My Final Cut has holes in it!

I just upgraded to Final Cut Pro 5.1 then to 5.1.2
When I ran 5.1.2 pieces of my application started disappearing. If I look up into my browser, I can see through where it should list my files. In there place is a "hole" that reveals my desktop.
When I drag content to my timline, I see holes in their place that show right through to my desktop as well. These are actually holes, because when I click in that space, Finder is activated. What could possibly be going on here? I am seriously confused and this is bugging the crap out of me.
Thank you all so much for you help.

close FCP -- drag the offending 'holier-than-thou' footage clip onto the QT icon, see if it plays okay, if it doesn't, see below. If it does, create a new FCP project, import the clip, insert into a new sequence see how that works...
If its a no-go.... it's time for a full erase and install... should do this every 6-9 months or so anyway!

  • Final Cut Pro X doesn't seem to recognize 120 fps

I hust bought a GoPro Hero 2 with the capability of shooting 120fps. When I upload the clip into my timeline it says that it can't recognize the format and prompts to 60 fps. Any thoughts on how to get the full 120 fps? Thanks

    Here is the link.
    http://gopro.com/3d-cineform-studio-software-download/
But Tim Wolsky is correct. If you set your project at 29.97 before you start editing the project and then drag the clips in, they will conform to 29.97 and be able to slow down. I also like it in Final Cut becasue it is preset to ramp up and down into slow motion. Meaning, if you only want part of your clip in slomo, you select the Range tool, highlight that section and slow it down. Final Cut has an algarithm that does a slight ramp down to slow mo, so it isn't jarring. Very cool.
The gopro software will allow you to slow it down to the appropriate frame rate then export it as the longer, full slow motion clip. It's more exact than final cut, becasue it doesn't work in percentage, but you do lose flexibilty.
I shot some footage the day I got the camera and slowed it down in Final Cut. I will upload and post it to the thread, if you are curious on the end result. It's just grainy, becasue it was dark and indoors, but you will get an idea of the smoothness of the effect.
    Hope this helps.

  • Final Cut Pro crashing

Final Cut Pro is now crashing randomly while I am working. This is a new problem, as final cut has always been quite reliable for me.
    Any suggestions??

    Welcome to the forums.
When FCP act up and starts doing things it normally wasn't (say, like random crashing), then it is time to trash the preferences. There is a handy application that does this for you called FCP Rescue.
Download it, open it and click TRASH. then open FCP.

  • 720p60 3:2 Pulldown to 720p24 in Final Cut?

We shot a feature film with a Panasonic Varicam at 24p and captured directly to a computer via HD-SDI through a BlackMagic Design Decklink HD Extreme using Apple's ProRes codec (looks fantastic by the way... for those interested there is definitely a visual difference between DVCProHD and ProRes when capturing from an uncompressed source). The transport mechanism was 720p60 because that's what the Varicam outputs, and Final Cut's capture doesn't pay any attention to the HD-SDI meta-data (if any exists) so the pulldown frames were not removed in the capture process.
So, now I have all of this 60p footage that has superfluous frames added in the 3:2 pulldown process of the camera. When we edit these clips within Final Cut in a 24fps timeline, about a fifth of our clips play back stuttered as they are dropping, or more accurately doubling, every other frame and ignoring those in-between. I've figured out the reason for this is because Final Cut has no clue what frame of the 3:2 sequence each clip begins with and thus thinks each clip begins on an A1 frame. In 4 out of 5 frame sequences, this is fine, as shown here:
    Normal telecine sequence:
AAA BB CCC DD EEE FF…
    Edit starts on first frame:
    AAABBCCCDDEEEFF
    ABCDEF
    Edit starts on second frame:
    AABBCCCDDEEEFF
    ABCDEF
    Edit starts on third frame:
    ABBCCCDDEEEFF
    ACCEE
    Edit starts on fourth frame:
    BBCCCDDEEEFFG
    BCDEFG
    Edit starts on fifth frame:
    BCCCDDEEEFFGGG
    BCDEFG
As such, we see a stuttering issue (which appears as 12fps... every other frame is ignored of the original footage) on all clips that begin with the 3rd A-frame because Final Cut reverses this pulldown automatically but assumes that the beginning of the clip is at the beginning of the sequence every time, when it's not. I had hoped that I could somehow change the starting pulldown frame within Final Cut but see no way to do this. Cinema Tools doesn't have any good tools for working with 60p original content, so I'm stuck here.
I downloaded and installed the Nattress Standards Conversion filters and have experimented with them but have not been successful at eradicating this problem entirely. It seems its conversion from 60p to 24p assumes 60 unique frames, not a 3:2 pulldown clip. This coupled with the fact that Final Cut has some flakiness with its handling of the pulldown in general leaves me seeking the best strategy for handling this from wise council, which I would absolutely this forum to be.
Thanks for any help in advance!

