My first experience(review) with ICS

Hello everyone,
Hopefully i got my share of ICS update on my Xperia Mini Pro although my SI number was not listed on the blog/thread. It is working smoothly and i have spent around 5 hours checking all of its new features.. I am writing my experiences with it. Others are welcome to add their experiences.
The New Face Unlock feature is awesome although i experience some difficulties with it. Sometimes when i try to unlock my phone, the face unlock screen appears black(for about 2/3 sec) then the Pattern unlock screen(for 2/3 secs) and then the Face Unlock screen appears. Don't know whether this is happening only to me or not.
I am unhappy with the new screenshot feature. The previous screenshot feature(of GB) is more user friendly with this one. You need to press the Power button and the Volume down key to take a screenshot, which i think is not good.
The notification light of the new ICS is buggy. Sometimes the led for sms will blink and other times, it will not. Also, the notification for Facebook is also not working as in GB.
The Album art of my songs will not appear on the Android Music Player(this was not the case in GB), some do appear.
It takes 5/6 secs for the Contact page to appear.
Love the new Gallery(not Xperia Gallery), although some features like Share,Crop etc are missing.
The video player is not good as it is used to be.. Earlier, in GB a particular video shows correctly but in ICS the video would show smaller...
The new Status Switch is good, i like the battery meter..
The confirm dialog while deleting sms is different. Earlier the Yes box appears on the left side and No on the right, but now it is different. It will take quite a few days to get to this new change.
I like the new FONT SIZE feature under Settings> Display.
Hoping to add more ...

Thank you for the nice description TIP: should write here:

how do a get a refund on a ridiculously slow downloading rented movie for my apple tv dispite a >5mb/sec down load speed? my first experience with appletv movie rental. no good. rented at 4:30pm. still waiting for standard def movie to finish at 8:10pm. Not good enough.

Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...

  • This my first experience with itunes and using a gift carddownloaded an album and only half of a few songs played before jumping to the next song

This is my first experience with itunes and I chose to download a Mark Knopfler album. The first three songs stopped half way and instantly started the next song. How do I re-load the songs since i now "own" them? Thanks. Luce.

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copies of the dodgy tracks and try redownloading fresh copies. For instructions, see the following document:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the items that are not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the items, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" links next to the items.

  • ICS 5.1: first time sync with PDA unable to transfer events?

I am using the iPlanet Synch software (beta build 260) and I think I have tried every possible way to sync the PDA with iCS and have also tried to sync the Palm Desktop calendar to iCS 5.1. I can reset everything to sync the PDA with our older Netscape Calendar Server, then remove the Netscape Palm conduit, then sync back to the Palm Desktop software. At that point I have events synchronised between the Palm Desktop and the PDA itself. Then when I install the iPlanet Synch software version 2.6 and configure to connect to the iCS 5.1 server, I can connect successfully but I get an error: unable to add event, synchronization aborted. My original events have minimal descriptions and no fancy fields. There must be a way to get this to work without deleting all events!
If you have any ideas about where to look ...

Not too sure if you have but make sure your exact and entire library has been imported, including all metadata and random files , not just the individual music files.
To import a library(Make sure you have consolidated your files first):
    - Find it: (Usually under My Music)
-Copy over the entire itunes folder
    - In itunes, click file, library, import. Locate the library you`ve just copied over (The itunes folder)
    - Let itunes do it`s thing
-This will replace your current itunes library(Empty) with the old one(Including your songs and such)
After you`ve imported your library, Try these things:
    - make sure your computer is authorized for the new content (Under store, click authorize this computer)
    - if you have jailbroken, try restoring (Make sure to backup before trying this)
If it still says that it will erase your files, your library is either corrupt or incorrectly transferred.
If this is the case, it is rather inconvenient.
    - Backup everything to icloud (Contacts, Mail etc.)
    - Transfer all purchases to itunes
    - Let itunes deleteeverything and re sync. (Make sure everything is backed up and that all your files are in itunes)

