My finder is not opening at all. Can't see desktop either.

My Finder stopped working. It won't open a new window, create folders on desktop, or even let me see the desktop. I don't know what could have caused it, but it's annoying. I can access finder from different users on my computer, but the account that is not working is where everything I am is. I've relaunched, restarted, and created new users. But it's still not working. Help?

You have a in-user account issue, likely with one of the files the Finder uses and/or a user account permissions issue.
Do #6 here and the #12 and #13 OnyX steps, other steps as required.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
You might have to do a #17, to grab the files out of that account using another admin account, then delete and recreate the problem account and return files.

  • System memory show 0KB available. Finder will not open. How can I get access to files in order to delete them without using finder?

My friend is running OS X Yosemite. Her kid used up all the memory on minecraft/word of warcraft files. Now no app will open including Finder to even access files for deletion. Is there a way to access any apps/files to clear space without using finder?

    Step 1
The first step is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
You might be able to run in safe mode even though you can't run normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.

I have a macbook pro version 10.7.5 and my mailbox will not open at all and comes up with a quit message even though it is not open. how can i get into my account. it works on my iPhone and i have internet and all other functions working on my computer

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports (not "Diagnostic and Usage Messages") for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. I know the report is long. Please post all of it anyway.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • TS1717 Started a software update this morning which didn't work.  Now Itunes will not open at all.  I get the following message."The program can't state becasue MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer."

Started a Itunes software update this morning which didn't work.  Now Itunes will not open at all.  I get the following message."The program can't state becasue MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer."

There are a couple of options that I know of to fix the issue.
One is listed in this thread - https://discussions.apple.com/message/24606478#24606478 - and involves uninstalling iTunes and related components and then re-installing iTunes.  You will need to read the instructions in the thread to see the correct uninstall order.
Second option is use System Restore to set your system back to a date prior to the iTunes update.  I did this before finding the thread mentioned above.
Not sure exactly what the problem is but I know, after a search, that MSVCR80.dll was indeed already installed on my computer.

First, quit "Dropbox" and see whether there's an improvement.
Finder crashes are often caused by "Google Drive." If it's installed, I suggest you first check for an update. If that doesn't solve the problem, remove it according to the developer's instructions. You may need to start the computer in safe mode to do so. Back up all data before making any changes.
If you use Google Drive and don't want to remove it, then try deselecting the option in its preferences to "show status icons." According to reports, that may be enough to stop the crashing.
Similar cloud-data clients such as "Dolly Drive," "iDrive," "Open Drive," "Transporter Desktop," and others can cause the same problem.

Thank you for responding.  Nothing actually worked!  After reading the posts online, I called Apple.  They indicated they have seen problems with some software after their upgrades.  The technician was able to fix the problem on my computer remotely, but I have no clue what he did!  But, it was definitely related to their recent upgrade to my computer.

  • I am having difficulty opening my iPhoto on my macbook. Every time I try to access it, it freezes or the application will just not open at all. What can I do to open it successfully?

I am having difficulty opening my iPhoto on my macbook. Every time I try to access it, it freezes or the application will just not open at all. What can I do to open it successfully?

Select iPhoto in the Applications folder the type Command+i to bring up its Info window.  That will tell you what version it is.
As a first fix attempt do the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • I've used FF for years, today it will not open at all on same computer can't sign in bec when I registered Mozilla didn't send me confirmation email I used it on this am.

I added a few add-ons yesterday to FF (I'm on current version). No problem. FF opened normally today until I added a new "user" to my laptop. After that, FF does not open at all, even from my original user account, which is the administrator. I don't think it was the add-ons, but I'm not sure. I deleted the new user account, turned the computer off/on again, rebooted (numerous times) and still FF will not open for me. The FF file is still in the computer (program list), and I still have the icons and it's in the tray. I have a Dell Studio, only 1-1/2 years old, use FF exclusively as my default browser.

