My fans seem to always be on...why?

I'm using my Macbook either at a desk or on a bed and for some reason lately my fans have been running a lot. 60-80% of my experiences recently have been with the fans on full blast. Why is this? What can i do to make fan usage normal again?

Open *Activity Monitor* when this occurs and see what is using up percentage of your CPU. Be sure at the top to choose *All Processes* so you can see what is causing this. Usually it is a print process that is running when it isn't supposed to be on my MacBook. If it is something you don't recognize you should be able to kill it with no problem.

  • My laptop is getting very hot and the fan seems to always be on. The battery dies quickly too.

Mac Pro 4 + years old. Bottom getting hot. Fan seems to run constantly when in use, or when charging. The charge does not last longer than 2 to 2.5 hours. Unplugging seems to cool it off as well as shutting down.

    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

  • Why does my cooling fan seem to run continuously?

Lately, my cooling fan seems to run continuously. Any ideas why and what I can do are appreciated!

Yikes, that is terrible, is it really warm where you are? Any dust clogging vents? Can you raise it a bit off the surface it's on?

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion today, my battery only lasts less than 1:30 and the fans seem to run constantly. Help?

I have a late 2011 13" MBP with a 2.8 GHz i7 processor and 4GB of RAM. With OSX 10.7, my battery could last over 4:30; however, now I see the battery drop a percentage point about every minute (currently at 81% and it says 1:16 remaining). I have a number of programs open (Chrome, Mail, iTunes, Twitter, Skype), but these are the same programs I almost always had running with Lion and I never had this problem. Something else new is that the fan seems to constantly be running and only turns off if I put the computer to sleep.
Here are screenshots of my activity monitor: http://imgur.com/a/shehM
    Any advice?
My battery has decreased to 70% (1:07 remaining) by the time I've finished writing this...

It looks like Skype is basically running two CPU cores at nearly full throttle (well, 1.57 cores).  That's bound to drain the battery pretty quickly.  If you were not doing a high resolution video chat in Skype when you took that screen shot, then something is very wrong with it.  Check and see if there's a newer version of Skype available that fixes the problem.

  • Fan seems to be constantly on

    Hello,
I have a Late 2008 Macbook Pro 15" (2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo with 4 gigs of memory. I am running Snow Leopard (10.6.2). I upgraded in mid September. The past few days I have been noticing that the fans seem to be on ALL of the time.
I have an iBook as well and I was very impressed when I got the Macbook Pro because its power, heat, and fan management was great compared to the iBook. I have never asked myself, why is the fan powering and why is it loud.
Take today, I am working at my desk and I am running Safari with 3 windows open and Photoshop CS4. Nothing else. I am not doing any heavy graphics and only manipulating text. I downloading a Fan Control and with barely anything I am running at 61.5 degrees C with the fans running like crazy.
The RPM is 3637 both of the fans.
As I am writing this post I have restarted and did a SMC reset. I have one window open and the fans are running, much more quiet but I can still hear it. Temp is at 52.9 C and the RPM is at 2022.
Why am I all of a sudden noticing the overheating and fans when nothing has really changed.

I have the same issue. I got this computer in June and was amazed/took note of how quiet it was.
Towards the end of the summer, it started running very hot and the fans were on high. I did the smc reset - the heat dissipated and the fan speeds went down. BUT... ever since then I hear the fans. They are running at 2000 rpm +/- 10 rpms. I am also getting a slight, but before non-existent, vibration through the keyboard - this is something relatively new.
I almost feel (or at least they sound like) the fans are running above 2500 but that istat pro and hardware monitor are getting inaccurate readings of 2000. I don't know if that's possible but I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to figure this out, and that's the best I came up with.
I had the fan replaced by Apple, reinstalled Snow Leopard, cleared some system caches, did all the resets (smc, pram, battery). But no results.
I talked to one Apple employee who has a new 2.66 and he said his was silent - while mine I constantly hear the woosh. I also have a white MacBook which is whisper quiet - and similar to what this MacBook Pro was when I first got it. (The problem they have when trying to diagnose it at the Genius Bar, even if they bring it in the back, is that the store's noises cancel out the woosh that is otherwise evident in a normal office setting)
If you find out anything let me know and I'll keep you posted here.

  • Acrobat 9 pro seems to be damaging files, why?

I tried searching for information. but haven't been able to find a prior discussion that helps.
I have been using acrobat 9 pro on windows vista x64.  I build files by dragging and dropping pages from one file to another.  This is so that instead of having 12 files for a years worth of one bill, I have one.
This has happened more than once, so I did a full scan of my hard drive looking for bad sectors in case the problem was the file being written onto a bad sector.
What happens is that I open a file that has been fine and some of the pages are blank, both the thumbnail and the page.  When this has happened before each re-open produces more blank pages.
The current file is 30,824 K.
Any idea why this happens and what I can do to prevent it?

I am not sure how to do this given what I am  doing.
Scenario 1:  I have scanned a bunch of pages into a single pdf file and at my leisure move the pages to different files.  Not sure how I would use insert pages in this situation.
Scenario 2:  I open a monthly statement and move the pages into another file containing previous months statements.  Would I have to actually save the file first before I could follow your suggestion?
Is there anyway of determining what fonts I need in order to check if I have them?

To test the font issue, try using insert pages to add a file to another one rather than the drag and drop. There could be a bug in the latter, or just that fonts don't work well with that process, particularly if you do not have the fonts on your system.

  • My laptop fan speed is always going so high...

    Hello there.
My laptop fan speed is always running so loud most of the time when I don't even have many programs running. How can I control the fan speed?

    Yes, you can:

However, I'd look at the root cause also. See what processes are running and see if any are hogging the processor

The unix commands you need are:
    GetFileInfo
    SetFileInfo
    and maybe find
for cryptic details use the man command
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    man SetFileInfo
You may use the SetFileInfo command to set the file type & the program which will open the file.