  • First Experience

Just wanted to share my first experience with my new Mac Mini Server so others may avoid some frustration.
Last night, I turned on my brand new Mac Mini Server. I already had an Apple Wireless Keyboard and Might Mouse and plugged in my usual LDC monitor using the HDMI-DVI converter. The first screen I see shows me that I need to turn on my mouse. Great so I do. I then proceed through the first couple screens of Setup Assistant until I have to enter the Mac OS X Server serial key. I then realize it never paired with my wireless keyboard and since I only have old PS2 keyboards and no USB keyboards, I'm presently hosed. So I turn the machine off and reboot a few times to find that Setup Assistant now disconnects the mouse when displaying the big "X" splash animation. Great, I can't even get back to where I was before. So I read the manual and proceed with a remote setup using my MacBook Pro. I install the Server Admin tools and it finds my MacMini. I click to select it and click the Set Up button. Nothing ever happened: Setup Assistant never opened. Great.
After a while I remember an old KVM switch which just happened to have PS2 inputs and USB outputs so I'm back in business. I finally get through Setup Assisant and now logged in to the administrator account. While running Software Update, it downloads both an Apple Wireless Keyboard firmware update and a Server Admin tools update. Well that probably explains my initial problems. Even after the update, it took several attempts to re-pair the keyboard. I never tried running remote Setup Assistant after that.
So lessons learned: a.) Make sure your wireless keyboard has the latest firmware updates before turning on your Mac Mini Server for the first time; b.) after installing Server Admin tools from the packaged DVD, check for and install updates before using them for remote setup.

As you do have a running XP maybe you start with a plain Sun Ray Server (5.2.3) to get started and to get familiar with the system (in fact, we are just using physical Win7 and lot of WTS as backend) ...
1.) Install Virtual Box (we are are running on ESX)
    2.) Install Solaris x64
    3.) Install Sun Ray Server
4.) Install Oracle Virtual Desktop Client on your Laptop
4.) Create a kiosk to your XP laptop like e.g
    -bash-3.00# utkiosk -e pc7145
    KIOSK_SESSION=uttsc
    KIOSK_SESSION_TIMEOUT_DETACHED=12000
    KIOSK_SESSION_ARGS=-l de-DE -E wallpaper -E theming -r scard:on xpXXXX (hostname of your XP PC)
    KIOSK_ENABLED=yes
as default kiosk ... (called uttsc in Sun Ray, i.e an RDP Connection to your PC)
5.) start OVDC and connect to your sun ray server, it will show up with with the login screen of your PC.
    more info is here http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/sunrayproducts/docs/index.html
I'm running such an environment for about 200 Sun Rays (HW), OVDC (SW) and in the future iPad Clients (iOS) in production, the only difference to your idea is that we are using ESX as Hypervirosr for the Sun Ray Server and not Virtual Box.
    regards, thomas

  • Acrobat "Send for Shared Review" - Reviewing with Adobe Reader?

    Hello all,
I am experimenting with Acrobat's collaboration function and I think I am almost there...
    1) I built a webDAV server
    2) Authenticated the document with the webDAV server.
    3) Tested making edits to the document locally... in both Acrobat and Reader (I had to Save As Other the PDF as a Reader Extended Document)
    4) Now, I think I have one last hurdle to overcome.
When another user received the test file, I was dismayed that PDF asked the user for the webDAV user name and password. Why? This security information should be stored in the document. It should automatically log into the webDAV server.
Anyhow, once the login information was provided, the reviewer can successfully enter comments into the document. So... sort of success. :]
I just need to solve that login problem because I can't be giving out the user name and password to the webDAV server.
    Any ideas?

    Sabian Zildjian wrote:
Yes,  it is.  Especially just about every WebDAV interface uses SSL/HTTPS to authenticate for access.
I understand that. Perhaps I am not explaining myself (or not understanding your reply)
What I am bothered by is that when the reviewer opens the PDF document, in Adobe Reader, the reader is asked to enter the user name and password of the webDAV server and then they are asked to enter their user name, email address, etc. That is a lot of steps I would love to eliminate in order to make the review process as easy and seamless as possible.
If anything, I would love to embed the webDAV authentication into the PDF.
Shall I presume that you are using PDF Shared Reviews with a webDAV server? Do your reviewers have to first enter the webDAV's user name and password and then second, enter their personal information, every time they wish to review a document?

