My folders are messed up

When browsing through Finder I noticed that the jpeg/photos seemed to be scattered in folders that didn't make sense. In an attempt to tidy relevant photos to relevant folders (unaware of the dating system and this "Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto library folder") something weird has happened.
All the photos disappered from the library. Not Good
I've managed to import some of photos back to the library from Finder by choosing to open the jpeg in iphoto. But some of them won't open in iphoto - it says "the following files could not be imported. They are an unrecognised file type or the file may not contain valid data" but they are all jpegs?
There seems to be no consistency, some are just 'files' in finder, others are actual pictures. Plus I now have folders labelled 2001, 2002 etc but I only bought the ibook this year and the earliset photos I imported were taken september 2004 and imported in 2005

Hi Seoirse,
Ooops, guess you found out about these....
Two Apple kbs for you to read
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto library folder
About the iPhoto Library folder
The best thing to do now is to just drag that iPhoto Library folder to the desktop.
launch iPhoto and choose to create a new library when prompted.
Go to File/add to Library in the menubar
Navigate to the iPhoto library on the desktop and choose it to import.
Normally, if you didn't move anything around you would get nicely organized dated rolls of your images imported.
since you did some moving around, the import might not be as nice, but will still give you your images.
Just for your info in the Future....
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.

  • IPhoto folders are now sorted by roll instead of date

I recently purchased a new iMac and converted my existing iPhoto library over to the latest version of iPhoto. Now all of my folders are sorted into rolls on my hard drive, instead of by date the way they were in the previous version of iPhoto. Is there a way to undo this mess? I often need to access photos in other applications, and not being able to search by date makes things pretty difficult. I'm not sure where to even begin. Any advice would be much appreciated.

To amplify on what Mike has said:
A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Rolls in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Roll Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library Folder. You can move photos between Rolls, you can rename rolls, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Roll Name using the Info Pane, the Roll Folder in iPhoto Library Folder/Originals will also have the new name.
Put simply, you never need to go into the iPhoto Library Folder - everything you need to do can be done via the iPhoto Window.
    Regards
    TD

  • My Contact Photos are Messed Up

    Hi.
My contacts photo are messed up. My brother's photo is placed in my wife's contact info, while my wife's is at my friend, etc. I am using iPad 2 and iOS 5.1.1 This happens often, so that I removed all photos. Can anyone help?

If you go to your user profile you'll find a list of your topics. Here's the other thread:
Where'd you find that? I went to profile and it only went back one month. Thanks again for your help.
Going to do an re-install tomorrow. Where are all the ID pref folders so I delete everything before the reinstall. 2nd install in less than a month. Very odd. Once with the old HD and now with a new HD.

  • IPhoto '08 libraries are messed up....

Yep, it's true. Here's what's happening. When I go into my Home Folder to Pictures and right click on the Pictures folder and Show Package Contents, all my albums are not there. I have 5, all I can access via iPhoto Library Manager and all open correctly. BUT if I click within the Pictures folder on a particular album, it's the same one that opens up each time- whatever one I opened up last in IPLM is the one that opens up when I go into the Pictures folder. That's issue #1. The other issue is the missing album. It's not listed in the Pictures folder. Once again I can access it via IPLM but not within the Pictures folder- the pictures appear in 2 different folders but they are not 'album' folders- they are regular blue folders. The blue folders are the Data and the Originals folders. That is problem #2. Something is messed up. I am using the latest version of iPhoto- 7.1 (347) and ran Repair Permissions after the update. I will appreciate any insight into this issue, Judy

I use iPLM to manage 12 libraries and do it by always launching iPLM first and then selecting the library I want. I leave iPLM in the Dock and use it instead of iPhoto. I find it cuts the time to change libraries by a large factor and the time to decide which library to open the first thing in the day. I never have to go to my Pictures folder.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • None of my folders are opening

none of my folders are opening. I have osx 10.7.2. i tried restarting and nothing, but when i have system preferneces open its fine. oh and does anyone know how to downgrade back to 10.7.0. i have an update and i dont like it.

Not knowing where your folders are, it's hard to say how you can open folders.  Usually, in the finder window, you click on it, and the contents show up in the next column.
As for "downgrading", it all depends if you have the 10.7.0 installer around, which probably disappeared long ago.  Rarely is there a good reason to downgrade, unless some program is borked.  Each release of OSX improves way more than it messes up.

  • Mail account folders are not synchronized

Mail account folders are not synchronized. How do I do this?

    Ok Istart understing.
There is an issue with icloud Drive, the part called "mail".
I disabled that part and the rules created by experiment were gone.
So I restored my synced rules and smart folders plist in the V2 Maildata folder and all were like before.
So I tried to reactivate the iclodudrive mail part and the problem was again there. The smart folders where gone again and the rules were now mixed with the ones created by experiment.
So I deactivate icloud mail option on my iphone and my ipad, and redone the restore the synched rules and smart folder.
After that all seems to be fine.
Now I have even reactivated the mail icloud option on iphone and ipad.
I suppose is definitely a bug.
I remember that my mac popped up some strange message saying there was a problem with icloud drive.
I will notice if this happen again to see into the log what is telling for real as I suppose that is the cause that messes up my email.

  • MY system folder, including hidden folders are littered with duplicate folders and files with the suffix (from old Mac) How do I remove them

I have a Macbook Pro running Leopard 10.5.8. I had a problem with my my operating system (my fault, I moved a file I shoudnt have) couldnt boot up but was able to boot up from a backup. I managed to repair my original system except now all the system folders, including hidden folders are littered with duplicate folders and files with the suffix (from old Mac).  For the most part the dupes are an exact copy, but not always.  I want to remove them to free up space and cant imagine duplicate folders in the /system/library are not hindering my computer. But I dont know where to start and am afraid of doing irreparable damage. Any ideas

  • How can I delete a duplicate drive in the folders area?

