It wont update my iphone. It says that the firmware file is not compatible.
I have been having the same issue with my phone. I have gone thru tech support and have done everything that they told me to do and it still didn't work. I got a message yesterday saying that there was an update for itunes so I updated my itunes. I reset my phone back to factory settings and restored it using the itunes. When I tried updating my phone before I was just going directly from itunes to my phone. Instead of doing that I just downloaded the update just to itunes. After I downloaded the update i plugged in my phone and updated it from the downloads section of my itunes. It worked, although after the download I tried to open my phone and couldn't get past the home screen. I tried to shut it down but it wouldn't respond so I hard booted the phone and so far have had no problem with it yet. I did not have to remove any security software on my system for this update. It has been very frustrating for me but my phone seems to be working properly now and has taken the update. I hope this helps everyone. By the way I have a 4s.

first i used the itunes method of updating, but it keeped showing error 9006. then i read somewhere on the internet that downloading the update solitary and placing it in this directory will solve the problem:

There may be third-party software that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting a TcpWindowSize entry into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause these errors. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet size modification for assistance or follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
Verify that access to ports 80 and 443 are allowed on your network.

Pretty sure I just downloaded the .exe files to the SD card (I have a directory called "drivers" there & ran from Windows, no need to boot from anything else. Didn't even need to use Safe Boot. The files do need an .exe extension IE someimes downloads as _exe. No idea why but would just need to rename if download has the underscore and not the period. The you can run them.
Was so easy I really did not think about it. One of the Intel Platform drives does say "requires 1.60 update" so that is the one you need. Do the 1.60, reboot, and then the Intel update.
Key point is the release note on the Intel Platform Installer
"Release Notes
1.Please install the Windows BIOS version 1.60 or higher for Encore WT8-A (PDW09x) before installing this Intel Platform Installer update." note this says "BIOS" and not "USB BIOS" which is a smaller file. -

When trying to restore or update my Iphone 4 it errors out with message:..."could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible." How do I resolve this?
Ask him if he has 'jailbroken' the ipod touch. Some jailbreaking firmware resets it to Ipad firmware and so it is very difficult to restore as itunes simply doesnt recognise it for what it is. It's Apple's solution to try and stop mass jailbreaking.

I was syncing my iPod and got the message that an update was available. I downloaded the update and just as it was almost finished, I got an error message. It couldnt' update my iPod because the "firmware file is not compatible." What's up with this? I've never had any problems before with this iPod or with my iPhone 4S before this.
Update your iTunes to latest version.
Try restoring your phone in DFU Mode, if that doesn’t work then try downgrading your iTunes back to iTunes 8 and try again. -

I have the 4.1.2 version and that is the version of the firmware file. Doesn't make sense. I tried restarting my computer twice, only thing plugged into a USB port is my iPod. Running iTunes as an administrator.

I believe that it was in sleep mode, but my old Mac didn't do this. When I came back to it after being in sleep mode, it would start right back up, none of this white screen delay before getting started.
