My First BURN!

Okay... I'm a complete newbie and this is my first project with FCP. First time to ever use DVD Studio, as well. Heck... until this, I've never used ANY video editor!
The footage I have is DVC PRO HD 720 24pn.
Want to burn to a DVD, after making a menu in DVD Studio.
My question is, do I need to compress for DVD burn... or just export... not sure what the best step is. Of course, I don't expect the HD to hold up when converting to DVD... won't be played on HD player.
So, how should I proceed?

Export self contained, and drop the footage into Compressor.
Elect the preset for 16:9 consistent with the length of the video.
Also export to Dolby 2 audio.
DVCProHD footage looks fabulous compressed to SD DVDs.

  • Performed System Recovery but first Burned my Music onto a DVD

I am wondering how, now that I have re-installed itunes, to import my music files from the DVD back into Itunes. Can you help? I'd appreciate it...thanks!

  • Music starts and stops during playback of burned DVD

I really need help with this problem...I made a slideshow and added music from itunes in the program IDVD. Once I burned the DVD the music will start and stop throughout the DVD and not at chapters as I read in other threads - but in random places on the DVD. The DVD sounds like it gets hung up and then starts again. This is my first project using IDVD, so any help would be great.

    Debra,
Do your project have music purchased from iTunes? If so, that could be the cause of this problem. Music from iTunes is DRM-protected and can cause problems in playback. To take care of this, first burn all of your purchased music to a CD, then reimport in an aiff format. To do this, in iTunes, go to iTunes>Preferences>Advanced>Importing. Look for "Import using", and use the drop-down menu to select AIFF encoder.
    Good luck.

  • How do I burn multiple images from iPhoto to cd?

I have downloaded some family vacation photos to iphoto.  iphoto separated them into four events with a total of 161 pictures.  I tried to "burn" one event at a time to a non rewrite CD.  After the first "burn" the program said that this CD was not rewritable and would not permit the second "burn".  I then used a rewritable CD and maxed it out with these 161 regular photos.  When I opened the files in the CD there were other files beside the images (a total of 512).  I was a long time Windows user and have a feeling that I am either over simplifying the process or missing a step.  Where can I find instructions?  Thanks

Burn for what purpose? To share with others?
Export the photos to a folder on the Desktop. Burn that with the Finder. Result: a folder of images that any computer can read.
Using iPhoto's Burn command creates an iPhoto Library on the disk and is suitable only for others also using the same version of iPhoto.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
Note that rewriteable disks do not necessarily mean that you can append files to them, and require special burning software to do so.

  • IDVD ejects disk before burn is completed

I made my DVD starting with iMovie '09, Shared it to iDVD '09, added all the niceties and all, then I hit burn... Went through 2hrs and 43 minutes of Preparing, processing menus, slideshows and movies, got to burn with 8 minutes remaining when the DVD (Verbatim DVD-R) ejected, I re-inserted the disk (nothing was burned on it) and the count down continues. The disk doesn't show up in Finder, nor on the desktop, and the progress bar is full blue and marking done, but the timer continues to count down...
    What's going on?

    No error messages at all.
There are 10 chapters, none with special characters. I should add that I burned a copy last week without any problems at all... since then, the only thing I did to the project was split up a chapter (it was too long for my liking), and added closing credits. I then added a slideshow to the project because there was lots of room left on the DVD (from the first burn). I still won't fill the DVD so size (movie length) is not an issue.
I found a similar thread (ok, identical problem as me) read through all four pages and am troubleshooting from suggestions on that thread... (currently, am creating a disk image of the project.... should be done in 1 hr, 27 minutes). I'll check that with the Apple DVD player and then try to burn the image with disk utility.
Thanks for the response... still looking for an answer though.

