My finder is unresponsive

For the past few days, my finder has been unresponsive. I can't upload, search or open any file. I also can't connect to any wifi other than the ones recognized by by macbook. Nor can I see how much battery is left. I want to reformat my macbook but want to save my files before doing so to a hard drive/elsewhere. Will iCloud still work with an unresponsive finder?

I have the same machine - and the same problem.

  • FINDER becomes UNRESPONSIVE during AppleScript runs in 10.6.5

Has anyone experiences the Finder becoming unresponsive when running a script in Snow Leopard? We have scripts that push PDFs to an Apple Server (10.4) via SMB or AFP and while the script does run fine- during the last minute of it running, the Finder and the AppleScript become unresponsive for 30-60 sec or so then snap back and finish their job.
This was not happening in Leopard (so they say) to the same Tiger Server
Any Ideas what we may be experiencing? A suggested Fix? is 10.6.7 going to resolve this issue with Slow SMB connections?

I have the exact same problem on two of my imacs, both have the 10.6.5 update and have been having networking problems since November of last year. I have pinged both IP addresses successfully so they are active.I have also tweaked the proxy settings for our network, trying all combinations, to no avail.
I have at least succeeded in getting one of the macs to connect to email and Safari but the connection in Safari times out after about 10 minutes and then hangs and you have to force quit. Thereafter only a reboot will restore Safari.
The second imac is in a worse state, in that it does not connect up at all even though the network is active and IP has been successfully pinged.

Double tap Home button, delete Mail from multitask-bar.
Do a reset (Hold Sleep/Wake and Home buttons about 10 secs or more till Apple logo appears, ignore the Slide to Power Off that appears)
Note: You will not lose any data.

  • Why does the Yosemite Finder become unresponsive when moving a file within my USB Flash stick?

Why does the Yosemite Finder become unresponsive when moving a file within my USB Flash stick? I have to Relaunch the Finder to get it working again.
    Background / other symptoms:
The Flash drive in question has been formatted HFS.
I get no error messages, including on the Console, and no sound indicators.
I can copy files, using the Finder, from a hard-drive to the usb flash drive with no problem.
Finder copying on this stick works just fine on my other Mac.
I can move files within another (FAT32-formatted) USB flash drive.
The quirky USB HFS Flash drive works fine on my other Mac.
Outside of the Finder, I can use mv just fine to move the files on the HFS flash drive.
If the HFS-formatted Flash drive were faulty, I would at least expect some sort of error in the Console app, but perhaps not from the Finder.

  • HT203176 mountain lion, finder is unresponsive/times out

I am trying to help a friend who has a Mac Book Pro that is extremely slow (15 minutes to get to the sign in prompt) and completely unusable.
I am running into prblems trying to clean the system cache because the finder is unresponsiver to any attempts to open any folder or finder window. If I double click on a folder or the MacHD I will get the spinning beach ball for 1 to 2 minutes before it just gives up goes back to the regular arrow and the finder menu bar disapears until I click on the desktop somewhere.
I have managed to use the spotlight feature to open disk utility to run that and it did find several errors to repair (took 3 hours), and yet still having the same issues. I used fsdk -fy feature but it did not find any errors from the CMD+S boot up. I tried opening the system preferences to see if maybe it was a startup item causing the issue but it continuosly crashes out (comes up, closes, gives unexpected closed popup).
It is a late 2011 MBPro, 4GB of Ram, 750GB HD (only 80GB used) and is in emaculate condition (no scratches, dents, or blemishes on the casing or screen).
I tried using the CMD+R to boot into the recovery disk to just wipe it and start over, but it comes up with one of those European do not enter signs (circle with a line through it) and I am unable to get safari to connect to the internet without crashing out. Since I cannot open any folder or disk I can't even connect a usb thumb drive or firewire drive to attempt to get some other utilities to work on it.
Her Apple Care plan expired two months ago and I am unable to get assistance from 1-800-My-Apple.
PRAM resets, and an SMC reset... No joy. Can someone else offer any sugestions?

If this started happening without your having made any changes and without a warning of low disk space, then it's likely that the boot drive is failing, or that there's some other hardware fault. Back up all data immediately, then run the Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics.
Even if the test is negative, you should make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested more thoroughly.

  • Finder window unresponsive after a search on external drive.

    Hi guys,
I have an odd problem. I have an external HD full of music and whenever I want to play one, I just search for it in finder and drag&drop it to iTunes. However, I'm having issues with it on my new MacBook Air. Whenever I search the drive for files, they appear normally, but I can't drag them! Highlighing works OK, so does double-clicking or cmd+O, but I can't move them to a playlist. It's the same with any files, not just .mp3s - they cannot be dragged out of the finder window. Scrolling is also wonky, but moving between files using arrows works fine.
Please note that this works perfectly fine when searching the computer's HD.
Is this a glitch of some sort, or is the computer preventing me from doing it for some reason? Any explanation/fix? I'm running 10.9.3 with all the updates; the HD is a 1TB Transcend, ExFAT formatted.
    Thanks!

