My external WD 1TB USB3 HDD doesn't work

My external WD 1TB USB3.0 HDD doesn't work with my new MacBook Pro 13.3" Retina, but works with my old MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and iMac. And also tried it with my friends Mac devices and they are facing the same issue as well. What should we do?

I disagree with the above post. No drivers are needed for any external drive to work on any computer, Mac or Win PC.
I'd start checking the usb ports to make sure they are functioning. If they check out as ok with something like a thumb drive or external dvd drive then it is the drive or the if these externals are usb bus powered drive it could be the newer macs are not putting out enough power from one usb port and you would need a dual usb cable that connects to 2 usb ports at the same time to supply enough power to them for them to work correctly on the newer imacs.

My external Apple USB Keyboard letters doesn't work, but the numbers do. Why and how can I fix this issue? Also, When I open the Keyboard Viewer, the letters will highlight only if I hold the modifier key(s) "Control" or "Control and Option". I really need help with this. I don't have any other computer to try it on, so I will have to test it on a friends computer sometime. But perhaps solutions that I can try right now? Thanks.

  • The shipped HDD doesn't work anywhere else!

    Hi everyone,
I have HP ProBook 4520s, it's shipped with hdd of model: ST9500420AS (Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200.4 RPM).
Now, I replaced it with another hdd (doesn't matter what it is), and I wanted to mount the old one (mentioned above) in an enlosure... but, it doesn't work properly (actually, doesn't work !) only the "installing new hardware" icon appears and takes a while to complete and then no partitions are loaded into the computer.
Checking the computer management shows that the hdd is connected but appears as RAW disk with no partitions in it, and asks me to "Initialize" the hdd, when order to initialize as MBR, an I/O error returns:
"The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."
re-mount it in the laptop directly, it works with no problems.
By the way, The enlosure works with the other hdd with no problem.
I mounted the momentus ST9500420AS hdd in a desktop pc, the same problem appear (like when mounted in the enclosure).
I googled for some solutions, at last, I may say that this hdd is locked for the laptop and can't work in other devices without doing something to it!
Please, anyone knows what to do tell me the way I should take to solve this problem, it's 500 gb hdd and I don't want to loss it
    Thank you in advance.

Thanks Mike, have already tried that weeks ago, even got a whole new router, nothing seems to do the trick. Besides, every other computer works just fine with both old or new router...  I just erased the entire macbook and reloaded the OS from scratch, perhaps something had been corrupted. It still won't pick up signal unless standing  a few feet from router, but it will maintain the signal a bit better once it's picking it up. It's still not right, however...used to work just fine.

    Hi,

Based on what you have said, I do not have an answer for you.  The obvious difference is the OS, but I find it difficult to believe that would be the problem.
Do you have another HDD to attach to the MBP?  That seems to be my last arrow in my quiver.
    Ciao.

  • Store art 1TB 3,5" doesn't work on Windows 7

    Hi,
I was using my HDD for about half an hour on Windows xp OS and everything was OK. When I installed new Windows 7 x64 I have a problem. Windows detect a HDD, but i can't send there any files. I formated it, but it doesn't help. Can someone help me?

    Hi,
I just got the same Haredisk Drive, and it won't function properly on windows 7.
I formatted it 3 times in a row now, and i chose NTFS and some option that said 4096 bytes! and it still won't work properly.
Files are being copied onto the HDD but if I try playing it, it doesn''t open or plays half way and says theres an error.
And whenever I've tried copying the same files back onto the computer it only copies half way through! and some folders won't even open.
Please help me! what do you mean by lowest setting?

  • Qosmio G20 - New HDD doesn't work

I have a G20 and trying to change out one of my 60GB HDDs for a brand new 250GB (Western Digital WD2500BEVS, SATA 150, 5400 rpm).
First thing I need to add is that hard drive is fully detectable, formatable and usable in my desktop computer...but in my G20s it only detects it in the BIOS but has a status of 'failed' and my OS (XP) cannot see it at all.
    Please can anyone help?

    Yes you are correct.
I have a 60GB running my OS and attempted to install the new hard disc into the other slot. I did change the BIOS settings to RAID-0, even tryied RAID-1 (using the 60GB I took out and the new 250GB) but the 'built-in' status at the bottom of the BIOS menu for the 250 always shows "FAILED".
I even tried taking out all other discs and using only the 250, setting it to JBOD but still the same. I must confess I have given up using this as an internal drive since I read in the manual that either I use it as a 60GB (loosing any benefit of buying a lager capacity disc), or if it was set to "JBOD" I wouldn't be able to put windows on it.
Life is too short, so last night I bought a 2.5 external caddy and it works just fine.