  • Audio burp after idvd burn, but fine on computer preview

Help. I created a dvd using idvd 6 for a wedding with 179 slides and 4 songs. First burn with 140 slides and 3 songs was fine. Second burn after 40 additional slides and 4th song has a burp in the 3rd song. Removed songs and re-added but has the exact same problem after burning again. It plays fine on the computer. Is there anything I can do to correct the encoding or burning process? Wedding is in 2 days. aarg. Thanks,

    Hi
Where did Your audio originate ? (file type)
    • Audio-CD (normal one)
    • From iTunes (Copy out as an Audio-CD (.aiff)
    • .mp3, .avi, .wmv etc ?
I only use .aiff audio in my projects except audio from miniDV tape Camera.
    I would
    • trash iDVD pref file
    • secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk IMPORTANT
    • first replace all strange audio with .aiff audio
    • skip the iDVD project and make a fresh new one
    • make a DiskImage and test this with Apple DVD-player
    • still OK Burn either via iDVD or rather from the DiskImage with
Apple Disk Util tool (or easier Roxio Toast™)
    on as alreaddy stated
    • Verbatim DVD
    • DVD-R (no +R or+/-RW)
    • at an as slow burn-speed possibly (eg x1)

  • DVD+R burn quirk in Leopard

Hi, I usually use DVD-R but the last shipment was DVD+R and I didn't notice or I'd have sent it back. Anyway it used to all work fine but in the last little while (since OS 10.5.1 or 10.5.2 I'm not sure) I've been consistently getting failed first burns and successful second one. Like clockwork. The first disk is unusable and while the finder still shows the first burn folder I insert a second DVD+R and burn it without problem. This smells like a bug to me. Can anyone shed any light on it? It's Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD+R and I archive still photography if that's relevant.
    Many thanks,
    Dave

So much for that idea, I loaded OS 10.4.6 on a spare partition, booted and the finder still fails to burn DVD+R on the first try. Maybe there's a cache or something created in leopard or something, maybe I should have cleaned everything up with Onyx first, I don't know, I'm not giving this any more energy. DVD-R's burn fine I'll stick to those for now.

  • Burning CD-R

I have Iphoto 4.0.3. I am having a big problem with burning cd-r. The last cd I tried to burn was only 81 photos which is 201 mb on a 700 mb cd. The first burn worked ok. Wanted another copy and could not burn it. This has also been a problem in the past. I think I tried 6 or 7 times to burn a copy with no luck. I would get the screen that says burn failed. I tried different burn speeds from 4 to 32. Some of the burns would go all the way to the verifing screen and then fail. Other times it would just fail durning the burn. I have tried maybe four different brands of cd-r's.
I can burn cd's okay in Itunes with no problem.
Somewhere in disscussions I read anytime you are having problems with Iphotos all you need to do is take the iphoto plist to the trash and restart iphotos. I'm not sure about doing that.
Any help would be nice. Thanks ahead of time.

The warning dialog suggests either an information stream timing issue, or a problem at the burner. A couple of things come to mind, but your success (with the first burn attempt) would seem to eliminate a few otherwise likely suspects. File Vault should be off, and any other running applications (even background ones like Mail, disk indexing, or housekeeping routines) can be distracting to the process. Also, swap files tend to get bigger (or more numerous) the longer your Mac runs. Restarting your Mac prior to a burn session is an easy way to reset them.
A piece of defective media certainly would be a prime suspect, as well. You said you tried multiple times after the successful burn. Was it always with the same blank disc?

  • IDVD Multiple Disc Burning

I created a movie in IMovie and put it into IDVD and went through the encoding process and it burned fine with no problems, but I wanted to burn several DVD's without closing it, but it did not give me the option of "would you like to burn another disk" like it has in the past when I created other movies. It would eject the disc after the first burn. I did try just to put another blank in the drive and it looks like it would start to burn, but then it would say "done" on the screen. I could use some advice on this if anyone has a fix in mind. Thank You

ok ... it made a coaster and you know this because you can actually see that the bottom of the DVD was written to, or at least partially written to ..... correct?
If this is the case, what type and brand of media are you using? Is it Verbatim or Maxell DVD-R? (please tell me you are Not using Memorex or TDK media nor did you switch brands on the second or subsequent attempt at burning). When is the last time you cleaned the DVD Lens with a quality DVD lens cleaner? (again I recommend Maxell DVD Lens cleaner kits /3M since cheaper brands sometime do more harm than good).
btw .... You need to wait at least 20 mins. in between burns to allow the laser to cool for the next/subsequent DVD copy. Did you do this as well?

