My final step is failing (2 wireless routers with powerlines between)

Hello...
I'm running two WRT54GS routers two PLK200 powerline adapters.
What I'm trying to do is extend my network range with powerlines and then install the other router to allow internet access and file sharing.
So far so good... my modem is up and running and my first WRT54GS is up and running.... I then installed and setup the powerlines... good there as well.  When I connect my PC directly to the extended powerline I have net access... but when I attach my other WRT54GS I get no access.  Inside the router settings, the router can ID my cable internet provider... but it doesn't give any internet access.
I'm not a guru when it comes to networks so I'm assuming there are some IP/DNS type settings I need to change in my far router... or internet router... or both.
Any tips will be very appreciated,
thanks!!

Oh, and also wondering about possible suggestions... when I tested ping through the powerlines it was around 130ms.... kinda high.  Is there any way to reduce this... or would doing an extended wireless network without the powerlines be faster/better??
I'll be doing internet gaming on both ends of the network so ping is a little important... I'll also be sharing videos between both ends... as well as HD content.
any thoughts on this as well?... thanks.

  • Need help configuring: 2 wireless routers with 2 different SSID's on one network

    Hello everyone:
I've been reading around on the forum trying to find the answer to this question, but have not found any clear cut answer that satisfies all my requirements.  A more in-depth explanatiion.
I have 1 IP address coming in via cable modem.  I want to configure two wireless routers (one secured with WPA-TKIP, and one unsecured--a "guest network" if you will) each with different SSID's.  The secured network would be for my server, home PC's, IP webcams, DynDNS updating; while having an unsecured wireless router that friends and family can access.  Ideally, I do not want anyone who accesses the unsecured wireless router to be able to get access into my secured network.
Can someone please tell me if this is possible.  I think it is based on some posts I have already seen, but specific details about how to do it would be appreciated.  Additionally, my DynDNS has to still be able to update with my ISP's IP so that I can access my server and home webcams.
    EQUIPMENT
    2 - WRT54G
    1 - EZXS55W
    1 - WVC200
    1 - WVC54GC
(all of my stuff --webcam, server, dyndns, etc -- is working currently on my secured network. I just need to add the unsecured network)
I know this is a lot, but I would appreciate any help.  THANKS.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You must have the main WRT54G router connected to the modem. Set up the secured wireless network on the main router. Connect all your wireless computers or devices to the main secured wireless network.
Let's consider the IP address of the main router is 192.168.1.1.
Now connect only one computer to the Port 1 on second wireless router.
Open the setup page of the second wireless router. Change the wireless settings, SSID, unsecured.
Change the IP address of the second router to 192.168.2.1. Save the settings.
Connect the cable from the Ethernet port on the main router to the Internet port on second wireless router.
Power cycle the second wireless router.
Now the guest computers connected to the second wireless unsecured wireless network will be able to access the Internet only. They will not able to see the computers or devices connected to the first wireless router.

  • Compatible wireless routers with AT&T Uverse

Hi, I am presently stuck with the Motorola NVG router which does not support 5GHz wireless, 1 Gbps ethernet, 802.11ac, or (and probably the one thing you can't work around) configurable QoS- stadnard features for modern wireless routers. I was wondering if it was possible to replace my current modem which is clearly selectected to be the cheapest thing possible that barely does the job with a device with those features that would still work with my U-Verse internet connection as well as my U-Verse TV PVR. I am not talking about a second router to create a DMZ or bridgeing the network, I am talking about a complete replacement of this distasteful hardware that we are issed. My inter-LAN performance is terrible with the limited 20Mbps DL/1.5Mbps UL in my building, I need to employ QoS so that I can make use of these incredibly limited connections. Are there any options?

  • Wireless Routers With PCMCIA Slot

Does Linksys make any wireless routers beside the WRT543G-ST that have a slot for a PCMCIA Card?

I think dibbler is right because I do not recall ever seeing one with the PCMCIA slot.  Although it would be cool if they did that to support some of the wireless broad band cards that are available now.  That would be a awesome security measure to keep your teenage kids from getting on-line after hours or when you are not home to monitor them.  Simply take the card out and take it with you.

  • Multiple wireless routers with Macintosh OSX - Does not work

I work for Spokane Public Library system as an IT Specialist. At all of our branches, we use multiple WRT54G wireless devices to serve our patrons. We are having notable trouble with Macintosh clients who can get connected to the wireless network but cannot obtain a DHCP address and thus cannot surf the web. We have the WRT54G devices configured with unique SSID's and no wireless protection; basically an open network.
Will having both of the WRT54G's set to the same channel pose a problem? Do Macs on OSX have an issue with the Linksys implementation of DHCP that you know of?
We have verified this problem at all branches; including the use of my laptop which is a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.4.10.
There are other posts on this forum with similar issues and no responses.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

YES! My own resolution... It turns out that it WAS A LINKSYS COMPATIBILITY ISSUE. Updating the WRT54G firmware to version 1.02.2 made it all work great. There was a fix for DHCP in the 1.02.2 version.
This is for both version 5 and 6 of the WRT54G.

