My G4 Mini no longer sees the optical drive....?

Hello,
Thanks for looking. I have a Mini that no longer sees any optical drive I install. It's an Apple OEM superdrive that the system profiler does not see, nor will any disc mount. I've tried and Apple OEM combo drive too. I'vre reset the PMU and done a "pram" reset too. External DVD-R drive works.. but nothing internally.
Thanks for any help.
Dave

DaddyPaycheck, thankyou for the reply. It appears there might be some physical damage which worries me. But what perplexis me is that the drive receives power... it takes the disk (won't eject it.. even on restart, but it takes the disc), and when I boot into open firmware, I get "unable to eject the drive volume"... or something like that... The point being that it appears to believe that there is a drive, but doesn't know what to do with it.
That being said...it still won't recognize in the ATA of the system profiler.

  • MacBook Air No Longer Sees Remote External Drive

I have an iMac with a FW800 connected external hard drive. I use it for Time Machine backups. Also use an Airport Extreme for wireless connection. My MacBook Air at one time was able to "see" that external drive via the Airport and I used it to backup the laptop with Time Machine. Now, all of a sudden, the MBA no longer sees the external drive. What has happened? I use the MBA only occasionally, and told Time Machine to backup only when I tell it to. So, LOTS probably has changed since the last backup. But, what change has broken this connection? My iMac sees it just fine and does Time Machine backups just fine. When I want to share the DVD drive of the iMac, that works as it should. I just can't see that dang external drive any longer. Both machines are at 10.5.6
Can you folks give me some places to start looking to get things working again?

Does the time machine volume meet the requirements?
-internal drive, not start up disk
    -XSAN volume
    -USB drive
    -fire wire drive
    -eSATA drive
-network server via AFP (from machines running Leopard), including machines running file sharing
the volume must be formated as Mac OS Extended or Mac OS Extended (case-sensitive)
    You can't use:
    -Boot Camp partition
    -iPod
    -disk image
    -AirPort Disk
    -iDisk

i moved the folder containing all of my photos to a new location on my hard drive by mistake. I've moved it back to its original location, but iphoto no longer sees the photos. What step(s) am I missing to allow iphoto to see the photos as it did before. Also,
I am trying to back up all of my photos to a thumb drive. Is there a way to do this thru iphoto?

Witholut knowing what you did, it's hard to know what you missed doing, no?
Try Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
Backing up just the Photos? File ->Export
    Backing up the Library?
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate

  • Long boot time when there's a disc in the optical drive

Windows 7 waits for the DVD-ROM drive to spin the disc when I have a CD in the Optical Drive.
This causes Windows 7 to take much longer to boot when I have a CD in the drive, because it takes about 10 seconds until the DVD drive starts to spin the CD.
Is there a way to make Windows 7 not spin up the dvdrom drive on boot?
    Thanks

  • My 2008 pavillion dv9910us notebook no longer recognizes the optical reader

My 2008 pavillion dv9910us notebook no longer recognizes the optical reader (cd drive)  any ideas how to fix it since I can't put in restore cd to fix it?

    Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Check if the drive is now listed and working.
If it still iit's still missing, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it is now listed and working.

  • Putting a SSD in the optical drive bay of a late 2011 MacBook Pro.

I want to put a large Solid State Drive in the optical drive bay of my late 2011 (Model ID 8,2, 2.4 GHZ quad i7, 8 Gigs RAM, SSD boot drive) using the carrier and drive from Other World Computing.  The "About This Mac" box shows that the optical drive is 6G so I'm thinking that it should be OK putting a 6G drive in that bay, but OWC says that MacBook Pros have only a 3G optical drive capability.  I know this was true on earlier models, but my bay says 6G.   The 6 G SSD's are faster and have a longer warranty.  I do pro audio work and want to record to the new drive with speed and reliability.  Is there any way to prove that my MBPro will handle 6G?  I was told by someone at OWC who looked up my my serial number that it would work, but another tech guy at OWC said they didn't recommend it.  I'm thinking that they just issue a blanket "no" answer to cover themselves against people ordering a 6G drive for a machine that wouldn't handle it.  Before I order a 6G drive is there a way I can know for sure if it will work?
    Many thanks,
    Robert

