My fan stopped working

my fan suddenly stopped working and the computor shuts down

The fan could have stopped for a few reasons. It could have blockage such as dust/hair preventing it from spinning. It could be physically broken and unable to turn. It could be a motherboard/BIOS issue.
You can take the notebook apart but it's not as easy as removing a panel on the bottom.
Is it still under warranty?

  • GPU Fan stop working.

    Hi Everyone,
I just bought this laptop HP Pavilion dv6-6009tx Entertainment Notebook PC  a year ago, from my school's roadshow. Until recently, the fan stops working... my computer started to heat up real bad to around 70 degree celcius. I still have 2 year warranty for this laptop. Can I ask if hardware failure replacement is covered by the warranty? Cheers!
    - Alan.

If the fan has stopped working HP will (should) fix it under warranty. Call them and report it.

  • Old GX660 fan stopped working

    Hey,
I still use my old GX660 as a media center but the fan stopped working, since it's been a long time, easily more than 3 years I was wondering how I could get a new fan please... it's just that part that I need everything still works perfectly.

How much would this cost do you think, I found the fan on the internet and I'd pay less than 30€, I don't know if it's even worth sending it to MSI I'm sure they'll charge me for shipping (and return) + repair fees.

  • Upgraded to windows 7 = fan stopped working

Hi, I recently upgraded to windows 7, and when I did that my fan stopped working. So now when I'm playing a game I can play about 20 min before the computer shuts down because of overheating (I'm using a cooling plate, that's why I can play for so long).
I've upgraded everything on this laptop (including the BIOS), but the fan still won't work.
I hope that you can help me.

Coincidence? After upgrading to 7 Pro, my W500 has been running significantly hotter and battery life has plumeted. I can hear the running. It's so hot that I can barely hold it...

  • Dv7t - 2000 fan stopped working

the fan has completely stopped working. I tried spraying it with air but it did nothing. I'm not certain what to do...I don't want to open it up because that would probably void the warrenty.

Yes it will. This is one where you need to contact HP Support.

  • Fan stopped working

My MacBook Pro is getting very hot and I think that may mean the fan has stopped working. Is this something I can replace?

Yes if it is the fan, you can replace it if you are fairly techincal/mechanical. You will need to have the model # which you can find here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4132
    You can check the internet by searching replace Macbook Pro Fan, there are sites for parts and how to vids, like the folowing;
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Core+Duo+Model+A1150+Left+Fan+Re placement/501
You will need some tools, #00 phillips, triwing screw drivers, etc..
If you are not comfortable, you can bring it to an Apple genius bar for a FREE diagnosis/repair quote.
Also try an SMC reset to see if it may be the fan controller setting:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow directions for the battery that you have, you can remove yourself, or a battery you should not remove yourself

  • Noisy fan stopped working

Ok i just had a slightly more angry post rejected by "the central scrutinizer"
    But i've calmed down now....
The main issue was a noisy fan that has stopped working altogether this week. The computer can't be run without being placed on an ice pack or it overheats and shuts down.
What are the chances if any of getting the fans to work again?
The computer (a macbook 2ghz, mid 2006) is way out of warranty so i'd like some advice on fixing it myself.
A while ago it suffered a click of death Hard drive failure and i re-installed the original drive (it had been upgraded to 120gb by the engineers at Microlink UK)
Could it need a firmware upgrade to run the fans properly?

I fixed it myself today after finding excellent instructions at ifixit.com! The instructions were very clear and easy to follow with large images. Thanks for pointing me there.
I stripped the MacBook down to the fan and found it full of dust and fluff around the exit grille. More importantly, the fan mounting was basically distorted downwards so that the blades were against the floor and stuck there! A quick glance along the keyboard showed how bent it was so i did some careful "panel Beating" to get it back into shape.
I think the plastic had warped over time and this put downward pressure on all the components underneath, the extra heating of the blocked fans only made it worse. The keyboard is backed by a thin metal sheet so it would appear this had an effect similar to a bi-metallic strip.
Luckily the keyboard can be re-shaped quite easily. I'd advise care if doing this yourself as the plastic "rivets" can pop out with too much bending.
Now i've assembled the MacBook again it's running the fan (there is only 1) so quietly that it's barely audible at 4000 rpm and it's much more efficient.
I'm surprised it's not burnt out actually.

  • Laptop fans stopped working!

