My external HD is freezing

Hello! I just got this New Macbook today. My problem is the fact that when I connect my own Hard drive enclosure from my G5 is freezing my computer when I want to look into my folders from my old harddrive. Why is this happening?!

Please anyone help me! The first time I plugged it into my macbook the computer got the hard drive immediately. Now when I re-plugged back in the macbook nothing came out and I went into Disk Utility and I don't know what to do next.

  • Why is external hard drive freezing on iTunes upload?

I have been having problems with uploading music from an external hard drive into iTunes for about a month and I do not know what to do. I recently purchased a HP Envy 15 running Windows 7 64bit home edition. I decided to scrub my iTunes library and start new with uploading selected CDs and purchases from both Apple and Amazon onto the external hard driv e (Western Digital 1TB). Putting the music on the external hard drive is not an issue as I see that all of my music files are there. However, when it comes to adding all my music folders into iTunes the problem starts. The upload will get to song 200-300 and both the hard drive and program will freeze. When I first purchased the laptop I tried the same thing and connecting my iPod classic to the laptop and had the same issue causing my whole computer to freeze following by the blue screen of death. Concerned, I sent my laptop to HP to fix thinking my USB drives were bad. I just received back a week ago and I am having a repeat issue minus the blue screen of death. Again, putting my CDs onto the external hard drive was not a problem at all, but when I want to add my Amazon MP3 files, other iTunes music and other folders my external hard drive freezes.
I have my external plugged into the USB 3.0 port while attempting the upload and not sure if this is the issue. I am also unsure if enough power is getting to the hard drive during upload as I have read about this being an issue for some users. Can anyone provide any assistance on this? I am trying to avoid putting all 5000-7000 songs on my main drive to get my music back on my iPod and find this super annoying. Any assistance would be great, thanks.

Nope, one of the selling points of the drive was that it came ready to work with both Mac and Windows (the product description says there is an NTFS drive installed for use on Mac).  No hacking or installing on my part.
But I think I figured it out.  Apparentely, Mavericks comes installed with something that does not allow it to write NTFS no matter what (well, unless you go through a whole bunch of technical stuff to rewrite the software).  My old MacBook was Leopard.
I'll just reformat the external hard drive for Mac, and if I ever need to use it on a Windows, I'll install HFS+ Explorer on the Windows.  Oh well.

  • Sync Problems with External HD, iTunes freezes

I sync all my music without any problems from teh computer's hard drive (HP Notebook ze4805, AMD Athlon 2800, 512KB, 60GB, XP).
The photo sync is directed to folder on a Seagate 300GB external hardrive which the computer regognizes and iTunes sees all its subfolders.
Once the music sync finishes and the photo sync is ready to start the iTunes simply freezes and do not respond anymore. It does not sync one single picture and the external HD is not accesed becuase the activity ligh does not blink at all. I am able to stream from that same external hard drive connected to my main home computer (HP, Intel, 2 GB, 200GB, XP) but I want to have all the photos for faster access on the Apple TV.
I tried synchronizing one folder at the time instead of the whole 20K pictures but same result.
Can anyone help me? I have spend many hours trying to figure this one out. Thanks

I have a 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo Mac Mini with 1GB of DDR2 RAM Memory. My HD is connected via USB 2.0 directly to my computer. It would be really great if you could tell me what might be the problem since my HD crashed again and this is the 3rd time in two months.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Problem importing video to MY Book external. Video freezes-Drive disappears

New Western Digital My Book 320. Formatted and partitioned Mac OS Extended. When importing, video on import window will freeze, then catch up. After a few times of doing this during import... the external drive will disappear and I'll get an error message saying drive disconnected improperly. Geek at Best Buy thought I had a bad drive, but now the replacement doing it. No problem importing to my internal drive.
I suppose I could import to internal, then move to external, but that kinda defeats the purpose.
    Any help appreciated. Thanks.
    David

It sounds like you are doing everything right. I can only say it is working for me.
I currently capture to a Western Digital 1TB MyBook Studio Edition over Firewire 800. It works great for both DV and AVCHD, although AVCHD is not in real time.
Before that, I captured DV to a Western Digital MyBook 500GB over firewire 400.
    Some random things to try:
    1) Are you at version 7.1.1 (and run Disk Utility/Repair Permissions after the upgrade)?
    2) Are you running Time Machine? Is it kicking off during your capture?
    3) Are you running an AntiVirus Program?
    4) What camera do you have? Some Canons are known for not playing nice with other Firewire Devices.

  • SB Live 24Bit External: Reproducible System Freeze after installing Windows Upda

I have a SB Li've! 24Bit External and am quite content with it. However, my Windows Update has recently installed the following updates:
    - Cumulati've Security Update for IE, KB9282
    - Cumulati've Security update for OE, KB9567
    - Tool for Spyware Removal, KB890830
    - Security Update for Windows XP, KB90853
    - Security Update for Windows XP, KB9562
I suspect one of the last two ones to be at fault. Afterwards, my computer froze completely on the Windows startup screen whenever the SB came up. I could verify that it was the SB by removing the USB cable (which solved the issue) and plugging in again later to the running system (which brough the freeze again).
A was able to get a running system again by using the System Recovery, but I'd *really* like to install those updates (. to be a little more safe and 2. because the Windows Update nagging me about those updates is really annoying).