  • ThinkPad X230 in Hand, First Thoughts Review

I'm the lucky recipient of an early ThinkPad X230, it's a review I got yesterday and have had about 24 hours to mess with now (well, I did sleep, so make that 16).  Happy to answer any questions, I'll copy and paste below much of what I wrote in the preview on LaptopReviews.com minus some of the images and video to be bandwidth friendly.
Earlier this week Lenovo announced the ThinkPad X230, a 12.5” screen ultraportable targeted at business buyers. While the X230 won’t go on sale via Lenovo.com until June 2012 (keep an eye on this X230 product page for availablility) we were lucky enough to receive an early review sample to try out. As most of you familiar with the ThinkPad brand know, change is generally slow from one generation to the next to keep the enterprise buying folks from getting all worked up. One thing that certainly almost never changed much was the keyboard. Until now that is.  The X230 and the rest of the ThinkPad line have adopted a new keyboard styling that uses an island style key layout and drops down to six rows of keys from seven. There are a few other changes and added features, the keyboard backlighting being my personal favorite, but for the most part the X230 is just an evolution of the X220 design wise and of course has updated internal components to boost performance.
    Keyboard Comparison with X220
Let’s jump right to the part a lot of people are interested in hearing about -- the keyboard.  Again, a video helps to show exactly what the visual differences are so we’ll show that first and then talk about the perceived usability differences:
ThinkPad X220 and X230 keyboard Comparison
The first concern I had was whether the spacing of the keys was the same or different enough to cause a problem getting used to the X230 keyboard.  I was also concerned that the travel distance and feel of the keys would be different.  Rest assured, despite the very different look, the keyboard is very similar in feel to previous generations and the typing differences were really only noticeable to me when I had both the X220 and X230 next to each other and I could test the difference.  Here is what I found to be different in terms of feel, at least as far as my perception goes:
The X230 keys seem to have a slightly lighter touch, you don’t have to push quite as hard to register a keystroke
The X230  key surface area is slightly larger, I don’t have calipers to measure this exactly, but you can see it’s the case.  This is partly why Lenovo is claiming the new keyboard makes typing more accurate.
The X230 keys felt slightly more slippery and not as textured as those on the X220
Keep in mind, those are just the perceived differences in feel.  The layout has changed from six rows to seven rows, which forces a repositioning of keys that could trip up users used to the old ThinkPad keyboard.  To name just a few:
The “Forward” and “Back” browser shortcut buttons above the left and right arrow keys are gone
PgUp and PgDn move from the top row down to above the left and right arrow keys
The Delete button has shrunk and moved further to the edge of the keyboard, which is almost impossible to reach without lifting the hand
Print Screen and Insert are both moved, the Pause button and Scroll Lock are gone
Home and End have been moved and are actually now more within reach of the pinky than before
All media key functionality using Fn + has been moved to the F1 – F12 function keys, this is a good thing and eliminates the scattered nature of media keys in previous generations
There are probably more differences in positioning, but those are the major ones.  I’ll also note that the Enter key is now black instead of blue and they’ve removed the “return arrow”.  In fact, a lot of the icons have been axed to make the look more clean, the arrows on the Shift key, Caps Lock and Tab keys are all gone.  It certainly does have the result of the keyboard looking more plain and clean.
The real test is of course whether your typing is affected by the changes.  I generally type at around 80 WPM so figured I’d do a typing test using this WPM online tool to see how I faired doing the test on the X220 and then the X230.  Look, I’m not here to make an advertorial for Lenovo but I got the exact same 76 WPM score on each notebook and was ever so slightly more accurate on the X230 where I made no mistakes.  Of course, that’s one trial run, but it’s all I had the patience for and figured it was enough to provide anecdotal evidence that most users should transition just fine.
ThinkPad X220 typing test: 76 Words per minute, one mistake made when I mistyped “M” instead of “N” for November (though there is such thing as Movember and it is a worthy cancer charity I might add)
ThinkPad X230 typing test: 76 Words per minute, exactly the same result as the X220 but no typing mistakes
Another new feature on the X230 is the keyboard backlight.  You can toggle between two levels of keyboard backlight brightness or use the ThinkLight positioned in the screen that shines down on the keys.  Here’s a video demoing how this looks and works:
And below is a picture of the backlight set at its strongest level:
Bottom line on the keyboard changes, the usability is still top notch and all of the essential keys such as alpha, numeric and common cursor movement keys are in the same location.  The biggest challenge with changes will be in regards to remapping your brain to find and reach the keys that moved such as Home, End and Delete.  The backlighting option is a definite improvement and recommended upgrade.
    Size and Weight
While the ThinkPad X230 weighs 2.96lbs when you use the small sized 4-cell battery, Lenovo isn’t changing its marketing to call this an Ultrabook.  The thickness ranges from 0.75-inches at the front to 1.05-inches at the back due to the slope.  The 1” thickness is fat compared to the 0.68” the upcoming ThinkPad X1 Carbon will have.  That under 3lbs of weight doesn’t hold for the standard 6-cell battery either, this review unit has a weight of 3lbs 7 ounces (3.44lbs).
    Full First Thoughts Review Here

    Thanks for the excellent review.
I am disappointed in the new keyboard choice, outside of the move to chiclet keys the move to 6 rows is just blasphemous.  As a user and owner of 10+ thinkpads, the x220 and t420s will be my last.
Lenovo may not even care as the general business consumer doesn't favor one keyboard style over the other, but legions of thinkpad fans will be left behind.  A sad state of things indeed.

