My external HD refuses to be erased !!!

My Lacie external hd refuses to be erased.
I have tried ALL of the options in Disk utility - also partitioning,
but all i get is " Unknown error: -20 "
Erasing with the " 8Way random write format" seems to work; but it will LITERALLY take almost a whole week!
Really needs help with this one !
(see also my topic "ERASING REGRET" in this discussion)

I'm relieved to see I'm not the only person having trouble with Lacie's drive. I just bought one, and it is very temperamental. At first, I could not get it recognized at all, so I followed a suggestion on LaCie's website, and disconnected everything, power and all, for 15 minutes. I then partitioned the drive under Tiger. It appears to get temperamental if any other device is connected to Firewire. It would not allow me to write to it or eject it if my iSight were connected, and when I tried daisy chaining my OWC hard drive, it allowed me to copy 3GB of material and then stopped. It now gives an error message saying the file names are too long. When I try to eject it, it says it's in use. The only solution seems to be to turn everything off and restart with only the LaCie drive connected.

  • Internal HD (aluminium PWB) refuses to be erased.

Erasing the original internal HD on a aluminium PWB does not work.
I friend of mine had a big crash on a aluminium PWB and was no longer able to access the machine. It would get as far as initializing network and than we would get the awful grey restart screen in the many languages.
Thanks to the discipline off backing up no serious data loss occurred and I was also able to access the computer in T mode to safe anything that was not backed up.
I also tried with several tools to get the disk to work again but to no avail.
I decided to erase the disk completely before installing any new software for them (they are pretty illiterate in computer terms). This is where the problem begins. The disk refuses to be erased. Not with Disk Utilities or with TechTool Pro v4. It simply claims to have erased the disk in a few seconds (100 GB).
After several attempts to zero data or erase the HD I gave up and installed the system software from the original CD. This worked but the machine is temperamental and unstable and as I ad more programmes it gets only worse.
    Any suggestions? Any ideas?
    Thanks

    G4 pwb   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Try this:
1a (If this is the startup drive.) Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu if using Tiger.) Be sure to use the installer disk for the version of OS X you intend to install.
1b (If this is a non-startup volume or external drive.) Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.

To move a home folder, create a new home folder, copy the contents of the old home folder into the new home folder, and then delete the old home folder.  Take a look at this link, http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/UserMgmt_v10.6.pdf

Running Time Machine for the first time, how that I make sure that some information I have in the external drive does not get erase in the prosess

    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Note: This is now your Library. It's not a Back Up, and you need another disk for backing up.

  • External hard drive won't erase and now is not recognized

My 1 TB WD external hard drive was partitioned into 2 partitions. The top partition was for Time Machine, the bottom for my personal files. Those personal files are not on my regular hard drive so I decided I needed to get another external hard drive to back them up. I bought a 2 TB WB and set up Time Machine with that drive to back up my computers hard drive as well as my 1 TB external hard drive. Through my online research I discovered I couldn't make the 1 TB into one partion without deleting my personal files, so I figured since it was backed up on the 2 TB it would be okay. Just to be safe I backed it up onto a 500 GB Seagate as well (this drive crashed a while ago and then randomly started working again, so not too trustworthy - if anyone knows how I can make it trustworthy again, that would be fantastic). Then I partioned the 1 TB into 1 partition. Success. I went to erase it and selected Zero Out Data. This failed "Volume Erase failed with the error: Disk object invalid or inable to serialize." And then my hard drive disappeared. I've been able to open it in Disk Utility and partion it again into 1 partition, but each time I try to erase it, it always fails. Is something wrong with my drive? Is this external hard drive truthworthy to hold important files without crashing again?
Here's a screenshot of what happens when it fails. Yay.
After the Zeroing out doesn't work, this box pops up. And then my drive disappears from the desktop.
At one point the partition failed, but it seems to have gotten over that. Although each time I try to erase and it fails, I have to rename and repartition my 1 TB external hard drive so it shows up on the desktop again.

I came back from uni and it looks like the writing zero's was effective. There were no "failure" boxes. And here's the final reading for the partition and then the whole drive. Does anyone know why it says 12 folders and 66 files (more filed than when it started writing)? Does this mean it's not zero-ed out? Can I use this external hard drive?

  • External Hard Drive won't erase. What can i do?

    Hey everyone,
The external hard drive i used as a Time Machine for my macbook stopped being recognised but it shows up on Disk Utility. I've already tried to erase it to reformat it but I keep getting an error saying that the disk couldn't be unmounted.
Does anyone know what i can do to make it work again?
    Thanks!
    Extra:
I've already tried repairing it but Disk Utility simply said it can't repair the disk.

