My external hard drive stays on even after I turn off my iMac. Why?

New 24” iMac (see below)
I have connected my 800 Firewire LaCie 500 Gigabyte external hard drive and it works fine. However, it doesn't turn off after I have turned off my iMac! I used Tiger before this and the very same LaCie external drive always turned off (its blue light would go off).
I am sure that my iMac is Off and is not actually still On.
Please advise, because I am not sure what could happen to my LaCie hard drive if it stays on constantly.
As for the iMac, since the instructions mention turning if off, I figure that turning it off is not harmful. Various people at the Apple Store have told me that keeping the iMac on 24 hours a day is not detrimental to the machine but I am old fashioned, I guess...... with that old fashioned paranoia about letting machines stay on all day. If I am wrong, please tell me.

Dear Dennis at LaCie support: Thank you so much for your reply. I did what you said and did indeed discover that when I unplug the LaCie 500 gig hard drive from my iMac, the hard drive turns off, which proves that there is powering still sent through the FireWire bus. It did not turn off with Tiger on my older iMac (the round white semi-circular base iMac).
BTW: I also have a LaCie 125 gig external hard drive bought several years ago. I am assuming that it has a FireWire which is rated at that 400 rather than the 800 that my 500 gig hd has. Am I right? If yes, then I will look for the cord that matches that hd. I hope that LaCie prints the number on the cord because if not, I will have a hard time.
I do see that on the new 24“ Intel iMac, the 800 port is the one farthest to the right in the back of the iMac, and the 400 port is to the left of it.
Wish me luck. I still have to figure out how I will use the 125 gig. I am now using the 500 gig for the Time Machine backups and the .Mac Backup. Also, other of the usual.
Thank you again,, Dennis. Makes me glad I bought La Cie hard drives.
I hope that the smaller one doesn't fritz up on me, since I bought it several years ago.

On Nov. 22, after having to erase and restore my WD My Passport for Mac external hard drive (per WD tech support) then rebacking up the iMac, I noted that three events loaded into iPhoto in Sept., Oct. and early Nov. had disappeared. They certainly had been there because I printed out several images from these events.  Now they have vanished but everything through August and after Nov. 22 is there. Seems impossible. How  could something disappear from the hard drive? Apple tech was unable to explain or provide a solution. Has anyone else ever had something like this happen?

How did you reformat the EHD? It should be OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored.
If the drive is formatted correctly do the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
    2 - run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

I replaced my hard drive and I backed up my files on an external hard drive but when I reloaded my iweb to my imac none of my files were on it so I can't make changes to my Published web site have I lost my files what can I do

By default iWeb keeps its data in (user)/Library/Application Support/iWeb in a file named Domain. Without this file you cannot proceed (other than by recreating the site from scratch using the published version as a reference) so you need to locate it on the original disk.
To confuse matters, Apple have hidden the user’s Library folder in Lion and Mountain Lion to casual viewers, in an attempt to stop new Mac users messing their machines up. To access it, in the Finder go to the ‘Go’ menu and hold down the Option (Alt) key; the Library folder will appear as a choice.

Is this external drive a Time Machine backup?
Then find what you want using Time Machine (or whatever application you used to make the backup).
Your iPhoto pictures are in the iPhoto library in Users/Pictures.

