  • Seagate Backup Plus Slim External USB 3 Hard Drive Not Working with Mac Pro

Hi, I have just purchased a brand new Mac Pro.  I have three 2 TB Seagate Backup Plus Slim External USB 3 hard drives that just don't jive with the new Mac Pro's.  When the drive is connected, I cannot access the drive, read/write or even format.  Finder completely locks up and the drive cannot even be force ejected. When I try to format, Disk Utility either spits out an error that the drive cannot be read, or simply locks up.  This happens regardless of the OS on the Mac Pro.  I am currently running 10.10.2
I have ruled out an issues with the drives, as I have tested all of them on a variety of systems and OS's, including Power Mac, Mac Book Pro, PC, OS 10.7, 10.8, 10.9 as well as on Windows.  I have tried formatting in every file system including Mac OS Extended, Mac OS Extended (Journaled), NTFS and exFAT.  ALL other systems have no issues with the drives. Apple has replaced my Mac Pro with a brand new one and the drives still behave the same way.  Furthermore, I have tested the drives on three other Mac Pro's at work and they all reject the drives. So, on their own, there is nothing wrong with the Mac Pro, or the drives. However, the configuration of them together is wreaking havoc.
I have contacted Seagate, and this was their response:
The most recent version of the Backup Plus drives use the USB Attached SCSI (UAS) standard to increase transfer rates.  It's possible that the drivers being used currently on your Mac Pro are having issues using this feature with the standard USB 3.0 drivers installed.  I would recommend contacting Apple to check for any driver updates or see if they any suggestions for issues involving drives using UAS.
I have also started a case with Apple Support (Case # 755934373) and am waiting to hear back regarding Seagate's response.  I've spent DAYS trying to troubleshoot this and am now at a complete loss.  If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears (or eyes in this case).
    Thanks!

    Hi danielsh6,
I recently bought the new Lacie Thunderbolt 2 D2 3TB and I had the same problem as you, i have a macbook pro early 2011, those support thunderbolt but many times there is a bug that doesn't let you connect any thunderbolt drives to your computer. The solution I found was installing this update:
    Thunderbolt Firmware Update v1.0
Before doing this I would recommend you updating to mountain lion (not yosemite yet as there is still some glitches and more on preview's macbook pro's).
    Hope this helped!

  • Where can I get the driver for my HP DE8A4L external USB CD/DVD drive?

Where can I get the driver for my HP DE8A4L external USB CD/DVD drive?
On the label it says, Model HSTNN-PD06-91
    and
    HP PN: 518819-001 Rev.B
I've had my Mini 110-1000 running our music system for a couple of years, no complaints.  When I wanted a CD/DVD drive, I purchased a DE8A4L external USB drive directly from HP.  It didn't come with a driver disc.  When I plug it in, the USB subsystem does not enable it.  Device Manager shows a yellow exclamation point, saying, "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware..."   It is running Windows XP Home Edition SP3.
    What gives with this device?

Following up on tactic 2) above, I upgraded the BIOS from version F07 to the latest version available on the HP download site, version F19.  This went well, but unfortunately the system still does not recognize the device.
When I try to Device Manager, and select the DE8A4L DVD device, and try "search for a device driver", it says it cannot find a better match for the driver already installed.
This Mini 110-1000 only came with 1 Gb RAM, and Windows XP Home.   Is one of these a critical limitation for running an external USB DVD drive?

  • Dvd drive not worked properly

    tcrite,
Sounds like a bad drive...I would get a replacement. According to Accelerate Your Mac database, it should work without issue.
Just enter the model number of the drive and select your Powerbook G3 2000, and you will see four reports on this model.

  • External DVD drive not working with Lombard G3 333

I have an external DVD drive that worked when I had 10.4, but had to reformat HD and now only have 10.3.9, and now the DVD drive does not work with DVDs, it will work with CDs and CDR media, but not with DVD media. My Lombard did not come with DVD originally and I am using a PC Card (Macintosh PowerBook DVD-Video PC Card For PowerBook G3 Series) and it worked before with 10.4, but not with 10.3, any ideas? Also have tried with 9.x, no go either. Any help would be appreciated.
Also, would it be difficult to add a DVD logic board to my Lombard?
    Joey

    xamdu,
I am reading and replying to this post after first replying to your other post, so a few of my previous comments are redundant.
Regarding the FireWire(?) USB 2.0(?) DVD drive: It is possible Tiger supported your DVD drive but Panther does not. I would give PatchBurn for Panther a try:
    http://patchburn.de/download.html
If the above is unsuccessful, take a look at this workaround:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20040330171655882
You can swap logic boards but it does require a lot of disassembly.
Since no version of OSX supports Apple DVD Player, I am assuming you have a third-party player like VLC installed to watch movies. If this is the case, the DVD Decoder PC card is not necessary. If booted to 9.x, you of course will need the decoder PC card but I did not know 9.x's Apple DVD Player supported external drives.