Alex, thanks for your help. I didn't notice one of the FCP settings for my camera had been changed. Funny how working at 2:45 a.m. can sneak up on your brain.
    Thanks again & take care!

  • Final Cut doesn't work with Yosemite!!?

Hi there, anyone who could help me with this problem would be greatly praised, as I am really inexperienced with tech and stuff because I'm only 15 and I made maybe a not-so-great decision
So, I bought a 2010 iMac off craigslist which had FCPX on it already (Final Cut is the software I use most often), and I had it on Mountain Lion, and it ran perfectly. However, I decided to upgrade to Yosemite, and now Final Cut has a line through it and when I click on it a message says "You can’t use this version of the application “Final Cut Pro” with this version of OS X" and there's no "update" button, only a button that says I have to buy it again (but I already bought it!!)
I emailed the person I bought it from asking for her Apple ID so I could look through the purchases and click "Install" or "Update" or whatever it says beside the FCPX button, but under Purchases I didn't find it, and when I emailed her back she said "Oh, I'm pretty sure when I bought it Final Cut Pro came installed on it already so I didn't have to use my Apple ID to buy it". So evidently I got it from her, in turn she got it from the one person who bought it, but I don't have this person's Apple ID so I can update it.
I'm really sorry if this does't make any sense, but I'm at my wits' end because I don't want to pay $300 for another copy of Final Cut! Maybe there is some way I can upgrade it, or failing that would it be possible to retain all my files yet downgrade back to Mountain Lion?
Any, I repeat ANY help would be appreciated!!

THe FCP license is not transferable. I cannot legally be sd on Craigslist or anywhere but from Apple through the App Store.
DOwnding grading the OS is difficult. First you need a back up of your existing drive that has the user informatiion. You then need another computer or drive that has Mountain Lion installed that you can boot from together with a ML installer. You can then boot off the drive, erase your Yosemite drive, and reinstall Mountain Lion.

  • Final cut pro 7 -follow behavior?

I noticed final cut has added the ability to change the speed of a clip in the timeline without disrupting the positions of other clips, but does anyone know if they added a timeline follow behavior?

but does anyone know if they added a timeline follow behavior?
    <
Not sure what that means. The term "behavior"more or less refers to feaures in Motion's interface. "Follow" might mean motion tracking or refer to something you are attempting to do when moving a project between machines.

  • Fonts display wrong in Final Cut Pro

One of the other editors in the office put together this piece and now I am making some changes to it on my machine. We're using the font "Baskerville" a common font that comes on the computer, and it is showing up correctly in the Font Book, but it is not showing up correctly in Final Cut Pro.
There should be other options like regular, bold, semiBold etc, but there's only bold, italic, and bold italic.
The other strange part is that when I first opened it on my computer it displayed wrong, and I tried reinstalling the fonts, and then it worked fine. I tried reinstalling the font again but it didn't help. I also tried restarting and that didn't help either. I checked in the Library > Fonts folder as well as the fonts folder under my user and the fonts match.
Any suggestions as to what I could do?

As far as I remember, Final Cut has always had this issue....
I believe it has something to do with Final Cut only reading True Type (not Post script) fonts.
That's why I only use Text for simple things like legals. For all other text uses, I use Photoshop...

  • What's so good about Final Cut Pro?

Hi everyone, I am totally new to Macs, switching over from the PC. And so far, I have to say that I honestly enjoy the Macs a lot more than the PC's. With that being said, my wife's friend was telling us that we should invest in Adobe Photoshop and Final Cut Pro. The problem is we know nothing about the two programs other than photoshop is obviously working with photos and final Cut has something to do with movies.
So can someone please tell us whats so good about these two programs. And if we were to buy them, is there some sites that offer good tutorials to learn how to operate each of them?

A quick tour of Final Cut Pro can be found here:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/
    and Final Cut Express here:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress/tutorials/
There are paid tutorials found at Lynda.com. And a smattering found ALL OVER THE PLACE...some on the Creative Cow:
    http://library.creativecow.net/tutorials/applefinalcutpro
But those are advanced ones for people already familiar with FCP. The ones on Lynda.com are for beginners through experts. And there are books:

    And a REALLY good one:

  • Similar tool to Final Cut's 3-Way CC Hue Match?

Trying to match up some different video shots in AE. Final Cut has a speedy tool in their 3-Way Color Corrector. It's called Match Hue.
You eyedrop a color in your correctly exposed shot. It then loads up an eyedropper in the lift, gamma, or gain wheel. Use that new eyedropper to select the same color in your bad shot and it automatically shifts all three wheels to match the your good shot. It's not perfect, but it usually gets a shot 90% there with a couple clicks.