  • External hard drive is not recognized after attempt to format

I just got a new macbook and couldn't use my external hard drive because it was formatted on a PC and only allowed me to read the data. I backed up the data on the 250gb hd and then used Disk Utility to erase the hd and format it as "Mac OS extended (journaled)." After beginning, Disk Utility stopped working and showed up as "not responding" in the Activity Monitor.
Now the hd does not show up on the desktop and can only be seen in Disk Utility. If I try to erase again or partition the hd the utility stops responding. If I try to zero out the drive it continues to say "preparing to zero" indefinately. Now the hd is also not recognized by windows except in the windows disk utility, but it does not even give the option of formatting/initializing it, so that is not an option.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this before, or have any idea of something that I haven't tried yet. I really want to get the drive working and have exhausted all the ideas I can come up with. The internet has not provided too many ideas either.
Thanks so much for your help.
Black MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I have crazy solution to format it to FAT 32, it work a couple times on my several MAxtor, and Western Digital HD. But this is the last resort and if you are not handy and familiar, don't do it.
It happen on my external HD, so I crack the enclosure open, pulled the HD out and attached it as internal HD on a PC after adjusting the jumper to master and make sure no other HD attached to the motherboard. Make sure the motherboard detected (you can see it from bios menu).
Insert a bootable installer disk before XP ('98, ME, or 2000), and start from there until a promt comes, and type fdisk and you delete the old partition and create a new partition and restart once using the disk still and format it using FAT 32.
After that you put it back to the enclosure, and mount it to MacBook as a new HD with default factory format.
If you don't have the installer disk, this might help :
    http://www.bootdisk.com/
But if your maxtor still under warranty better talk to them first and they might willing to reformat it for you.
Hope this help your external back and let you use it on your MacBook.

  • All external hard drives not being seen after working for months

    I have a 27" iMac, 10.7.2.
This morning I had 4 external hard drives attached via a powered hub, 2 x 2TB and 2 x1TB (all Freecom) formatted as MAC OS extended Journaled, one acting as the time machine backup.
All were working and being recognised/seen on the desktop and finder and working normally. I shut down the system and moved the machine to a new office made all the same connections, but now none of the drives are available, they are not even visible on the desktop.
I have tried them directly connected to the usb ports with no luck, I have tried rebooting in safe mode and reset both SMC and PRAM (after looking at various threads)
I have also tried a USB stick which also does not appear on the desktop (or anywhere else), all other peripherals work with the USB ports.
This is a real problem as there is almost 4 terabytes of material and four years work!, any suggestions would be greatfully received.

You mentioned  you did a SMC reset, because different models of Mac's have different procedures for doing a SMC reset you may have done it incorrectly meaning you didn't do one at all! Did you do it like this?
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • External Hard Drive doesn't work after Time Machine cancelation

    First post on the forum.
So far i've had 2 hard drives broken because of a simple Time Machine.
I own a MBP and an HP so my hard drives usually have 2 partitions, one for mac, the other for pc. About a month or so i was doing a Time Machine on my Iomega 1TB (the partition used for the time machine is formatted in Mac Os Expanded (with journaling)),  and, because the time machine was extremely slow i stopped it. Then came the problems. I tried to connect the Iomega to the mac, but the partition in which i had the time machine doesn't mount. the other partition is mountable and i even managed to delete some files in it, so it worked. But now the partitions don't mount. I can still see the two partitions in Disk Utility, with the correct names i gave them, but cannot mount.
Right now i don't have the disk with me because i went to a "professional" to try and at least recover my files. What a joke that was. First they told me they had my recovered files and them the files were not mine. The switched the disks and gave me someone elses files. And now they ask me for 1100$ to recover my files because it is a hardware malfunction. Obviously i dont have that amount of money available and i cannot afford the recovery atm, and i do not believe that a software can cause hardware to fail. (just guessing)
Resume: 1 external hard drive, with 2 partitions, one mac os expanded and the other is a Windows NT Filesystem. None of the partitions are corrently mounting on mac but the disk utility recognizes the partitions and the names i gave them.
So guys can u help a poor little girl that needs her photographies so that she can go and show her portfolio to get a job. :/
    Kinda desperate at this point.
ps: sorry for bad english, second language

    One can't read the other.
Just to be clear Mac's can read/write FAT32 but windows cannot use OS X Extended. So to use a drive on both systems it needs to be formatted FAT32
FAT32 does have limitations and possibly the best solution is to use NTFS, a more modern, robust filesystem. The drawback here is that OS X does not natively read NTFS so a third party kernel extension is needed.