Is Time Machine still trying to use it? Try turning off Time Machine and then try to format it.
Another option might be to try to format it while booting into the Recovery partition. That should sever any ties the OS has with the drive.
If those option fail, I would assume the disk is bad.

  • External drive refuse to show up in network

    I have just bought a Verbatim 3TB external harddrive (http://www.verbatim-europe.co.uk/en_1/product_store-n-save-superspeed-usb-3-0-de sktop-hard-drive-3tb_9566_0_35770__12692.html?con=39)
It works fine plugged directly into my retina laptop but refuse to show up when plugged into my (brand new) airport extreme. I have other externals that works perfectly with the extreme and I tried to the best of my ability to format the verbatim with the same standard (GUID and Mac OS Extended).
How can this be? Are some brands of external drives just incompatible with the airport extreme?

  • Hello! I am new to the MacWorld and I love I tunes! but I have bought TV shows and now I am running short of storage, Can I transfer my TV shows to an external drive, or if I erase them can I download them again since I paid for them?

    Hello!
I am nes to Mac computers and I love ITunes. I have bought some TV shows and I am running short of storage and I have some questions.
    1) Can I transfer my TV shows to an external drive?
    2) If I erase these files, can I download them again? I bought a movie I erase it to make space, but I went to the Itunes store again and it says I have to pay for it.
    3) Can use ICloud to store my TV shows? and how is it done if possible?
    Thank you so much!!
    CB

You can move the files to an external drive.  Delete the entry from your collection but don't let iTunes delete the file.  Copy the file to the external, then drag to iTunes to add it again.  Hold down the option key while doing this so the file doesn't get copied to the internal again.
Alternatively use: Dougscripts: Relocates selected files to a folder of your choice - http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=relocateselected - replaces "Move Files To Folder"  to move files.
    2) I wouldn't trust Apple or the media companies.  They could decide tomorrow to not allow a second download and you'd be stuck.  The media company could decide to pull an item from iTunes Store.  You are the only person who can be relied upon to ensure you always have access to your media copies.

  • HT201250 Do you need to use a new external hard drive or an erased one to back up once you upgrade to OSX Lion?  My time capsule fails ever since I upgraded the new program to my old mac.

I have not been able to back up in Time capsule since I upgraded my mac to MAC OSX Lion 10.7.5.
Do I need a new external drive or an erased drive to get it to work with the lion software?

Either new or an erased drive is fine, as long as it is formated Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
By the way: I find that Carbon Copy Cloner is a much simpler and efficient "clone"(backup) solution, especially if you're using an external drive.

  • Iphoto external hard drive transfer to erased macbook pro does not look like my orgirinal

While on an Apple Care phone call, the tech had me erase my hard drive when logging me in as a test user did not fix the problem.
Mountain Lion is reinstalled but when I transferred my iPhoto Library from the external hard drive to my laptop, rather than putting in the 297 events & 11,292 photos that were on it, it put on some 48,000 photos and very few of my events are still original. Some photos show up 4 times, some randomly, some together.
It also has done strange cropping things with other photos, part of a face or objects shows up as if it had been cropped, it is a self-induced cropping. Very strange indeed. Information under the photos show lots of different letters and numbers that are foreign.
So, should I return to the Apple store? This is the second logic that has been put in in the month of December. One on December 12, picked it up on the 18th and it failed. Returned it and another logice board was put in. Is this a software problem, they re-installed Mountain Lion on December 30th.
Any help would be most appreciated. Hoping to not have to make another trip to Apple. Thanks.

I imported all info from the external hard drive to the new MacBook Pro. Seems most all data transferred ok.
Exactly what did you do? With iPhoto there is no "importing" involved - you simply drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the pictures folder of the new machine and launch iPhoto letting it convert as needed
With the following exception with iPhoto application,
You would do nothing with the iPhoto application - you use the new iPhoto application installed on yoru new system - you only move the iPhoto library as noted above
You can try Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library

  • External HD refuses to eject ~ no obvious apps/processes preventing it??

One of my external hard drives simply refuses to eject/un-mount, and I've done everything I can think of to terminate any processes and/or applications that may be using the drive and preventing it from being ejected properly, but I haven't had any success...
Is there some Mac-Jedi way of going about isolating what might be preventing this drive from ejecting properly? I've scoured the activity monitor but can't figure out what might be preventing the drive from ejecting??
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

yes, there is! Let me just get might light saber
enter the following with command in terminal
    sudo lsof /Volumes/"drive name"
instead of the "drive name" in the above put the name of the external. KEEP the quotes. You'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see). that's normal.
The command will output any processes accessing the drive.

