My full/long review of the new iBook

Okay, so I remember a few weeks ago, everyone was comparing iBooks to other notebooks, to powerbooks, and just about everything else on the market in this forum. I've had mine for a bit over a month and decided to write a full review on it.
So here are the Specs:
1.42GHz PowerPC G4
512K L2 cache @1.42GHz
512MB memory (DDR333 SDRAM)
14.1-inch TFT Display
1024x768 resolution
ATI Mobility Radeon 9550
32MB DDR video memory
60GB Ultra ATA hard drive
Combo Drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
Built-in AirPort Extreme
Built-in Bluetooth 2.0+EDR
Scrolling Trackpad
Sudden Motion Sensor
Yes, this was a special model with the superdrive removed. Read on and i'll tell you why.
So, let's start with basics: why a Mac?
Let's start with the quite famous OSX.
I remember last year, I wanted to find a song on my regular computer (yes, a PC). It took Windows over 3 minutes as it searched each folder for it. Now, with my iBook, I needed a document for a test but I could only remember one of the terms I typed (I didn't remember the file name and did not want to look through 20 documents). I typed the term and by the time I finish typing the second word, the one document appears in the Spotlight. Another consideration is that if you buy a PC computer or laptop and you're not one of the ones who gets it with the computer, borrows it from a friend or gets a pirated copy, you must pay $250 (retail) for Windows XP. OSX comes to $100 and even less if bought with an Apple (although all new Apple computers come with it). I am no computer expert and I have not used previous Apple OSs (like OS9) so I can't compare. There have been several minor freezes when opening several programs or having several windows open but I intend on buying more RAM. Pretty cool features as well. For example, in world book, any word that you double click on will turn into the word's definition on the left side as well as give you the option of hearing the pronounciation. Same thing in the Dictionary. Very, very useful for students. I don't know if this was in OS9 but it's very cool. I really don't want to get into the OSX 'cause we've all seen the ads and read the articles... there really is very little room for improvement in it and the little things that can be fixed are really nitpicking and everyone can tell you that XP is way behind it (and $150 more).
Features
When I bought this, the one thing that would make me go to a powerbook was the videocard. I really don't think that in this day and age, any laptop should come with a 32 MB card. Heck, even some AMD labtops come with 128 MB and cost less than $1400 CDN. But then again, those are heavy, loud, hot and can't stay unplugged for an hour. There are currently only 2 games on the Apple market that can't be played on an iBook, Doom 3 and SW: battlefronts. So, unless you MUST have those 2 games or will be doing intense video editing, the graphic card won't give you a problem but for the record, a 32 MB card in 2005 is not really all that kosher (for lack of a better word).
Yes, the thing is heavy. But my teacher has a 12 inch model that is 2 years old or so and side by side, mine is lighter (he wants to trade claiming that his can be auctioned as an antique one day). The weight isn't really a problem though. I mean, I'm a student and I carry around at least two textbooks and other accessories at all times so carrying 21 lbs. instead of 23 lbs. in a backpack isn't that bad. I take the bus and metro to school so I would never walk with it for more than 20 minutes straight but I have several times and the weight does become noticable. As for size, I usually have my bag on my lap and the iBook is on it. This way, I don't feel the heat of it and it's high enough (about one and a half feet from my lap). My school has several classrooms with those French desks so I put my textbooks on those.
DO NOT expect the casing to stay in perfect condition for long. I am rather gentle with it and there are many little scratche

John, while I appreciate your "full/long" review of your experience with the iBook, do you have a specific technical question about using your iBook? It's not up to me, but unless you have a technical question, the Apple Moderators may determine that this/these post(s) are inappropriate. They may simply "lock" these posts so they're still available for others to search for and read, but they could also be deleted because you don't have a question anyone could answer. Again, I think you provide some important and pertinent information, but it may not be appropriate for the Apple Discussions.

  • How to show the pdf from the iPad in the new iBooks on the Mac Book Pro?

I have several books in PDF format on my iPad 4 but for some reason they persistently REFUSE to appear in the iBooks on my Mac book Pro (haven't checked the iPhones). The new iBooks brags that we can ontinue reading our books where we left from one device to the other, and since most of my interesting books are in PDF, how can I access this feature? What if I create a book with a iBook creator, will it show?
Thank you very much for your answers...

