My external drive is shared automatically on second accout...

Hi,
I dont want my external drive (formated partially to FAT32 and journaled) to be seen on second account - my wifes - (no administrator account for her) but it is at the moment.
any suggestions?
thanks in advance
M

what do you mean by 'formatted partially to FAT32 and journaled"? do you mean you have two partitions on it, one FAT and one MAc Os extended? you can do nothing about the FAT partition. It will always be read+write by anybody. but for a MAc os extended partition you can change permissions on the drive to allow read access only to yourself. select the drive in finder, enter command+i and change the permissions in the permissions panel at the bottom.
but keep in mind that if the drive is plugged in in a different computer an admin user on that computer will be able to override those permissions restrictions. the only way to completely protect your data is to make an encrypted disk image on the external (this can be done with disk utility) and put
your sensitive data inside.

Using an external drive with shared files (iPhoto, iTunes), attached to a Time Capsule, can the contents of the external drive be backed-up to the internal Time Capsule drive? Perhaps a RAID1 mirror to a partitioned Time Capsule? I understand that the Time Machine (software) cannot backup a networked drive (the external) and that Time Capsule (the router/wireless hard drive) does not have its own backup software... so it won't backup the connected drive. What I would like is an alternate solution for having an automated backup of a networked drive. A 2TB Time Capsule has more than enough space for Time Machine backups of my family of Macbooks, so I had hoped to mirror a 500GB external drive (with shared media files) to a portion of the Time Capsule internal hard drive. I assume this would require a partition of the Time Capsule drive. If not, would the sparse file from the various computers being backed up need to be copied to the external drive as part of the RAID1 setup? This seems like overkill for the Time Machine backup, but it would cover the media files.

The complexity with this idea is the software has to run from a Mac computer on your network.. so you need a Mac turned on, probably most of the day.
It isn't possible to partition the TC although you can create a image area.
The software would have to copy the material, that means all files to be copied, go from USB drive, back to the Mac, then back to the TC, and written to the drive. In other words you have just added Network congestion, although a proper incremental backup type software will not actually use a lot of capacity.
Finally it will be slow.. network drives are slower than internal drives. Well USB connected drive is much slower than the same drive connected directly to the computer.. and if the drive is connected directly to a computer it can be shared with the network.

  • Hi, I have a hard disk failure so to recover my data I am using disk utility to restore the data on an external drive while booting from a second external hard drive. When I perform the operation it gives me an input/output error and stops. Any tips?

Hi, I have a hard disk failure so to recover my data I am using disk utility to restore the data on an external drive while booting from a second external hard drive. When I perform the operation and after having selected both my destination and source drives, the operation begins but soon fails due to input/output error. If I try to create an image of the drive it gives me the same error message. Any help would be much appreciated.

Disk Utility only creates a image of the drive, so it's no help getting exactly what you want, which is your files. If the file structure is messed up or the drive is failing then it's no help.
If you have a external boot drive and you can't access the internal non-booting drive though the typical Finder and windows to transfer your files via drag and drop methods, then you need to install Data Rescue on the external boot drive and it will do as best as it can to recover your files. (works on non-encrypted/non-Filevaulted drives only)
.Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Are you sure you have hard drive failure, or that OS X isn't merely not booting?

  • Can't access External Drive over Sharing

Since upgrading to Leopard I am struggling to access the external hard drives connected to my iMac, via sharing from my laptop. For some reason only one of the drives appears which happens to be the drive I use for my Time Machine.
Things were much better with Tiger, you selected the mac you want to access, logged on and selected the volume that was available to you. What the **** have they done to Leopard? Nothing's changed with my externals, just the OS on my two macs.

If you open the Sharing Preferences and select the File Sharing checkbox you will see a list of shared folders. Add your external drive to the list, adjust the users/permissions as you want them and you should be all set.

  • My iPhoto library is on an external drive since the automatic upgrade to PHOTOS I can't open the library

My iPhoto Library is on an external hard drive since the automatic upgrade to PHOTOs i cannot open my library.
It says i do not have permission to write in this library, how do i get it open and retrieve my photos to upload to iCloud/

But forgot to ask then how to transfer/copy my older photos which are on an older external hard drive.
Are these photos in an iPhoto library there or just loose (or in folders) on the older EHD?

