My first Kernel Panic, what should I do?

I've had my new MacBook Pro (17" 2.33 GHz, 2GB ram) since April 14, 2007 and I had my first Kernal Panic today. Since Apple Care is now closed for the day, I was wondering if anyone knows what I should do--if I should talk to Apple Care about this yet, or wait until it happens again. I was in Safari, when it stalled and I got the message that I wasn't connected to my wireless, so I clicked on to the Airport to see if I had lost my wireless connection, and then I got the screen that says to hold down the power button in multiple languages. When I rebooted, it asked me to tell Apple what I was using when the KP happened.
I have bootcamp and Xp Pro loaded but not much more since this is all relatively new to me. I do have the Apple bluetooth keyboard and wireless Mighty Mouse installed and working.
I would greatly appreciate any help or comments!
I've copied the panic log below:

  • First Kernel Panic - failed Disk Utility volume repair - Help?

    Hello!
Well, you've seen the subject. 2 nights ago, after a long day of iTunes, Photoshop, Final Cut Express, and Halo, my powerbook had it's first kernel panic. When? When I unplugged my Lexar JD Lightning flash drive. I had just copied about 200 MB of music onto it (to copy to my imac), and ejected it. Instant panic.
Well, after a reboot, I ran disk warrior on all of my external drives - 2 USB (Western Digital 120GB, Iomega Exite 80GB), my Seagate 400 GB combo drive (Firewire), with 2 volumes, and my 4G clickwheel iPod - well, it's FAT32, so it didn't check it. (For use copying files to our winbox)
It worked properly, until I tried to repair the Iomega drive. It froze. Force reboot.
So, now I ran disk utility on my internal drive. While it was running, Backup started, and everything locked up. Force reboot again.
It rebooted and loged in just fine, so I restarted to the OS X install DVD (the one that came with the Powerbook - 10.3.7). I ran disk utility on Macintosh HD (boot drive). Permissions verification showed a few "special permissions". Permissions repair worked just fine. Disk verification found issues, and repair didn't work. It gave the following error while running:
"Invalid leaf record count. Should be 1 instead of 302"
In big bold letters, repairs failed. Odd, it checked 2 volumes -
    at the bottom, it said
"Repair attempted on 2 volumes: (green text) 1 HFS volume repaired. (next line, red) 1 volume could not be repaired.
Right above this, in the progress window, it stated:
"The volume Macintosh HD was repaired successfully"
So, what? Is the second volume the install DVD?
My powerbook is running just fine, so I ran backup again. (the .Mac backup application from Apple)
Then, I ran Tech Tool Deluxe (3.03) - included on the AppleCare CD that came with our Applecare subscription for my Powerbook. It found no issues at all.
So, i'm clueless. I have not noticed any other issues. At least, since the issue.
Before this happened, I've noticed a few glitches. One is that iTunes has slowed down, particularly when changing tracks. The other is the menu bar battery indicator - sometimes it disappears - rather, the indicator. The space that it occupies in the menu bar remains empty, until you click on it - then it shows up fine. What's odd is that it's only the text - it's otherwise just fine.
What happened before the issue began? Well, I installed a new PNY ram card back around Easter - if that's the culprit, shouldn't it have shown an issue before now? Second: Installs. A few widgets, and a couple of applications: OS 10.4.7 and all other updates Software Update had to offer, Toast 7.1 update, Comic Life's new Universal version (a minor update, actually), Microsoft Office update (heh, probably that), and the trial of Salling Clicker - it's quite cool - Macworld (Aug 06 - new issue) gave the right rating (5 mice!). I dont' run permission checks enough, I know.
A while back, (like 10 months ago) my Powerbook wouldn't go to sleep. It turned out that it was one particular USB 2.0 hub - disconnecting it solved the issue. Its not unlike how my Seagate FW drive will keep my iMac from booting properly every now and then.
    So, here are the questions:
    1. What is the "leaf record count"? Is it very critical? Is it part of the physical HDD, or the system?
    2. Powerbook's running fine, and no other issues. Is it okay to run?
    3. If I need to repair/reformat (eventually), will it be sooner or later?
    4. This seems rather odd, and very intermittant. How do I find out what the issue is?
    5. What is the second, mysterious volume? Macintosh HD is not partitioned. (Could it be Classic?)
    6. if the SMART status of the internal drive reports just fine, could it be missing something?
    Thanks,
    Daniel
15" 1.67 Powerbook G4 (non-HiRes), Slot loading iMac DV SE   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1G RAM on PB, 384 MB iMac.

Techtool Deluxe you want to be running version 3.0.4. Version 3.0.3 is not compatible with 10.4 and may be causing the leaf count issues. Here's the link to get an updated Techtool Deluxe:
    https://support.apple.com/techtooldeluxe/main?id=dl
My suggestion is to start to simplify everything here. Leave everything disconnected from the machine, and boot off the Disk Warrior 3.0.3 CD, and repair the internal drive first. Use the Option key to boot:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106178
Once you are able to do that, then see if you can repair the external drives.
RAM issues can crop up at anytime, and without warning. No test can detect all bad RAM, but once detected, then you know it is accurate.

