My firewire port simply won't work

Both of my Fire wire ports are unable to read my IPOD, and my brother's IPOD Mini. At first I thought that that might be the cable problem, yet the cable does the battery charging okay???
I use the same fire wire cable to connect to my brother's ibook, and it recognize the IPOD and IPOD Mini okay!!! So I guess the cable is okay!
What is going on with my Fire wire??? Please help!
By the way, my 1st USB port from top would randomly not recongnize my storage or IPOD devices as well!

Similar problem here. We've had Apple (via our local authorized repair shop) replace the motherboard, which helped for a while.
The tech has thrown up his hands. Calling Applecare is our next, reluctant step.
The main symptom is that when using Final Cut to render large files to the external FW devices (there are, variously, 2-3, some connected to the 800 port, some to the 400 FW ports), it'll crank away for a while and then the drives unmount and won't come back onto the desktop even after a restart. I haven't tried leaving it off for 15 minutes, and haven't reset the PRAM yet.
How do I do that, again? It's been a while.
We're thinking now that it's either a software problem, and are considering a complete clean installation. Or, it's one of the FW drives that's got a problem, and is frying the ports somehow.
I have my doubts about this because it seems to happen only on this machine. We've moved the FW drives to a G4 laptop, and it works fine.
Is there any known issue -- hardware or software-- with the G5's FW circuitry?

  • My Firewire port has suddenly stopped working. Please help!

I have a G4 Mac Mini, with 512 MB of ram. I was happily computing along when I went to go on my external hard drive and I noticed it wasn't there!!! At first I thought it was the hard drive, but it wasn't because my old iPod mini wouldn't work either. I tried the Apple Hardware Test, but it didn't even think I had a firewire port, which made me think I needed to reinstall Tiger, as it might reinstall the drivers? But it didn't. Apples website doesn't seem to have any drivers available for download either. What should I do? I need my photos, which are on the drive for school!!!
    Thanks for your help

  • Firewire port does not always work to import movies from video camera

I've been having issues with my Mac Pro lately, it is an 06 model. Opening up iMovie and starting the import process for video from my Canon camera, the software will not recognize that the camera is connected.
In system profile I do see that the camera is connected via the fire-wire port and shows the correct name, etc.
After a bit of troubleshooting, restarting software, I unplugged the fire-wire connector that is part of the dongle coming from the 23" cinema display and the camera appeared like it should.
System profile indicated that the fire-wire connection from the 23" display was unknown. I do know that I can plug other items into the display and they work fine.
Rebooting the Mac Pro did not have any effect either.
Granted, it is working, but I wish I did not have to unplug the cinema display port each time I want to do this.

The firewire port on the Display does not have enough internal power requirements to support some devices. Try the firewire port on the back of the Mac Pro. If you are using a firewire repeater then don't connect it to the Display firewire port, use the Mac pro.

  • FireWire ports on display not working with Snow Leopard Mac Pro

I just bought a new quad core Mac Pro with Snow Leopard and I have connected it to my three year- old Apple 23 inch cinema display and everything works fine....except for the Firewire 400 ports on the display. They no longer recognize my external iSight camera or external hard drives. And of course the devices will not connect to the computer's 800 ports. Anyone come across this, or have any solutions? I've tried connecting and reconnecting and have repaired permissions. Thanks.

This means that my Firewire 400 ports on the display are no longer supported by the computer?
They need a FireWire connection to the computer. With older computers, the FireWire cable from the display would plug in to a computer FW400 port to provide the connection. With FW800 only computers, you need the adapter.

  • IMovie simply won't work.  or start.  or do anything.

My iMovie will get to the loading thumbnails screen and won't get past there. how do I fix it? none of this create a new user name stuff.

Try deleting iMovie's preference file. These are notorious for becoming corrupted.
    Close iMovie.
    Go: Home(YourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie.plist.
Drag this plist file to the trash.
    Reopen iMovie.
    See if it works now.
If this does not resolve the issue, try doing a complete shut-down of your computer, and then see if iMovie works ok when you start the computer again.
Post back if these suggestions do not help.

  • [(somewhat) SOLVED] Dnsmasq simply won't work - crashed?