This has got to be the craziest IRQ table that I have ever seen. Windows will not let me change any of the settings. It doesn't seem kocher, and I am pretty knowlegible from other systems I have set up, but not this one. I have been keeping a few charts to see if anything changes, and these have changed since this morning, though nothing else has been installed. I know they shouldn't share as they do, but it won't let me have control over these. Am I am doing something drastically wrong. On USB is Epson 760, Logi cordless opticle mouse, and MS Internet KB with combo PS2 / USB 2 port hub. I have the mouse plugged into KB. HERE GOES:
    IRQ 0 :  Sys timer
    IRQ 1 :  Keyboard

  • New Firewire external hard drive freezes

I have an external USB hard drive, and it works fine if I test it by copying and pasting 10 .jpg files (total ~ 2Meg) to the external USB hard drive from the internal hard drive. I got a new external firewire hard drive and if I try the same test, it freezes mid-copy. (It just sits there forever and I actually have to power down to get it to un-freeze).
It's a brand new Acomdata 250GB firewire external hard drive.
    What could be wrong?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I'd return the drive. Get a drive from
    Otherworld Computing
Granite Digital (they make cases to go around internal drives)
    LaCie
    Cooldrives
These are the only ones I know to reliably work under Mac OS X 10.3 or higher.

  • Sony CD-RW CRX140E external CD burner freezes

    Hallo,
Since the latest update of OSX 10.4.7 to 10.4.8 I can't use my external Sony CD-RW CRX140E burner. Also in iTunes as in Finder when I try to burn files, the CD-RW CRX140E is not recognized. iTunes and Finder say that the empty CD is full. Sometimes my iMac freezes. Can you help me?

I downloaded and installed again the MacOS X 10.4.8 patch. Afterwards it worked properly

  • PX6-300D + External USB Drive = Freeze

I am trying to use an external USB drive as my Macintosh TimeMachine drive.
However, my PX6-300D is freezing some time after external USB drive is connected.
The only protocol enable is AFP.
This is a bug? What could be happening?
    Thanx any help.

Are you able to test with a different USB drive? This will help to determine if it is the drive or NAS that is the problem.

  • Macbook pro HELP! not recognizing external Hdd and freezing

Hey guys, i need to know why my toshiba external drive works at times and shows up on my desktop and sometimes the external hard drive lights up but is undiscoverable and doesnt show on the desktop? I have also recently noticed that when i plug items into the usb port, the trackpad freezes up. Can you please tell me why it freezes? My macbook pro is only 6 months old is it supposed to be doing this?

I'm not sure why your external drive will not mount, but your computer defintely should not have a 'frozen' trackpad when you plug in USB devices. Since your machine is relatively new, take it in to your nearest Apple Store or an AASP and have them run diagnostics on it.
What you describe is not normal behavior.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

I just purchase WRT610n router, when I connect my external  WD250  into the router the USB port freezes and it is not seen in storage. Is there something I can do to make this WD hard drive work or do I have to purchase  a WD My Book or Seagate Agent .

  • External track pad freezes

I have a brand new macmini and a brand new track pad.  For whatever reason the trackpad randomly freezes.  Sometimes it just starts working again after a few seconds other times I have to close the program I am in - mostly firefox - to get the thing working again.  I have read many threads; however, many seem to deal with trackpads on laptops and not external trackpads.  I have seen many suggestions to turn off "ignore accidental input" however, I don't have that option - at least that I can find - on an external trackpad.
Any thoughts would be appreciated except using a hammer - already thought of that one but it usually doesn't work.  (Believe me I have tried in the past)
    Thanks in advance

I purchased a blackberry 8520 in November 2009 and for the last week or so, the tracker pad constantly freezes. I am unable to scroll through the menu options, which is very frustrating. Its quite temperamental as it will work for about 5 minutes and then not work at all for hours. Does anybody have a solution please , is it the software or a physical problem? It should still be under warranty but this is highly inconvenient. thankyou x

  • MacBook - External modem causing freezing

    Hi
My MacBook keeps locking up when connected to my external dial-up modem. It's fine without it and when connected via airport, but hangs constantly when connected to the external modem.
Sometimes it takes 5-6 restarts to get it to connect, then it hangs after 4 mins online. Then the next day it'll connect no problem and stay online for over an hour ?
    All help gratefully received
    Matt.