  • My first kernel panic -- on my 3 week old MacBook

I just had my first kernel panic -- on my 3 week old MacBook. I just downloaded CoconutBattery last night. Do you think that could've caused this? To add insult to injury, I just called Apple, and Apple Care is already closed at 5:20 PST. Lame.
Here's the log. Does anyone have any suggestions on what may have caused this? thanks

  • First kernel panic - possible to identify the cause?

I experienced my first kernel panic today, well the first that I'm aware of, while working on a piece of music in Logic. I've had this iMac for over 3 years with no similar problems. Logic was busy importing a bounced track in mp3 format and creating an overview when the whole thing froze up and I got the message saying "Your computer needs to be re-started etc." I will say that I'd had a problem recently with drum samples causing Logic to crash but this has just been resolved, to the best of my knowledge. Perhaps it is related though.
I installed ProtectMac Antivirus and ran it after the panic. It did find one trojan in my mailbox, which I deleted. Could that have caused it?
Here is the report that came up just after I re-started the machine. It means nothing to me but perhaps someone knowledgeable about such things could cast their eye over it and tell me if there's any clue here as to what caused the panic. Otherwise, any advice etc. would be welcome.
    Thanks.

My assumption is that the panic occurred in this extension: com.mhlabs.driver.MobileIOAudioDriver. This appears to be a third-party extension installed by a third-party application you are using. I don't know off hand if the extension is supporting a third-party peripheral.
Another clue to the item is com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard. This extension is related to something called "Pace Support" and owned by "paceap."
hopefully these clues can tell you what third-party software is involved. I would then uninstall the software to verify that the kernel panics stop. If a peripheral is involved be sure to disconnect it from the computer.
It's possible the panic was a glitch, so if it isn't recurring you might just forget about it, but report the incident to the third-party developer of the software/hardware.

  • Got my first kernel panic last night...

Last night, I got my first kernel panic on my mbp c2d. I've had it for about 3 months. At the time, I was downloading a file and surfing the web. I clicked on a youtuble link and all of the sudden i got that grey screen where it says to restart.
Right after the kernel panic, I restarted as it said and did a repair disk permission and it said it repaired a a flash player plugin or something like that. Do I need to worry about anything? I'm not very good with computers, and this has me a little worried. It seems to be working just fine. Thanks!

    here is the actual log.

it actually had something to do with the wireless airport. i found this document: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303712
    but i'm already running 10.4.8
i also had to do a disc repair. verify disk found one error. everything seems fine now. what did i do to get the kernel panic? i don't want another.

  • First kernel panic! I'M PANICKING never mind the laptop!

    Hi all,
Well (I think) my faithful Macbook 13" just had it's first kernel panic.
I've copied the panic log below: I was just wondering whether anyone would be able to tell me what caused it? I'm just worrying that my mac is dying now even though it seems to be running fine now. I'd just like to know what happened so I can prevent it from happening again. (And I have no idea what all this means)
Thank you to anyone who helps

    Welcome!
I can't interpret the log, but here's some tips.....the +Apple Hardware Test+, mentioned in the first link may shed some light.
Bad or incompatible RAM is, more often then not, the cause of most Kernel Panics. It could also just need to be reset.
Here's the most used site for Resolving Kernel Panics. Please do all the steps in order, even if you don't think you need to do a certain step.
Here is a great MacFixIt article.

  • My first Kernel Panic

I had my first Kernel panic on this PB. I bought it last May...has worked flawlessly until this afternoon when I turned it on for the first time today and immediately after desktop came on I got the black box message in 5 languages to "hold down power button " etc. No additional hardware has been added to this machine. I am running 10.4.5

Any ideas what may have caused this???

Even if you didn't log in, the kernel extension for the Cisco Client still loads, and the panic would occur at that time.
As Maxit suggests, take a look at the panic.log file for other clues. I'm no expert at reading panic logs, but once in a while something sticks out that's worth following up on.
The DIY instructions for replacing RAM modules on the 15" PB are here:
    http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/pbg4/pbg415fw800mem.pdf
Just because the problem hasn't recurred, doesn't mean that it won't come up again. On the other hand, anomalies do happen. Being aware that there may be an issue isn't ignoring the issue. Sometimes the only proactive steps one can take are keeping everything up to date, and running a clean system. When panics occur, it's always a good idea to run Disk Utility's Disk Repair tool from your Install and Restore DVD, or fsck -fy from single user mode or Disk Warrior just to be sure directories are in order.
    Good luck!

  • First Kernel Panic ever - and dont't know why...

Hello NG, Monday evening I encountered my first kernel panic. My wife was uploading some pictures to order copies made and suddenly: "You have to restart... etc.". I posted the logfile below. Does anybody know the reason for this crash ? The process responsible for the crash seems to be this one:
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task
    And the complete logfile:

    Guys,
I'm not really worried about this since it's my first Kernel Panic in 3 years. But, if you have any idea why it happened based on the log below, I'd like to know, so I could avoid doing whatever I did wrong... thanks.

when i start my i pod touch(3rd gen) screen appears to shake first while starting what should i do to repair this ?

