My external hd no longer shows up in fcpx

The 500gb g-drive formatted OS Extended(journaled) holds all my projects in fcpx. It shows up when I first open fcp along with my projects but then disappears. I need to do some edits!!! Please Help!!!!

Check that the root level of the drive doesn't have a folder with a name like Video or Private or DCIM or sonething that makes the app think it's a camera drive.

  • External drives no longer show up - light is on but nobody home!

    Hey all,
Still using an old iMac G4 and it works great... 10.2.8
    (and ibook 10.3.9)
plugging in some Maxtor External drives and they don't show up (mount)
I hear them. The light is on.
Checking in disk utility shows that computer senses them and says I can repair permissions (have not tried that yet) but they never appear
on the desktop. These drives are more than 5 years old and haven't been used in about a year - my mistake. use it or lose it apparently.
If anyone can throw a life raft I'll grab it.
    thanks,
    Al

    Dale,
They don't show up in Disk Util.
    Nothing to click on.
When I plug them in I get a message saying do I want to initialize or ignore?
I am assuming initialize would erase everything but there is stuff on them so I don't want to erase.
    thanks,
    Al

  • External Harddrive no longer showing up

so my old hard drive (external) has been playing up for a while, i daisy chained it to another and to my imac and tried to transfer everything so i can wipe it and reformat it. i transferred most things but now it just won't show up on my mac...
I'm using firewire, and it just won't show up no matter what i do, so even if i've lost everything i can't reformat...
    any tips?
Message was edited by: Time Machine now won't back up

Based on what you have done, I think you have eliminated as causes:
    Software (the system or settings)
The iMac's FireWire port (try the other port if you have not already)
    The FireWire cable
So the only remaining possibilities are:
    The hard drive itself
The external drive enclosure (if the case has two FireWire ports, be sure to try both)
You can test the hard drive apart from the case by removing it from the case and putting it in another case that uses the same type of drive.
Is this an iMac G4? If so, does it have USB 2.0 ports or is it the earlier model with USB 1.1?
Also, is this external hard drive (the one with the problem) the type that has its own power supply, or is it the pocket type that gets power from the FireWire connection?
One more question: If you run Disk Utility with the hard drive connected directly to the iMac's port, does it appear in the sidebar?

  • External Hard drives not showing up in FCPX library

    Hello everyone,
    I have FCPX 10.1.3 with Yosemite 10.10.
My external Hard drives mount fine on the finder, but they are not showing up in my FCP Libraries.
Also when I want to import footage from my Canon Camera to my ext HD, FCPX won't let me and only lists Macintosh HD. Weird because FCPX sees the Hard drives as media to import FROM, not TO.
I'm puzzled. Anybody knows why and possibly a fix?
    Thank you!
    Raphael

Hi Tom, Thanks for your prompt reply. The ext. HD that I am using already has 2 folders called "Final Cut Events" and "Final Cut Projects" because I use this drive on another Mac.
I upgraded to Yosemite and consequently my version of FCPX. I use FCPX on a daily basis and I don't understand why FCPX 10.1.3 doesn't recognize a ext HD that already has those 2 folders.
Are you recommending that Open an new Library? Or create a new one?

  • External drive shows in finder as a CD & no longer shows as "Journaled", after accidental unplug

I accidentally unplugged two external drives while using them.  (I know, I know! Tugging on the wrong wire at the wrong moment...)
    The result:
One large external hard drive now shows up in finder as a CD (i.e., shows on desktop as a mounted CD not as a hard drive).
The same external drive no longer shows formatted as "Journaled" in Disk Utility.
(The second external drive still shows up as an external hard drive on the desktop, and still shows up as Journaled in Disk Utility.)
    Questions:
Is the damage to the external drive itself (so that finder thinks it is a CD, and is not Journaled), or to some information on the Mac?
Can this be safely repaired in some way, or must I reformat the external drive and restore its content form a backup (yes, I have one!, but it will take a long time to do.)
    Thanks!

Once I got hold of my offsite backup I could boot from that, and discovered that the external drive showed as fine, i.e. passed disk utility, showed as journaled, etc., and looked normal, while it was Macintosh HD which had numerous errors beyond the ability of Disk Utility to correct.  Restoring Macintosh HD from backup has fixed everything.  Odd thing, the way running Disk Utility from the damaged partition showed such anomalous results for the external drive.
    Thanks for your help!

  • My WD external hard drive will no longer show up on my Macbook pro.

