My first airport card.......HELP!!!!!!!!

Alright, I may be behind the times, but I finally got an airport card for my ibook. But I need a little help getting it hooked up.
I went ahead and got it plugged in and the machine recognizes it just fine. But I can't get online with it. My neighbor has a wireless router that he lets every-one in the building use. I know it reaches here because other people in the building have sat where I am right now and were on the internet. What do I need to do in order for me to recognize his signal. I would appreciate your help very much.

Assuming the router is broadcasting in range you should be able to see it if your Internet setings are correct. If you go to Apple/Locations/ Network preferences and for this exercise make sure that the Airport port is dragged to the top of the list and that you have TCP IP set to DHCP. If it is all as this and you have Airport switched on and visible in the tool bar you should see it as black lines, rather than grey if it is talking to a network. See if the network your friend is broadcasting is named in the menu and if it is select it. You may need to have the password to hand. If the network is a closed network you may have to go to "Other" and type in the exact name of the network and the password. If none of these work then I can suggest that rebooting the computer may actually throw up the network when booting finishes and you may be invited to join it. I hope this is useful and that it works. Drew.

  • Airport Card help - still wont work in browser

    Hi there
I posted a while ago and have now bought and installed an airport card successfully. I want to use my ibook wirelessly using my bt wireless broadband router. The airport card is picking up the BT voyager router signal strongly and apparantly it is really easy from here on but I cant get anything to work from here on. I assumed I'd just open the browser and it would work but it keeps coming up with a message about the server not working.
I am so angry with how long it has taken me to get a mac on the internet, I shant be buying another in the future but for now I am using a friends windows laptop with all the wires connected.
Can ANYONE please please help me!!?? I do not need anymore hardware type objects do I? I'm stumped

Hi, Jenny. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
What is the MHz rating of your iBook?
What version of the Mac OS are you using? (We need to know this because the method for setting up AirPort is a little different in each.) Guessing that you are in a version of OS X, go to System Preferences > Network and make sure that AirPort is selected as your means of getting on your network.
How are you connecting to the internet? Are you connecting via a DSL modem, a cable modem, or what?
Which model of wireless router do you have?
There are some troubleshooting guides here (if you haven't already checked there):
    http://www.voyager.bt.com/selfhelp/shc_wireless.htm
Click on the topic, "Im unable to access the Voyager Config Manager on my Macintosh..." However, choose the AirPort settings instead of Ethernet.
I'm no expert on this, because my iBooks (all four of them) have just found our network with no problem.

MacBook 2008 wifi suddenly stopped working and says no wifi hardware. Took it to an apple shop, they said it could be the airport card but wouldn't do anymore then that.
Any help on how to fix this? How do I know if it is the airport card or not?
is there anything else I can try first?
    thanks

If the technician at the shop is competent, he has given you a diagnosis that should have identified the problem.  You could run the Apple Hardware Test to verify the findings:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257
Note the Apple Hardware Test is not definitive.
Go to the iFixit.com and Powerbookmedic.com web sites.  They have parts and installation instructions.  To install an Airport card is fairly easy.
    Ciao.

  • Time Capsule lost connection, now my computer tells me there's no AirPort-card installed... HELP!

This morning my Time Capsule blinked orange for a minute, then went back to green. In the meantime I couldn't see one single wifi network through my Airport, it just showed as no connection and no networks available (my husband also on this wireless network, had no problems though). I decided to restart my computer and after doing that my Airport told me there's no AirPort-card installed. I can't look for my Time Capsule now as it won't detect it of course, so through that there is no way of solving it. I did the disk First Aid as read somewhere that checking and resetting the authorities for writing (I'm sorry, really don't know the right term for this, in Dutch: Schrijfbevoegdheden) might help but that didn't do anything. I really don't know what to do, sure it's a software program but I'm a total nitwit with computers and don't want to start just doing things and messing it up even worse... Any help is much appreciated!!!

Updating to 10.5.6 fixed the issue.

  • Airport Card not picking up networks...Someone please help!!

Alright heres the deal. I just bought my first MAC, a Mac Pro With 2 2.66 Xeon processors, yes this thing should fly the space shuttle(you'd think). But why does Apple not have a preinstalled Airport Card in their top of line unit? Who knows. Anyway, I went to the Apple store and purchased one and installed it, no problem. It should work, right? WRONG. My nightmare has started. The computer definitely reads that the card is there. ID and all. But I am not seeing and IP address in the dialog box/tab TCP??. I have called Apple Care to no avail, folks at the store, don't have a clue, so i thought i'd give this forum one more shot at the hopes that someone here will know how to configure this thing and get me on line. NAturally i am writing this from my trusty ol' PC...which never fails me, btw. FYI, the other two computers in my houselhold, this trusty Sony Viao and an iMAC laptop, have no problem at all picking up network signals. And folks come over all the time with their MAC laptops and never have a problem accessing our network..so why can't my MAC PRO? Is there a driver to install, and if so why did it not come in the box with the Card? Someone please help me out before i take this thing back and get a PC. I am on the verge. Thanks.