  • [Solved] External USB 3.0 drive not seen under /dev/sd*

Ok, thought this would be easy but for some reason I cant get arch to see the physical drive. Its a new Seagate 2TB external USB 3.0 drive. I connected it to a windows laptop and it was quickly recognized (ntfs). I then installed ntfs-3g but still cant see it. I then formatted it under windows as ext4, but its still not seen. I tried this with 2 arch PC's, both the same issue. I seen a few other posts and tried a few things like making sure the mod xhci_hcd was running. I have the latest updates on each system. fdisk -l does not show the device at all! I can see and boot to other USB devices fine just not this one, maybe since its USB3.0??
I noticed here, they talk about maybe USB3 is broke in the new kernels, after 3.10.2 maybe?
    Similar issue: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=126299
    Possible bug: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/36296
However, I would think that by now, this would have been fixed as USB3.0 is more common? Other than trying to find a OLD 3.10.2 kernel any other advice?

Awesome, THANKS!! Yes I got it to work following this and specifically Da_Coynul's post:
I was able to get my external drive working again by telling the usb-storage module to ignore uas for the device. Here is how to do it:
First, create a file named ignore_uas.conf in the /etc/modprobe.d directory containing the following*:
    options usb-storage quirks=Vendor_ID:Product_ID:u
*(substitute your actual Vendor_ID and Product_ID obtained from the lsusb -v command).
    Next, regenerate your inital ramdisk:
    # mkinitcpio -p linux
    Finally, reboot your computer.
Although this is not a solution to broken uas, at least it will let you use your drive as before hmm

Thanks everyone...Now I can see the drive, and will work on formatting it with XFS...

  • External DVD drive not working

Need some help with this one:
    My sister-in-law has an iMac G4 1.25Ghz 17” LCD USB 2.0 with 10.4.11.
The internal DVD-ROM CD-RW died awhile back so she purchased a Sony external DVD-ROM CD-RW USB 2.0 to take its place.
    Everything was working fine.
Recently, she had some bad sectors on her HD (5 yrs old anyhow), so I purchased her a new HD, installed it and while I had the case open, I removed the broken internal DVD-ROM CD-RW. Installed a fresh 10.4.11
System profiler can see the USB Sony DVD-ROM CD-RW, but when a disk is installed, or when I open Apple DVD player, it says a disk drive cannot be found.
The DVD can be seen on the desktop.
System prefs is configured to open Apple DVD player when a DVD is inserted.
I hooked the new Sony drive to my setup (iMac G5 2.0) and the drive works fine when I put in a DVD.
Would removing the old broken DVD-ROM drive from the G4 cause the new external USB Sony not to work??
Any suggestion? I checked Sony’s site and there is no d/l’s for the drive.
    Thanks,
    --Bob Aldridge
    Huntsville, AL

    Hey Bob,
My understanding of this is that when you install the OS there is like a "shake hands" with the DVD-ROM chip on the internal ATA bus by the installer. The installer then installs/enables the necessary components to play DVDs.
Would removing the old broken DVD-ROM drive from the G4 cause the new external USB Sony not to work??
If you remove that drive that's probably why you get the:
"An installed DVD player cannot be found" error.
I did not re-apply any thermal compound on the heat pipes. Is the compound something I can get a Radio Shack?
Here's the exact procedure from the 1.25 Service Manual:
"This procedure requires the following tools:
    • Plastic stylus or plastic spatula to remove the old thermal paste
    • Plastic stylus or plastic spatula to spread the thermal paste
    • Thermal paste (922-4757)
    Part Location
    1. Thoroughly clean the original thermal film from the mating surfaces (circled below) of
the bottom housing and thermal pipe. Use a plastic stylus to scrape the surfaces
clean. Note: Do not use an abrasive material or liquid cleaner.
    2. Squeeze a ball of thermal paste onto the mating surfaces of the thermal pipe.
    3. Replace the bottom housing.
Warning: The bottom housing has four torx screws that must be tightened to at least
17 in.-lbs. Use a torque driver (service tool 076-0899) to ensure that the thermal pipe
is firmly mated with the top base. If you do not have a torque driver, you must make
sure the screws are tightened by hand FIRMLY, BUT NOT FORCIBLY.
Failure to apply the thermal paste as described in this procedure, and failure to
tighten the torx screws as directed, could cause the computer to overheat and
    damage internal components."
I personally haven't had a 1.25 apart. The 700s and 800s I've had apart have a silicone pad like material or thick rubber compond on the heat pipes. The manuals for those machines refer to "thermal pads".
I think you could use a thermal pad material like from Micro Center, Comp USA or Radio Shack.
This is the Radio Shack stuff:
    http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2295074&cp=&sr=1&kw=therma lpad&origkw=thermalpad&parentPage=search
If the thermal stuff was not too badly damaged you'll probably be OK but I'd probably run Temperature Monitor for a while just to make sure.

