My fix for slow boot after Leopard Upgrade
I was having the same issue as a lot of others in posts about extremely slow boot up times after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard. I spent a lot of time on the phone with Apple Support but in the end I stumbled across a fix for my situation.
After power up and getting to the login screen (about 5-6 seconds), it would take about 3 minutes to fully populate the desktop after entering my password. Most of that time just sitting at the login screen. Extremely painful.
My MacBook connects to a Windows Active Directory network. I was able to fix my slowness by disabling the Active Directory service. I was concerned at first but my bound volumes still work. I don't use a lot of AD services from my Mac so I at this point I have not found any issue with this fix.
To disable, go to Directory Utility, select services and if you have Active Directory enabled, disable it.
My boot time increased from 3 minutes to less than 15 seconds. Better than Tiger.
Tech Support is aware of this issue and has reported it the OS team for a fix.
Hi-
Do you have a Tiger volume to test your machine with?
Do you still have video in Tiger?
If you don't have a Tiger volume to test on, I would consider such as an important troubleshooting step
So now I am wondering if it is the PCI slot that suddenly stopped working after the OS upgrade. Does anyone know if this is a documented issue and if there is a fix for it?
There are no issues with the AGP slot in relation to an OS version.

Powerbook won't boot after Leopard upgrade.
I'll get the apple logo and spinning gear, then blue (kernal panic) screen, and that's as far as it will go.
I thought I recalled a problem with the Unsanity application enhancers, so I started the PB up in target disk mode and removed the one .ape...that didn't help...now I need help.
I've searched around here but cannot locate a similar discussion.
thanksHi Limnos...My profile says 10.4.11 since I have not gotten 10.5 to install yet. Never before had 10.5 on this PB. I was attempting to upgrade to Leopard from the retail install disc, but after the process concluded normally, the restart hung with a blue screen kernal panic.
I attempted safe boot and it would not do that either. I attempted to restart off the install DVD again, and it would not do that either. It would only boot into target disk mode. I have not tried anything else today, yet. Waiting for some advise from here, before I spin my wheels any more. -

<Email Edited By Host>Hi RobertRak
I can only say I have a Samsung SSD 840 EVO 1TB installed in my MacBook Pro 17”. Speeds are exquisite: Write: 479.1MB/s Read: 508.9MB/s
Like Melophage, I left the Optical drive in place.
My only thought for your case is to check firmware of the Samsung SSD drive.
Samsung SSD website: http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/samsungssd/downloads.html
I think i used DiskUtility to clone the ISO to USB flashdrive or CD-RW. It was a challenge to get the Mac to boot from their DOS, but once successful you should get to the latest firmware. The Samsung needs to be in the internal SATA connection.
Be aware that the POST check your Mac does on startup will always take time. Depends on amount of RAM, how long your other internal spindle drive takes to get to speed and unpark the heads etc.
Can't say i've counted the boot time on mine. I know it's quicker now since putting the SSD in.
You will need at least 10% free space left on the boot SSD too BTW.
Hope this assists.

Possible fix for slow shutdown in Leopard
After messing with a slow shutdown issue on a mini and mac book pro (clean install and intel on both), I finally found a solution for the shutdown taking anywhere up to two minutes.
I noticed that if I logged out first, then shutdown my shutdown time was back within reason. If I killed any extra processes running under my name before I shutdown it would shutdown within about 5-10 seconds. The two processes that solved my shutdown issue were: ituneshelper and tunnelblick.
It looks like the shutdown issue for me has something to do with the shutdown process somewhat hanging on user processes running when a shutdown is initiated. Try killing non-essential programs running under your name in Activity Monitor and see if that speeds up the shutdown.
For some reason checking the ituneshelper and tunnelblick login items under Accounts did not stop them from starting up. I had to completely remove them from the login item list.
Hope this helps someone out there. If you literally "checked" them, meaning the checkboxes, that only affects their visibility. To remove them, select one and then click on the "minus" part of the "plus minus" at lower left.

