My firewire connection to the hard drive is no longer recognized

My external hard drive with firewire cable connection to the imac has been working fine for months. Suddenly got error message that firewire devices were not being recognized by the computer. I tried poweriing dowm computer and external drive and resetting PRAM but no response. Any suggestions welcome

If you look at your >SystemProfiler (option key)>Hardware>Firewire.
If Firewire is being recognized ie
FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed:    Up to 800 Mb/sec
I would suspect the ext. HD or the cable.
Rebooting will reset the Firewire port.

After last system update, my firewire external mobil disk hard drive is no longer recognized. Any solutions?
Why does MacOS go backwards... gets worse over time?

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work! I have had no trouble with any update Apple puts out (the Combo update is what I normally choose). Are you running 9.2 like your specs. say? You are in the Tiger forum, so I'll assume you haven't updated your Macs specs.
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours may be the 10.4.5 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
    Good Luck!
    Cheers!

  • Problem with the connection to the hard drive.

G5 Single core 1.8GHz stop working. I was told that there is a problem with the connection to the hard drive.
It boots but freezes after a few minutes and fans go full blast.....
Is this a logicboard problem, or something that can be fixed with a little work?

    Hi j hallow-
Whose diagnosis declared a bad connection?
Have you opened it up and looked inside? It may need to be cleaned out.

    - Transfer iTunes purchases:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
    newer copy
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup
Note that the iPod backup that iTunes makes does not included synced media like apps and music.

  • IMac won't Boot using FireWire connection on external Hard Drive?

    Hello,
I Have an iMac 24" 2.16ghz 3GB RAM with a 1Tb Western Digital external Hard Drive.
I'm running my iMac of an external Hard Drive as my internal drive is faulty. Currently this set up works best for me as i can 'piggy back' off the University's computers.
When i hit the option key on start up the computer doesn't 'see' the Hard Drive when it's connected via it's FireWire port. Using the USB port works fine.
I know the Hard Drive's FireWire connection works as i previously used it as a back up drive.
As i use Final Cut 7 as my main application working via USB isn't really a practical option..
Can anyone shed some light on what the issue might be?
    Many thanks in advance!
    Daniel

Try doing a SMC reset in additional to what Apple recommends in the following Apple Advice letter.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1151?viewlocale=en_US
    SMC RESET
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • My external hard drive is no longer recognized by my Mac

I have used Time Machine and a WD external hard drive to back up my computer for several years.  Now, when I connect the hard drive, the drive lights up as though it's working, but the connection does not appear on my Mac -- the external hard drive is not listed in Device (in Finder). Any suggestions?

power feed issues and data appearance/disappearance are both symptoms of the SATA bridge card,..arguably the most failing modern computer component made.
throwing more power to the drive wont fix that.
SATA bridge card as found inside all USB HD devices which has an extremely high failure rate.
Inside a USB hard drive, containing the HD and SATA card
Countless 1000s of good external hard drives are thrown away each year because the owner thought the HD was bad when it fact it was the SATA bridge card which had failed. This card is removed in a matter of mere second once an external USB HD is cracked open from its plastic casing to reveal the bare HD and the attached SATA card which attaches between the HD and the USB cable.
quick and easy option is to crack open the WD USB drive, and remove the SATA card, and put the WD drive into a new enclosure ($20)
HOWEVER, if its an OLD WD drive, the SATA interface is permanently attached to the HD and the OP is "out of luck".

  • Unable to connect to the hard drive connected to the airport extreme.

I have a new Aiport extreme base station and a usb hard drive is connected to it. But mac air is not finding it. Couldn't see it in the finder.
    Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, the AirPort cannot share out a drive formatted in either NTFS or ExFat. It must be in either HFS+ or FAT32. If the AirPort Utility can't recognize the drive, it can't be shared.

  • Can I connect a portable hard drive to an ipad 4 to play music?

I am buying an ipad 4 for my wife as a present. At the moment we both use PCs as well as iphones to play music which we store on a portable hard drive which can then be moved between our PCs (we have different music tastes so have different itunes libraries!). Is there a way of directly connecting up the hard drive to an ipad 4? It's a portable seagate with a usb cable - the connection at the hard drive end is something I don't recognise! It draws power from the PC.
    Thanks for any ideas.

Not unless you purchase a special Wi-Fi external drive that will work with an iPad. Seagate and Western Digital make such products.

  • How to copy catalog from external hard drive to computer hard drive to use smart previews when not connected to external hard drive?

I am very new to LR5. I have LR5 set up so that my catalog and photos are on an external hard drive. I found out that when not connected to the hard drive, LR5 cannot find my catalog, therefore, I cannot do any editing in smart previews unless connected to the external hard drive. How can I fix this issue so that I can edit photos without being connected to the external hard drive. Is there a way of copying the catalog off the hard drive on the computer hard drive or do I need to reestablish a new catalog using LR5? Does the catalog always need to be loaded on the hard drive? Thank you in advance.

