My FCP3 won't recognize .mov file

Hello folks, I had finished a project about a month ago and in order to save my hard drive disk space, I erased all the source footages right after I got the final product made which was the DVD.
However, now I am trying to produce the different langauge version with the same footages which was exported as .mov file that was used for first project and I tried to import the same .mov files into my FCP3 to work on it but it says "unknown file" error msg.
I thought that .mov file is the primary recognizable file format for every FCP and why this is happening?
I paid for translation of the script and everything, if it won't work, I am screwed! please folks help me and I'd really appreciate it!
THanks

Well,
If you exported your movie as a NON-SELFCONTAINED quicktime file, you need to recapture your original footage. FCP can not play a file when the referenced video does not exist.
cheers,
x

  • Quicktime won't recognize MOV files?

QT won't open MOV files, and gives a -2048 error that says it is not a file it recognizes. I know other people who are able to open the same files fine on their Mac computers, so I don't think it's a problem with the file...

The -2048 error message usually means the file is MPEG-2 format.
QuickTime can't view MPEG-2 without additional software ($20).

  • IPhoto won't recognize *.MOV file for playing and for importing

My iPhoto is giving me an "unreadable file format" error on *.mov files after I upgraded to iPhoto '11.   I have problem with video files that were working in iPhoto before and on files trying to import from my iphone or from my camera.   I made new library and tried to import *.mov file to the new library to check if my library is corrupted.  I get same error message.   The *.mov file plays fine with quicktime when I import files using Preview to my computer.   I just cannot import new video to iPhoto and play videos from iPhoto.
How do I make iPhoto recognize the *.mov file again and make the video file play properly?  I miss my old iPhoto

    Henji,
have you used a maintainance application lately, that has cleaned some caches? Then check, if you still have the file "com.apple.xpchelper.cache"  in the System Library in the folder "/System/Library/Caches/".
If this file is missing, that might be the reason that you cannot play or import videos any longer. Then restore it from your backup, if you have a clone of your system.  ALJ posted a link to a copy of this file in another thread: Re: Import video to Aperture library on Mountain Lion

  • No sound, no slideshow, won't recognize .mov file

    Hi.
I have a whole string of problems that went from bad to worse... I sent an iPhoto slideshow to iDVD.
First, I couldn't get changes in font style and size to stay after leaving one menu for another. Every time I returned to a previous menu the default font would be reinstated.
Next I tried to undo and operation and iDVD disappeared, shut down.
I got an update for iDVD, Quicktime and others (Aperture, Bluetooth, macbook EFI Firmware) and restarted.
Then I tried to resend the slideshow from iPhoto to iDVD and got <Can't Find Audio File. Missing File Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/IDVD7/Audio> Now there is no theme music in the theme menus. MPEG4 icon is there, and menu song title but time reads 00:00 and the volume bar is frozen at min.
After reading some forums I trashed the .com.apple.iDVD.plist in User/Library/Preferences, repaired disc permissions and then restarted and tried again.
Now after sending iPhoto slideshow to iDVD I get <Internal iDVD Error During Last Action. This is not a movie.> If I try and drag the movie into a slideshow or movie box I get <Unsupported File Type: Unknown Format> I get the black and yellow striped broken chain icon and still no sound.
I looked at the console, and found multiples of the following iDVD error messages:

  • IPhoto 9.6 Does Not Recognize .MOV files!!! - HELP!

Re: iphoto won’t import mov video
    in response to léonie
I just read the thread to which léonie pointed. (Thanks!)
In System>Library>Caches, I had a file named "com.apple.xpchelper.cache". That file showed a modification date of yesterday -- I don't know what changes this file. Quite likely it was the install of 10.9.5 that I did yesterday.
Now, I was lucky enough to have a clone of my system from 3-4 days ago. I copied the older (cloned) version of this file, which itself had a modification date of about a month ago - to the working system. (I first renamed the current "com.apple.xpchelper.cache" to be safe.)
Then, I restarted ... and everything works like before! All movies play, and I can import.
I am not sure at all why this happened or why the above has fixed things for me, but it seems it has!
I am very happy to have fixed this issue without having to do a system recovery, which always has hitches here and there, and takes a decent chunk of time no matter how "backed up" you are.