I own an MSI laptop, model number M285 or FID2010. For some reason when the laptop switches on the fans start running, but as soon as the laptop begins to load windows the fans stop, causing the laptop to overheat. Can anyone please tell me why it is doing this and how to resolve it? Does the BIOS need re-flashing?
Thanks in advance for your help

I don't recall reading any posts on MSI laptops in any of our forums. I would suggest you contact MSI directly:

  • [Tech Help Needed] GTX 660 Twin Frozr III 2GB SC Fan Stops Working

    Hello everyone.
It's extremely rare for me to have computer issues, but this time it happened.
MSI GTX 660 Twin Frozr III 2GB SC, and here's the issue:
Whenever i turn on the computer the gpu fans spin for around 5seconds and after that they stop, for now they seem fine since i'm usually idling for the 1st 30minutes or so, but when i start playing games the gpu temperatures skyrocket to around 60-70 idling  in-game and the fans just won't start working, yes the the psu cables are connected to the gpu, bla bla ( duh ). i've had the gpu for around 2years and it worked fine but all of a "sudden" the fans just seem to not work and it starts getting very high temperatures, i've read someone complaining about the same issue and he was told to replace his gpu bios with some uefi bios and he said that the uefi update solved his fan issues which were the same as mine.
Now my problem is, i've never done that "Bios Flashing" and things like that and i don't know if my Board is compatible. If it worked for that person then it should work for me since the symptoms are literally the same. I've tried uninstalling the gpu drivers completely and installed again, the issue still persists.
If it's of any reference i own the following setup:
MB : ROG Asus Crosshair IV Formula
CPU : AMD Phenom II X6 1090T BE
GPU : MSI GTX 660 Twin Frozr III 2GB SC
    RAM : 2x4GB G.Skill Ripjaw X 1600Mhz
PSU: Corsair GS 700 Gaming Series ( yes its more than enough and good enough )
I've literally had no problems whatsoever with my system for a few years now, and just like that the fans don't want to work, i can play games and what not, but at around 70ºC with no fans running ..... i've tried using MSI Afterburner to boost the fan speed, the fan speed setting gets set but the rpm stays at 0. i also made it to run on windows start and its still at 0 RPM.
Will the uefi bios solve my problem like it did to the other person with the exact same issue?
Thank you for your time spent reading, hopefully it will be solved.

Still no reply after 2 days, impressive support right there ... every other post that came after got replied ...
Anyway, if its also relevant about my issue :
    - Fans briefly spin after i press the power button to turn on my computer and stop right after around 3-5s and never spin again until i shutdown and power on again for the same brief spin.
    - If i force the fans on Afterburner to 90% or above ( 100% ) they spin and make unsupportable noise.
Also if its of any relevance :
    N660 TF 2GD5/OC
    S/N: 602 - V287 - 050B1302044857
At least provide me with the most up-to-date uefi/gop vbios or whatever that is, to see if it fixes my problem, otherwise recommend me a substitute cooling system that i can use ( a good one, not 3rd rated ) to replace the stock cooling in this because i don't have the money to get another card, and if i get one it won't be from msi for sure.
    Very dissapointed.

  • Fan stop working

I have a Toshiba L655-s5198. The fan has stop spinning and then have the pop up saying st and I have already clean the heatsink (though since it completely close, there is minimal dust). it will every now and then spin but like roughly less than once every week. the bios is updated to 2.70. Would replacing the fan fix the problem?

I can't say for sure, but it does sound like you should have it serviced.

  • Laptop fan stops working

    Hi all,
I've got a dv6-6136tx which I have had for about 2 years now. Just recently (earlier today) my fan just stopped while playing a game. The cpu was running at about 78 celcius and the gpu at 72 clecius.
Is there any particular reason for this? Is there anyway to stop it from doing it?
    any help would be appreciated!
    This question was solved.

For some reason, the specifications were not listed on HP's site.
Page 90 of this manual details the various fans and heatsinks available for the various models of DV6 notebooks. You will need to match the part number with the processor and video card system. Once you have the part number, you can look it up here. Be sure to select the proper country at the top-right.
I don't know if you are familiar with the terms discrete and UMA, so I will provide the translation below.
Discrete video memory = dedicated memory. This means the video card's RAM does not pull from the system RAM. Think of this as a dedicated video card versus integrated video cards.
UMA = integrated video card memory. This means it pulls from the system RAM.
The part store, or part surfer, should list if thermal paste is included. I have not seen any yet that do not include it, but there is a first for everything. I recommend using a thermal paste cleaner to remove the old thermal paste and to use fresh thermal paste with the new heatsink. The fan is not sold separately, so might as well replace the heatsink as well.
Let me know how it goes.