  • Share internet with a neighbour (2 wireless routers with switch?)

    Hi All,
I want to ask for your help, if there are better options for sharing Internet:
    Today:
The Internet is today shared like this: cable->modem->1. WRT320N router-> 2. WRT320N router (LAN port to LAN port).
It is working pretty OK but as the first router (connected to the Internet) is not in my house I can not restart it if needed (my neighbour is not always at home...)
    Preferred solution
I want to connect both routers to the internet separately, means both routers are connected direct to the Internet and not thru each other.
    Solution?
My idea is to connect the Internet to a switch and connect the two routers directly to the switch. In this case I guess the routers are directly connected to the Internet, or?
Should I use the LAN to LAN ports in this case as well or LAN to WAN?
The routers should also in this case have 2 different IP adresses?
Can DHCP be enabled on both routers?
Can I use ALL functions on both routers?
Thanks if you share your ideas.
    Regs,
    ZZs

Whether this works or not depends on your ISP. Most ISP only allow you to have a single active internet connection through a single modem/line. Thus, before you try this I would check with your ISP how many devices you are allowed to connect directly to the internet connection. If it's only one then you have to buy another internet contract for the second connection.
If you ISP allows this the basic setup would be:
    1. modem connects to ethernet switch.
    2. WAN ports of both routers connect to the ethernet switch.
Each router will have a different public IP address and are configured the same on the internet connection (i.e. probably DHCP). You enable the DHCP server on both routers. You can use all internet related functions on both routers (e.g. access restrictions, ddns, etc.).

  • Does Linksys even HAVE wireless routers w/VoIP-FXO capabilities anymore?

For the past year and a half, I've used a SPA3102 with Broadvoice. It was brutally hard to get working (mostly due to Broadvoice's awful instructions), but once I got it set up, it worked flawlessly. At least, until the bolt of lightning destroyed it on Sunday (along with the PLE-200 powerline ethernet adapter it was connected to).
Anyway, I need a new VoIP router. All things otherwise equal, I'd just as soon replace it with something that has similar capabilities, but can serve as my wireless gateway too. As far as VoIP capabilities go, it needs to satisfy two requirements:
    1) Has a modular jack that a normal phone can be plugged into, and that looks (to the phone) just like a normal signal from the phone company. I believe this is a FXO port, but I can never keep FXO and FXS straight.
    2) Can work with ANY VoIP provider who supports SIP, h.323, and/or IAX. It only needs to support one of the three, but by extension this means it can't be locked to a single company.
Capability-wise, I can live without 802.11N, but I'd classify "G" as fairly non-negotiable. A removable antenna is fairly important.
Do any of Linksys' current VoIP routers with wireless capabilities meet these requirements? Do they even HAVE any current VoIP routers with wireless capabilities? I remember ~1-2 years ago, you could buy wireless routers with VoIP capabilities and a phone jack or two on the rear at stores like Best Buy... now, you can't even find references to them on the sites for Linksys & their competitors. The models you can find online at Amazon & Newegg are all models from 2-3 years ago. It's like everyone just decided to quit making routers with FXO (FXS?) ports on them for some weird, unknown reason...

Update... assuming it doesn't have some fatal flaw (locked to some specific provider, or dysfunctional in some important way), the WRP400 looks like exactly what I want. Unfortunately, there's more info about it available in the description at Amazon than there is on Linksys' own website. Has anyone tried using it with arbitrary NON-Skype/Vonage VoIP service? Is there any ironclad way (UPC, perhaps?) to identify which ones are provider-locked (if any), and which ones aren't?
By the way, if I sound paranoid about carrier-locking, it's because ~2 years ago I ended up in a HUGE fight with a certain computer store that was selling white-boxed remanufactured WRTP54G wireless routers. Basically, they were locked to Vonage, the box and label only said they were "WRTP54G wireless VoIP routers" & said nothing about being locked. The store's argument was that their sales policy was "no refunds." My argument was that they defrauded me by selling a doorstop that couldn't be used for its advertised purpose. I finally got a refund after calling Mastercard in front of the manager to do a chargeback (nothing puts the fear of ${deity} into store managers like the "C" word), but I'd kind of like to avoid having it happen again.

