the green and orange error lights appear and it wont let me play any of my songs.
Ive tried everything that apple says to do (5 r's) but they dont work at all. Now my computer wont recognise that the iPod is in the computer. I deleted iTunes off my computer because i thought there might be a problem with that but now i cant load it back onto my computer. Ive tried to download the newest version of updater and iTunes but niether will work. Ipod updater also doesnt recognise my ipod is in my computer.

I've been getting the blinking green and orange lights of doom as well, except I've had my shuffle for almost a year, there doesn't appear to be anything you can do about this. I doubt it has anything to do with the podcast, there's so many that break at the one year mark that I'm pretty sure that apple makes em that way.

Bit more info please. Connect to iTunes on your Pc/Mac click on your icon and confirm your memory usage in the Capacity bar at the bottom of the Summary page. Try also unticking some Apps you use less frequently in the Apps section in you iPad's pages in iTunes on your pc/mac, sync afterwards to clear them off your pad then try downloading again.

This is a copy of ONEof the keys in the registry I changed as told by Apple support today. I also have changed others as instructed by GEAR software support to manually delete GEAR drivers (that I had installed but couldn't delete some of the others they mentioned from Windows system 32. Then some bright spark at work told me I need the Gear drivers so I downloaded the software and installed again.
Sorry, just this minute went to insert image and it is giving me a message saying this sort of content is not allowed?.

MONITOR MADNESS - Is it Leopard ? My graphics card perhaps ? HELP

I am going nuts ( no don't answer that one ! ).
Recently ( possibly after the 10.5.2 graphics update - I can't exactly recall ) my LG flat screen monitor has started to look like a grainy 60's acid art house experiment !!
It is subtle but most disconcerting as I use my beloved G5 every day with Logic P8.
I have tried changing settings - calibration the lot... but still it looks strangely weird - like a TV that is not quite tuned in.
Gradients and shaded areas have weird lines instead of fine tones and artifacts appear around type and lines where was once beautiful and clear graphics.
When I first bought the LG 204WT 20" monitor 5 months ago it was fine !.
I have been using the recommended DVI output and tried different cables and the alternative input - the effect is still there but not quite as bad when using connector to RGB input.
The shaded areas in finder and Logic are almost transparent and grainy with a light blue / pink halo like effect around windows and graphic boxes - *I don't know how to explain it really but I do hope someone out there may have some answers or at least have an inkling of what I'm trying to describe..*
As if I couldn't make matters worse I did an archive and install to roll back to 10.5.1 early hours of this morning - this didn;'t cure the problem and I lost the use of some music plug -ins and authorizations in the bargain.. Maybe it is time to call it a day and take a long break.
Really I should get a pen and paper and sit with my guitar an a darkened room for a few days.
I called the Mac shop where it was purchased then LG but with no help, advice or offers to replace it.
I guess the monitor basically works but this strange behaviour is arguably quite subtle and may not be considered 'serious' by most people !
*In the meantime if any of you lovely people could take my situation seriously and offer any practical advise I would be most appreciative.*

Perhaps my problem is related?
Today, I installed Leopard 10.5.2 on a LaCie Quadra FW disk with my G5 2x2.3, 4.5 GB RAM, GeForce 6600 graphics card with one Samsung 18" and one LaCie 20" monitor. This combination (less the FW disk) has worked (and works) perfectly with Tiger.
Also, directly after installing, both monitors showed what's expected.
However, after restarting (also restaring after updating from 10.5.0 to 10.5.2) the image on both monitors is scrambled in vertical bands!
After learning how to get hold of the Monitors settings panel, just by a fluke I decided to checkmark 'Screen Doubling' (equivalent; sorry, running a Swedish System), which made the scrambled stripes go away. Then, when unchecking Screen Doubling again, everything was back to normal.
After restarting again, the problem was back, and had to be dealt with as above...
I'd really appreciate some feedback from anyone with a similar experience.
Switching back to trusty old Tiger, everything is normal as ususal, so there's apparently no hardware problem involved.