How much space do you have on the Air? Most Air users do not have the space to keep a big iTunes Library on the internal drive.
They would still be on one place on the external drive. When you get a new mp3 import into iTunes and it will be saved on the external drive.
I'm not a cross platform users so not sure what the issue is with copying the data.

  • GUI/Finder becoming unresponsive

I'm having a problem where I can't get the mouse-over actions to work. i.e. the dock won't pop up or go away (have to click at the bottom of the screen to get it to appear), the names of the applications don't come up as I move over them; up in menus, flyouts don't work at all unless I hold the mouse button down - all a change from a day ago.
My most recent system-altering actions were related to an install of Acrobat 7.0.7 Pro that stopped booting. I tried retrieving the app from Time Machine from a couple days back, when I know the app booted fine. No luck getting it to work. Decided it was time to upgrade anyhow, downloaded and installed Acrobat 8 Pro, which boots just fine - but the the GUI problems started.
    Any thoughts guys?

After completely reinstalling the system from a Time Machine backup made before the problem cropped up...I STILL had the problem.
Beginning to suspect hardware, I started troubleshooting be removing components. Well, it turns out the problem was my wireless mouse. It was apparently sending a button-down signal continuously. I replaced the mouse and all is fine again. I hope this helps someone in the future.

  • Can anyone ID this problem? Finder icon started bouncing, unresponsive, now Safe Mode reboot stops 1/3 in and shuts down iMac. Virus?

This started yesterday. I switch on the computer, go into my User account and the Finder icon was bouncing in the deck while a window flashed on about Restoring Windows though you could never click on it because...it kept flashing. The folders on my desktop disappeared so I went into a secondary user account and opened it to find a virus scan. That user account had no issue with the bouncing Finder icon. I downloaded ClamXav and ran it but that being a rarely used user account, it found nothing infected. I went back in in Safe Mode and was able to see my invisible files but the Finder being unresponsive, I could basically only look at them. Also, I couldn't activate ClamXav after downloading it in that user account. All it did was allow me to see my files.
This morning, while I switched on the computer the Safe Mode came on without me holding down the Shift key. Sadly, it didn't get past the third of the little progress bar before shutting down the computer. This happened trying to open either user accounts. I'm shut out. I'm so shocked this happened. I called the ISP and he said everything was normal at his end, naturally in spite of a lot of freezing and not allowing more than one device on wifi at a time. This is an upgraded Internet service after moving to a new place. Otherwise for the few moments it lights up to show me the two users at log in, nothing is visually wrong.
If this has ever happened to anyone, please enlighten me. I've called a Mac repair shop and expect to bring my iMac in. It's barely two years old. : (

  • OS 10.4.7. hangs up at user switching; finder unresponsive - need diagnosis

Need help troubleshooting following sequence of repeating events on my new MacBook:
    1) Attempt to bring up "fast user switching" and log in a second user results in the OS hanging up; 2nd user can't log in.
    2) Then try to log out first user. Can't complete logout process: finder becomes unresponsive.
    3) So "Force quit" finder. This goes OK, but the screen then goes to a blank blue desktop with an endless, endless spinning wheel. No log-in screen will appear and the only way out is to force-reboot the MacBook by holding down power button for 8 seconds.
At times, as well, apps will refuse to launch. just bounce in the dock. sometimes apps won't even bounce.
I feel these two sets of symptoms are related parts of ther same problem - the OS hanging up when I try to fast user switch or launch apps.
MacBook White   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   512 Mb RAM

First, try doubling the installed RAM amount. Then
do routine maintenance (daily, weekly, monthly),
    clear caches, repair permissions.
Thanks will try. what is path (boot drive/library/ ?????) to the caches most likely to be implicated ???

  • Unresponsive Finder then responsive, then unresponsive....

SL 6.0 and 6.0.1 both are extremely unresponsive for several minutes. Then I regain control for a few seconds and then loose it again. Sometimes the control regained is for a few minutes. The hard drive activity is great during the beach ball moments and suddenly stops when I regain control.
All apps are the latest. DiskWarrior and permissions have been repaired. Dioblotin was used to disable most start up items without success. Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks, Jim

Hi all. I'm new to the forums so forgive me if I'm barging in on your discussion but I have a related problem. My Mac Pro if behaving very strangely. When I command+I click on any file or folder my Finder becomes unresponsive and I get the beachball of doom! This is a recent development and nothing has changed in terms of the machines' setup. Also if I plug in any firewire or USB drive to the front or back ports I have to restart the machine before they become moounted and on that note my machine will not restart. I get to the blue screen with the cursor in the corner and that's where it hangs. Before this happened I used disk utility to check permission and I repaired those that were not correct, I verified the disk and it was fine. Please, please, please tell me that you can help or point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.