Which Disk for Disk Utility after Leopard upgrade?
Greetings,
If I need to run Disk Utility from the DVD, which disk should I use? The original disk that came with my iMac when I purchased it, or the Leopard install disk that I upgraded to a little over a month ago?
Thanks in advance - ScragsIf the earlier Disk Utility didn't try to "repair" anything. then the Leopard Disk Utility should still work.
If the older Disk Utility tried to repair a Time Machine volume, it might remove folder hard links. The Leopard Disk Utility would have no way of fixing that. -
Fix for slow response after a few hours of idle
Recently my 10.6 10.75 iMac began running ultraslow after sitting idle for an hour or two. If I am very patient I am allowed to close apps and shut down. Them I wait for the startup to complete and slowly shut down without opoening anything several times. Evenutally the response speed returns to something like normal.
Definitely seems to happen after sitting idle. I was using a mosaic screen blanker and have now switched to one of the less intensive screen savers.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Photoshop 7.0 not opening after Leopard upgrade
Several months back I upgraded to Leopard and had that login & keychain update error which is now fixed. However for some reason after the upgrade I am unable to open my Photoshop 7.0. Has anyone else had problems opening existing programs before the upgrade? And if so, how did you fix it? Or should I just try to re-install the Photoshop from the CD?
Thanks, ChristieCLM wrote:

Which upgrade caused this to happen? There have been quite a few since 10.5.1.
I would also check with Adobe for any updates. -
MacBook not booting after RAM upgrade
I'm sorry if the case has been already posted.
Yesterday I took my MacBook Alu unibody late 2008 to a RAM upgrade (from 2 to 4gigs) to an offical Mac Reseller. They installed it and showed me that the system loads properly and recognized the new RAM.
I took it home, started working on After Effects and Photoshop and when i wanted to check a video on Quicktime, this program refused to boot.
Then photoshop freeze and after effects did so. I quited all aplications and restarted. On restart after the 'bong' i've got the grey screen white an apple logo and a loading bar underneath, that was it, it never finished loading but shutting down.
After the 2nd try the computer gave me the BAD RAM alarm signal right before the start button was pressed and nothing more. I just managed to start it ONCE on safe mode, but this one also freezed and colapsed.
Today i didn't get the BAD ram alarm but the grey screen and loading bar after shutting down.
I took it back to the reseler, the shop boss who did the upgrade wasn't there , the guys on the morning shift placed the old RAM back resulting the same. So they told me it's a software problem, not hardware and might be caused by a failed firmware update or something i did wrong and since i was showed that the system booted after the upgrade i can't complain or argue that they did somethiing wrong.
So basically the want 80euros to check what's wrong with my computer plus the 120 i already payed them for a RAM that doesn't work and of course the repair cost of the computer.
On monday i'll go to talk to the boss, what do you guys recomend me to tell him? i'm frustrated that the guys there treat me like if i broke my computer for beeing stupid and wanted to get it fixed for free, when it clearly broke after they did something wrong on it!
please advice me!
thanks!
Message was edited by: finn bellWhat brand is the RAM? From what you said, it is obvious that the RAM is at fault. I would simply tell them that it is not compatible and return the RAM.
Check the System Profiler to see what it says about the RAM (Apple Logo - About this Mac - More Info) and run this application to test the RAM:

If either shows any errors, print out the results and take them with you to the store. -
OS X - Fix for wifi disconnect after suspend/resume
OS X - Fix for wifi disconnect after suspend/resume
I've purchased a Mac recently and since upgrading to Maverick have been having some problem with wifi after suspend/resume. Looking into the issue, I've found this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5495375 and some people have reported that turning off bluetooth did fix the issue.
For my case, this was not possible, so I've tried to make a little fix, that disable bluetooth on suspend and enable it on wake, but with a 10 seconds delay, in order to let the wifi connect successfully.
Here is my github repo for anyone to look at the code: https://github.com/Setsuna666/osx-wifibtfix
Here is the latest version of the fix, which include an uninstall script: https://github.com/Setsuna666/osx-wifibtfix/archive/v1.0.2.zip
If you have any questions or issues, please post it here so it can be easier for me to keep track of.Installed properly this time:
It appears to work, when I resume from sleep the Bluetooth icon is off (gray) and wifi connects, after 10s Bluetooth icon comes on again.
Here is the correct output:
Antzcrashing-MacBook-Air:osx-wifibtfix-1.0.3 Antzcrashing$ sudo bash install.sh

After Leopard Upgrade, HDTV No Longer Displays Full Screen Apple TV??
Fairly recent Apple convert. iMac is directly connected to HDTV (Mini-DVI to HDMI) and A/V Receiver(Toslink). After Leopard upgrade, I now have a black border, on HDTV, no matter what resolution I choose (worked automatically and perfectly on Tiger). In System Preferences-Display, I am mirroring the displays and have Overscan turned off, because without it, the Menu Bar does not display at all. I am wondering if Apple is trying to force me to buy an Apple TV or if maybe I just need to be patient until the correct drivers come out? Apple told me they were referring my problem to the Engineering Department, but I am not holding my breath. Primary need is to view Photos and eventually rent movies, when HD is readily available. Any opinions, predictions or suggestions on resolving would be appreciated. Thanks!!
same issue here. Don't use it very often so could not remember if it was fine previously thought it was. Hope we get help soon.