  • MOVING mp3-files from external drive into iTunes automatically

    Hi all,
for historical reasons (mainly because I was coming from Windows years ago) I have stored all my mp3-Files (audiobooks, songs, etc) on an external harddrive. My iTunes library is stored on the external drive, too and all media content in my iTunes library is manually linked to the external drive.  Today the option iTunes >Setting >"Let iTunes manage your library" ias well as "Copy filed to iTunes Media folders" is UNchecked.
In my iTunes library there is only a subset of all mp3-files included.
Now, I would love to get my library moved to the mac as well as the audio and video-files, and let iTunes manage the storage of the library!
As far as I know once I move the library (manul or automatic) to the Mac and check the option to let iTunes manage the and copy content, then iTunes will COPY the medial files to the Mac.
Given that I have only included a subset of my entire repository in iTunes I will then end up with a mess of mediafiles on my external drive where some are doublicated while others aren't. I will be impossible to figure out afterwards what is included in iTunes and what isn't.
Hence the perfect process would be if iTunes could, while executing the import following the automation-Option (see above) and MOVE the files from the whereever and bring it to the place it want's it to be.
Is there any way to get this automated and get iTunes MOVE the files instad of copying?
That would be a tremendous help!
    Many Thanks for your thoughts!

  • External drive and sharing issues?

I've posted this question before but got no answer, so, I'll try again.
Ok here's the situation. I have a small network here at work. We (four of us) share a harddrive connected to computer A. That drive has all the client jobs on it that we all open and change and save. Lately and sporadically (no rhyme or reason) computer B, C, or D may try to open a job and it will say "access denied" and can not open it at all –OR– computer B can open it but will not be able to save it again in the same location. Now even though computer B can't do one of the two things listed computer C and D can open, fix and save with no issues. Again most of the time but not everytime.
Is there a way to fix this "sharing/permissions" issue? It's a bit frustrating.
I have opened the drive we are using and "got info" and assigned every individual listed full access and rights and that did not fix it.
What am I missing here? Or is this a system X issue with permissions and I just have to live with it?
Future plans are going to a server system which I assume will fix the problem but for now this is my set-up and looking for a fix. Thanks
    G4

Couldn't you choose to "ignore permissions on this volume"
for the whole external drive; and then (hopefully) all of the
users would have no immediate sharing message issues?
Of course, when articles or documents have several updates
and more than one author contributing to their content, the
files themselves may develop permissions issues.
Among the casual reading I do on computer topics, I read
more than I need to know, so I know the answer is out
there and not terribly hard to implement; yet unfortunately
I do not recollect the path to the argument on how to do it.
There is a fairly simple outline of a way to handle some of
this stuff in the following page/link; more detailed info is
on the additional page/links which follow after this one:

Among the security documents (download .PDFs) on OS X
there are some fairly good paths to implementing security
to include how to change permissions & privileges; as part
of the overall security strategy; some of those documents
covering these matters are in the Server security setup docs
from Apple Support's database. I have three .PDFs saved.
These vary from 2MB to about 5MB each.

  • External Drive Won't Automatically Sleep

I have a Seagate BackUp Plus 1TB external hard drive connected by USB 3.0 to my iMac running 10.10.1. The external hard drive will not automatically go to sleep when the energy saver settings put the iMac to sleep, but it will sleep if I manually put the iMac to sleep. I added a new Brother wireless laser printer replacing a similar printer but older model, but with a new driver. That is the only change I've made other than updating Flash for Safari. Neither of those changes seem likely to be the cause of my hard drive sleep problem.

    Colin,
No solution for you, but I just want to add that I installed a MyBook Studio II a few days ago and I have exactly the same problem. Didn't have time to investigate a lot yet.

  • Reformatting an external drive for sharing over airport

I have an external hard drive that I would like to share across my network plugged into an airport extreme router.  I will be using both MAC and Windows computers.  Do I have to reformat the drive before using it and if so do I use Mac or Windows for reformatting.
    Thanks

You can use either Mac OS Exended (Journaled).....recommended....or FAT16 or FAT 32 to format the hard drive prior to connecting it to the AirPort Extreme.
See this Apple support document for details:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2426
Keep in mind that the USB port on the AirPort Extreme is under powered, so it may be necessary to use a powered USB hub with the hard drive.....even if he hard drive has its own power supply.

  • Trouble sharing external drive on network

I have an 8 TB external drive connected to an old G5 on my network. There are 5 MacPros connected to the network -- all OS10.8. I want to be able to drop files onto the external drive for sharing/storage. File Sharing is on, but I cannot write to the disk, even from the G5 it is connected to. The "owner" of the external disk is logged in on the G5. What to do?? Thank you.