MOV is a wrapper that can contain many different codecs. The message you get is indicative of a distribution codec inside the MOV wrapper. You may need to convert the material to an editable codec before importing.

  • Lightroom (4.3) won't recognize the file type while importing from Canon 5d Mark iii

Anyone mind helping me trouble shoot why my Lightroom (4.3) won't recognize the file type of my Canon 5D Mark iii ?
I have seen this in a couple other threads but none of those suggestions worked for me. I am also a Mac user.

    Bomal9 wrote:

    The above contradicts with this:
    Bomal9 wrote:
I am downloading images through the Canon EOS Utility manager and have to import the photos in a folder into Lightroom.
So my reading of that is that you ARE importing Raw files from the 5D3 into Lightroom, but having to use a roundabout route to do so. Is that correct? If so, how are you trying to import when you "cannot import raw files into Lightroom", are you using a card reader or direct camera attachment? Have you tried both methods? And what happens when you do try?

  • QT won't play .mov files any more

After a complete system re-install, QT player won't play .mov files any more. It tells me, some components were missing. Hey, this is its own file format!
    MPG files run OK.
Thanks a lot for a good idea!
    Peter

What format are the videos that don't play.
WMV...Windowa Mwdi Videos you'll need the flip4mac component. Free trail:
    http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm
Other codecs, Perian and it's free:
    http://perian.org/
Flash videos like the one on youTube. Adobe Flash comonent and it's free.
    http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?promoid=DXLUJ
You should download all three and install. Remember to rebuild your Permission after install any or all of the above.

  • Itunes library too large and won't recognize all files, just new ones but

still shows the old ones and their location in the library. I was keeping the library on the 2TB external drive. It got too large. Now I want to put the music on one of the 1TB drives and just the videos on the 2TB drive. From my PC, I can watch everything.
I cannot download to an iPod or iTouch anything from the 2TB drive. When I hit max capacity, I temporarily started saving on one of my internal 2TB drives (space wh*re, I know)before I hit on what my solution would be, and now I can only download from that location. Why?
What can I do? I even tried switching the library location back, and it won't recognize anything. I'm screwed, and I have all this material... YEARS of collecting...
    Someone please help me...

To clarify, currently on the 2TB external drive are music and videos. I want to split them up and hopefully save some space - and maybe foresee problems in the future when I hit max capacity on the 1TB external, and think about a 4GB (not the best option I see at this time) or another 2 2TB drives.
Doesn't the Library file just save locations when iTunes closes down so everything should be OK? I mean, the prog can recognize everything, it just won't download to anything, even if I move from the external drive an older movie to the new drive, it refuses to "see" the movie so I can download it.

  • IMovie won't recognize certain 'File extensions' ??

    Hi,
can anyone help here. I use Handbrake to compress Movie files before I use Quicktime to 'export to web' option, then import to iMovie to then edit before submitting ti iTunes ( keeps the size down but still have good quality ). Anyway even though the files from Handbrake have either a .mov or .m4v extension iMovie won't recognize them, but if I then use QT export to web ( which in turn makes a folder with the new files inside ) which have the .m4v, iMovie will see it !!
    Any ideas please.
The compressed file under Handbrake is small but good quality ( 2.3Gb down to 178Mb ) but if I use QT it then becomes even bigger ( 539Mb ) !!!!!
    Steve