I bought a new ipod 5th generation (30gig)2 and a half months from now.
Problems:
1.) I accidentally/i intended to reset my ipod while still connected to pc (windows xp->how stupid of me.
2.) After resetting all videos,songs etc... are gone but pic are still in my ipod-> where did they go?deleted perhaps?
3.) I deleted the itunes, restart my pc and reinstallitunes and again and restart my pc bec itunes no longer recognize my ipod->(itunes says:i need to have an ipod software updater to restore factory settings)
4.) I go to the apple website to download latest ipod updater then i saved it to: Save to disk
5.) Then in my pc desktop an icon for adobe:ipodsetup.exe->click it but it says:There was an error opening this document.The file is already open or in use by another application.-> cant understand what it implies...
6.) So because of that i deleted all the remaining files in my ipod which was MY PICS. so it leaves my ipod no songs etc as in empty as ever.
7.) I reset it twice and turned it ON->of course not connected to pc or anything-so i checked out the SETTINGS of my ipod, then to ABOUT, then discovered that -IPOD SONGS:0,VIDEOS:0,PHOTOS:0,CAPACITY:27.8(i have no questions about this i know why 2.2 was already consumed because of the menus/internal settins whatever), but AVAILABLE:23.5!!!!!!!!->WHY?I THOUGHT IT WILL GO BACK TO 27.8, does this mean my ipod has some defects or something?i took care of my ipod has a protective crystal casing, never fall of from my hands/while being use in short its my partner in life as of now.

WOW, you have a big problem. My first suggestion is to restore your ipod, like btabz said. Other things you could do are 1). Send it in to a electronics store or apple.
2). Get a new ipod (LAST RESORT)

Having problems w/wifi itunes and ringtons..please please help me someone?!

the problem i am having is when i went and purchased a song off of wifi itunes..it went through fine BUT..wheni went to my computer to look up the song i just bought and it can be made into a ringtone..but when i sync the song and then tried to make it into a ringtone..it says "ethis song can not be mad into a ringtone"can no longer be made into a ringtone..but in the store on my computer it clearly has the bell next to it..so is the problem possibly that if you buy a song wifi..that you can not make it into a ringtone when you sync it to your computer..because its bought by wifi itunes..i dont know but can someone please help me on this.would really appreciate it.

I have the exact same problem. I returned my nano to apple about 2 weeks ago and they weren't able to duplicate it. I got the same nano back in the mail today, loaded up the songs that refused to play, and nothing was fixed.
This is my 6th apple product and 4th that I currently use and sync with my library. The songs I play on my other apple products (4g classic, iphone 3g, 2g nano) work perfectly. When I put them on my 4g they don't. If I convert the file, and then turn it back to .mp3 format it works...but with a library of nearly 700 gigs of music it seems like a hassle I or other apple customers shouldn't have to deal with.
I just got off the phone with a customer service rep, and he said the problem isn't with the nano, it's with the file. We got into a pretty good argument back and forth, but at the end of the day when file x works on every other product but this specific one, I'd say the problem lies with this one.
I keep crossing my fingers for a firmware update that will fix this, but as it stands I'm stuck deciding on whether or not I just want to give up on the 4g or convert my library to another format and then re-convert it back.

We're a small film production company based in Shanghai and we're about to start production on the biggest project we've ever done and in preparation for the project we want to streamline our workflow into a much more manageable system, but none of us have any real experience with decent server set ups.
I have in my time worked with just a dedicated machine as a small server for shared documents etc, but as we work with HDV footage we're going to need something substantially better in order to handle a lot of processor intense stuff.
My question is, what do we need to get to set this up? Right now the office has a couple of imacs, a couple of power mac G5s and a bunch of macbook/macbook pros. We need something whereby HD footage can be edited by multiple machines but all kept in a central location that is also able to be accessed remotely (although we don't need HDV to be supported for this). I've been looking into Final Cut and OSX server to run the workflow end of things, but I'm not sure what we need in terms of hardware.
Anyone got any suggestions for where I start? Obviously I don't know if I've given enough info for you to reply, but if you get back to me with questions I can try and give you some more info.