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Itunes will not open at all

    hey guys,
ever since I've reinstalled my pc with windows xp pro sp3, my itunes will not open at all.
every time i click on itunes.exe it does not do anything. It does give me the hourglass icon as if my pc is working on it. but then it disappears without any itunes response.
to fix this issue, I have tried any possible method that i could find on the internet. even called the support center but they were not able to help me either.
I have tried to reinstall itunes *(no effect)*
did something with the cryptographic something in the administrative tools menu *(no effect)*
I have deleted the itunes installer cache *(no effect)*
I installed any older versions,( btw 7 does not work either)but after updating it *(no effect)*
itunes 6 does work; but since i have an iphone it is completely useless for me. so *(no effect)*
the strange thing is that itunes.exe does appear in the "processes" tab in task manager, but it does not show in the "applications" tab.
and every time I shut down my pc, I get the windows message that itunes is shutting down.
If you have any other suggestions, please be so kind help me.
this is driving me nuts. It's been going on for two months now.
    Kind regards,

I am not sure if I have this right from all those posts.
When you try to start iTunes, there is no error message and you can see iTunes.exe persisting on the processes tab of the task manager.
If that is your probelm it is commonly do to a problem with cryptographic services.
Before looking into that there is a quick thing to try:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1776?viewlocale=en_US
If that's not it, work carefully through *method 4* in the following article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798
Make a careful note of any error messages you get, this is important. post back the names of any dlls mentioned in error messages.
If you don't get any error messages try starting iTunes.

  • My itunes not opening at all

My itunes is not opening at all. As a result I can not communicate with my ipod. My Windows Media Player is running well and all the other programs on my computer are fine. If I try to open it, it says 'itunes has encountered a problem and is closing'. It will not even show a fragment of the itunes page. If I try to open Quick time , it says 'an exception occured while trying to run shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL'. I have tried to uninstal itunes or re-instal it and it refuse after going 70% of the way. Also Quick Time refuses to unistal.

    Hope

hmmm...i see a few potential problems. First, Try downloading the Quicktime standalone player and prior to do this, TURN OFF your Antivirus and Spyware programs. Find the Quicktime Standalone player here: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
If this just randomly happened one day where iTunes would not just open up, its very possible your PC has been infested by the Qoologic adware program that causes this errorless crash of iTunes. There is a free program that has been catching it. Find it here: http://www.ewido.net/en/
    Post back with your progress.

  • Nothing works - no icons on desktop, finder will not open, etc.

I am running OS 10.4.7, and suddenly, nothing works. Finder will not open. iTunes will not open. Trash will not open. iPhoto will not open, etc. The only programs that seem to open are Safari and Mail (though Safari crashes if I try to watch any video, as Quicktime will not open). Moreover, all of the icons on the desktop have vanished, along with the info bar up top. Spotlight will not open either. I can't access the hard drive directory. Any suggestions? Or, should I just take it into the shop?
    Thanks.

Hi, WillhelminBend. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1. What changes did you make to your Mac, if any, before this problem arose? If the problem arose after making a change, it's possible the change is the cause.

  • Firfox Does not open at all not even Profile Manager.

Ok so as of i believ yesterday, Firefox does not open. I can click on the Firefox icon a million times and in my taskmanager it will show all the instances of firefox running, however, it does not open and i am forced to use IE (which i hate). I have looked through the trouble shooting guide and was recommended to create a new profile, and when i try to open the profile manager, it does the same thing, shows up in task manager but does not open the Profile Manager.
Now i have uninstalled Firefox TWICE and even selected the checkmark which deleted all the setting and bookmarks the second time to see if that helped. But it does the same thing.
Please HELP ME!! i can't express how mucvh i hate IE and will die if i have to continue using it. THANKS FOR EVERYTHING!

    Solved. (or resolved)
G'day. I'm visiting on my Firefox browser - Yay. Thought I'd update this. After I wrote this last night, (with IE browser) the confirmation e-mail's link wouldn't even work.
I deleted the offending program. I used CC Cleaner to run through the computer. Still no go. I went to bed with AVG scanning everything.
I woke to find AVG had done it's work, finding 2 problems and fixed. Still no access to mozilla.
I shut down whole computer (intending to start in safe mode). Got distracted and missed the bootup prompt. Logged on anyway, so I'd have something to tell the 'help' line here.
Woo hoo! I must have done something right, because here I am, via the link in last night's email.
The offending program was via 'Ancestry . com'. I'm off to tell them now.
I'm hoping this might assist someone else. Take care - Jo
