My firewall won't let me quit Word

I finally got a broadband connection but I've run into a little snag: I can't quit Word and I have to resort to force quitting. On the macoshints forum I learned that this could be caused by my firewall. According to the writer, "the microsoft database daemon checks on the local network to see if other copies of Office are in use w/ the same serial number. It should do this at startup and quit. If you have a firewall then you get a hanging spinning beachball of death." And so I turned off my firewall and lo and behold, the problem was solved. My question is, how do I get around this other than keeping the firewall off every time I use Word (a program I must confess I try to avoid whenever possible)?
I originally posted a similar question in the general Tiger usage forum, but now that I know what's going on, this seemed a better place.
Thanks in advance.

I have my machines configured to block port 3868 which I found to be the one used by MS Office for checking for copies of itself on the local network.
I don't have any problems. Hence I suspect that, with a default firewall configuration that blocks incoming requests but not outgoing ones, you might improve things by making sure port 3868 is blocked for both directions.

PS. I do have licenses for each of my machines but I don't like to have programs sending messages over my network that I don't know about!

Mountain Lion can't install but won't let me quit the installer! How can I get back to the desktop?

I was having the same problem with my iMac. Couldn't left click with the wireless mouse, i tried all the steps above to no avail. I then tried to use another mouse, this time bluetooth and still had the same problems. I decided to see if my trackpad, which sits in the corner of my desk and never gets used, and then i realize that my cat is lying on top of the trackpad which was causing my problem the whole time.
I hope your fix was as simple as mine.

Do you use your Vaio Update for updates, kingdom? If so, check in there to see if you're also up to date on your video card drivers and BIOS. (Your downloads page at Sony UK shows some updates for those there, so we'd better check on them too.)

  • IPhoto won't let me quit !

iPhoto6 has started freezing on me every time I try to quit. Whether I use the red button or Apple+Quit (iPhoto) nothing happens. Well, the red button get's dimmed, but nothing happens, not even the swirly colour timer. I then have to do a Force Quit and lose most of the changes I have made.
It was working fine until tonight. I created 4 folders and dragged all the Smart Albums, Albums, and Slideshows into them. I also deleted a number of slide shows (delete button). I also edited a number of Smart Album criteria and added another line. I do have a fairly large amount of stuff in iPhoto (the Originals folder thru Finder reports 49GB) but not sure why it is freezing up like this??

    Well that blows that theory...
Will iPhoto eventually close if left alone long enough?
When you quit iPhoto it will often take a moment to write out your latest changes to the library file. Now, in my case that is literally a moment. I note that when you force quit (and that's a good way to damage your library file btw) your changes haven't been saved.
    Some things to try:
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    If that doesn't help:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back. This process create a new library and leaves your old one untouched, so it won't make matters worse.

  • My garageband won't let my quit the application, what should I do?

The three circles in the corner, the green, orange are available to press but the red one is gray at the moment and wont let me exit garage band, it wont even let me force exit it.

Have you tried "Force Quit" from the -menu in the upper left corner of the screen?
If that does not work, open a Terminal window and enter the following line:
    killall GarageBand
If even that does not help, try variations of the "killall" command, as described here for Aperture: Just replace "Aperture" by "GarageBand".
If Aperture is unresponsive, how to quit?
What happened, before you could not quit GarageBand any longer?

  • Firewall won't let iTunes connect to Airport Express

I'm trying to get iTunes to recognize my remote speakers. If I disable the firewall, it works. I've tried various combinations of UDP and TCP ports though none works. Any ideas?
I've tried UDP port 5353 and TCP ports 192 and 5009 to no avail.

Ditto, same problem with MPB 15. I have a MPB 17 that connects no problem. The 15" I have to go to OTHER each time to connect.

    Hi..
Try deleting the cache associated wtih Safari.
Quit Safari.   Command + Optin + Esc if necessary.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar top of your screen click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:
    ~Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
    Click Go
Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
    Try Safari.
And since you are running Lion v10.7, if you haven't disabled the Lion resume feature, that can help the Safari cache issue.
    Open System Preferences > General
Deselect:  Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
    Restart your Mac.