  • Wireless Routers w/USB

    Hi All!
I need to purchase a wireless router, and I'm looking for one with a USB port so that I can print wirelessly too. Aside from the Airport Extreme Base Station...are there any other routers out there that you've used and liked? Or perhaps heard about?
    Thanks!

There are extremely few. Among the group, only the printer port on the Airport Extreme Base Station allows easy configuration using the manufacturer-supplied printer drivers for OS X. All other non-Apple wireless routers with a built in print server require you to set up printing using the third-party printer drivers Gimp-Print or HPIJS. My suggestion - paying the $199 cost of an Airport Extreme Base Station is well worth it in terms of grief you will save yourself if you really badly need wireless printing.

  • How do I use a Verizon PC Wireless card with my iMAC Intel Core desktop?

Help! Bought a Kyocera KPC650 Wireless PC Card for Verizon wireless internet. Works fine w/ laptop because it has a slot. How do I configure my iMAC desktop to accept this card? Is there an external USB adapter? Or do I have to get one installed internally? Which adapter works with OX 10.4?
I've seen the Quatech U132 online. Will that work? Its $192!! As is the Sewell adapter too. ($209)
Any ideas? I want to get off SBCYahoo DSL and their router because our DSL line is damaged in our complex and no one is fixing it!
    Thanks in advance.

What protocol is Verizon using that is not compatible with the Airport Extreme built into your iMac? I have used Apple's Airport Extreme with a lot of different wireless routers with zero problems as all conform to either 802.11b or 802.11g standard both of which are supported by the built in Airport Extreme.

  • Need a new wireless router with switching

I would like to purchase a new wireless router with 4 port switch. I have an Intel iMac with 2 pc's and have spent hours trying to configure my existing Linksys router to work properly and need to make a change. I have not been able to use iChat with Powerbook users and have had other problems as well and have given up...
The recommended router list on the iChat website does not specifically mention wireless routers with 4 port switching...
Does anyone have any suggestions for a router which is easy to use and configure?
    Thanks,
    cj

    Hi Herpestes,
If you mean which method of opening the ports should you use for those computers it will be the UPnP setting found in the Adminstarion tab
Log on to the Linksys by typing 192.168.1.1 into a web browser
Type admin as User ID and Password.
    Go to Administration
    Enable UPnP

  • Creation of WDS fails on final step - unable to update settings

    Hey Ya'll -
I've setup my WDS several times in the past and it's always worked flawlessly. For whatever reason, it quit working recently, and I decided to do a hard reset on my routers and re-create the WDS. I have two Airport Extreme Base Stations.
I've followed the instructions for creating a WDS to the letter. It does everything exactly right until the final step ... after it says "WDS created succesfully" - I click OK, and it says:
    1) rejoining this base station's network
    2) writing base station configuration ...
It hangs up here, and after about 5 minutes, it finally unlocks (spinning colored beach ball) and says "the airport admin utility was unable to update the settings of the selected base station".
Both base stations are in range right here on my desk. I've tried this 4 times now, and it crashes in the same place everytime.
If I run Airport Admin Utility on each router separately, to change the password, rename the router, etc., it connects easily, writes the configuration, and exits properly. I've done several tests (changing the name of the router, mostly) and I've even tried doing the manual WDS creation, but it does not work.
I have 10.4.3 with Apple Base Station V5.6 and Apple Airport Admin Utility Version 4.2.
    Help!~?
    Thanks,
    FRED

    I would suggest going to
    https://helpx.adobe.com/support.html
and jumping through whatever hoops are needed to get to the CHAT capability, then initiating an online chat with an Adobe Support person. You will end up speaking with someone in India, but I've had strange problems such as yours solved several times this way. You need to be patient, as it's not a "quick" process, but it should get you to where you need to go.
    Good luck.

  • Will Linksys wireless routers be updated to the final 802.11n spec when its finished?

Will Linksys wireless routers be updated to the final 802.11n spec when its finished? I read that most can be updated to the final spec with a firmware update.

I can't see why they wouldn't be. There'd be a whole lot of people upset if they didn't...

  • How do you erase and reinstall a hard drive without a disc? I bought this mac book pro under a year ago and am pretty sure i downloaded mountain lion from the app store. Basically Im having startup issues and this is the final step Ive reached

when I start my laptop it loads a third of the way and shuts down automaticallyI've tried to safe boot, repairing discs and clearing RAM but nothing has worked. basically I've come to the final step of having to a erase my hard drive and reinstall mountain lion however Apple support suggest that I install from a disc however I installed mountain lion from the App Store. can anyone help me go about this?

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