  • External display... just doesn't work

    Hi all,
I have been scouring forums for this problem, but it seems to be relatively uncommon, so I wonder if I am just missing some very basic steps or something.
I have an HP LP2065 monitor that works fine with my PCs. I just got this new macbook, and to use the monitor I got the Apple VGA to mini DVI connector. When I connect the monitor the macbook can detect it (right down to model number) and it lets me choose mirroring, resolution, bitrate, etc. Each time I do so it even enticingly goes black for a while as if something is actually happening. But throughout all this the monitor does not detect any display, it just tells me to "Check Video Cable" and then goes to sleep after awhile because it's not getting any info.
Weird things also happen such as the macbook not waking up properly or showing a black screen when I turn it on, until I unplug the monitor.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

Hello. Your problem is common. I use an HP SB21. The Macbook does appear to have some compatibility issues with certain brands of external display.
Please see this thread for a solution that worked for me: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1731505&tstart=0
I hope it works for you. Goodluck.

  • External HDD doesn't show on finder.

    Hello community!
My friends MacBook Air is not recognizing the HDD.
The HDD works through USB and used to work on her's iMac.
Tried to go to the disk utility and the disk doesn't show up there, neither on finder.
    Regrards,
    Rui

If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Boot into Recovery and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the System Management Controller
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • Canon mini Disk camera doesn't work if external drive connected

A long story.      Anyway, I have a MacPro Intel Dual Core 266 Ghz with 5 Gbs RAM,  4 internal hard drives HD1~HD4 (HD1 OSX 250 and three 500Gb) and two external HD5 (two partitions~HD5 & Time Machine Backups) and HD6 (1 Tb each).
I've been using a Canon mini DV video camera FV-M10 (Firewire 400) for live video (Skype/iChat) and also for importing video into Final Cut Express, After Effects or iMovie up until a few days ago.  Both "live" video and from the recorded mini cassette tape.  Then all of a sudden not one of the software recognized my camera anymore.  I tried both Firewire 800/400 and USB2 connections using a few different cables. In Skype...(sometimes) it automatically shows the name FV-M10 in the camera slot, but the screen is black.  No, I checked if I left the cover on.  I checked my Sony WX-5 digital camera and see if that is recognized.  Yes, both pics and AVCHD videos are seen using the USB connection.
    The problem started like this.
I was downloading a file.  Had to work for an hour and when I came back upstairs.  I noticed that the screen was frozen.   So, I shut the Mac down.  And when I started it again, well nothing happened except for a grey screen.  A half~sized cursor was stuck up in the top left.  But, my mouse also had a cursor which was movable.
It wouldn't even recognize the OSX Install Disk holding down "C" or "Option".  Only starting with "Shift" held down, "Safe Boot"  could I use the basics like Mail, Safari, Firefox.   NO sound and no video. Tried a few times as well as cleaned my OSX HD1 hard drive and re-installed from "Safe Boot" mode".   So, I had it sent into Apple Tokyo for repairs.   Apple put in a new board.     Great!      I came it back in two days.   I cleaned the OSX hard drive and re-installed Mac OSX with the up-dates as well and got some of my main backed up stuff Mail, bookmarks, address book etc.   It started fine.     But, when I went to use Skype, iChat, iMovie or Final Cut Express  they still couldn't recognize my camera.  I had been using the Canon FV M10 camera for a few years with both external hard drives on.  There were never any problems until just before I sent it into the shop.
There was only one way to use my camera.  Un-Plug the external HD6.  Then the camera functions fine.  but remember I had been using this camera with both HD's for around two years without any problems.
Notes on symptoms:  and what actions I took.
Front connections: FW400 Canon camera.  FW800 (Tried connecting HD6)
    Rear Connections: USB2 1) MidiMan 2 x2   2) mouse  3) Canon Printer
                                   FW400 HD5  FW800 (tried HD6)
    With HD6 Connected.
iMovie 11 9.02 : Start iMovie  O.K.  No camera on.   Turned camera "on" then "No Camera Connected" notice came up.   (did this a few times)   Turned camera off.   Quit iMovie.
2nd start:  Camera On.   iMovie freezes.   Spinning Colored beach ball.   I then Force Quit Option-Apple-ESC
iMovie shows (not responding)  When I turn off the camera.  (not responding) disappears and iMovie is working again.  But, "No Camera Connected" shows again.  Quit!
    Un-Plugged (Ejected) HD6.
When I un-plugged HD6,    (tried both the front and rear connections).   iMovie still on.
"No Camera Connected"  I Quit iMovie.
Re-start iMovie:  Camera on… Live video and record miniDV tape can both be seen.
Skype:  Both live video and mini DV tape recording even plays back over Skype screen.
    iChat (same as Skype) O.K.
Since Apple replaced the board 661-3932 Card Video, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT which cost just about $X00.00  (¥XX,000).   I assume that they don't also check all the connections etc. I mean from the connector to the video board.
The call to Apple Tokyo today.
Just talked to Apple (Mac) Tokyo about my computer problem.  Seems like they're trying to squeeze their way of more repairs by saying I have a hard drive configuration problem.   But it doesn't seem like that!   I worked with it 2~3 hours today...and  here is the basic problem.
I've used the Canon FV M10 mini DV camera with Skype, iChat, iMovie and FCEx for few  years  (HD6) is over a year old-the most recent add on) with no problem.    With both external 1Tb hard drives.  And Apple said that it's a 3-party problem.  (different makers etc.)  But, it's NOT!     Yes, they put in a new board.   But, I'd say the problem is from the connection (where I plug the cable into the Mac)  to the board.
When I connect HD6 (1Tb ext hard drive).   FW 800 (either back or front connection) the video camera doesn't work in  Skype, iChat, iMovie, or Final Cut Express.     If I eject and Un-Plug HD6  all of them work fine.  The camera "live" or the camera playing back the mini DV tape video.
Wouldn't this be a problem between the connections (front & back) to the new video board?  Or does anyone have an answer.   Apple seems to have said, "We can't help you".   Please someone help!  thanks