I also ran into this with my MacBookPro 2.33 C2D.
All I can say is Macintosh 2008 is JUST LIKE Windoze 98 cough Intel.
    Here's the deal:
    * The USB2 port on the right side is on the same bus as the Keyboard and the Trackpad. If you connect an external modem to this port you'll see that the Keyboard, Trackpad and your modem are in the list [hence the same bus].
    * When I was on a dicey connection, and on the rightside USB plug --the modem would FREEZE and also cause the keyboard and trackpad to freeze within 4 minutes of connecting. The only thing I could do is hit the powerkey to get the shutdown dialog.
    * I've moved the modem to the LEFT plug by the Mag Connect AC Adaptor. No restart. But did check the system profiler, the modem is not sharing a USB bus. So far I've been on for 25 minutes and am now typing this at leisure.
    So:
1/ Check System Profiler. If you're sharing a USB port that has the mouse/trackpad/keyboard, with a pokey external modem and it crashes.. guess what?
2/ Move and verify that the modem occupies ITS OWN port.
3/ Think happy thoughts, and hope that Apple hires more QE.
Seriously, I remember Windoze machines that would have IRQ and other port conflicts with the modem and the peripherals. Oh. Look how far we've come.
    -Leo M
    retired QE,
    gee Apple, are you hiring?
    Not.

  • Boot from external SSD cause freeze

    I bought a Samsung 830 SSD ( 256 GB model MZ-7PC256D )
I planned to connect it to my 27" 3.5 GHz Intel i7 iMac (mid 2011) via thunderbolt with the Seagate GoFlex adapter and use it as primary boot drive.
I installed Lion (I'm running OS X 10.7.5) on the new external drive using the OS X Recovery.
Everything runs fine and very fast except that system randomly freeze.
I can't open/close apps and the spinning beachball appears. I can't do anything other than power-off holding down the power button.
I disabled the "disk sleep" option, disk seems ok (I checked the status and said verified) but system keeps freezing.
It appears that after the first freeze, soon occur a second one.
Also, I noticed strange(?) sound (something like tock) from the adapter/SSD during the normal use.
I searched for the word error in the Console at the corresponding freeze time and this strings came out:
17/12/12 18:04:06,000 kernel: SMC::smcInitHelper ERROR: MMIO regMap == NULL - fall back to old SMC mode
17/12/12 18:04:09,043 WindowServer: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.

    17/12/12 18:04:17,891 talagent: CGSReleaseWindow(cid, wid): CGError 1001 on line 759
    [Here the complete error log]
    Any suggest?

I'm not certain this is the culprit, but the overall consensus that I've read online points to the fact that most (or all?) available external Thunderbolt drive enclosures that are *bus-powered only* (so no independent power brick with the enclosure) have difficulty providing enough power to SSD's that exceed ~240GB. And without enough power the system freezes or causes other errors.
Here's at least one thorough examination that came to this conclusion:
    http://wolfgangtechnology.blogspot.com/2012/06/mac-with-seagate-thunderbolt-adap ter.html
The solution, from what I've read at least, is to find a Thunderbolt adapter with an independent power source or use a smaller SSD (under 240GB it seems) that is capable of running on bus-power only.
I'm looking into doing the same as you (using external SSD as primary boot drive) but there aren't that many relatively-affordable enclosures to choose from at this point (off the top of my head just the Seagate GoFlex, Buffalo Ministation, and Lacie offerings come to mind) and there's still an outstanding question as to whether the available enclosures support the SATA III spec to really get the most out of the fastest SSD's available today.
Of note, I believe this version of Seagate's adapter (the "Desktop" version) does come with its own power brick and could solve your problem, at least according to the article I linked above.
    Hope this helps, good luck!

  • USB External HD causing freeze on boot up.

I have a Satellite A665-S6086 that I bought a little over a year ago. It's out of warranty. I have a 3 TB external hard drive that I use with this laptop. When it is plugged directly into a USB port, the laptop freezes on boot up, between the Toshiba screen and the Windows screen (the flashing cursor in the upper left corner stops flashing and there is no progression in the boot up sequence). When it is plugged in through a USB hub, there is no problem. I'd like to install a second OS on the external HD, but when it's plugged into a hub, although it registers once Windows is loaded, it doesn't show up in the boot sequence as an option (it doesn't show up in the BIOS settings when plugged in to a hub). Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I will have to wait a week to get my hands on it..
Then let's say a bit more.
If it turns out that you cannot install HWSetup, then let's access the BIOS directly outside of Windows. Or you can forget about the utility altogether if you prefer.
You access the BIOS Setup during boot by pressing the F2 key when you see the offer. If there's no offer, press the Esc key. See this Toshiba article.
BIOS Setup / BIOS settings -- access instructions
You'll see instructions in there on how to set the boot priority and how to save the new settings when you exit the BIOS.
Remember, we want to put the hard drive at the top of the list so that other ports are not interrogated during boot.

  • Every time I connect my MBP SR with an external screen, it FREEZES!!

    As the title said.
Just ordered this september. Every time I connect it with an external screen, say, a projector or the dell228E at home, it freezes. Either failed to wake from sleep (freezes when the screen was still black), or just freeze where it was.
Today it was the 4th freeze (I have to press and hold the power button to shut it down) in 30 days (I've only had it for 30 days!!).
Any clues? Should I call Apple or what? Hardware issue or software (os) issue?
    Thanks!
P.S. I don't have this issue on my own old powerbook 1.67. It was solid rock.

Please search before posting. There is already an extensive exisiting thread in this forum dealing with the same issue