Is there an absolute fix for the The Snow Leopard Pixelated (Fuzzy) Icon Bug?
I've never even seen such a thing in SL. That said, it's pretty difficult to understand this so called "bug" without some sort of reference. Do you have a screen shot you could post?
Edit: Never mind. Found more than a few sites talking about this issue. Here's one:

Log Message:
Fix for a bug: After playing a hide effect, a window wouldn't be visible again.
The issue here is that all effects that occur because of HIDE end up calling setVisible() (see EffectManager.effectEndHandler). Window/WindowedApplication was basically left with two concepts of setVisible...the displayObject one and the native application one, and they were out of synch. So setting visible=true on the window wasn?\226?\128?\153t calling setVisible(true) which controls the display object visibility. Now instead of doing our work in the visible setter, we override setVisible() and do it in there.

flex/sdk/trunk/frameworks/projects/airframework/src/spark/components/WindowedApplication. asI run Suse 9.1 Linux, and Suse has a package called lmsensors which by default on my machine gives readings like this:
Code: [Select]
temp1: +27°C (high = +0°C, hyst = +22°C) sensor = thermistor
temp2: +41.0°C (high = +80°C, hyst = +75°C) sensor = PII/Celeron diode
Now that 41C is pretty high for an idle AMD643000+ running at 1000Mhz, 1.08V. Too high, I would say. temp 1 in this case is the SYS temp, temp2 is the CPU temp.
Now, using lmsensors I can duplicate your little trick and tell it that temp 2 is in fact a 3904 transistor. Having done this can I get readings like this:
Code: [Select]
temp1: +27°C (high = +0°C, hyst = +22°C) sensor = thermistor
temp2: +16.0°C (high = +80°C, hyst = +75°C) sensor = 3904 transistor
Problem is, I'm not sure that the sensor is actually a 3904 transistor! The number's lower, but I was pretty sure that the sensor in the AMD64 is in fact a diode. Also, surely the CPU temp can't actually be that much lower than the SYS temp.
So, I think your fix succeeds in giving lower temps and that's great in that it will tell your system software that the CPU is not overheating, but I don't think it's the solution to high temp reporting. Anyway, as you say, its a solution for people who can't run with system shutdowns due to bogus high temps.
I've been looking at these temp issues with the MSI K8T, and I was thinking the problem was simply a miscalibration. The Winbond sensor chip on my board (maybe the K8N is the same, maybe not) has a sensor temp offset that gets added to the temp coming from the sensor. On the K8T this number is +54C. Funny number I know, but I've "fixed" the problem while I wait for a real bios fix on the K8T by simply reducing this offset to give me a CPU temp that matches SYS temp when idle. I got this information from Mac OS X Leopard Edition book by David Pogue. Here's his possible fix for printing problems in Leopard...Open web browser and enter this address http://127.0.0.1:631. You'll find youself at a secret "front end" for CUPS (Common UNIX Printer System), the underlying printing technology for Mac OS X 10.5. This trick lets your Mac communicate with a huge array of older printers that dopn't yet have Mac OS X drivers. Using this administration screen, you can print a test page, stop your printer in its tracks, manage your networked printers and print jobs, and more–a very slick trick. Haven't tried it yet...anyone who does let me know how it worked!
If you literally "checked" them, meaning the checkboxes, that only affects their visibility. To remove them, select one and then click on the "minus" part of the "plus minus" at lower left.

Mac mini won't boot after RAM upgrade.
Tried installing new RAM in my Mac Mini, 512MB stock to 2GB of Crucial. Followed the directions to a T, grounded myself the whole time.
Things I've tried so far:
1. Resetting the PRAM, no luck.
2. Holding option at start-up, shows no icon.
3. Holding shift, no luck.
4. Holding X, nothing.
How do I get it to accept a CD if it won't boot?Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You clearly have a problem, but you don't describe exactly what that is other than that your mini won't boot after the upgrade. What happens when it starts up? Does it attempt to start and hang up on the grey or blue screens, or does it start beeping at you almost immediately after you try and start it up, and also flash the power light?
If the former, then you may have dislodged a connector while working inside the system, in which case opening it up and checking that everything is firmly connected would be the first thing to do. If the latter, then the beeping/light flashing is the system telling you it has failed the power-on self test and the pattern of beeps/lights indicates why. In your case likely the system can't find workable memory. In that instance, opening the system and ensuring that the RAM is firmly and fully seated would be a good step, and if the mini continues to fail, then replacing the new RAM with the original to test that the system will then start.
It is not likely that anything had damaged your MacOS install in the process of upgrading, thus normally no reason to need to boot to CD as a result of a RAM issue.