+My mini isn't responding to startup commands like "C" or "D" from the keyboard.+
You'll need a wired usb keyboard for these commands to work -- and the Apple Aluminum keyboard won't work either.
But just about any PC usb keyboard will work. Alt maps to Option and Win-key to CMD.

  • External Hard Drive (USB3.0) only works through USB2.0 hub

For quite a while now some of my external hard drives have not worked when directly plugged into my Macbook Pro (Mid 2012 running 10.8.5). They work perfectly when plugged into a USB hub and then into the macbook but not directly to the mac. Standard small USB flash drives work fine straight in to the macbook, the real problem appears to be USB 3.0 hard drives. These will not show up on desktop or disk utility unless I plug them in via a USB hub (which is USB2.0). The hard drive format doesn't seem to be important, currently my Mac OS Extended Time Machine backup HD is only working through USB hub, and my MyPassport WD external drive is NTFS and hasn't worked directly into the Mac for a while now.
Normally this is not a big issue, but when I am on the go it is useless to carry a USB hub around along with a MyPassport hard drive! In addition, there are times, such as when backing up, that I want the speeds offered by USB3.0 from my macbook to my hard drive.
What could be the problem? I run NTFS for Mac OSX, not sure if that would cause an issue with the direct connection.
Please help, this one is grinding my gears!
    Thanks

WD Black 2TB back in summer sold for about $179 and excellent choice.
Very important as to what controller you get and what it supports, besides Mac Pro 2010, 64-bit mode drivers.
With 4 drives you may or may not want a card+case that is Port Multiplier.
To use 4 drives you may want 4-port SATA.
The ideal might be two PCIe cards and two cases, so your data and backup are not on same controller and case. Or not.

    Hello support,
I am in big trouble I think:
My second internal HDD doesn't mount and is useless right now.
I did data recovery with Techtool onto an external drive and first of all everything looked good because the files were produced with their right sixes. When it was all done though, opening one of those files produced the line: "document could not be read. the document does not have a valid format".
Do you have any advice to give me?
    Thank you

Hi danpa, and a warm welcome to the forums!
There' another you might try too, FileSalvage is an extremely powerful Macintosh application for exploring and recovering deleted files from a drive or volume. FileSalvage is designed to restore files that have:
        * been accidentally deleted.
        * become unreadable due to media faults.
        * been stored on a drive before it was re-initialized/formatted.