My WD external hard drive will not longer show up on my macbook pro.  The light turns on and you can hear it running but it won't show up either in finder or in the disk utility.  This happened a while ago but I really want to get all my photos off the hard drive.  Is there anything I can do to get my computer to read it again or get my data off of it?
I don't have access to another Mac to test it.
    Thank you

My external hard drive is no longer showing up on the desk top, it wont even work when I plug it into my media player anymore, help?

Go to Finder > Preferences > General > and in the top section where it says external disks check that the box is ticked.   If it is check the connections.

  • Holding down the option key when booting my iMac lo longer shows me my bootable external drives, the system just boots up to the main system. Also, holding down command, option,P,R no longer zaps the p-ram. the system just boots up.

Holding down the option key when booting my iMac lo longer shows me my bootable external drives, the system just boots up to the main system. Also, holding down command, option,P,R no longer zaps the p-ram. the system just boots up normally. Why do these key fonctions no longer work?

It could be your timing if on a bluetooth keyboard.  I find it best to hit the keys as soon as i hear the chime, release and hit them again but this time holding them before the chime ends....like a fake pump in football.
But....you can always open up system preferences, startup disk, and select your bootable clone for booting.  If it doesn't show up there, the Mac doesn't think it's bootable.

  • External hard drive no longer shows up connected

I have been using a Seagate Freeagent 500 GB external HD as a backup storage device for my Windows 7, 64 bit computer. After working well for several years it did not respond the last time I tried to back up and shows up as "disconnected" when
I search for the HD in device manager or control panel.  It was assigned Drive I but that drive no longer shows up under drives.  I have tried different USB ports without success. Oddly, the audible signal sounds when I remove the USB cable from
a port but does not sound when I reinsert it.  I also tried powering down the hard drive and powering up again without success.

    Hi,
If other PCs can show this external hard drive, You can try the following steps to clear the write-protected flag to see what's going on:
Open a command with administrator privilege:
    type--> diskpart
    type--> list volume
    type--> select volume #
    type--> attributes disk clear readonly

  • External Hard Drive no longer showing in Devices

My external hard drive no longer shows up as a device on my MBP. It has worked fine since the day I plugged it in.
The Time Machine is using the HD, and continues to do it's backups, so power and USB connection is not an issue
The HD shows up in Disk Utility (The Time Machine portion AND the partition that I've been using for storage)
I ran a repair on the partition in Disk Utility and it checks out OK
I can access this partition from VMware Fusion, so the windows side of the MBP sees it, and it's operational
Used the HD all day yesterday without issue
I've restarted the MBP to see if it would find the HD partition after a restart, it doesn't
I've unplugged (USB) and powered-off the HD, and when I power-on, it still isn't seen.
    Any ideas?
    John

If TM is turned on and it still doesn't show up then do a SMC reset.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • IPhoto '8, Some photos from Original Folder no longer showing

    Hello All:
I am working on my sisters' iMac and she has the following problem with iPhoto. Somehow (we have deduced that her husband tried to help "clean-up" the computer), there are 7 months worth of pictures no longer showing in iPhoto.  Here is what I have found:
She has her current iPhoto library in the users\username\Pictures\iPhotoLibrary on the local hard drive.
Sometime on Nov 4th, there was another iPhoto Library created or saved to an external hard drive, this has the same directory as above.
The "Originals" folder from the local drive is missing 30 folders that are present on the external drive copy of the library.
I copied the missing folders back to the local drive and put them in the Originals folder.
When we open iPhoto, those photos are still not appearing.
We have used the Command + Option when opening iPhoto in order to run the rebuild on the database as well as repair thumbnails.
Still, not all the photos in the Originals folder will show in iPhoto.
We have tried to drag those missing photos directly into iPhoto while it was open and received the error that it could not import because they were already present.
How can I get all Originals to show? Any and all help is appreciated!
I have looked at the time machine and the structure of the iPhoto Library is the same (missing folders) - so I do not think that I can restore. Could the external drive have been where the last 7 months of photos have been stored? Can it be possible to load more than 1 library in iPhoto?
    Thank you for any help!
    KLB

These libraries are corrupted and you need to start over with one or other of them.
I copied the missing folders back to the local drive and put them in the Originals folder.
Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things,, deleting them or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
    Also, it doesn't work.
We have tried to drag those missing photos directly into iPhoto while it was open and received the error that it could not import because they were already present.
Iphoto will not import files from the current iPhoto Library - a sensible precaution against duplicates.
I think your best bet is to pick the most complete library you have and then import the missing files to it.
Otherwise you're starting over from scratch.

  • Iomega external HD no longer mounting, disk utility fails to resolve issue.