  • Online Review With Adobe Reader and Version Cue

I am trying to set up a review system, and I have been using Version Cue CS3 as the host.
I have had success in setting it all up, and it is all working except for one problem. Any users using Adobe Reader (Versions 7 or 8 ) cannot comment on the files even though I have enabled the PDFs for "Commenting and Editing for Adobe reader". You can comment on the Document if you open the file directly, but not using Version Cue Server, which is browser based. Is there a way to make PDFs able to be commented by Adobe Reader users?
I guess my request is that you enable commenting in Adobe Reader when working in a web based system.

Arwind, sounds like spam to me. If you have a solution to the question, please say so.
Philip, I have had success with Shared reviews initiated from Acrobat 8 Pro and reviewed with Reader 8. There is not much to the process, you only need a shared drive that all users can access. If you have some users that cannot access the drive, then a WebDAV server may be needed, but adds extra complications. I have not had much experience with Version Cue server for PDF reviewing, but am interested in hearing more from other users.
Also, Adobe's Video Workshop has insightful training videos on Version Cue and Acrobat reviewing.

  • Finally landed my first IT job with an MSP! What to expect?

For the first few months and depending on the amount of customers you support, expect a decent size learning curve in becoming familiar with their tech. Also expect that the customers will take some time to get used to you, especially if they are used to dealing with the other staff members. They'll probably take some time to get used to you and some might try to bypass you for support in the beginning...As long as your company has good documentation the other support engineers/staff are helpful, you'll pick things up very quickly and learn a lot. You're in a very good position to have your first job be with a MSP since you'll be supporting multiple, different types of networks. Congrats!Started with my job with a MSP as a tech and am now the Systems Administrator going on 5 years with this company in August lol. Just take your time to...

So I'm waiting on an offer letter for a smallish (20+ employees) MSP that's been around for 30 years if you can believe it. I'm really excited about the job. They seem to be a more high-touch, boutique-y type outfit. Apparently they have no sales staff and rely 100% on word of mouth. I'm not sure how many clients they have but most of them have been with them for years. I would be one of about 6 Service Desk Engineers in a mostly remote support position.I have a BS in IT and A+/N+/S+ certs but not much real experience. The company seems to be willing to take a chance on me and I don't want to blow it. I intentionally chose an MSP because I don't have a lot of time to waste (this is a mid-life major career change) and understand this is the equivalent of getting thrown into the deep end of the pool without any floaties. My goal is to...

  • How do I sync my new ipad mini with my old ipad 2, without losing any apps or data in notes?  I need step by step instructions for first-time sync with ipad mini.  Thanks.

How do I sync my new ipad mini with my old ipad 2, without losing any apps or data in notes?  I need step by step instructions for first-time sync with ipad mini.  Thanks.

If you synced it many times, you have to have a backup. It's just a question of how old that backup is now. When did you last sync?
First of all launch iTunes on your computer and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices. Do you see any backups for you iPad in that window? If so, how new is the newest backup? That will be the backup that you will want to use. But remember that if you use that backup and it is one month old, you can only restore from that date back in time. Anything that you did on the iPad in the past month will not be in that backup.
Turn on the new iPad Minin and start activating OTA via WiFi. You will get to a certain point in the process where you will be given the choice to Set up as new, Restore from iCloud - or Restore from iTunes. You will want to select Restore from iTunes.
That is the short and sweet version. There are step by step instructions in this article. This applies to the mini as well as the iPad 4 or the iPad 3 for that matter.

There is no problem about using one ID for iTunes, iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match, and another for iCloud and its email and syncing facilities. This way you can all use the same iTunes account but have separate emails and calendars etc.

I have a First Gen IPad with IOS 4.3.2. It let's me manage my music and videos together in playlists.  Need a larger capacity IPAD, that allows me to manage playlists the same way. Need direction or help!
Can't seem to find an IPAD that let's me control my playlists together...or let's me organize my videos (Karaoke) the way I want to.  Can someone help or direct me?
    Can't even find the old IPad for sale...I have a MB292LL with 4.3.2 (8H7)

    Here is a hint, google:
    ipad video playlists
    Found:
    This discusses some options.
iOS 7 took away the ability to play videos continuously.
    Two stand-alone apps.
    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/video-playlist-manager-lite/id399302583?mt=8
    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/joobik-video-playlist-player/id502325425?mt=8
There was a hint of relabeling your videos to music video so you can use the itunes video playlists.
    I have not tried this.