Not sure how I ended up with a shared network drive duplicated under the folders area of Lightroom 3.6.  Maybe it was a user error but now my network drive where I have 15,000 pictures appears twice in the folder area and it is constantly updating (since there are quite a few pictures).
How can I delete the duplicated drive?  I have "removed" all the folders under the duplicated drive (and made it disappear) but the drive keeps coming back as the synchronization process will add all the folders that exist on that drive.
The two drives with "Volume_1" in the name are actually one shared network drive (I only have one).
I actually removed my network drive mapping (N:) to fix the problem but that did not even work; LR still found a duplicate name for the same network drive and started to synchronize (again). Help!!

I found pretty good super users and a solution here:

  • I have an iPhone 4 on IOS5. I signed up for itunes match. After everything uploaded to the cloud, my songs are messed up. I'll select a song and the title will show with the right art work but a different song will start playing.  Anyone have a solution?

I have an iPhone 4 on IOS5. I signed up for itunes match. After everything uploaded to the cloud, my songs are messed up. I'll select a song and the title will show with the right art work but a different song will start playing.  Some songs won't play at all even though they do appear in the itunes store. The artwork almost always shows u blank until you turn it to landscape then it will appear. Anyone know what's going on?

I have found that scrolling through the album list (past albums without art) triggers the progress wheel next to the wifi symbol. You can scroll quickly through the whole collection and then wait! Artwork will appear gradually...
However, repeat visits to the Music App might initially show no artwork again, but it might spontaneously appear more quickly this time. The bad news is that the whole Music App is now sluggish as ****...

  • How can I create a mail folder where my gmail folders are

Hi all, I have Mail with my Gmail account. My 'labels' have appeared as folders in my Mail. That's all great and I've learned how to use them effectively so that they all sync when going back to gmail.
However I cannot create a new 'folder/label' where all the others are. I can only create a new folder as a subfolder and then move it.
Is there a way to create another 'folder/label' where the existing ones are.
See this screenshot, so I'd like to create a folder where 'Adobe' and 'Airmiles' folders are and not as a sub folder of 'Adobe/Airmiles' or of [Google Mail].
Can I do that? I am able to create the folder as a sub folder and then drag and drop where I want it but ideally want to avoid this step.
    Thanks in advance
    Hayley

Not in Mail. If you referring to not having to use the menu, you can click the + sign at the bottom to create new mailboxes. But you still have to fill in the window with location and name. You can right click to create a new mailbox on an existing one, but not in the main account itself and you still have to fill in the info. It would create a sub folder.
You can also try it at the gmail website. There might be shortcuts there.

  • FOLDERS ARE MISSING-on ipod but not on i-tunes any advice?

HI I have been trying to get my ipod updated and it seems as though my folders are missing on my ipod but not on my itunes.
I was using itunes 4.7 with my 4 button ipod(not sure the generation maybe 3rd) and I just updated to itunes 7 hoping to fix the problem. I am still getting the same error message that says my ipod cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for syncing no longer exist. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Elena

I am still getting the same error message that says my ipod cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for syncing no longer exist.
while the ipod is plugged in and showing up in the sourcelist, click on the "Music" tab.
you will currently have "Selected playlists" selected. go through the list of playlists beneath that, comparing them with the playlists that appear in your itunes sourcelist. uncheck any that no longer appear in the itunes sourcelist. check the playlists that you do want to sync to the ipod. click apply.

  • My folders are no longer showing up in Mail

Since early this morning, I have had issues with my iCloud mail account. As of now I am able to send and receive mail fine, but the folders I used to organize messages are no longer showing up on Mail and my iPhone. Has anyone else been having issues similar to this?

I have a macbook pro 10.6.8, that cannot upgrade to Lion. My folders are gone, and now I cannot send or receive email I've tried doing what this page recommended to no avail. So far, mail is working on my iphone and my ipad, and imac, just not my old macbook pro. I keep getting a prompt to log into my mail. When I put in the password it says it doesn't recognize the password even though I'm putting in the correct password. Somebody help.

  • New Folders are Read Only

Logging in as admin with full priveledges and when I create a new folder on the deskop, it's Read Only. Get info displays Read/Write access but new folders are created as Read Only. I can't figure out why. Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply. Have tried repairing permissions with the same result. Do you have the command for creating a folder from the Terminal. I'll try that. I don't know what the umask is but I'll report back. Thanks again for the help. This is very strange.

  • Migrating to office 365/Win 8.1 from Office 2010/Win 7.0 the Outlook Personal folders are missing.

In Office 2010 I had emails archived into private data file personal folders/subfolders under Outlook 2010. My Office 2010 installation was wiped out when I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1. The outlook.pst files are still available. When I installed
Office 365 on my Windows 8.1 system, Outlook 365 picked up the .pst and populated the Inbox and Sent folders, but the archived email personal folders are not present, and also the contacts folder is empty. I haven't been able to figure out where on the hard
drive the personal folders were actually archived (in Office 2010 ) or if Office 365 will even support showing these personal folders.

Problem solved. I found a separate .pst file in my backups that contained the personal folders and the contacts. This file wasn't in the Win 8.1 documents\outlook files folder. So two .pst files are needed; one for the emails and the other for the personal
    folders.