  • External hard drives won't mount after upgrading to Tiger 10.4.9. Help!

Hi, I've just got the latest iMac. Very excited! I did all the software updates, connected my Western Digital extended hard drive so that I could copy some files over onto my new Mac. It was fine at first. Then when I wanted to open up the external hard drive icon on my desktop again and double clicked on it, everything disappeared from the screen for a few seconds, then reappeared but my external hard drive simply opened the window to my personal hard drive on the Mac. The WD links to my computer via Firewire. I then connected my USB external hard drive stick and it was the same story.
I used Disk Utility to test everything and everything was fine.
I then reinstalled Mac OSX 10.4.8 and plugged in my external hard drives. Everything worked perfectly. After copying over documents and a couple of programs, and downloading a few more programs, I ran my software updates again, upgrading the operating system to Tiger 10.4.9. I attached my external hard drive and it was the same problem all over again.
I the read up the online discussions and also chatted to an Apple dealer, and their advice was to download the Intel Combo and reinstall the operating system. I have just done this and my external hard drives will still not mount properly. Their icons appear on screen but double click them and everything disappears.
Please help. This is really frustrating as I have a backlog of work to do and I seem to be wasting hours on this. Not only that, this is a brand new machine which I rightly expect to work straight away.
I look forward to your response. Thank you in advance.

Hi, try to put your HDD in other Mac and look if appear the same, also you can try to repair permission.

  • External hard drive does not mount after sleep

I am using a brand new Seagate 2 TB external hard drive for my backup drive.  More often than not, when the computer goes to sleep, the icon for the drive is gone from the desktop when the computer wakes up.  I have to unplug it from the computer and reconnect it, then it mounts and works fine.  I have it plugged directly into the computer's USB port.  The drive uses USB3.  As far as I can tell, it does not exceed the power requirements of the USB port.  It is the only external hard drive I am using at the moment.
I should note that the same thing was happening with my last hard drive.  That was a Western Digital 250 GB drive with an independant power source connected by firewire.
I am running OS 10.6.8 on an Intel circa 2009 iMac.  My external drives worked fine for years, and it seems in the last year or so is when this started happening.

    r_dizzle wrote:
Another point of note is that both the HD and the keyboard are connected to the iMac through a 7 port USB hub.
I think this might be the issue. If the iMac is waking back up, it will likely be waking up this HUB, but the HUB might not be re-initialising the connection between OS X and the external drive or the keyboard.
After waking the iMac, if you unplug the external drive from the HUB, then plug it back in again, does OS X pick it up again? Have you tried plugging the external drive directly into the iMac and then testing what the result is?
If you read back on what you've said, you pointed out that you have a USB mouse that you use to wake the iMac from sleep. Is this mouse directly connected to the iMac? If so, it surely can't be a coincidence that a directly connected USB device can wake the iMac from sleep, but any USB devices connected to the iMac via a USB HUB cannot.
I would suggest you test the drive as it is directly connected to the iMac. I would complete the same test with the keyboard too. I think you'll find it's the USB HUB.
    I hope this helps.

  • External hard drive is still full after deleting files

I everyone, i really need some help with my hard drive. I have the Lacie 500gb firewire hard drive. I am save most of my short films, and other works on it while using final cut. While rendering videos recently , its said that i needed to free up space. When i right click and click on the get info for the hard drive, it told me 493.34gb has been used. I have deleted almost all the huge files i have on there after uploading to my cloud, but its making no difference. Its not freeing up any space. and I'm now at 497gb. Now i have almost totally deleted everything on it, and its still saying i have only about 2.7gb left on it.
I really can't afford to go and get another hard drive right now and just need to free up some space on this hard drive to continue working.
Please tell me what i am doing wrong so i can free up much necessary space on this drive.
    I anxiously await your assistance.
    thanks a whole lot!!