Storage is available as Direct Attached Storage (DAS), as Network Attached Storage (NAS), and Storage Area Network (SAN) storage.
DAS is direct, fast, and local and typically single-host; the disks are attached to host-based controllers.
NAS is the slower and distributed and multi-host option; the disks are attached to a Gigabit LAN.
SAN is the faster and distributed and multi-host option; the disks are attached to a Fibre Channel network.
NAS trades off lower costs for higher bit-error rates; the controllers and particularly the host have to deal with the communications errors that arise. This adds some overhead, and reduces the speeds.
SAN has higher costs and lower bit-error rates; the controllers and the host can go faster, as there are fewer communications errors expected. This is lower overhead, and helps maintain speed.
As for the physical connectivity, NAS uses Gigabit Ethernet. SAN uses Fibre Channel.
DAS can use SAS, SATA, SCSI, FireWire, or otherwise. (The embedded disks within an Xserve are SAS/SATA connections.) There are trade-offs here, too. And there are some vendors that sell DAS gear that can (if you add more bits from the vendor) be re-configured and re-used on a SAN, should you move from DAS to SAN.
Mac OS X Server is a basic piece of the puzzle; with any moderate- to large-scale Mac OS X configuration, you'll have some number of Mac OS X Server boxes. Mac OS X Server with Xsan allows the server to access SAN-based storage, particularly with multiple servers accessing the same pool of storage. Xsan is a way to coordinate and extend Mac OS X Server to operate in parallel with other Mac OS X Server boxes.
Add-on software is either not needed for DAS, or it's a driver or kext for the particular host-based storage controller.
Add-on software may be needed for NAS, or the NAS controller presents an AFS server.
For highest speed, the usual choice is DAS or SAN, and the decider there is the likelihood you'll need to access the storage from multiple servers at speed. DAS is typically single-host, where SAN is multi-host.
I'd suggest some more formal pre-sales or technical help here. You're headed for a whole lot of decisions, and the NAS and DAS and SAN differences are just one of many, many, many decisions and trade-offs that are involved with acquiring and configuring and running a server. Any sort of a server.

i have windows vista - 64 bit - the HP IQ500 touchsmart with a wireless keyboard.
in the systray the num caps and scroll lock appears as little blue boxes (when on).
everynow and again they simply disapper.
i researced how to activate them again but cant remember how to do it.
there is a way without having to mess with the registry and without downloading any program
i just cant remember how. i know wherever it is...you ultimately get 3 boxes that you can check in order to turn the options back on.
i am not talking about toggling, or sound, or mscofig and then boot.
does anyone know the steps to turn the caps scroll and num lock indicator in teh sys tray back on
oh, and right clicking on the toolbar and going to the notificiation area is not what i am referring to either.
I checked in the control panel programs and the hp on screen caps lock indicator etc program is there.
I reinstalled it nonetheless and confirmed it is installed properly
When I right click on the notification area I do to properties/notification area/customize
There are two lists there
1. Current Items and
2. Past Items
For some reason I see caps lock - scroll lock and num lock under the past items
There you are also able to change the status of the items to either Hide wne active, hide or show
All three (caps/num/scroll) are SHOW
I click apply OK then apply
I restart the computer and nothing. The on screen caps lock indicator is still not in the notification area/systray area
I repeat teh steps to ensure that the three have the SHOW option chosen and they are.
So....
Program is installed
Items are check for SHOW
Restart was done
Ohhh and also...I went to MSCONFIG and made sure that the HP Keyboard Program was selected/check mark as one of the start up programs.
There in a run command to activiate the 3rd party program (hp onscreen indicator program)
When you enter the run command that I cant remember...you then get this option where there are three check boxes...one next to num lock - one next to caps lock and one for scroll lock.
Once you check/select the boxes/options you want...presto they appear in the sys tray/notification area.
I just cant remember the run command it to save my life.
Please....put my mind to ease...cause I am losing it!