  • First Coaster in almost 5 years

My old laptop died and my new MacBook has iDVD 6. I tried my first burn last night (a 53 minute iMovie w/chapters) and it freezes when played on my set top DVD player. The second copy I burned seems to work OK. Both were on Maxell 16x media.
Previously, all of my iDVD's were done over the last 5 years on this computer and since it has a 2x burner and 2x media is no longer available it burns at 1x when using 16x media. These and the older 2x discs always worked perfectly.
What should I do to get it to burn right the first time?
Also, in iDVD 4, I was able to drag the "myproject.mov" icon from the iMovie project folder to iDVD and it would import the imovie and automatically make a separate folder for the chapters. When doing this in iDVD6, the chapters are lost. In iDVD4, dragging the iMovie projects was the only way to get two separate movies with their chapters into a single iDVD project. How do I get two movies w/chapters into a single iDVD6 project?

Ok there are several issues here Lauren. Some I can sort of help with.
How did your iMovie project get into iDVD? Did you export it/share it from iMovie? Because that could be the cause of some of your problems. Recommendations are for you to close your iMovie project. Open your iDVD project then find the image of your iMovie project in the finder and "drop" it into your iDVD project. Apparently this eliminates the double rendering - and may eliminate the freezing.
The second issue is to do with the sort of media used. Recommendations from long time users in here suggest Verbatim -R.
The third issue I can deal with is the burn ratio. If you save your project to disk, you can then use Toast or Disk Utility to burn at a reduced rate. iDVD seems to burn at the maximum rate of the disk used (for example at 16x on the media you chose). If you use Toast or Disk Utility you can choose the burn rate at preferrably 1 or 2x.
    I hope this helps.
I am unable to help you with your other questions.

  • Intel Mini DVD+RW re-burns fail: 4/03/00 Hardware Error, Peripheral device

I can't re-write DVD+RW discs on my Intel Mini. The log says:
Backup: Burn sense: 4/03/00 Hardware Error, Peripheral device write fault
Backup: Burn error: 0x80020022 The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.
It happends with every Philips 4x DVD+RW I have after first burn. Also the log says it is trying to burn at 47x speed. Could this be why it is so noisy - it spins up like a rocket at 5 second intervals and then the disks can't be ejected.
Backup: Requested burn speed was 47x, actual burn speed is 4x.
Is this a sign of a bug or just an optimistic Backup?

I'm 99.99% sure this is an Intel Mini Superdrive problem now. I think it is incompatible with the Philips DVD+RW media. I will try to get new +RW media soon and see if I get joy with other formats.
I have taken the exact same media from the same pack and I can burn > erase FIVE times on the same disk, and not a single problem yet on my PPC G4 mini. I can only dream of doing this cycle once on my Intel Mini.
Intel mini (OS X 10.4.7) has:
    Vendor Product Rev
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846 FM3J
PPC (OS X Server 10.4.7) mini has:
    Vendor Product Rev
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845 D8PB
What's more the PPC mini makes almost zero noise, only one burst of quier "roar" near the start of erase. Contrast this to the constantly 5s roaring cycle that makes you raise your voice on the intel mini.
I believe my Intel Mini is either faulty or there is a firmware issue with the drive.
Can somebody else try Philips 4x DVD+RW discs in an Intel Core Duo and report their drive info?
    Thanks in advance

  • Failure to burn CD error message

Everything has been working fine until recently when every CD that is burned only records the first 5-6 songs and then ejects the CD and the message "failure to burn CD error" message is displayed.