Dig deep, because it sounds like your best solution is to actually get another External Hard Drive.
I don't normally recommend inexpensive USB portable hard drives for everyday use, but that might be a good solution for old files that you would really rather save than trash to make room.

  • External hard drive not readable anymore after a blackout.

We had a blackout yesterday and now my external drive comes up as not readable, it has all my iTunes as well as photo's that are not replaceable. When I attempted to repair permissions, it would only allow me to delete and re-format the hard drive, which I haven't done as I don't want to loose all my stuff. I can't even access my time machine to go back to before the black out. Please help.

Do not attempt to perform a permissions repair. That is not related to the problem you are experiencing.
Do you have that external hard drive set up as a single partition or multiple partitions? If multiple partitions, are all the partitions failing to mount?
Regardless, you are going to have to move to a more robust (and expensive) method of recovering your data than is available with the tools provided by Mac OS X. Your best chance of recovering your data without spending an inordinate amount of money is DiskWarrior:
    http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
If the data is very valuable to you and you really really can't lose it, then you might care to try a profesional data recovery laboratory. It is extremely expensive – thousands of dollars whether they are successful or not. There are many good labs; here's one:
    http://www.datarecoverylabs.com/
In the future, you simply have to learn to keep redundant backups. Keeping active files on the same device as your backups makes no sense at all; you might as well not bother creating the backups if you're going to do that. Read here for good advice on backups:

  • External hard drive for maintaining Mavericks after Yosemite upgrade

    Hey guys,
Here's my situation. I have some software that won't be compatible with Yosemite in the fall but I want to be able to continue to use it as I do with Mavericks. Can I get an external hard drive like G aluminum 1T model and run OSX 10.9.4 and this software on it and still upgrade my mid 2010 macbook pro to Yosemite?
    Thanks,
    Mike

After you get the external drive, attach and open Disk Utility.  Choose the new drive from the left sidebar, then in the main panel choose Partition and set the number of partitions you want...you can use the default of 1 if that is what you want.  Then Name the drive so you can spot it on the desktop.  Format should be Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), and partition table GUID.  Apply and confirm you want to erase the drive.  Close Disk Utility.
Now, you can use a program like Carbon Copy Cloner (now costs $40 but you can use if for free for 30-days) to make a bootable clone of your current drive on the external drive.  That way you have everything from the internal and you can boot your current Mac OS X if you want to or Yosemite after that comes out.
    You will then have options

  • External Hard Drive No Longer Working After Being Removed From Mac

The following issue is happening to two other mac users that i know and its quite frustrating.
So if an external hard drive is not ejected properly from a mac, it then cannot be recognised by any other Mac’s. This issue is not isolated to just one external hard drive.
Then if i plug the external hard drive/s into my 8 year old Dell (PC) it works fine.
Further to this when i check the hidden files on the PC it looks as though Old Apple imbeds the external HD with a bunch of useless hidden files, once these are all deleted it miraculously works  again on the Mac’s.
Too bad if you only have a Mac Because if the Mac disk utility can read the External HD it says that the disk has crashed and needs to be replaced.
    Nice one Apple...
    So now for my questions.
Why does mac add hidden files to an external hard drive when not ejected properly that prevents it from operating again on a Mac ?!!!!
How do i prevent apple from adding these hidden files?

Can you see the drive in Disk Utility? If so, try selecting it and using the Mount button in the top menu. You can also run repair disk and repair permissions.

Below is the message I receive when I plug in the 1TB hard drive.
The NTFS volume that you're trying to mount (/dev/rdisk3s1) has not been unmounted properly.
This may mean that the volume is in an inconsistent state, and mounting it with NTFS-3G could lead to data loss. You are recommended to attach the drive to a Windows computer and unmount it properly with the "Safe remove hardware" feature to guarantee the safety of your NTFS volume.
    Please help.

Have you tried the recommended steps?  If the Windoze machine won't allow you to safely eject, restart the computer and try ejecting again.