    Let's double-check your AirPort settings:
To setup AirPort for High-Speed Cable Internet connectivity:
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
    - Verify that an AirPort option exists. If it does not, click "New" to create one. (Note: If you are unable to create an AirPort configuration, the AirPort card in your computer either doesn't exist or it is not recognized.)
    - Verify that AirPort is "On" (checked)
    - Verify that AirPort is at the top of the list. If it isn't, you can drag it to the top.
Systems Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort
    AirPort tab
    - By default, join: Automatic
    TCP/IP tab
    - Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    - Configure IPv6: Automatically or Off
    Proxies tab
    - Configure Proxies: Manually
    - Select a proxy server to configure: <All proxies should be unchecked unless you specifically require a proxy for Internet access.>
    - Exclude simple hostnames (unchecked)
    - Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains: <leave blank>
    - Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) (checked)

  • New Airport card, no service...Help

I just bought an airport card for my iMac G4, I have wireless internet and two other macs, they work perfectly with their airport cards. I put my airport card in and nothing, keeps saying there was an error connecting to airport network, ive called my internet provider, apple, and the router supplier. None helped whatsoever, I even lost 50 dollars to apple for no help HA. It must be my computer because ive used a working airport card from my macbook and it still did not give me signal, if anyone could throw me some advice, or something im doing wrong or not doing, or some software that i need, I would be very grateful. Thank You.
    - The knight of ewigkeit

hey there Knight & welcome to discussions,
i had this issue w/ a friend's Mac & the problem was pilot error-- the card wasn't snapped in tight to the cable. as soon as i did that the Mac immediately found my network & asked to join. i am assuming you have the correct card-an Airport Extreme made for this computer, it should be wireless b/g compatible, not the original Airport Card. see this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=26237. step by step instruction w/ pix. how i installed Airport Extreme card in a 20" iMac G4.
    good luck.

  • Problems with my AirPort card -- in dire need of help!

    Hello everyone.
Something very odd and equally horrible has just happened.
I've turned on my MacBook Pro 15" and - poof! - apparently it's as if the AirPort Card (which has worked perfectly well for over a year now) were no longer there, meaning that the computer just won't "see" it.
I really am at a loss to explain this because earlier in the afternoon I used my MacBook Pro as usual and everything was fine -- I didn't do anything besides surfing the Net, as I always do. Now I've turned it on and it's as if there were no AirPort Card in the computer.
The AirPort network, on the other hand, keeps working all right (I'm writing on another Mac on the same network).
What's wrong?!?!?! Is it a hardware issue? Is my Card simply busted? Or could it be a software issue (dunno - viruses or whatever else)??
    Thank you, I'm desperate!

It seems it won't be necessary -- this is beyond weird!
I've just re-turned on my Mac (which I had already tried to do a couple of times before posting my question, even allowing some time for the computer to cool off and relax, but unsuccessfully) and the AirPort Card is working again...what the bloody hel*?! Hopefully it is going to keep behaving properly for good, now!
Anyway, thank you so much for your help, I'll note down your suggestion in case it happens again in the future!
    Have a nice day

  • HELP!!  AirPort card not detecting any wireless networks?!?

hi, i just had an AirPort extreme card installed in my PowerBook G4, and so far, everywhere i try to access wireless, all it says is "no AirPort networks in range."
I have AirPort turned on, and AirPort and "automatic" and "DHCP"selected in Network preferences, and i have the little icon with the gray bars in the top menu bar, but the lines are always gray, even when everyone around me is getting wireless just fine.
I don't know if this matters, but i don't have a base station or anything at home - i only got wireless to use at cafes, etc, or on university campus where they have wireless. at home i just have a free dialup service, so i use a modem.
Also, i'm really confused reading these posts - everyone's talking about "naming" networks, and passwords, and IP addresses, but the apple guy said that once the card is in and AirPort is on, it should just "pick up" whatever network is available. is that true?
if it's working, does the "name" of the random, supposedly "open" and available network in the cafe/hotel/school building just magically "appear" on the menu? Or do i have to do something or configure something each time to set it up? i just really don't understand and no one seems to be able to help. and i just spent a lot of money on this card. can anyone please help???!!?!?
I even opened it up again and checked to make sure the little cable was clicked firmly into the card, and it sure looked like it was.
    thanks!!!!

Double check that the antenna cable is FULLY seated into its socket on the Airport card - doing this properly takes a fair bit of force.
If your Mac's Airport interface is working properly, indeed all you need to do is click on the Airport menu item. A list of all in-range wireless networks will be shown, and you can simply click (to connect) on the name of the network you wish to join. Just like magic!