    Hi there,
I'm having a problem with dnsmasq (v2.54 [<- how is this possible anyway? I just reinstalled it, pacman calls it "2.53-1", 'dnsmasq --version' calls it '2.54'…]). I'm just trying to use it as a DNS cache, nothing special.
It seems to be started (with the "log dns queries" option enabled) without problems, but without any queries too (even though there should have been some at this time):
    Jun 7 20:39:04 dnsmasq[1717]: started, version 2.54 cachesize 150
    Jun 7 20:39:04 dnsmasq[1717]: compile time options: IPv6 GNU-getopt no-DBus no-I18N DHCP TFTP
    Jun 7 20:39:04 dnsmasq[1717]: reading /etc/resolv.conf
    Jun 7 20:39:04 dnsmasq[1717]: ignoring nameserver 127.0.0.1 - local interface
    Jun 7 20:39:04 dnsmasq[1717]: read /etc/hosts - 1 addresses
    Jun 7 20:39:15 dnsmasq[1717]: reading /etc/resolv.conf
    Jun 7 20:39:15 dnsmasq[1717]: reading /etc/resolv.conf
    Jun 7 20:39:15 dnsmasq[1717]: ignoring nameserver 127.0.0.1 - local interface
I learned "ignoring nameserver 127.0.0.1 - local interface" is not a bug but a feature (makes sense of course).
As far as I can tell in this short (but complete) log, there is nothing wrong here.
    Still, it is not used:
    dig google.de:
    ;; Query time: 2 msec
    ;; SERVER: 192.168.178.1#53(192.168.178.1)
    dig google.de again:
    ;; Query time: 2 msec
    ;; SERVER: 192.168.178.1#53(192.168.178.1)
Here's my not exactly spectacular resolv.conf:
    # Generated by dhcpcd from eth0
    nameserver 127.0.0.1
    nameserver 192.168.178.1
    # /etc/resolv.conf.tail can replace this line
    /etc/hosts (if needed at all):
    #<ip-address> <hostname.domain.org> <hostname>
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
    # End of file
    Nothing fancy here either.
    I've made two more observations:
    1. A few days ago I switched from a "normal" network setup (using 'eth0="dhcp"' in rc.conf) to 'net-auto-wired' using netcfg.
Browsing using a domain name like 'google.de' has become very slow since then, i.e. connecting to a new website takes a few seconds; following a few links on that (now dns-resolved) website is fast. Browsing using IP addresses is fast as usual.
    2. I cannot restart dnsmasq.
    sudo /etc/rc.d/dnsmasq restart:
    :: Stopping DNS/DHCP daemon [DONE]
    :: Starting DNS/DHCP daemon [FAIL]
Nothing else (not in the logs either). What I can observe in my process list is that a second dnsmasq process is started even though the original process is NOT stopped. After a few seconds, the second, newly created dnsmasq process disappears.
"killall dnsmasq" simply does nothing. It's like pushing Return in my console. No message, no effect, no nothing.
These 2 observations lead me to my assumption, that dnsmasq crashes at some point; an application tries to give its DNS queries to it -> nothing happens -> the applications uses the second entry in my resolv.conf which is my router.
I have no idea whether this assumption is true nor why trying to SIGKILL it doesn't end dnsmasq's miseral life.
I'm stuck here. Can anybody help me?
    Thanks a lot.

Alright, I seem to be able to kill dnsmasq with "kill -9 PID".
"killall" nor the process list of KDE worked which has never occured to me.
This topic is now a duplicate of the other one, let's call it "SOLVED".

  • My firewire ports seemed to stop working - SOS HELP!!!!

Hey Out there...I have a Mac G4, running OS X 10.3.9. I was importing DV video to iMovie through firewire with no problems, then the next day my computer doesn't recognize my camera is attached.
I bought a Lacie D2 DVD +- RW Double Layer burner, that too is not recognized through my firewire.
Any suggestions???? I am very close to throwing everything out the window.

Suggest you buy (about $10) a USB memory card reader. Just plug your camera's memory card into it & copy the pic files to your Mac. Quicker & easier than interfacing the camera for pic transfer.

  • Firewire ports wont work

My Firewire ports have suddenley stopped working.
I have several firewire peripherals and none of them will work.
    Maybe a connection insde?