  • External DVD Drive not working with osx 10.8.5

Hi, I'm having issues with my MacBook Pro 15" 9,1 working with an external DVD drive.  I am running OSX 10.8.5 and have been troubleshooting this issue for a few weeks.  The optical drive itself is the original drive that came with the computer, but I have put it in an external enclosure to free up space inside the body of the MacBook Pro.  The drive seems to function fine with CDs (playing and ripping - haven't tried burning yet) but is extremely inconsistent/barely functional with DVD playback.  Only one DVD in my collection properly works - others bring up error messages in multiple programs (VLC, Wondershare, the native DVD application, etc.) and another continuously loops back to the main menu each time "Play Feature" is selected.  These are a variety of DVDs that range from obscure to commercial and old to new (the oldest and most obscure is the only one that works).  After deciding that it is not the programs, I replaced the enclosure.  I still had the same exact issues.  I reset PRAM - no solution there.  I created a new user on my computer, installed the same media players and had the same luck.  I then used the same external drive on my old MacBook Pro 15" (5,4 running OSX 10.6.8) to see if it would work there.  It worked perfectly (with the native DVD application).  What is going on here and how can I get my new computer to recognize the external DVDs reliably and consistently?

older superdrives were Hitachi mfg, new ones are Panasonic.  Since yours is new and panasonic, indications are it wont work thru the enclosure on your NEW macbook, rather as you state on your older Mac.
until you said it worked fine on the old machine, the logical conclusion is a dirty lens on the laser since it reads CDs fine but most DVD not, since the track is much smaller.
Considering a new superdrive is only $48 on ebay ,or $78 for a new superdrive, your frustration might be too much, and just grab a new superdrive.
Your detailed information indicates a firmware incompatibility of the panasonic superdrive thru an enclosure
This is the new superdrive, made by panasonic as you have in your enclosure:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/221280580133?lpid=82
of course thats a lot of trouble buying that AND an enclosure, easier still is just getting a Mac superdrive inside its working enclosure designed for use as such:

  • Iomega eGo 2TB USB/Firewire 800 drive not working with Time Machine.

The drive I had for Time Machine died and I replaced it with an iomega eGo 2 TB USB/Firewire 800 drive. Time Machine finds it and backs up the disk when I first boot up but then it seems like the drive goes off line. At that point, when Time Machine tires to back up it can't get the drive to respond and my system hangs. To fix that, I turn off the iomega that fixes the hang up and I get the disconnect without ejecting warning.
I ran disk utility and disk warrior. Both apps reported the disk is fine.
Can any tell me what's up? I'm running OS X 10.7.2
    Thanks.

I am having this exact same error with my new iMac 21.5" connected to a brand new Iomega eGo 2 TB Desktop Firewire 800 External Hard Drive (Mac Edition - 34796).
The TimeMachine backup works fine, but as soon as the iMac goes to sleep and wakes back up, TimeMachine doesn't respond well to any commands and all sorts of errors appear on the screen.
I will try the tip here from Kappy and report back later if this works for me.
Kappy, one thing to note is that I'm using the Firewire connection from the iMac to the eGo and experiencing this problem.  The eGo has its own power supply too.

  • HP Pavillion dv6647cl - CD/DVD drive not working

My DVD/CD drive isn't working. I was in the process of reinstalling my OS through the Windows Vista recovery discs(Which I did a few times before) and now all of the sudden, the BIOS isn't recognizing the drive. Because of that I was forced to use a Live USB of Linux to see what was causing it and sure enough the CD/DVD drive did NOT appear in Linux. I set the CD/DVD drive to be first to be booted in BIOS and it still doesn't show it. I press F9 for boot options and it does not include the CD/DVD drive. USB and Hard Drive are deteced but now for some reason it does not detect the CD/DVD drive

Try removing and reseating the drive. If that does not help I am afraid it is dead and needs to be replaced.