  • Installed 10.4.6, airport card is now dead. PLEASE HELP!

I installed 10.4.6, my airport card worked great before this. Now it's totally dead, won't power on and doesn't work. The card is only a few months old and worked great before I installed 10.4.6. I have tried taking the card out and reinserting it, restarting the computer, restarting the router, restarting the airport extreme base station, playing around with the network settings, you name it I have tried it. Can someone please give me some help???
    400mghz Powerbook G4 Titanium Mac OS X (10.4.6) 100gb hd, 768mb RAM

    it's actually a Macsense AEROcard extreme WPE-800.
It's this one you're talking about, isn't it? Do they use any custom drivers or is it plug+play?
And I don't have another laptop to test it on. I have contacted Macsense and the only response I got from them was one asking me what kind of computer I am using the card on.
What kind of response was that? They make Mac products, you've been using the card fine, it now seems dead and the only feedback you got from them was that?
BTW: wireless cards run hot and it's not unusual to get fried (or fry the PCMCIA slot they plug in), the best way to verify if the card's dead or not is to take your card to a friend's Mac (or try your local Apple Store) and test it (see if it powers on).
Again, if the card is dead (and when hardware fails) 10.4.6 (and any OS) has nothing to do with it

  • Help!  my airport says "No Airport card Installed"!!

My computer has been working fine and now i just turned on and my airport is gone!! it won't let me do anything wireless and when i click on the icon at the top it says "No Airport Card Installed"!!
it was working just fine an hour ago!! my computer is about a year old and full updated with snow leopard.
Could this be a virus? only thing i loaded today, beside torrent files, was the Flip4Mac upgrade.
Would appreciate it if anyone can help me!!
    thanks,

It's not a virus. Try resetting your SMC (system management controller). Does System Profiler also show that the AirPort card is not installed?

  • Installing airport card: please help me!

I have put it into my friends clamshell ibook g3,..following the right instructions for physical installation under the keyboard,. but when i turn on the laptop, no new hardware is detected, and there is none in the system properties, or whatever its called,.. So basically nothing happens,. Additionally, the software in the CD is already on the computer (as it is Mac OS X 10.3.9). Any ideas? Any weblinks that have more detailed advice about these problems? Is there any way of finding out if the card just doesnt work?
    Thanks very much,
    Michael

You should be looking to setup the airport card through the Network preference in System Preferences. Select "Airport" from the "Show" popup menu. You may have to "Select Network Port Configurations" from the "Show" popup and check "Airport" first in order for it to appear in in the "Show" popup.
Additionally System Profiler should list the Airport Card under the network area.
Note: there is no "new hardware detected" notification after installing new hardware under MOSX as there is in Windows.

  • PCI cards, Airport cards...help me understand what is what and why?

Help me understand this wireless network "card" hardware stuff.
I have a dual 867 MHz G4 that I want to set up for networking with a PC so that both machines can access the internet (via DSL).
As far as I know, my Mac does not have an airport card of any kind. I'm planning to buy a Lynksys WRT 54G2 wireless router. Do I need to also install an airport card, or PCI card in my G4 to make this all happen? And, if so, what is recommended that will work with my G4?
The guys at the Apple store are telling me that all I need is a wireless router, and don't have to install anything extra, but what I'm reading on these various networking threads, is that just the G4 and a wireless router will not do the trick. After reading lots of threads here, it's sounding like I have to jump through hoops to set up a usable, working network. The Apple guy says that this is easy and basic. I'm thinking that THEY are thinking in terms of a newer machine, maybe? They're all young guys who probably think that nothing goes back farther than the iMac.
One thing the Apple guys were pushing is Airport Extreme, but at $180, I somehow thing I can get there for much less than that.
To make a long story short (hah...too late for that), what exactly do I need as far as a card, router, etc., and where do I get the right stuff (links would be helpful) to set up a Mac/PC network using my old decrepit G4?

    Hi-
    Networking Macs and PCs
    Setup a Home Network
    Create a small Ethernet network
    MacWireless
Check the above links, and you will be better educated in the basics and requirements of various networks.
The easiest, and least hardware intensive is the Ethernet network. Also, Ethernet is fast.
A note about Airport; you machine only accepts standard 802.11b Airport cards. In a word, very slow.
Airport Extreme, or 802.11g, is much faster, and 802.11n is the fastest available. To get 802.11g or 802.11n in your machine will require a PCI adapter.

Thanks for the flag J.K. - they contaced me and solved my problem.  On this account (which I created just to ask this question), I log in with my email rather than my user name (mtalldud). On the account that I was having trouble with, they told me to use my user ID instead of my email to log in and it worked. This is a bit confusing and seems a bit inconsistent but at least I don't need this temporary account any more to get into this community and find answers!