I'm new to Handbrake so could you tell me what do you mean by 'Don't include extraneous data tracks' ?
Most people use HandBrake to convert DVD content (usually multiplexed M2V video and AC3 audio) to iPhone, iPod, TV, iTunes/Front Row files for viewing and/or iMovie '08 compatible files for editing. Since DVD content usually contains chapter data and the default setting for Apple device presets like TV normally default to include the chapter track data and (in older versions) may default to include an extra AC3 "passthrough" audio track, the output from such conversions are not supported by iMovie '08. If this is true, then re-exporting the content as you described would remove the extraneous data and explain why the files are incompatible with iMovie '08 before export and compatible after.
However, you have not confirmed that the incoming files are, in fact, stored on DVDs or indicated which specific settings are being used for your HandBrake conversions. iMovie '08 is only "edit" compatible with files containing DV, AIC, Motion-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, and certain profiles of MPEG-4 or H,264 video compressed data. So there is always a secondary possibility here that you are selecting an incompatible form of output form HandBrake and then using the "Export for Web" option to accidentally convert the incompatible compression format to a compatible one since this option exports to H.264/AAC by default.
If you have a much better way of doing this I am all ears especially if it makes my life easier, I am on a steep learning curve here ( sending video podcasts to iTunes but in good quality ).
The normal approach would be to select the iPod preset within HandBrake (or within QT Pro, GarageBand, MPEG Streamclip, etc. if the source file is QT compatible) and convert directly to an iMovie '08 compatible file. The iPod preset would create a file equivalent to the "Desktop" (1500 Kbps) file created by the "Export for Web..." option but, as previously mentioned may contain a "chapter" track if you fail to turn it off. If you want a smaller output file, then all you have to do is reduce the target data rate in HandBrake. If you are currently editing the equivalent of the iPhone file (900 Kbps) using your current work flow, then reduce the target average bit rate to 900 or 1000 Kbps before exporting from HandBrake. Basically, this approach is faster since you do not have to export the data twice. On the other hand, it is a bit more complicated since you have to manually ensure any extraneous data tracks are de-selected and that the correct compressing preset/settings are selected.

  • Rescue and Recovery won't recognize backup files.

I have backup files on a usb drive, an ultrabay drive and the main hard drive and it won't recognize any of them. Anyone else have this problem?
    -M

    manusoft, welcome to the forum,
attach the usb drive and then check it's recognised in BIOS. While you're in BIOS ensure that you optical drive is set as first boot device and place the boot disc you created in the optical drive. Save your settings and restart.
The system will boot to the R&R on the disc and in theory you should be able to then install the image.
Consideration; on the systems you move this image to the service partions will probably be no longer functional. I say probably as I've never done this with W7.
    Hope this helps

  • Media Encoder suddenly won't recognize Quicktime files...

    Hi there...
I'm on a Mac, and out of the blue, Media Encoder suddenly doesn't recognize Quicktime .mov files.  It says this file format is not supported.  Which is weird, because it was supporting it just fine this morning!  Does anyone know what might be wrong or how to fix this?
    Thanks for your help!

Im having the same issue.  Were you able to resolve it?

  • Quicktime won't open Mov files

    Hi there,
I am trying to get files from work onto my home computer.
At work, we use Windows and Edius GrassValley (6?) to edit videos. I can convert the files to a Quicktime before I take them home and I've done this several times before.
But now it won't let me open the files in either Quicktime or iMovie. I'm not certain what I'm doing wrong, I don't believe anything has changed on my computer since the last time I brought home some files.
When I try to open them with Quicktime, it just says it's not a movie file even though the tag says it's a .mov and I converted the file to a quicktime file before putting it on my flash drive.
I'm currently running Mac OS 10.6.8, Quicktime 7.6.6 and iMovie 8.0.6 (I know, it's ancient!).
If any of you lovely people could at least point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

    Hello Niebby,
According to the description of the issue provided looks like some change has been done in your system. Most probably a change in the installed codecs. I would suggest you to check whether the required codecs are installed under the folder "/Library/QuickTime".
If reinstallation is needed you can check this post "QucikTime Codecs Installation" to get some details about how to proceed.
