MY FAN IS ALWAYS ON FULL SPEED

Please help out there my MB fan is always on full speed especially when whatching ovies on Batt power which drains my batt quick. and i was not like that before

especially when whatching \[m?\]ovies on Batt power
First, movies are CPU-intensive tasks, which may explain the need for fan speed. That might not be all, though.
The thing to do it run /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor to see which processes are using the most CPU. It's entirely possible that you have some runaway process running that's causing the system to run hot, and therefore need additional cooling.

and sometimes i put it in sleep mode and come home on my lunch break and the fan is running at full speed and the computer has frozen up...what is going on here? is it a virus or has my computer been hijacked? it cant be good for the computer...anyone ever had this problem..?

Your problem has been reported many times, but causes are as varied as individuals.
Can we assume that a hard shutdown allows a normal restart?
Can I assume that you have used Disk Utility from your OS X install disc to repair the hard drive directory? The freezes and hard shutdowns require that the drive be repaired (not permissions) or soon the machine won't boot at all.
If the root issue is software related, in Console (the application) under Logs, there should be loggings around the time of sleep and logs that tell you what process went wild and froze the machine.
Network activity is also a common casue.

If hardware related, such as an external drive, other USB device (Wacom tablet) or USB PCI card, ejecting, disconnecting, removing, or in the case of the Wacom, updating drivers, are all potential remedies.

  • Fans are running at full speed after hard drive upgrade. Used same brand drive.

My Western Digital 500GB hard drive crashed. The date on it is Aug. 2010. I swapped it out for a Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB. All plugs were identical including the temp sensor cable. My fans now run at full speed. What gives? BTW. This is th 3rd WD hard drive to fail at my office in multiple iMacs. I have a 21.5 iMac i3 3.06ghz. I have tried the SMC reset,.. no luck. Reset the PRAM,.. no luck. Hard drive and computer function perfectly, it just sounds like a loud annoying PC.

After a little more research the only thing I found for 21.5" mid 2010 imac were three part numbers for three sensor cables which are a function of vendor:
    922-9215, Hitachi
    922-9216, Seagate
    922-9622, Western Digital
The strange thing here is these are vendor specific and not model within vendor specific.  So you started with a WD drive and replaced it with different model, but still a WD drive.  So you would think it would require the same sensor cable.
Maybe the drives are different enough for this to matter.  Or maybe you should check the connections one more time.  Be it model of drive or connections, whichever it is, the sensor cable is the source of your problem.

  • 865PE Neo2 north branch fan always running full speed

Core Center does not seem to work.  I have the latest version and it is quiet for first 5 minutes, then it gets louder and louder.  I have replaced the NB fan once and that seemed to help for a while, but now it is always running at full speed.  The fan goes to full speed even when no one is using the computer for 1/2 hour.
    1)  How to troubleshoot?
    2)  Are there other fan speed control programs that actually let you control the speed of the fans?

Try SpeedFan.  If your mobo's sensor chip is supported by Speedfan, you can adjust the fanspeed with it.
Another option would be to replace the NB fansink with a Zalman fanless northbridge heatsink like the NB47J...  I got a 865PE Neo2-V board and it came with a passive heatsink, so a passive heatsink might work OK for yours as long as you got good case airflow.
    Good luck.

  • Z68A-GD80(G3) system fan always at full speed

I updated the BIOS to J0 with ME8. Installed latest ME and chip set drivers. Set target CPU temparature to 70° and minimum fan speed to 0%. Now my system fans are always at 100%. My systems are PWM type connected to the 4 pin connector on the motherboard. I use control center to set the speed to. 50% but the setting won't stick. The fans used to stay at low speed. It is way too noisy now. Any idea what cause this?

I get around the issue by using the SpeedFan utility. Install SpeedFan and use the advance configuration to set PWM2 and PWN3 on F71889A to "TEMPERATURE" (the setting were "MANUAL"). The system fans drops to 65% immediately. PWM1 should be the CPU fan connector and is already in "TEMPERATURE". However, the setting still won't stick after reboot. I ended up creating a startup task in the Windows scheduler to run SpeedFan automatically at startup and problem solved.
I believe the CPU temp target in the J0 BIOS only control PWM1 and probably the same in previous BIOS. I used Control Center to set the fans to silent before. My guess is that that Control Center set the fan speed back to silent mode every time the system starts (it has an auto start entry in the registry). Some how that no longer works with the new BIOS/ME8. I even tried reinstalling Control Center and still no luck.
I hope MSI reintroduce settings for PWM2 and PWM3 directly in future BIOS update.