Yes that is correct. The LR catalog must be on the computers internal drive. Then when you have Smart Previews enabled you can edit image without having the drive they are on connected. Then when you connect that drive the images will be updated.
Just COPY those 4 folders over to your internal drive to a folder called Lightroom Catalog that you create. Then Open LR and go to the File menu item and select Open Catalog. Browse to the folder you created called Lightroom Catalog and select the Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat file and click Open. Once Lightroom restarts open the preferences, Edit>Preferences, and on the General Tab in the Default Catalog section make sure "When starting up use this catalog:" area lists where you have copied those folders. Something like Macintosh HD/Wherever you created that folder/That folder name/Lightroom 5 catalog.lrcat.

  • My hard drive is no longer appearing

I just had a new hard drive installed in my mac book pro but now the Hard drive icon no longer appears in the top right corner, also when i insert a usb drive thay also do not appear. if i go to disk utility they are there and they are mounted but they are still not showing on my desk top.
Is there a function in need to turn on for these to appear.
    Thanks
    Adam

With Finder active, go to Finder Preferences (in the Finder menu) > General; in that screen, checkmark the items near the top for "Hard disks" and "Externa; disks". This should make them appear on the desktop, upper right side.
Also, in Finder Preferences > Sidebar, checkmark the same items in the Devices section. This should have them appear in the Sidebar in Finder (folder) windows.

There is another option if the Macbook will start up in Target Disk Mode.
Restart the computer while holding down the T key. If you see the firewire symbol moving around on the screen you can connect this one to another one in TDM. You will need a suitable cable to connect the two Macs.

I copied all my CD's onto a hard drive.  Can I transfer each CD from the hard drive to my iPhone either wirelessly or by direct connection?  Do I have to make a playlist for each cd and then transfer it to my iPhone?

When you buy your new iMac you will be able to have the installation process transfer all your applications, data (including music, pictures, documents, etc) and settings to your new computer. In the past that was done via Firewire. I'm not entirely sure of the process with the new iMacs that don't have firewire. I think it can be done via ethernet and probably via tha thunderbolt cord using a firewire adapter but you'll want to check that out.
With the your new computer properly connected to your old computer, the initial booting of the new computer will include the ability to move everything over.
If for some reason you don't want to do that (smart if you have some horrible software issue that is causing problems) you can connect your old computer to the new one and start it in Target Disk mode where it will be seen as a hard drive. You can then manually copy over all your music and import that into iTunes (and any other data you want).
Somebody here will surely point you to directions for connecting an older iMac with no Thunderbolt to a newer iMac with no Firewire.

G5, 2.7 using OSX10.4.11: I want to clone the hard drive. Instead of housing the new hard drive (during the cloning process) in an external case, could I simply install the new hard drive into an idle G5 that has no hard drive in it thus using the idle G5 as an elaborate external case? What cables would I use to connect the 2 computers? Ethernet?  USB?  Could I use the firewire cable that is normally used by my Apple camera (the camera that is an aluminum tube, I forget the name of that thing). The idle G5 is a 1.6 model, would that matter?  Thanks

I personally can think of two options.
    1. Mount the drive in which the copy of the first hard drive will go to inside of the 2.7gHZ G5's case. There is room for two hard drives in there. See Link for Help
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/PMG5_HD_DIY.pdf
Once it is installed, simply boot off of your Mac OS Install media (CD, DVD, USB) it can be any version that supports the PowerPC platform. You need to boot holding the "C" key. Then choose Disk Utility and hit the restore tab. Drag the old partition to the "Source" field and the new hard drive to the "destination" field.
    2. Put the second hard drive into the second (idle) G5. You will need a copy of the Mac OS install DVD as again you cannot clone a drive when it is in use (running the operating system). Hold down the "T" key at boot up and then a firewire logo will bounce on the monitor. then plug the cable into the 2.7 g5 and start it up
I hope that this is helpful.
    Long Live the PowerPC G5

  • Can i connect thunderbolt duo hard drive to the mini display port of a late 2008 macbook pro which do not have thunderbolt port, but have mini display port.

hi, i have a late 2008 15 inch macbook pro, which have a mini display port.
I noticed that thunderbolt and mini display port looks a like. So, my question is :
can i connect thunderbolt duo hard drive to the mini display port of a late 2008 macbook pro which do not have thunderbolt port, but have mini display port.
    thank you

    ken94538,
no, you’d need a Thunderbolt-to-FireWire adapter or Thunderbolt-to-USB adapter to be able to access your Thunderbolt hard drive from your 2008 MacBook Pro.

I just replaced the hard drive for my Mac Pro, and I am trying to restore what is on my Time Capsule, but it wont connect, and only is giving me the pinwheel of death. What do i do?

You will need to boot from some alternate boot device to accomplish this, if you did not initialize the drive before installing it.
If you have another Mac, you may be able to use FireWire target disk mode.
If your MacBook has a DVD reader and you have a Mac OS X Installer/Utilities DVD, such as the one that shipped with it, you can boot from that DVD, answer only the "what Language" question, and wait a quarter minute for the MenuBar to be drawn. Then examine the Utilities menu or the Installer menu and Find Disk Utility.