  • Dvd drive not working after upgrade to osx10.9

Since my Macbook upgraded to 10.9 the DVD drive no longer works.
Putting in either a pre-recorded disc or a blank to burn results in the disc being ejected after spinning for a few seconds.
The SD card reader also stopped working but I was able to correct that problem.

Same problem here on a mid-2010 21.5" iMac. Will read CDs and 1 out of 100 DVDs (1 kids' DVD, weird) but generally nothing in DVD format.
I tried all the solves listed (change prefs, reset EMC and both PRAMs, boot from internet disks, even an Endust cleaning CD). Nada. I then set up a Joint Venture call and they diagnosed the drive as faulty after repeating all of the above. They say it's very possible that dying Superdrives can read CDs and even burn disks but not read DVDs. They said it'd be about $150 to replace the drive at a Genius Bar.
Here's where I try to be helpful.
If you're found this thread and you're not under warranty, don't waste ANY time testing it or trying to fix. Certainly don't roll back to previous software versions -- wasting hours of time and eliminating software features you may like or introducing incompatibilities. Just hop on over to Amazon and buy a $30 (not kidding) Amazon Basics external DVD drive. I ordered one w/ my cleaning disk knowing I'd prob need it and prob wouldn't want to pay Apple to fix my 3-year old machine. Works like an absolute charm for me. Faster ripping CDs than the Superdrive, plays DVDs through DVD Player, VLC, or XBMC instantly.
So my advice (ignore it if you like, it's worth what you paid for it) is to ignore any conspiracy theories about whether Apple planned this. IMHO, it doesn't matter for $30. Your time is worth more than $30. Just buy an external and get on with your life. You can even use it with your drive-less Air when you get one, if you don't have one already. How often can you solve a complex computer problem instantly, and be better off in the end, for $30? Just do it. End of advice.
    HTH.

    Hello,
I strongly suspect that you need to change 'ide' to 'pata' in your /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
#HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide scsi sata usb keymap filesystems"
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata usb keymap filesystems"
    Then recreate with:
    mkinitcpio -g /boot/kernel26.img

  • Satellite Pro A30: CD/DVD drive not working - How to restore OS?

I want to run the recovery discs to restore my laptop to original condition but the cd/dvd rom is not working.
Does any one have an idea how I can do this either by connecting my laptop to another pc or is there a programme on the web I can access to do this for me.
Bacically even after running CCleaner and other programmes the laptop is still running slow and struggling.

    Hi mate
Im not quite sure if the old Sat Pro A30 is able to boot from USB drive. In such case you could try to install the OS from USB flash stick.
Here is a interesting posting about this theme:

  • DVD drive not working properly.....

here's the info on whats going on:
when i try to put in a CD/DVD it spits the disk out right away. after trying to put it in about five times or so, the drive takes it, makes its fancy noises to make me think that its reading the disk, but the computer doesnt recognize that it has one in the drive. sometimes it spits the disk out, but other times it will just keep it.
ive been reading posts from other users with similar issues and done everything that everyone has tried i.e. going to disk utilities and "verifying the disk" (it says everything is working normally), tried to "repair" the drive, and when i go the the info section about my disk drive it says that its read/writable, but not ejectable.
here is the info that it gives me, maybe this could be of some help to try and narrow down the possible problems:
    Name : FUJITSU MHY2160BH Media
    Type : Disk
Partition Map Scheme : GUID Partition Table
    Disk Identifier : disk0
Media Name : FUJITSU MHY2160BH Media
    Media Type : Generic
Connection Bus : Serial ATA 2
    Device Tree : /PCI0/SATA@1F,2/PRT0@0/PMP@0/@0:0
    Writable : Yes
    Ejectable : No
Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed : No
    Location : Internal
    Total Capacity : 149.1 GB (160,041,885,696 Bytes)
    S.M.A.R.T. Status : Verified
    Disk Number : 0
    Partition Number : 0
the last thing that i havent done is do a full restart of the computer. that is my last resort. anyone have any ideas on what to do?
    thank you for your time.

I have a question similar to this.....
Just recently (no updates/changes, etc) my CD drive stopped working. It won't let me enter a CD at all. It is as if there is something in there blocking it. I tried restarting the computer, but that didn't help. It acts like I have to force it in there, but I really don't want to do that. As far as I know there's nothing in there, as I rarely use the drive. Please advise if there is any sort of resets I can do for the drive (I'm still trying to get the hang of my MAC).
    Thank you for any assistance!!!!