  • One of my MacBook Pro's fans is running at full speed

Out of the blue today, my 2011 MacBook Pro started fans went mental when I awoke if from it's sleep. They started running at full speed, far louder than I've ever heard them before. I searched through other discussions and it suggested I try an SMC reset. I performed one of these with no success.
I then opened smcFanControl and noticed that my leftside fan was running at 7000rpm+ and the rightside fan was running at normal speed 2000rpm. It randomly spools on and off high speed and I cannot find any fixes or similar problems online. Can anyone suggest a fix for this or should I be taking it to a repairer?
FYI my logic board was only replaced in April under warranty so could it be faulty?

    Hi andyBall_uk
SMC fan control measures temp also. Currently running at 47*C as you can see in the screenshot below. I tried overriding the fan speeds...works for the right fan but not the left one so it appears only the left fan has the fault.
The weird thing is, when you press your finger down anywhere on the left speaker next to the built-in keyboard, the fan slows back down to normal speed, but when you let go it speeds back up again. I might open it up in the morning to see if any of the connections are loose, because it seems weird that this happens with a small amount of pressure applied to the body. Also of you tilt the macbook it sometimes slows back down to normal speed (but sometimes stays at high speed). I will let you know how I go. Thanks for your suggestion/s

  • G5 Dual 1.8 GHz fans gradually go to full speed and stay there

My G5 Dual 1.8 GHz boots normally and quietly, with no freezes or panics. However, within a minute or so, I hear the fans begin to gradually gain speed. This continues for a couple of minutes until the fans reach maximum speed, making my room sound like a wind tunnel. This occurs with no programs running, just sitting idle at the Finder desktop.
I've checked the CPU & system temperatures using the shareware utility "Temperature Monitor 2.5" and everything is running cool, barely above room ambient, so there is no thermal reason for the fans to "take-off" like this as the heat pipes are doing their jobs to cool the CPUs.
There is no restriction on air flow around the case, and the acrylic side panel is installed. Interestingly, removing the side panel seems to have no effect on fan speed, whether installed or not ... maybe it's just the liquid cooled G5s, but isn't removing the side panel suppose to force the fans to full speed?
I was wondering if this out of control fan speed is a known issue that can be resolved with either a firmware update or software patch? Does this indicate the need for a thermal recalibration?

I've since answered my own question on this ... The reseller had installed OSX 10.3.2 as the boot OS. The (Late 2004) DP 1.8 GHz G5 requires 10.3.5 minimum, and with that update, the problem went away. The G5 now runs quietly.
This was far simpler than I had expected. Thanks.

  • 2012 iMac fan sporadically running at full speed.

I purchased a 21" iMac in October. In the last two weeks, the fan has started having issues. It will intermittintely run at full speed for anywhere from 5 to 20 seconds, and then shut off, only to max out again in a minute or so. The computer itself is cool to the touch, the only programs running are Finder and Google Chrome, and it's in a well ventilated and cool area. I've already reset the SMC and the PRAM, seeing if either of those solved the issue, but it is still occuring. Anyone have any idea what might be causing this?

Could be a defective sensor. You can also try Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) and see if fixes it. If the computer is newly purchased, then take it to the Apple Store for repair. it's in warranty.

  • Fans go on at full speed 1 min. after computer goes to sleep

Problem: Fans go to full speed 1 min. after it goes to sleep-mode. The fans will stay on until it wakes up from sleep-mode.
Computer: Apple Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3, OS 10.4.9, 4.5 GB RAM. 2 HD, late 2005 version.
The problem happens every time I put it to sleep, even right after it has been turned on.
I have measured the CPU temp to be as low as 36-40C and it will still turn the fans on high speed when put to sleep.
I have reset the P-RAM and the SMU.
I have installed a fresh version of OS 10.4.9 on second drive, booted from it and it still turn the fans on 1 minute after it goes to sleep.
I have had all the RAM out beside the original RAM. I did an extended Apple Hardware test which passed.
    ...any ideas ?

5 Macs in total   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

After trying all that, it sounds like it's hardware-related--possible logic board--but try this yet.
Do an Open Firmware reset: Hold the CommandOption+OF keys during startup. At the '>' prompt type:
     >reset-nvram
     Return
      >set-defaults
     Return
      >reset-all
     Return
The reason the fans are taking off, is because the OS stops communicating with the logic board.