I tried that but still can't see the external drive. All I can see are the G5's public folder and shared folder.
Another thing - the owner of the drive is on a standard account (not Admin). Does that make a difference? Thanks.

  • The MacBook Pro will not allow me to cut-and-paste to and from or to click-and-drag to the external drive. I can copy-and-paste, but then I must send the original to the trash, which doubles the time and effort. Is there any way to cut-and-paste?

I have recently switched from a PC to a MacBook Pro.
I have a large number of documents and photographs on a multiterrabite external drive, backed up on a second multiterrabite external drive.
Both external drives are formatted for MacIntosh. This has been verified by agents at an Apple store and also at Best Buy in two different cities.
    This is the problem:
The MacBook Pro will not allow me to cut-and-paste to and from or to click-and-drag to the external drive. I can copy-and-paste, but then I must send the original to the trash, which doubles the time and effort. Is there any way to cut-and-paste?
Also, the MacBook Pro will not allow me to rename multiple documents or photographs. I can click-and-rename a single one, but this is impossibly time consuming. I can batch-rename in iPhoto, but when I transfer the photographs to the external drive, the rename does not transfer.
I’m reduced to using my wife’s Toshiba to cut-and-past, rename, and transfer documents. It works perfectly. Is there any way to do this on the MacBook Pro?

No, this is a philosophical difference between Apple and Microsoft. Apple believes that it's dangerous to cut a file in case the user never pastes it; in that case the file is lost. Microsoft seems to not have this problem (if I remember Windows correctly) because they don't delete the originating file if it's cut but never pasted.
Even though Macs have a lot of keyboard shortcuts, philosophically Macs have traditionally been mouse-first. This applies to file copy operations. In your case, what a Mac user would do is open the source window, open the destination window (on your second drive), and then Command-drag the selected files from the source to destination window. This is because a normal drag would leave the originals behind, while adding the Command modifier key tells OS X that this is a Move, not a Copy, so don't leave the originals behind.
(In addition there are different rules for drag-copying within the same volume or between different volumes. If you drag between two folders on the same volume, the files are moved. If you drag between different volumes, the files are copied unless you hold down Command to delete the copies on the source volume.)

Two problems in this case. First, batch file renaming is not built into OS X unless you build something with Automator. However, there are many utilities that can do batch file renaming which you can find at macupdate.com or on the App Store. Since I work with media I often batch rename using one of the media managers I have lying around like Media Pro or Adobe Bridge (comes with Photoshop).
iPhoto is a database front end designed to shield the file system from the consumer and let them concentrate on creativity and sharing. As such it is often a poor choice for managing files directly. When you "transferred the photographs" chances are you moved the originals, not the ones iPhoto edited which are stored in a hidden folder.

There will not be a way to do it exactly like Windows. As described above, there are ways to do it "the Mac way." If it is possible to remove judgment on which way is "better" you might find the Mac way to be acceptable, but of course sometimes we simply prefer what we're used to.

  • Restore iphoto library from external drive

    Help - I'm in a panic!
Our iPhoto library is housed on an external drive, and opens automatically from that external drive when we plug a device in or open iPhoto. I plugged in my iPhone today to upload photos, I was prompted to update to a newer version of iPhoto, and upon completing the update my iPhoto library now says that it is corrupted and needs to be backed up. I can't find the library in Time Machine to back it up - it is not detecting my external drive when I go to past backups. Help! How do I restore my library?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Problem with 2 External Drives on my new iMac

I am having a problem when I daisy-chain a second external HD to my first external HD connected to my new iMac. This is the second external HD I've tried this with, with similar problems arising.
My setup: OS 10.5.6. First external HD: G-Tech Q 1TB; 2nd External HD: also a G-Tech Q 1TB (the first time I was daisy-chaining a LaCie 250GB drive to my first external drive).
Problem: when my second external HD is daisy-chained to the first external HD my system starts to go wonky. I can't force quit apps for one. My system hangs. On reboot I don't get past the blue screen. If I remove the daisy-chain all is fine.
I initially had this problem with another external HD I tried to daisy-chain to the first. Same issue.
I was trying to partition the second external using Disk Utility. When I hit the Partition button, Disk Utility just hung with the beach ball.
When I attached a second external the first time I tried to do this all sorts of havoc ensued. A lot of apps were hanging and I couldn't Force Quit them. The whole system seemed to go wonky.
Can anyone tell me what might be happening here?