I figured it out (for me anyway) for syncing via USB or WiFi.
My PDFs in iBooks Mac weren't showing up in iBooks iOS & this is how I fixed it - it's syncing seamlessly now
I went to iTunes for Mac
Clicked on my device e.g. iPad
Clicked on 'Books' from along the menu that says 'Summary - Apps - Tones' etc.
    Ticked the 'Sync Books' checkbox
Selected the 'All books' button, making sure that under the menu ('Books') I had selected 'Books and PDF files'
And then pressed the sync button at the bottom right of iTunes. It worked.
It's a 'set it and forget it solution' - after doing this I no longer need to interact with iTunes for syncing PDFs & books. Even when I rename collections on iBooks Mac, it transfers seamlessly across to iBooks on my iPad/iPhone via Wi-Fi.
Hope that helps - it certainly wasn't obvious to me.
    Best,
    Haider

  • Why does it takes so long to download the new version of Itunes?

why does it takes so long to download the new version of Itunes?

Since you cannot download iTunes on an iPod touch, this would not seem to be the correct forum for this question. I'd suggest you post full details of your problem in either the iTunes for Mac forum or the iTunes for Windows forum, as applicable to your system.
    Regards.

  • DVD Studio Pro no longer works with the new iMac. Solutions?

Disc installations in general don't exist anymore and DVD Studio Pro is no longer supported in the new iMac that we have at our office. I used to have Roxio's Toast Titanium as a backup burner, but even that is not supported past mac OS 10.7. Final Cut X has the option to export straight to DVD but the menu options it gives you is so basic it doesn't even look professional. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what they are using now to burn a professional looking DVD. Many thanks

    mlaughbaum,
It seems as though you and I are on the same page struggling. Were you able to find any alternatives to DVDSP or any way to continue using it?
    On-Site Video
I'm considering myself lucky... Though I was unable to install either DVDSP and FCP v.6 on my new iMac, they are both still working on my older iMac even though it too is running ML. I believe this is because I upgraded to ML from Leopard with both already installed.
My only suggestion would be to install Leopard (or the OS on which they were working for you), install FCP, DVDSP and compressor, and then upgrade to ML. Seems like a silly solution but I have a feeling it would work. I'm not doing it because it's working on the iMac that's closest to my DVD duplicator. That said, if I had to, I believe that's what I'd try.
Really infuriates me. My business depends on DVD sales and there really isn't another cost effective DVD authoring solution for the mac out there.
I do wish you the best of luck and would love to hear if you come up with a better solution.

  • My iMessage no longer works with the new is07 update how do I fix this

My iMessage and some of my applications no longer work with the new software update. How do I fix this?

I called Apple Support after trying many fixes suggested online. They directed me to the procedure on the following page:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4268?viewlocale=en_US
I did the erase and restore option they suggested since I had tried a pile of ther things suggested on posts and blogs and they did not work. I even waited the obligatory 24 hours, thus the restore from backup option was what they suggested. I have a 64gig iPhone 4S and it took about 1.5 hours to complete the entire operation seeing that I am using about 54 gigs of that capacity.
Warning: I lost all of my emails and all of the data files from one of my map programs so be sure you have everything that you really need from your phone store elsewhere before wiping your phone. I thought that the backup on my computer would restore everything but obviously NOT.
    Hope this helps.

Well where is your library located now if not in the iTunes folder?  See the links below on what your iTunes folder should look like and put it back together:

  • HT204365 The new IBook version for iPad is not opening PDF files. Is it going to be fixed?

The new iBook 2.1.1 version for iPad is not opening PDF files. is it going to be fixed?

It is not broken. It works for me and it has always worked for me - every version of iBooks in every version of the iOS that I have ever run on my iPad. Therefore - I do not think that it is broken - or it would not work for me - and for countess others using iBooks and the current iOS version 5.1.1.
What have you done or tried to this point in order to get rectify the situation with iBooks? Have you restarted your iPad, quit iBooks completely and then tried again? Rebooted the device? Uninstalled and reinstalled iBooks?
    Anything at all?

  • How do i find the old app to store my books on a old version ipad. the new ibooks wont wont on the device ?

help how do i find the olod bookshelf app to store my books on. I have a older version ipad and it wont allow the new ibooks app

Download the current version of the app on your computer's iTunes so that it's in your purchase history, then on your iPad go to the Purchased tab in the App Store app and you should be able to download an older compatible version of it

  • Why is it taking my iphone so long to load the new io6 maps program?