  • P67A-GD65 - CPUFAN always at full speed

    Hello,
I have three Scythe GentleTyphoon AP-15 connected to CPUFAN, SYSFAN1 and SYSFAN2.
The two fans connected to SYSFAN1 and SYSFAN2 are perfectly controlable (0% ~ 100%) via BIOS, MSI Control Center, SpeedFan, etc.
But, the one fan connected to CPUFAN cannot be controlled. It remains at 100% speed whatever I do and wherever.
I had an Intel stock cooler connected to CPUFAN before and it was controllable (50% ~ 100%).
Is the CPUFAN connector only controllable with PWM fans or am I missing something?
    Thank you in advance.

Quote from: Bas on 10-June-11, 22:49:55
You need a PWM fan if you don't have the 3/4 pin fan selection in the BIOS.
    I am sorry,
I did not understand the 'bold' part.

  • Mac Pro fans blowing continuously at full speed.

Hi guys, just bought a Mac Pro off someone. 2006 model, 2.0 quad core.
The guy was running two x western digital 500GB drives. But took them out and replaced it with a seagte ST3500413AS 500gb drive (new).
Mac OSX installed fine. But when i boot it up the fans go crazy! and dont stop.
Did a heat montior test and all looked okay, i think it was 30-50 degrees for every component.
Used istat and the figures for the fans were as follows:
    Figures show approx:
    Power suply 599rpm
    Exhaust 1547rpm
    CPU fan 499rpm
    HD expansion 2865rpm
Now obviously somethings wrong. I took the drive out and pushed it back in to make sure it made good contact, i have swapped bays etc, same problem.
    Any ideas guys?

Launch the Activity Monitor application and select the CPU tab. Click the heading of the "% CPU" column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for "% User," "% System," and "% Idle" at the bottom of the window.

  • Cooling fan just came on full speed

Freaked me out. Didn't know there was a cooling fan.
How do I get it to turn off?
It started up when I started a program. Restarting and shutdown doesn't make a difference.
There haven't been any recent updates described as "firmware". All recent SW updates have been applied.
Got a phone call the other day asking if I wanted to extend the warranty. I said "No". Hmm.

  • Mac mini server and harddrive 1 of 2 failed now fan runs full speed

I have a 2010 mac mini server. One of the drives failed.
I took out the bad one and the fan started to run full speed.
Replaced that drive with a new one. runs great but fan is running.
I put the temp sensor in exact same place but had to use a small pc of tape
to hold it on. I used the same tape that was holding the wires to the drive.
I used the temp sensor connector on the logic board closest to the fan connector?
    Does that matter?

    Hello, possible work arounds...
    HDD Fan Control
HDD Fan Control works to fix this issue by reading the drives internal temperature using the S.M.A.R.T protocol and set the fans actual speed to a value good to protect the drive.
It runs at startup and continually to always control the fan correctly, prevent the loud fan noise and protect the drive from overheating.
    Free SSDFan Control...

  • Macbook May 2010 edition exhaust fan runs at full speed

Bought a new Macbook around February 2011. Yesterday all of a sudden while watching Netflix, the exhaust fan started running at full speed (Approximately 6200 RPM). I thought the machine was overheating. So I immediately shut it down and let it cool. But I noticed the machine was barely warm.
When I started it up again, it started making the same noise with the exhaust fan running at full speed. I installed SMCFanControl and I see that the CPU is barely warm - 35-37C and yet the fan is running at full speed. I looked at the CPU/HDD usage and there is barely ANY usage (~90% idle). Nothing out of the ordinary. So it definitely doesn't seem to be a heating issue.
In order to troubleshoot this I have done the following:
    1. Installed latest upgrade - Snow Leopard 10.6.7
    2. Reset SMC
    3. Reset the PRAM
    4. Tried booting from the install DVD. There as well it exhibits the same issue.
Neither of these steps have helped me with my situation. I would really hate to go to the apple store as its always crowded and would end up wasting time. Are there any other steps I could try?
Update: I tried running the Apple Hardware Test from the DVD. This is the error code that I got: 4SNS/1/40000001: TN1D- -1.000
Can someone please tell me what this means?

I don't know what that code means for sure, but it sounds like one of the temperature sensors may have died, so the fans just run at full to cool.
I would take it to the apple store.

  • Fans run full speed on stand-by and burner problem iMac 24-inch early 2009

In standby sometimes the fans are running at full speed. Also with burning some CD or DVD's the burner makes an awful grunting sound.
For a 2 year old Mac I did not expect to have these kind of problems!
Resetting the iMac does not help. Might this be a Lion problem?
Optical Drive is running at 4800rpm, normal 798rpm
Hard Drive at 5903rpm, normal 1599rpm
    CPU at 3598rpm normal, 1200rpm
The burning problem only happens sometimes, not with all.

What did you do to reset the imac? Problems like these are "sometimes" solved with an SMC reset.