If the computer is correctly identified as 15-inch Late 2011 MacBook Pro, and not an Early 2011 build series,
according to MacTracker database (http://mactracker.ca download application) optical drive interface supports
the same spec as the hard disk drive...
Hard Drive Interface    6.0 Gbps Serial ATA (SATA)
Optical Drive Interface    6.0 Gbps Serial ATA (SATA)
So should there be an error in identification, that would make a difference. Some Early 2011 models may
have the 3.0 Gbps or 6.0Gbps data rate in the optical drive. All Late 2011 models should be 6.0 Gbps.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Question on Replacing the Optical Drive on my G5?

I'm trying to replace the Optical drive on my G5 Power Mac. The instructions are very clear.
    1. unplug your G5
    2. open it
    3. open the two latches below the drive
    4. slide the drive out of the bay
    5. disconnect all cables
    6. detach the sliders on the bottom of the drive
    7. attach them to the new drive
    8. connect the cables
    9. slide it into place and close the latches
    10. close cover
But my optical drive is stuck solid in the little slides.. It wont budge.
Has anyone got any suggestions who has done this before?
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hi Steve,
Yes, some can seem frozen in place, you need to pry or tap it gently to not so gently to break it loose sometimes, I had to use a screwdriver to jiggle mine loose, have you seen the installation video?

  • Is the optical drive SATA & swappable?

I'm looking to buy a bunch of these now that they've finally updated them. However, the whole thing hinges on whether the optical drive can be replaced with a second hard drive.
Once folks start getting theirs delivered, I'd be interested to know if the superdrive is SATA and if there is room to replace it with a second HDD?
    Thanks.

These folks have already disassembled the new Mini

"Three months ago, we published an article called The State of the Mac mini. In this article, we were the first the mention that the new mini would have a SATA optical drive, making it easier to have a second hard drive in it. It turns out that the optical drive is indeed SATA."

  • Clone no longer sees MBP internal drive

When I boot up from a clone on an external drive, the internal drive of my MBP no longer appears in the Finder -
nor does it appear as a startup disk in System Preferences.
In fact, none of my clones are recognising the MBP any more.
The MBP drive is only 3 months old, and Apple branded, and all drives are formatted OS Extended (Journaled).
Everything was working perfectly until recently - without there being any changes to the setup as far as I know.
Any idea what’s happened, and how to fix it?
    It’s a mid-2009 MBP running 10.9.4.
(I originally posted this in the Mavericks forum, but maybe it's even more relevant here.)

Apple does not produce any drives on their own - so any "Apple branded" drive would be manufactured by a third-party.
Have you tried booting into your Recovery partition (hold down the command and R keys whilst booting) and using Disk Utility to Verify and, if needed, Repairing your internal drive? Does your machine boot with all of your clones as well as your internal drive, but does not show up on the Desktop when booted from a clone? Have you used Disk Utility to see if the machine actually 'sees' the internal drive?

  • Is this normal for the Optical Drive?

I don't know if this has already been asked but....
I am kinda worried about the optical drive on my mini.
Has anyone else noticed that the optical drive on the minis is kinda loud, especially right after you have put in a disk? All disks that i put in the drive make a sound like they are hitting against something, but stop after a couple of seconds.
Also, is it normal for a kind of "fluttering" sound to come from the drive when you are playing a DVD (it happens about every 5-10 seconds but doesn't effect the playing at all)?
And finally, are all minis designed so you have to push a disk at least 5/6 of the way before the drive ***** it in?

    Yes to all questions.
Optical drives these days make a lot of noise. You don't hear it in something as large as a tower computer because the computer has its entire case to pick up the vibrations. With the drive just under the case cover and nothing to make distribute very far, it will make more noise on a notebook or Mac Mini just because of the constrained space.
That said, if put sticky labels on disks, or get extra thick disks that is not very good for slot loading drives. See this article on nonstandard media:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58641
If you want more flexibility with media, external Firewire and USB optical drives exist. http://www.macsales.com/ has a nice selection that offer full compatibility.