I have an Iomega external HD (1TB) that's been working faithfully for two years as my time machine backup. I have Mac OS X 10.6.8. This morning, the HD was no longer showing up on my desktop. I have tried to mount the HD through disk utility and it states it is unable to mount the drive. A screenshot of what I see on disk utility is below. The drive still lights up, sounds like it is running and the drive is active. I have also done the following:
    1. verfied drive; states it needs repairs. When repairs attempted, utility goes on, and on, and on with no progress and I have to force quit.
    2. Have reset the PRAM and nothing changes.
    3. Have started mac in safe mode, still not recognized and same error messages given in disk utility.
    4. Other external HD works fine on mac, have not had any software changes/updates since yesterday that I know of that would affect anything.
    5. USB and Firewire ports all functioning correctly and the drive is recognized on those under system profiler.
    5. I have attached the problem HD to my Windows XP laptop (an old one but still works) and the drive is recognized under device manager but does not show on the desktop (formatted for mac though, so not too surprising).
Would appreciate anyone's advice on this one, have hit a wall.

Turn off Time Machine, select the 1TB ST310005 Media Drive instead of the Time Machine partition and see if it will Repair.
If that doesn't work, you might Erase / Repair / Format and start over providing that there is nothing critical on the Time Machine backup that you can't live without.

  • IPhone no longer shows up as a hard disk for photo transfer

When I used to plug in my iPhone it would show up in the My Computer page as an external disk. If I clicked through the folders I could easily move pics from my phone to the computer. I had already shut off the auto open feature of the program select.
Not sure why my iPhone no longer shows up. It shows up fine with iTunes

    Greetings,
The iPhone won't work as an external disk, never has, by default. It will show up in iTunes, it is supposed to there, but not on your desktop.
Are you thinking of an iPod Touch, maybe? Maybe you have a phone that was tampered with, maybe?
There are third party apps that might do what you are talking about.
    Cheers,
    M.

  • Vaults No Longer Show Up in Aperture

I opened Aperture today and my two rotating backup vaults (on two external HDs) do not show up in the "Show Vaults" pane.
Each of these HD Vaults is almost 2TB of Aperture files, so I could wipe the drives and do a fresh backup, but that would probably take about two days running constantly in the background.
Any idea how to get Aperture to recognize my two existing backup vaults??
    Thanks for any help.

You're positive the vaults that do show up are indeed the older vaults you are no longer using?  If that is the case then the only other option to try and get the vaults back would be a rebuild.
Before you do that I'd be interested in having you look inside the library at the vaults settings. If you select the library in the Finder and right click it select Show Package Contents, this will display the library in the finder window. In the list of files and folders is one called Database open that folder. Inside it is one called Vaults. Open that. How many files are in the Vaults folder?
Of course at this point you might just be better off creating a new vault, the choice is yours. It's hard to advocate for one action (doing a rebuild) or the other (just making a new vault).
    good luck
    regards

  • External Drive No Longer Visible

My external drive is no longer showing up either in the finder, on the desktop or if I click the computer name under the devices tab on the sidebar. The only way to access this drive at all is to open up disk utilities, select the drive, right click the drive and choose Open "XXXX". If I choose Reveal "XXXX" in Finder it opens to the Volumes area and that drive is not visible.(see screenshot) The finder preferences have external drives set to show up in the sidebar and on the desktop.
I can access folders and files on the drive if I place a shortcut for that file/folder on the desktop. But even when using this method the drive shows up in the sidebar but is grayed out. (see screen capture below)
This drive is shared via Mountain Lion Server and shows up fine for systems connecting to it via the network.
I recently manually changed the permissions of this volume and propagated them via the server utility (we were having permissions issues with certain folders and files for server users). After that I ran a couple of updates to the computer. I suspect one of these was the culprit, although that could be just a coincidence.
We have a bit for bit copy of this drive (SuperDuper) that is on an internal drive in this computer and it shows up fine.
Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am going to try trashing the p-list file, but as this is an actively used server I can't take it down for any length of time during working hours.
    Facts:
Mac Pro 5,1 Quad Core Xeon
    OS 10.82
The Drive is a 13TB Promise V-Track RAID connected via Fibre Channel
Drive shows up as Mounted in Disk Utility
External Drives are set to be visible in Finder & Sidebar Preferences

    Update:
Ran ANOTHER server update from the APP store. Then rebooted. Nothing changed.
Found another thread that suggested deleted you com.apple.finder.plist and rebooting so I gave that a try.  Now NONE of my drives are showing up in the finder other than the drive the OS lives on.
Same behavior and I can still access the drives via Disk Utility using "Open XXX " command.
For now I have created Aliases to both so I can at least get to them via the desktop.

    Please