I don't think this problem has been "answered". The problem is random. Sometimes I burn with no problem. This morning my first burn worked fine. Then I had 4 failures in a row. Tried changing nothing. Tried changing burn speed. Eventually I am now having a sucessful burn. Thank goodness that it does not ruin the blank but it seems to be increasing in frequency. Why doesn't apple address this problem? I see hundreds of posts with the same problem. Many are archived. Some like this thread claim to answered. But the problem is that, in my experience, the problem comes and goes. Sometimes I have sucess without changing anything after a failure. Today I quit iTunes and when I started it up again it failed once and now its just finished a sucessful burn. I'm burning the same playlist each time of unprotected music but I notice no difference whether I'm burning purchased music, ripped music, downloaded music, aiff, aac, acc protected, mpeg or a mixture of same.

  • Having to burn multiple DVDs to check quality and etc of clip, any other???

Ok I have heard about (http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/). My question is, will that let me see my clips as if it where being played on a DVD player? For example: Sometimes I compress a clip and it looks as if everytime someone moves they have lines on them, but when I burn it on DVD and watch it on my TV it looks fine or vise versa. Also sometimes when I compress something and burn it and play it on the TV the people have like this ghosting affect when they move but not when I watch the compressed file on my mac. Basicly I am tiered of wasting my DVDs just to make sure it looks ok. Will this "http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/" solve my problem?
    thanks

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If you save the project to Disk Image first you might be able to burn two at a time. Saving as a disk image lets you check the encoding with DVD Player first before committing to disk. Then burn it with Disk Utility at the slowest speed possible.
Yesterday's MacOSXHints site has a hint on how to open multiple occurrences of the same application, in this case Disk Utilty: An easy way to run multiple instances of any program.
If that didn't work you could use Disk Utiltiy to burn the disk image while using iDVD to burn directly from the project. The first burn would be very slow as it would have to redo the encoding but then it would go pretty fast after that. Be sure to give the drives a bit of a rest. You don't want them to overhead and fail which is possible.

  • On burning CDs

I'm beginning to see the +light at the end of the tunnel+ concerning my first attempt to produce my own CD. (It's only been almost *two years* in the making.) Just something to leave behind and share with a few friends and family in the process.
I believe I already have good suggestions on labeling programs for CDs and case jackets.
But does anyone have any suggestions on how I should go about actually burning my finished playlist to CDs? I would think there might be a better alternative than doing it via my computer.
Is there some kind of CD burning machine I should consider purchasing. Or, a website company that would do it? (I'm still on Panther and don't intend to change, at least for a while.)
My final result will actually be a two-CD set. I'm thinking I would need about 200 CDs burned...100 for each CD.
    Thoughts? Advice?
    Thanks in advance.
P.S. What would I do first: burn the CD and then print, or print first and then burn?

I think all of the setting within iTunes (fade, etc) only work within iTunes. They won't work on burning, at least that's how it used to be. If you learn different please let us know.
You could always burn a test disc making the eq settings crazy so noticing would be easy.

  • Burned DVD not as expected

I created a short slideshow with iPhoto '05, added music and set the slideshow to fit the music. Exported to iDVD, added a photo and music to one of the 04 themes. The slideshow previews in both iPhoto and iDVD look fine, it's when I burn it onto a DVD that it doesn't look right. The photos in the slideshow are brighter and more saturated than the ones in iPhoto, there are what look like splotches on the parts where the vivid colors are. I tried burning another DVD with the Best Quality setting switched to the other setting and viewed it with two different DVD players, my PB G4 and MBP. It does seem a little better than the first burn but it's still nowhere near as good as the iPhoto and iDVD previews.
This didn't happen in the previous burn projects using the same settings.
    What happened to my slideshow?
    Any help is appreciated.
Happy Holidays to whomever reads this.

Hmmm. The preferences are confusing -- if your show is less than an hour, use Best Performance to yield the best looking result (least compression).
TVs can have difficulty showing the brightest reds, deep blacks, etc. Those colors tend to bleed into the surrounding area, and should be avoided for font colors. And it's possible that your computer display will generally look better than the TV when playing the DVD (note: an iPhoto slideshow will almost always look better on your computer -- no DVD compression and a high quality monitor).
Lower quality media can introduce problems -- check this by Saving as Disc Image from iDVD, and play the resulting virtual DVD using Apple's DVD PLayer.