Is an iPad of help to someone with low vision?

I have an elderly low vision (legally blind) relative in the UK. (I'm in Canada.) I'm wondering if an iPad would work for her and make it easier to do email and listen to her audio books? Or any other things that can assist her. Any info would be helpful. With not being there I don't want to promise it will be better, but I'm hoping others can point me to all the things an iPad can help her with better than an ancient computer that she doesn't understand and it doesn't work well. I live on my iPad and know how wonderful it is, but in not sure what is available for persons both elderly and that have low vision. Thank you for any help.

Apologies that it took until now to get back to you.
Before I start responding to the ques. you answered, I need to point out that if you want to give it as a gift, and want to actually send them one, that won't be possible unless you do it through the online UK store. Warranties are not international so if they have an issue within the first year Apple will not cover it for free because it was purchased in Canada. And, if you pay by credit card you must have a credit card in the UK and a home address attached to that credit card. It's the same with itunes gift cards. So you might need another way to get them one. Maybe you can speak to Support in Canada and see if they can help.
1. That she has internet is great so all she needs is a wireless router. Many are very inexpensive these days. Here in the USA at Best Buy, there is a Belkin for $29.99 and a Netgear for $44.99. We have the netgear which two years earlier we had paid $89.99 for. They will want one with either, bgn, or at least n. N is the newest connection. That should be bought in the UK also. They won't have a lot in their home that needs it (many computers plus xbox plus printers, etc., so simple and inexpensive will be enough.
2. Are their son and DIL somewhat knowledgeable in computers and ipads? They should be able to set them up easily. Once they have wireless set up, the ipad will connect wireless router seamlessly.
3. If they have an email address, that can be their ID. They will have to set up a passcode, password, and select security questions to answer. PLEASE MAKE SURE THEY WRITE IT DOWN AND HER SON KEEPS HIS OWN COPY, TOO.
4. Great that they are still independent. I only asked that to see if they had to deal with a particular living community's cable company, etc. They don't. Good.
5. With the newer ipad models they don't need to sync it to a computer. But if they have family close, they might bring their current laptop to your cousin periodically to sync the ipad and back-up data.
Again, Siri is definitely on the newer models (not ipad 2 or original). Once it's set up for assessibilty she will use Voice Dictation. And she can speak commands to it. Also, when her apps are set up and assessiblity is on (they'll need to learn the taps, etc.) when looking for ibooks, for example, she/they can hover over the screen with fingers and the ipad will tell her what the app is. When it's the app she wants, she puts her finger on it. It will open the app.

If she is mobile and lives near an Apple store, maybe her son and/or DIL can take her there to a free class for 'Getting Started with iPad.' Or they can make appts. at the genius bar for help.
Though her vision is not good, she can facetime friends and relatives, including you.
If her ipad is synced to her son's computer, he can upload any music she loves from their cd's (free!) she has to his computer, make a playlist and sync that to her ipad. Or you could even do it on a UK compatible CD and send it to him to sync.
Another great thing is if someone contacts their old friends and their family and asks them to send scanned pictures to you from when they - your cousin and her husband? were young to now, they can be combined and put to music they like/love appropriate to the years of the pictures, and synced to their ipad. They could take the pictures to a local camera store, have them put on cd's (NOT read only) send them off to you or her son, make into a slide show on his computer, then sync to the ipad. I bet they'd love that, and it's good for happy memories and their memory.
That's another thing. There are so many games to improve memory.
That they can have books read to them, listen to music, face chat with family, (imagine them talking to grand children) looking at their pictures, listening to their music, etc., I think it's great and I think Apple needs to continue addressing the needs of and marketing the ipad to Seniors. It helps them feel less isolated in so many ways.

But i subscribe on a monthly paiement, so, normally, my adobe id is the key, but it doesn't work. i tried all the advices on the help menu, and it doesn't work neither.