I really do not understand your problem. Here are the standard fixes.
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    -  Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • Kernel Panic - what procedure should I follow?

    Hi,
I was working on an e-mac and I was wanting to get iTunes 6. I am running Panther 10.3 and when i tried to download the new ITunes. I was told I didn't have the right software. I therefore went to the Software Update in the Apple icon at the top left and performed the software update. I selected the Apple downloads I thought I needed. After downloading them the Kernel Panic happened. The screen is black with the Apple symbol but when trying to restart nothing happens.
Perhaps I didn't download all the right software. Also, perhaps ITunes 6
needs Tiger - is that right? I got the Tiger update disk and have overinstalled that but nothing has helped.
I think the computer is a 768Mhz Emac with 384 RAM but I can't get to look at it as it won't start. As it is an Emac I don't think there are no PCI cards or any extra hardware installed.
Is there a standard procedure I should follow when I get a Kernel Panic? I'd really like to sort the problem without losing everything installed on the computer if possible.
    Here's hoping you can help,
    Thanks,
    Hoodledoodle

    Heather,
If the tips in AxL's helpful post don't work for you and you need to follow up on iFelix's mention of reinstalling via an Archive and Install Feature, a few points to emphaize:
-- when updating the OS (in your case, to get to 10.3.9 to use iTunes 6), it's a good idea to download and use the stand-alone Combo Updater.
-- after the 10.3.9 Combo updater is is place, use Software Update to ID applicable security updates and install those only. ITunes 6 I believe requires you also update to QuickTime 7.0.3; do the QuickTime update as a separate step.
-- applying one major update at a time takes longer than applying a bunch at once, but it makes your life easier in terms of troubleshooting, and it avoids the possibility of some combination of simultaneous updates doing something the programmers never foresaw.
-- after each major software update (OS, security, QuickTime, etc), after the computer restarts, open Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions on your hard drive.
-- Remember that the progress therometer bar on 10.2/10.3 will typically go to 100% and stay there for an extended time while the Installer reports 'optimizing system'; it's not really stalled, and force-cycling the power switch at that step will likely hose the System and require one to start over. This bites people occasionally (espcially if you're on the fourth upgrade step in a row at 3 AM local time).

  • First Kernel Panic!!

I just my first ever Panic Report. The computer is 2 years old and I have never received a panic report before. I was on Skype when it happened and I see something below referring to Skype. Could Skype be the cause? Can anyone help me figure out why my computer would have panicked? Anything I should be doing to make sure it doesn't happen?
    Thanks!

    Hi Molly,
One KP, I wouldn't worry about it. Have you added/changed any hardware/software lately? Is everything up to date? At least 15% free space available on HD? Repaired permissions sometime in recent memory? Verified disk?

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may have a logic-board defect covered by this recall.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present. However, according to reports, some units may pass the test, and yet still be deemed eligible for repair under the program. Your experience may vary.
Print the first page of the panic report, if any, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the recall only applies within three years of purchase. After that, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
The model was discontinued on February 24, 2011, so the recall has nominally ended. Some units may have been sold after that date by Apple as refurbished, or by resellers as new, and they should still be covered.
Some owners report that their unit was repaired under the program after the deadline had passed. Others report that the repair was covered by the extended warranty from a credit-card issuer. Again, your experience may vary.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired under the program, and you don't want to pay for a new logic board, you may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching.
If you're dissatisfied with Apple's response, please keep in mind that no one here represents the company or can help with customer-service issues.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • RAM kernel panics -- what's your story?

Been reading about quite a few instances of kernel panics caused by bad RAM modules. I suddenly had two kps this week out of the blue ("Uncorrectable Fbd memory error detected"), no luck diagnosing the problem yet but I need downtime from all my projects to give it some attention. I have 3rd-party modules from OWC, but I've also heard that Apple modules can be bad as well.
I'd like to hear from any of you who have had kernel panics related to bad RAM and if you've had any luck in figuring them out -- if so, what finally worked for you?
    My specs:
    Mac Pro 2.66
Apple stock RAM 512mb modules in slots 1 and 2 of Riser A, OWC 512mb modules in slots 1 and 2 of Riser B.
Apps running during kernel panic: Final Cut Pro, Safari, TimeOut!, Console.
Misc: G-Raid 1TB plugged into front FW800 port. 2nd internal drive is 500gb Seagate.
Tests run: Rember and Applejack, no probs found.

Thank you all for responding, I really appreciate the advice. It's so frustrating that bad RAM can't be isolated any easier than going through all these steps.
I ran Memtest last night in single-user mode so it could check the max amount of RAM at once (1.9 out of 2gb). I let it cycle 3 times: nothing.
I'll try re-running the AHT with looping but from what I've seen the Hardware Test rates far below any of these other tools for finding RAM problems.
I'm going to re-seat all my modules and riser cards tonight, see if that helps; the service guys would do this anyway so I might as well do it first to see what happens.
Clearly replacing the RAM is in my future, but what if I can't identify which ones? I have to call both Apple and OWC and I'm worried they'll both blame each other's product.
    JK