I've been doing a bit of research on these boards about daisy-chaining problems and am reading that sometimes daisy-chaining can overwhelm the Firewire bus and even corrupt data. This is what I had experienced the first time I tried to daisy-chain. Someone recommended a powered Firewire repeater (like this: http://tinyurl.com/kl84n5) would be a better solution.
Given I've got only 1 Firewire port on my iMac, what do you think?

  • Share or Backup Project to External Drive

    Ok,
I've figured out a solution, and it probably isn't the best.  I couldn't really find answers around, so I thought I'd post this to either; a) help or b) get better ideas.
It should be noted that FCPX crashed a couple of times while I tested this on my MBP.  I found the FCP manual to be a little lacking on this subject, but I wanted to be able to work with a project on an internal media drive on my Mac Pro, then move it to external drives for sharing & backup purposes.  Here's what I came up with:
    1.  From the media drive root, copy the "Final Cut Events" & "Final Cut Projects" folders to the root of the external drive.
    2.  If you have published specific motion generators or titles for your project, you will need to copy the "Motion" folder from the Username>Movies>Motion folder to the external drive. . . if you will be using another computer for this project, you will need to add all the relevant files to the new computer's Username>Movies>Motion folders so that everything is accessible from there (as far as I know, FCPX won't recognize them unless they are installed there).
    3.  Be sure you've copied any external files (i.e. ProRes files stored on your media drive, imported into FCPX, but original media stayed in it's initial location outside the Final Cut Events folder).
This last part is the trickiest because I've found that those clips won't reconnect using "Modify Event References" when you get to the new workstation (or at least it's never worked for me).  However, I've found a trick that works great for this:
    4. To reconnect media, have FCPX open to a PROJECT TIMELINE with missing media.  Open a Finder window to a parent folder containing all folders & files that may contain disconnected media.  Do a search for ".mov" and narrow the search to the parent folder by clicking its name at the top.  Click the "+" at the top-right and change the Kind from "Any" to "Movie."
    5.  Drag all the resulting movies from the Finder window (BUT DO NOT LET GO OF THE FILES) and hover them over the timeline.  If this search contains some media you don't want in that event, it would add them if you dropped these files.  Instead, just hover over your timeline until FCPX appears ready to add the clips, then drag them BACK to the Finder window!  Now, when you click on the event in FCPX, you will see the clips reconnected!
    6.  Repeat steps 4-5 but replace ".mov" and "Movie" with something like "aif" and "Music" for any audio files you have.
I hope that wasn't too confusing.  I should have just done a screencast since it probably took me longer to type!  Please let me know if anyone has a better solution.
    Thanks,
    Lawrence

    Thanks Andy,
I saw that post, and thought the correct answer listed didn't really cover some of the caveats I have encountered (like the published Motion generators), nor the issue of reconnecting (which hopefully will be an issue resolved soon).  I have tried deleting the pref's file on the new machine, but I didn't get great results.  So I just thought I'd try to combine my issues more succinctly here.
As far as making a copy of the whole media drive, that's not really what I want either.  I would like to be able to move the specific projects to an external drive that backs up my active media drive projects & events, but then be able to also quickly move them to archived drives and delete them from my internal media & media backup drives.  As my archives go, I will usually designate drives for clients who do a lot of work.
So for my purposes, I am using Chronosync to synchronize certain folders.
I appreciate your help.  Always appreciated all the great support we get from knowledgeable guys like yourself!

  • Acomdata external drive MAC using SecureHD LogIn.

Has anyone figured out how to update Acomdata external drive to use on MAC using SecureHD LogIn?
The only way now is to launch the PC side of MAC, sign in then suspend the PC side, then the drive appears on the MAC desktop and can be used. This is a pain!

    Hi pealo86
If your going to be using the External HD strictly for backing up the iMac, ie Time Machine or Cloning with SuperDuper or CarbonCloner, then you will want to reset the Partition Map Scheme to *GUID Partition Table* and the Format to *Mac OS Extended* (Journaled).
adding these DU instructions > http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/partitioningtiger.html
If however you wish to use the External Drive for sharing files between OS X and Windows then you will either need the Mac software that JGG has suggested or need to reset the Drive Format to MS-DOS FAT-32, which unfortunately has a file size limit of 4GB.