Color Finesse (which was automatically installed into After Effects CS3/CS4) has its Match Color function.
It works differently than FCP's (or Photoshop's, or...) so don't get frustrated right away. You can also select the color model for matching (RGB, HSL, etc.). Try each to see what works best for your specific task.
Match Color adjusts CF's regular color correction controls, so you can manually fine-tune the results after the initial button press.
Color matching is a difficult problem, not because figuring out how to turn one color into another is all that difficult, but because of the effect on all the other things in the scene which are equally affected by the color change.

  • Do your project files save when you update/reinstall Final Cut Pro X?

Final Cut has recently started to act up when it comes to sharing. It is only allowing Master Files while any other destination either freezes or stops itself after 5 minutes
I realize that a simple reinstall will probably fix it but will my current projects still be there?
Do I have to copy them on a back up folder or drive?
Same questions if it's just an update
    Thanks in advance

The Libraries, Projects and Events are all kept separately from the FCP X app so you can do whatever you want with the app and your work will be untouched.
Trash FCP X properly with this free app
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcsremover/
"Updates" are in fact complete reinstallations  .  .  .  the whole app is completely replaced  .  .  .  .  no messing about adding bits here and there as in the old days.

  • Final cut x projects not loading?

Okay so i'm using final cut pro x 10.0.5 and final cut has been running fine, but the last two projects i've worked on has stopped loading.
Basicaly when i open up final cut with the projects in the correct place, final cut will hang loading it up and will just stay on this screen.
This is really annoying as i need to get these projects working soon for a deadline!
    Answers appreciated!

No upgrading were done durign that time. the version were and still is 1.0.0.1.
I tried the moving trick like explained in another thread here.
I moved the files within the same SSD of my Mac.
I tried to run the projects that i backed up on my External drive (not SSD)
Pojects there, are all in the root of the external drive. No difference. Same story. No Luck.

  • My final cut pro DVD making problem

Hi, for some unknown reason, my final cut has stopped making DVD files when I give it that instruction. The file it makes will not play without quick time and is no use in a DVD player. Any ideas on how I make it return to making a DVD friendly file.

It sounds like you may be making a disk image. (Output Device>Hard Drive). Is that what you're doing?

  • Final Cut acting strange after update

I have a recently purchased Mac pro six-core with Mountain Lion OS.
I've installed Final Cut Pro version 6.06 along with a Kona 3 card. All was fine with Final
Cut until last week when I added RAM (real apple ram from the apple store) and did a
software update that included a OS update. Since then Final Cut has been acting very strange.
First I was getting messages that FCP didn't see the Kona card although it was still seeing video input when I opened the capture window. I re-seated the card and the RAM and ran disk utility and eventually the error messages went away. but when I open the capture window and try to capture a five minute segment from a digibeta deck using marked ins & outs the record stops a couple minutes in. It will cue to a timecode but the capture out point seems to be ignored.
I thought maybe it was a PRAM issue so I zapped the pram, at least I think I did-following the
instructions and hearing the 2 startup chimes, also the SMC. and still the same behavior.
The FCP setup has access to HD & SD formats through a run to the production floor, but these
record attempts were done using a digibeta deck setup in the same room with the same setup that's been rock solid up until now. Just wondering if any other Final Cut users have had any similar issues or if anyone has any insight or advise on what's causing this.
    Thanks,
    DB

You must update your Kona drivers to match the version of OSX.
Check with the AJA website to download and install the proper ones.

  • Final Cut Studio 3 with 10.6.5+

    Hello everyone,
A while back when 10.6.5 was released, I installed the update and since then my Final Cut has not been showing the colours properly in the viewer and timeline. Everything is like 5 stops under exposed and contrasty to the original footage. It plays fine in Quicktime 7 & X. But as soon as it hit's any of the the Final Cut Studio application, the rushes are way underexposed and are really contrasty. (I've posted some images below.)
Every time Apple brought out a new OS update I installed it to see if they had fixed this but I have had no luck to this date with 10.6.7. So what I've been doing is downgrading to 10.6.4 where Final Cut runs fine.
I'm running a MacPro Nehalem 2009 (4 core) and Final Cut Studio 3 on the latest update.
If anyone is able to help me with this problem then that would be fantastic!!!
Image below is Final Cut Pro on 10.6.7 OS
Image above is an exported version of the clip from Final Cut with 10.6.4.

This is indeed a weird issue.
The thing is now that I turned my mac off and came back to it, I played around with the display profiles (in system preferences) and went back to the original profile. It then suddenly fixed the gamma issue to how it should be in FCP7.
I'm not understanding to how it's fixed itself as it doesn't make sense to why it played correctly in quicktime but not in the Final Cut Studio Apps, but I'm very happy indeed, saving me time to downgrade again. I can also explore the MacAppStore...
What do you recommend as the best display profile to select in the System Preferences?
    Cheers everyone.
