My Fans Never Shut Off

When I first got my new macbook pro, the fans only turned on once in a while when the system got hot. All of the sudden, they are always on. From the moment I turn on the system to the moment I shut it down, the fan is always on. Is this normal? Why did it suddenly change for me?
Thanks

I ran the hardware test and it didn't find anything wrong. The noise that I'm hearing is a really really low blowing noise that comes from the left side of the notebook. When the AC turns on or if there's another noise in the room I can't even hear it. And then sometimes the fans get louder, maybe that's when the fans are actually turning on, like when I insert a CD or soemthing the blowing gets much louder. I'm thinking that this must then be normal if it's such a low noise and then the blowing gets loud when I think it actually needs the fans.

  • H330 Fan Never Shuts Off

So as the title says the side fan and only fan in my H330 never shuts off so either I am running hot or the fan is malfuntioning. Around what temps should I be looking for in my bios to help diagnose the problem ? Any other idea or suggestions greatly appreciated. I still have a warranty so that is also an option for me FYI.

    hi grandprix60490,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Community.
The fan usually spins at a high rate if the BIOS configuration is setup that way or if the thermal sensor is picking up high temperature reading. If you're concern about the heat, you can use CoreTemp to monitor the temperature (it also monitors the TJ Max of the CPU (this is around 95-100 degrees celsius for Intel chips). When a CPU core goes beyond the TJ Max, a CPU throttle, downclock, a BSOD, or a system shutdown will occur. You can get it here - http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/
If you're hearing any rattling / grinding noise that's comming out from the fan, you will need to send the unit in for service. Otherwise, if you're just running on medium load and the one of the CPU core reaches TJ max, the thermal paste (CPU cooling compound) needs to be re-applied.
    Hope this helps

  • The fan on my iMac never shuts off?

The fan on my iMac never shuts off? Would someone be able to suggest what is the probable cause of this and what can I do about it?

Sometimes an SMC reset can help resolve this. If it fixes it but proves to be temporary a trip to the workshop may be needed:

  • Press B3 on a keyboard, and the tone never shuts off

This is happening in the ES E synth, the ES M, the ES1, the ES2, and EXS24. And only in Logic, not in Reason or Live.
I select one of these synths, and as soon as I press the B3 key on my MIDI controller keyboard, the key tone will never shut off. All other keys continue to work fine, but that B3 will never shut up again once it is pressed. This happens (currently) 100% of the time for me.
    Makes the software pretty useless..

    Hello korncompaq,
    Your computer will not boot.
It sounds like you may have a problem with your board.
I’d suggest take the computer somewhere local and have them check everything out.
Let me know how everything goes.

  • TB NEVER shuts off when running "Gentle Alarm"

I've been running an App called "Gentle Alarm" at night, and every time it is running, my TB has never shutoff.  The phone is always sitting there with the app running when i wake up in the morning.  I open the app, and select "Night Display" on the right at the top and it dims a little bit, then the clock keeps floating around the screen all night.
So, I'm guessing, that there is something that this app shuts off when it runs and allows it to keep running all night that is causing all of our headaches with the thunderbolt.
I'm hoping there's some kind of scientific explanation for it and that I just haven't been lucky that it hasn't shut off since I've been running this app....
I'm using the paid version that was available as the free app of the day a month back on May 9th....

Forget it.  It rebooted a minute ago....

  • 2740p fan never turn off

I have brand new 2740p laptop and its fan never stop. Even when the cpu usage is 0%.  It's constantly blow cold air and make noise. Is this normal for this model or is there something wrong ?

    OK.
I don't know why that is happening then.
I read the release notes for your latest BIOS update and that doesn't address a fan constantly running issue.
I suggest you contact HP technical support for further assistance, since your notebook is new and still should be under warranty.  It is possible there is a bad thermal bond between the processor and other chips.
If it is a brand new PC, you may want to give it a week of start up and shut downs to make sure these parts have had time to establish a good thermal transfer as the thermal compound needs a litte time to make the optimum contact between heat sink and affected chips.

  • After mavericks upgrade fans never go off

Over the last few days, I began to notice that the fans on my early 2009 imac never go off, (didnt notice at first because I usually run the TV in the background)
Installed temp monitoring software, but did not really find an answer that was obvious.
Purchased new, used in a non smoking enviroment in a cold room.
Noticed two things, one is the fans never came on much because the average temp in the room is 68 amb temp.
If I run a high CPU prog or FSP, Abobe, ect, the fans come on for a bit then gradully ease off.
This I considered normal, however over time, I noticed that the fans were staying on longer.
Now they never go off, even when placed in sleep mode, until upgrading to mavericks, the fans remain on even when in sleep mode.
The only way to get them to turn off is to turn off the computer.
    Any ideas thoughts ect, thanks.

Tried that previously, also reset pram nvram, tried it again, (just in case) but no change in fan always on condition, (I guess its better than a melt down) just wondering if something is about to pop, would rather service the unit than loose my data or loose the board.
Oh, also as an interesting comparison, updated my Macbook pro, mid 2010 17 inch, it also has the same condition, fans just run and run, not full speed as some others are reporting, just the lowest speed, default.
But they never go off, even in sleep or when the lid is closed on mac book pro

  • My Macbook Pro has a noisy fan and shuts off from time to time

Every once in awhile while using my new 2011 15" Macbook Pro (which I purchased in August) the fans will start running really loud. I usully dont even do things that require a lot of power such as working on Office docs and surfing the web. Sometimes it gets so bad that the computer just shuts off. Then when I turn it back on it wont boot up for a few minutes. I've already taken it to the Genius Bar twice and they were unable to replicate my problem so they would not replace it. Is there any quick fixes for this issue?

this sounds like its overheating. when it does this can you tell what graphics processor is in operation, you can do that by either using gfxCardStatus (a app that sits in the menu bar that tells you which gpu is in operation) or by going into the more info section of About This Mac and under display it should say which processor is in use at that time, either the AMD discrete GPU or the Intel Integrated one

  • Screen Never Shuts Off

Recently the back light / screen of my Blackberry Curve never seems to shut itself off after no use and/or when charging and it's draining my battery very quickly.  Prior, it used to shut down during charging and/or when not in use after about 20 minutes.  Does anyone know how to correct this problem?  Thanks much

    Hello !
    Try the following:
Go to Options>Screen/Keybaord>Backlight Timeout (select accordingly)
Also if you prefer you can check out for Automatically Dim Backlight.
    Hope this resolves your Problem!