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.4.5 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
    Good Luck!
    Cheers!

  • Mac G5 firewire porting problem.

    Hello,
I am having a problem with my G5 Powermac firewire porting.
Everything was working fine until we physically moved the mac and peripherals to another office. Now the Firewire drive is not recognized and the Sony DSR45 cannot connect.
Whats really wierd is if I have the Sony DSR45 turned on and I go into the view menu in FCP Studio 6, I can checkmark the "all frames" and it won't change anything. If I turn the deck off, I can change the setting and it will stay changed.
I have tried shutting down the Mac, turning off the DSR45, wait ten minutes, turn on the DSR45, turn on the Mac, the Firewire drive is not recognized and neither is the DSR45.
How do I get the Mac to re-port the firewire ports?
I am using the 800 firewire connection for the Firewire drive.
This all worked fine before moving the system to another office.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Ymir

Try resetting the PRAM. This resets the presence of all hardware devices. Start up holding the keys: command, option, P, R. Hold these keys for 3-chimes and release. Hope this helps.

  • USB 3.0 Hub won't work in 3.0 mode

I have a Portege Z835-P372 and my USB 3.0 Hub (StarTech 2 port hub) won't work in 3.0 mode.
When I purchased the StarTech.com hub, it came with no instructions or CD (with drivers, etc). Their website also has no driversor firmware updates for the hub (As I understand, the hub itself doesn't need any drivers).
When I connected it to my computer the first time it installed it as a Renesas Electronics 2.0 hub. It thus always works only in 2.0 mode.
As I understand I probably need the latest NEC/Renesas drivers and firmware updates, these I have downloaded from the Toshiba driver site, but still no luck.
I did some research and found that the drivers on the Toshiba site are old and there are newer ones out there (but from other sites that I had to register and pay for). Are they available elsewhere?
I did some more research into similar problems people are having out there and there were comments  that the Intel USB 3.0 Driver also has to be updated.
    Any suggestions?

  • BUG - Indexing Options keep pointing to D drive rather than the C drive - search charm won't work

So I noticed that the search in my Windows 8.1 simply won't work to find files and settings. Then I went to Indexing Options in the Control Panel and I noticed that one of the locations Indexing was trying to point to is:
    D:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\ (Unavailable)
This is odd since this is not the location of the Start Menu (which is in the C drive, not the D drive).
So I went on to remove this location and manually add the location of the Start Menu in the C drive (i.e. C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\).
To my surprise, adding the location in the C drive is actually listed as the D drive -- not the C drive. In Fact any directory I try to add to the Index located in the C drive is in fact listed as being in the D drive!
I'm at a loss here, and in fairness I reckon this is a bug.
Have anyone here ever experienced this? Is there any workaround?
EDIT: While the search does not work. It seems like the Windows Explorer search works without any issues.
Also I reckon it is worth mentioning that I change the location of my search index to the D drive. This is because my C drive is a Solid State Drive, while my D drive is a traditional Hard Drive.
Thanks in advance for the help.
    Regards,
    P.

    Hi,
I made a test in my fresh building Windows 8.1. Create a new drive and a new folder in it. After that, add the folder into Windows Index Location. When I delete the folder, its shows up as the screenshot below:
As you can see, it's same with yours, If I choose uncheck the Index folder and reopen Windows Index Location, it would be dispare from this panel.
While for your problem, actually, move the index location is no difference to your Windows search, it just change search file location.
To identify if this is a disk drive problem, you can opt to use Diskpart command to check your drive letter if it was correct.
Open Command Prompt with admin, then type diskpart.
Afer that, type list volume, check current disk label.