  • Phantom File from Seagate external drive refuses to be deleted

    Good evening!
Purchased This guy: Seagate - Backup Plus 4TB External USB 3.0/2.0 Hard Drive to transfer files from multiple smaller portable drives onto one drive. Wide variety of files; music, audiobooks, movies, photos, work files (CS Suite, fonts), etc.
Copied my "MUSIC_COLLECTION" folder over from this guy: Seagate FreeAgent Go 320 GB 2.5" External Hard Drive - USB 2.0 to the new drive seemingly without incident. Accidentally began copying it a second time into a sub-folder on the new drive, stopped the duplicate transfer, dragged the dupe to the trash and there it lives now as a grayed out item that can't be deleted. When I try to delete it, I get "You have run out of application memory" errors and have to relaunch the finder at best, restart the computer at worst.
I'm on a MacBook Pro, recently updated to Mavericks (OS X 10.9 / 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7 / 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3). Runs happily so long as that new drive isn't connected. But I run into the application memory errors when it is even if all I've got open is one Chrome window and MS Outlook.
I found a Macworld article with instructions to force delete in Terminal. It didn't delete the directory. This is the message I received: rm: /Volumes/kodama/.Trashes/501/MUSIC_COLLECTION: Input/output error
Any thoughts on how I can delete the MUSIC_COLLECTION ghost?
Thanks for any suggestions that may help and Happy Holidays to those who celebrate.
    Best,
    H.

This got a few views so I thought I'd post the solution I was given in case anyone else runs into similar issues. I went to the genius bar at my local Apple store and they pointed out that I hadn't formatted the new seagate drive properly--it was still formatted for Windows. So I copied everything back over to the assorted drives, reformatted the new seagate for mac, and it's been fine since.

  • External speakers refuse to play the start chime :-(

Hello everybody. Here is my very silly problem :
I have connected external speakers to my brand new iMac Intel. All sounds coming from the computer are perfectly transfered to the external speakers, should they come from the system or any application, except only one sound/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png This only one sound that is not played through the external speakers is the iMac start chime It is only played through the internal speakers.
I checked all volumes possible and "sound out" choices in the system preferences, but in vain
Could anyone be able to help me ? Thanks in advance.

It's because the Mac's design considers the internal speakers and external speakers to be different, with different settings; more of the attention-to-detail. Most PCs would simply have a hardware switch to cut off the internal speakers when something is plugged into the audio port, and push the sound to the external speakers, with no change in volume settings. Macs keep separate volume settings for the two outputs.
A lot of people don't want to hear the startup BONG (for whatever reason) when they restart. If they set the internal speaker volume to zero, there is no startup sound, but their external speaker volume is not affected once the Mac starts up. It also makes the startup sound the same consistent pleasant volume (if you DO want to hear it) no matter how high or low the external speaker volume is last set before you shut down.
So what you consider a "pity" is actually an advantage and a useful feature.

  • External drive refuses to work and the other is very slow

I was not sure if I should put this in Lion or macbook pro section since thats what I am trying on (mid 2010) version.
    Hi,
I purchased maybe 4-6 months ago a Toshiba E05A100SBU3EW_C STOR.E ART 4 1TB USB 3.0 2.5 inch Hard Drive - Black from amazon and one day it just suddenly stopped working and I was wondering if any one knew how to get it working again on my mac or windows machine, please as it has a lot of important data
it is this hard drive: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004NE76KQ/ref=oh_o01_s00_i00_details
it makes no sounds or noises on my mac but when I plug it into my windows machine it does make a noise but then there is nothing in my computer and it will not recognise the device at all

warranty is valid but I really hope I can save the files
I am getting a message from my macbook pro saying that its disconnecting it due to too much power or not enough, why would it say this and how can I re enable the drive?
Also I have a second DW or is it WD I forget but it works but its just runing 10 times slower then normal and I cant figure out why as I never touched them they just one day started acting this way after I had my macs scren replaced one of the ports is 3.0..
do you think the guy could of swapped out the usb t a 2.0 one? but then why would my mac keep telling me that its ejecting the drive

Have you tried updating your software? The issue with the keys will either be a software issue or an issue with your hardware, if you're on the newest software try re-installing it. It's very simple to do using the desktop software, if this does not work it seems to be a hardware issue, meaning repair or replacement is needed.
Also, updating/re-installing your software should also resolve any slow/freezing issues and hopefully stop your dialling problem.
    Hope this helps

I have a Free Agent Pro that I was using on my Vista PC, formatted in NTFS.
I removed all the files from it, and plugged it into my Imac to format it.
Apparently I don't have PERMISSION to do that. Disk Utility won't let me, it grays out the buttons for permission under 'first aid'.
Is there some force command in Mac (newbie here) to force a disk to get formatted?