  • Slow start- finder unresponsive

I have started having isues with my 27" imac.  It does not get restarted very often and I can't tell you when the last time it was restarted before this week but this is what happens now:
First time or two I restarted it took 3 or 4 minutes to get to the desktop and when I did get to the desktop the finder was unresponsive for at least another 3-4 minutes.  It would finally start working normally.  I disabled all log in items and the time to get to the destop has improved but the unresponsive finder remains.
    I have:
booted to a back up (created with carbon copy cloner) and checked the hard drive with disk utility- all comes comes back good, by the way when I booted to the back up drive it too booted slowly and had the unresponsive finder for several minutes
ran apple hardware test and everything came back good
Is there a corrupted plst file or something?  any other suggestions?

If it will let you, can you open up Activity Monitor during this period and see what's hogging the CPU?
Although this in itself will use some CPU, maybe temporarily set AM as a login item. That way it'll open up as soon as it can.
    And check all these

  • Finder unresponsive even after reboot

    History:
I had an iMac G4 800 (OSX 4.11) connected to an Intel iMac (White Model OSX 7.5) via firewire 400 and had shared my internet from the intel mac to the G4 through the firewire as the G4 doesn't have wifi.
I had wanted to transfer files from the intel mac to the G4.
I proceeded to transfer files over the firewire.
all the files where being transferred to the desktop
One of the files was a movie, 2.3 gb in size.
When the process began to transfer the movie the Finder began creating multiple icons of the movie. In no time the desktop was filled with icons with this movie.
    Computer froze.
    What I've done:
After realizing that the computer was frozen I did a hard shutdown. Unplugged the firewire and restarted the computer.
Computer booted fine, but the finder was unresponsive.
Went into activity Monitor and saw that the Finder was not responding.
Did a force quit. Finder would quit no problem and restart, but after the restart of the finder it would resume the process that it was stuck in. None of the icons would show on the desktop. CPU usage was running at 60% and memory would increase slowly until all available was used ( I have 1GB of memory)
Did a hard shut down and left it over night, rebooted and no change.
Left computer on all day and night figured I'll let the computer do it's thing hoping it would resolve itself, that did not work.
Went into terminal and did a "killall Finder"
Reacted the same way as force quitting in activity monitor.
….. Now I'm at a lost… Never seen this happen before. It seems like the finder is stuck in a loop or process or something and it doesn't want to give it up.

As a near last resort, you could boot from the install  DVD and choose to archive & install
a new system folder, then update that to the last step (via Combo update) and see what
else isn't in the new folder that you need or want. Several of these would need to be fully
re-installed if not available, when third-party software; especially if they had key codes.
{A full system clone-copy on external FW enclosure would be a means to restore the Mac.
    Also that's a better way to make a backup since it would be a complete one of everything.}
Other terminal or command-line effort may have been able to restore use of the Finder.
However I'm not sufficiently experienced with accessing or changes via Terminal to offer
any suggestion. And the word 'terminal' can have more than one meaning, in this matter.
The manual code or processes available via Terminal or command-line are cryptic.
Hopefully someone such as BDAqua or Linc Davis, among others, may help there.
The use of the install-restore DVD to try 'repair' and 'repair disk permissions' may
also be worth a go; you need not reinstall a new system/folder to try these...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Finder hangs when accessing external drive

My finder hangs when accessing an external drive.
It is specific to a drive the I created on my TC disk.
That drive and TC work perfectly unless I mouint it and alter anything on that disk (I can read ok but writing causes a freeze.)
The writing that I do is always ok; if I trash or move something it always ends up where I wanted it after a restart.
    The process looks like:
I drag an item to the trash (or another directory) and the progress bar shows success down to 3 or 5 seconds and then it stops (curser becomes a spinning beach ball.)
I can hear the tone of a successful transfer if I wait a little while but the finder is unresponsive untill I restart.
Once restarted I can check the external disk and the file transer (to a directory or the trash) appears to have completed without corruption.
I have repaired drives and permissions all over the place with no results.
Can I just say that I tired of constant unnecessary updates that slow my computer, rearrange my settings and cause crashes and other problems that have to be researched and chased down through hours of online troubleshooting. I would love to have thoroughly tested software and hardware that just works without the hassle of having to constantly tweek my machine to get it to work consistantly.

Are you saying you have this problem only with one drive, not with others?

  • Problems with Finder/desktop after Security Update

    Hi,
My finder is unresponsive. It won't open. Also, my HD is not showing up on my desktop, so I don't really have access to anything that is not on my Dock. Plus, the top menu bar does not show up unless I am in a program (like Safari). My trash can is also not responsive (I can't open it, or empty it)
What is going on? I don't know what to do.
    IMac G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Thanks for your all help littleshoulders, but I managed to "accidently" fix things.
I was completely out of ideas so I just tried to do the Security Update again to see what would happen. Well, my computer went through the same process that it did the first time I did this update and after reboot everything was back to normal. How is that possible? Did the update just not install properly the first time? I have no idea, I'm just glad things are fixed.