  • Help - Php just WON't work

I followed these directions and it simply won't work. Help. Why don't you put PHP and MYSQL in the installer itself? This is why I use Apache, and I can't stand Apache, I want to use sun, but apparently there is no hope for mysql to actually worth with your server, and php can?
4.2 Configuring Web Server to use PHP as NSAPI Plug-in
To configure the Web Server to use PHP as NSAPI plug-in, perform the following steps:
Go to the web server instance's config directory.
    For example (UNIX):
    /sun/webserver70/https-mywebserver/config
Add the following lines to the magnus.conf file:
    UNIX/Linux:
    # Initialize PHP v5.x
    Init fn="load-modules" shlib="libphp5.so" funcs="php5_init,php5_close,php5_execute,php5_auth_trans"
    Init fn="php5_init" errorString="PHP Initialization Failed!"
    Windows:
    # Initialize PHP v5.x
    Init fn="load-modules" shlib="php5nsapi.dll" funcs="php5_init,php5_close,php5_execute,php5_auth_trans"
    Init fn="php5_init" errorString="PHP Initialization Failed!"
Edit the obj.conf file to enable the Web Server to process a PHP-based request.
Important note: If there are more than one file with the name "*obj.conf", be sure to edit the correct file. Use wadm's get-virtual-server-prop command to get the correct file name. For more information on this command, see http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-3283/6n5h03hsu?a=view.
    For example:
    <web server install dir>/bin/wadm get-virtual-server-prop --user=admin --config=CONFIG --vs=VS object-file
    (a) Add the following lines as the first directive of the "default" object in the obj.conf file.
    <Object name="default">
    Service type="magnus-internal/php" fn="php5_execute"
    </Object>
    (b) Modify the PathCheck directive if you want the Web Server to handle index.php as an index for document directories.
    change
    PathCheck fn="find-index" index-names="index.html"
    to
    PathCheck fn="find-index" index-names="index.html,index.php"
Add the following line to the mime.types file to register the PHP extensions with the Web Server.
    type=magnus-internal/php exts=php,php3,php4,php5
(Windows only). Add the <php install directory> to the system PATH so that web server can load the required dlls. Because the web server runs as a windows service, any change in the system PATH requires a restart to take effect.
    For example:
    PATH=...;C:\Sun\Webserver70\plugins\php;

You might also consider simply using the pre-compiled, comes with an installer script copy of PHP from here .
Unfortunately this version of PHP is a bit dated. Hopefully Sun will update it at some point.

  • Managed Account..MSN Messenger won't work

I have 2 accounts, an admin and a managed user. MSN Mac Messenger works on the admin account, but i cannot get it to work on the managed account. I have the managed account set to Some Limits in Finder and System and i have checked the applications that user can use. MSN Messenger is there, but when i login to that manged user account, i click the application and it simply won't work. No message comes up, it just bounces in the dock waiting to go, but nothing ever happens.
    please help...thanks

I don't know anything about "Messenger" specifically, but it probably relies on "helper" apps to perform at least some of its functions. In an extreme case, it could even be that the icon you click on has the sole purpose of launching other apps.
A real example of the "helper" effect (I couldn't think of one off hand earlier) is Apple's "Image Capture.app". Allowing "Image Capture.app" isn't enough to let a "Some Limits" user download pictures from a digital camera (actually, this was true in 10.3 but I haven't checked 10.4), because when a camera is attached, "Image Capture.app" launches one of the many device class specific applications in "System" > "Library" > "Image Capture" > "Devices", which I'm guessing are needed to communicate with the camera. If "supporting programs" are allowed, then the "Camera.app" is allowed to be launched by "Image Capture.app", even if "Camera.app" itself isn't "approved" (and if users were to try to launch it directly themseves, they would be denied access). If "supporting applications" are not allowed, it is necessary for the "admin" to "approve" both applications individually.
Allowing "supporting programs" then allows an "admin" to easily "approve" applications without the need to learn all of the inner workings of any given programme, and in fact, this was the default in "Panther" (with no GUI means to turn it off in fact). The drawback is that it creates a huge loophole whereby some apps (including standards that come with OS X) have features that allow them to be used to launch any other app on the system, rendering "user limitations" useless. There used to be lots of posts on this site complaining about this one, and the fact that there was no GUI way in OS X client to turn off the setting made it a real pain to deal with.
So as with other matters of security, it becomes a trade-off between security and convenience. I suppose that as long as the restricted user doesn't discover the loophole, or the computer is in a location where the discovery of a loophole would be noticed, the current setup would probably be sufficient. If not, hopefully it won't be too hard to deteremine the identity of the helper apps so that "supporting programs" can be turned off and the "helpers" approved separately.