Why is it taking my iphone so long to load the new io6 maps program
The map feature is taking more than 60 seconds to load when I put in a destination. Before the i06 it would load instantly. What's going on?

"Other" should normally be about 1-2GB.  You may have unnecessary cashe files increasing the size of your backup.  These can normally be cleared by restoring your phone (be sure to back it up first).
Also, the backup time estimate is unreliable at first.  If may end up going significantly faster if you give it some time.

  • Questions about the new iBook

Okay, so I`m a Canadian student and as far as pricing goes, this new 14inch iBook is $400 CDN cheaper than my previous choice (12 PB G4 SD). I went to a store and the size sort of bothered me. I couldn`t imagine doing everyday things on something that small but whichever one I buy, I will buy an LCD as a secondary display so:
    1. Is there anyway to make the iBook have dual display rather than just mirroring?
    2. What major differences are there now between the iBook and 12 PB (aside from video card and a 1.42 instead of a 1,5)?
    3. The new iBook battery life is between 2.5 and 6 hours. Why such a wide range? Is this battery better than the PB?
    Thanks a bunch
    Tal

I went to a store and the size sort of bothered me.
My nearsighted 61 year old father hasn't complained to me one iota of the 12" iBook's size and he could have gotten a 14" but elected for the 12". The display is sharp and clear and I think that really helps overcome any size issues.
    1. Is there anyway to make the iBook have dual display rather than just mirroring?
Yes. However, the way to do this could potentially damage the computer, or make it not work in a future update.
    2. What major differences are there now between the iBook and 12 PB (aside from video card and a 1.42 instead of a 1,5)?
Sudden motion sensor for the hard drive.
    Built-in RAM is more.
    3. The new iBook battery life is between 2.5 and 6 hours. Why such a wide range? Is this battery better than the PB?
DVD Playback and use of iSight can greatly decrease the amount of straight battery usage you can get out of the machine. Following these battery conservation tips you should be able to get the most out of your battery life:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
Whether it is better or worse than the Powerbook I can't say.

Check your trash can on the desktop. The old version is automatically moved to the trashcan. You should be able to move it from the trashcan back to the Apps folder within the iTunes folder. The update that was pushed out was for iBooks to work with iOS 7 not iPhone 5. iOS 7 was released today.

  • Extremely Long Wait For The New Macbook Pro

I ordered a 17" Macbook Pro with the High Res screen and with some other changes. I dont know why it's taking so long; is anyone else experiencing the same thing, or know what's going on? I ordered mine on Febrary 27th and it is said it will ship on the 18th of March but others have gotten theirs already.

I do feel better, today at least. I don't know if this is bad luck, but I got my Macbook Pro 17" Hi Res LED version today. April 1st.... erm.... yeah....
I have it on charge powered down currently, so can not comment on keyboard test, or checking for bad pixels yet. It is about 3 hours to charge a MB Pro battery if I remember correctly with the unit powered off, so no testing for a while.
I would also recommend not getting ram from Apple. I did only because its a special tax law purchase here, so I needed to drop my income (sacrificed pre tax) into the next tax bracket down =) so I did, and I got Apple Care as well. It is a rip off in this country, Apple Care on Macbook Pro costs $500.00! (never do that again either, depending on how many issues if any I have over the life of this 1st Apple laptop).
One thing to point out, the new Apple manual:
    MacBookProEarly2008UserGuide.pdf
No longer mentions anything about the proper charging and "conditioning" of the Macbook Pro's battery when out of the box for the first time.
Missing are the full charge, let rest (used to be 2 hours) after charge with adapter still in, discharge fully with adapter out, let rest (used to be about 5 hours) then charge fully again to calibrate the battery to its IC chip inside that controls it. No hints either that if long-term storing your battery, discharge to 50% and then store it long-term.
Guess that would make all these new first time Macbook pro buyers thing the system is too fiddly?
    Cheers,
    Jan

  • Why is my IBM Scroll button no longer working with the new Firefox?

I just downloaded the new Firefox onto my IBM ThinkPad. This laptop has a center button for the mouse that I have been able to use to scroll down webpages on the previous version of Firefox installed on my computer. However, with the new version it no longer works. Is it because there is a setting that was automatically programed and is something I can change or is the permanent feature of the new Firefox. If it is the latter, then I am disappointed and would rather use the older Firefox version.

Re-installing Pages through Appstore has fixed the problem.
    Thank you