  • Fans never turn off!

sometimes when the fan in my macbook kicks on, it stays on until i force the computer to shut down (when the fan is stuck on, it won't shut down...the blue screen comes up and the circle thing comes up, but it won't shut down...i have to hold down the power button). sometimes i can get it to sleep, but as soon as i wake it up, the fan kicks back on. sometimes it won't sleep at all when the fan is on.
    any thoughts?

It's my understanding that the fan IS always on when the machine is on; that's what keeps the temperature within reason. The fact that you can HEAR the fan is perhaps more of an issue. The default speed of the fan (what it's running at when it's not under load) is 1800 rpm. At that speed, unless you have pretty sharp hearing, you shouldn't really notice it unless there's something wrong with it. Under heavier loads, the fan will speed up and become louder; it is normal to hear it then.
You can download a program called smcFanControl to find out what temperature your machine is running at and how fast your fan is running. If it's significantly faster than 1800 rpm when you're not running much of anything, then you probably need to do further investigation to see if you have anything running in the background that you aren't aware of it. If it's really noisy at low fan speeds, then you might want to have Apple take a look at it and see if the fan needs to be replaced.

  • My fan wont shut off.

The fan on my macbook is consantly running. I dont see any thing blocking it but its always on... can anyone help me?

    Hey Gang,
My battery died (o% and would not charge). I also had a fan Problem. It worked so hard I thought it was ready for lift off. When I got a new battery, the fan seemed to correct itself. I've only had the battery for a day but the fan has not made the excessive noise it once did. I've opened many apps. to challenge the cpu and still - all quiet on the MacBook front.

  • Nano 3g screen never shuts off while doc'ed

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
just got the new nano and when I have it plugged into the usb cable to charge/sync the screen stays on showing the sync cable and saying to eject before disconnecting. even when i go to bed and wake up the next morning the screen is still on.
seems like it should go into sleep mode or something to preserve the screen. Does anyone know if this is normal or is there a setting I am missing?
thanks for any help you can give.
    peter

My iPod does this too. I tried switching the backlight to 5 seconds, and this seemed to stop the proglem. If this doesn't work, select "sleep" in the extras menu on your iPod. I know that seems silly, but it mostly works.

  • Why does my lock screen never shut off?

When  I click the lock button, my lock screen will stay on forever unless I click the lock button again. Also, if I get a text and I don't know about it, my lock screen will stay on and drain my battery until I notice I got the text. Once I didn't notice for 2 hours, so my battery was very low since my lock screen stayed on the entire time. I'm not sure what the problem is because I've set auto lock on to one minute, but auto lock has nothing to do with the lock screen. Help?

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • IMac 27" (mid 2010) FAN WILL NOT SHUT OFF

Hey, I'm not sure if this topic has been brought up in the past or not, but I'm having major problems with my iMac and the fan never turning off. From the moment I turn the computer on the fan is running at full speed.
Computer has plenty of ventilation - running off of a surge protected power bar - almost never have more than 2 or 3 applications running at one time. The fan will run at full speed with no applications running as well.
I have taken the computer back to the company I purchased it from so their tech department could review it, they said there's nothing wrong...
I reviewed the article on apple's website regarding fan issues and resetting the SMC. I followed the exact procedure noted to reset the SMC and it did not fix the issue.
Has anyone else had this issue? What did you do to fix it? My computer is less than 2 months old has nothing on it except for iTunes and a few scanned fax documents...
    Please Help!!!

    Rik84,
    Welcome to Apple Support Discussions.
Is this how you did the SMC reset, either way please re-do it and a PRAM reset as follows:
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all other cords.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    _PRAM RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.

  • Fans won't shut off on Yikes! while sleeping

Hey everyone. My Yikes! G4 will sleep somewhat (screen goes blank, hard drives turn off) when running OS X, but the fans never turn off, and the optical mouse remains lit (moving it will wake the computer up). This has happened under both 10.3 and 10.4. I have a SCSI card (pulled from a Power Mac G3) installed, but even before it was there, the computer still refused to truly sleep under OS X. It sleeps perfectly fine under OS 9. My Beige G3 (running 10.2.6 and 9.2.2) behaves the same way. I have a feeling that the computer is drawing more power in this 'light sleep' mode than it would if it were truly sleeping. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
    -Adam
PowerMac G4 (PCI Graphics)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   512MB RAM, DVD-ROM, SCSI card

At the moment, I have no USB devices attached other than the Apple keyboard and pro mouse, and I have no Firewire devices plugged in. As far as modifications, I have installed a second HD, bumped the CPU speed up by 50MHz, installed a stock-type DVD-ROM drive (with the corresponding video card/DVD decoder), and installed a SCSI card (a pull from a PowerMac G3, and has nothing connected to it), but it never went into deep sleep under OS X even before I made these modifications. Again, any ideas? TIA.
