My G4 won't recognize my WD My Book external hard drive.

I've spent an hour just trying to find out how to post a question in the right place. I hope someone out there can help me out. I can't seem to find my exact issue. I just purchased a Western Digital "My Book Essential Edition 2.0 1TB". I have a MacBook 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running OSX 10.4.11 and a 1GHz Power PC G4 also running OSX 10.4.11. My laptop recognizes the external drive without incident, but the G4 will see it in the disk utility, but not in the finder or on the desktop. When I try to partition it or erase it as suggested in some of the discussions here,I get an "input/output error" error message. I have tried it in all of my usb ports which work for everything else. The tech support @ WD had no answers and I'm hoping someone hear can help me. Thank you so much!
Diva B. (after trying about a dozen names and they were all taken, this is what I wound up with, plz don't hold it against me :-))

USB2.0 PCI cards that use the NEC chipset seem to give the least amount of problems for Mac users.
OWC have a few different ones for sale.

Do you also connect the external USB drive to the AC power as well while you use it ?
Sometimes USB external drive problems are resolved simply by plugging them into the mains power and trying again.

  • FCPX won't recognize projects/events on my External Hard Drive

I have all my projects and events for FCPX on my external hard drive because my MacBook Air does not have enough room for it. I've been working on my Air for a couple years and I just got a iMac. I thought it would be simple enough just to plug in my hard drive into my iMac and it would recognize everything, but sadly it isn't. I've looked everywhere and I couldn't find any fixed for it. I can just create new events from my old events but that would take alot of work. I thought there would be an easier way to be able to import all my old events/project and start working on them.
*Also when I create an event on my iMac external hard drive, it puts it will all my old events in the same folder, but still won't recognize them. Stumped
    Thanks

You'll be updating to FCP X 10.1.1.  It uses Libraries now, whole different thing.

  • Powerbook 15" w/ Tiger won't read Maxtor One Touch II External Hard Drive

    Hi all:
For some reason my G4 Powerbook can't recognize my Maxtor One Touch II external hard drive. I am trying to find a firewire cable that fits, as the Maxtor just gave me a USB and says that the cable won't work with mac. I am trying to find a cable that has a "printer type" end and a firewire end. Will it help? Where do I find it?
    Thanks,
    Chris

No the printer type end, won't work in Mac OS X either. The software that is included with One Touch does not work well on Tiger or later. Instead I recommend not using that software, and instead using Shirt Pocket Superduper for backup. Or look for EMC/Dantz to update the drivers for the included software to Tiger. I think the One Touch does have a Firewire 6 pin connector which is Mac compatible. These ports look like the Firewire port on your G4 Powerbook. Port number 2 below is a Firewire port:
You can buy the cable from the Apple Store, or any major Mac mail order shop such as Macwarehouse, Maczone, Macconnection, or even CDW.

  • Itunes won't find 'itunes music library' on external hard drive by default

I have my Itunes library saved on a wireless external hard drive. When I open itunes for the first time after a re-start it won't automatically detect the itunes music library file and I have to point it to the correct folder on the external hard drive. Once I do this everything works perfectly until I re-start my mac and then I have the same problem.
One of my friends has told me that macs won't automatically connect to wireless devices like windows does but he thinks there is some software that enables it to do so. I presume this would sort the issue out or alternatively any other suggestions are very welcome.
    Thanks for any help

Your external HD needs to be mounted before launching iTunes or iTunes will create a new blank library on your startup drive.
You can add your external HD to the list of startup items in  > System Preferences > Accounts to avoid this problem.

  • How to get iMovie '11 to recognize events and projects on external hard-drive?

Hello, my old iMac recently crashed and i bought a new one.  I have restored all of my iMovie files from an online backup service to an external hard-drive.  Now, I would like to add all of these events and projects into my iMovie library on my new computer.
So far, I have tried File->Import->Import Movies and then browsed to the Movies folder on my external hard-drive where all of my iMovie events and projects and videos are stored.  However, iMovie will not recognize that this folder contains any iMovie files.  Only if I browse down to each individual event folder will it then recognize and begin importing the file.  Is there anyway to get iMovie to recognize all the folder, files and events as it was on my old computer and not have to re-import everything event by event?  Thanks for any help you can provide!

    Hi
You must do this the right way.
    • EXTERNAL Hard disk - MUST - be Mac OS Extended formatted
Nothing else will do - for VIDEO !
    • The Moving of Event's and Project's - Must be done within the iMovie Application
Folders named iMovie Event's and iMovie Project's - can not be moved via Desktop/Finder - as links back to iMovie will break and can not be mended.
    My general note on this:
    Moving Event's and Project's
Connection - Either connect one Mac in Target mode to the other via FireWire. Or use an external hard disk !
(Target-Mode - Start one Mac e.g. laptop - BUT keep T-key down during full up-start - Now a FW-symbol is jumping around the screen and it will work as an external hard disk when connected to the other Mac)
    A. The External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work for Video. UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most other things but not for Video whatever program is used (iMovie or FinalCut)
    B. Should be a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up
    C. Do never Move or Alter any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder - as this will result in iMovie losing connections to them and repair can be anything from hard to impossibly.
    D. Moving and Copying must be done within iMovie application and Events to Events - and - Project's to Project's.
    E. Moving Project's to Event's - Do not work for me - I have to export project as a QuickTime movie then Import this into Events.
Event's window can show two faces
    Like this
    or like this
from one hard disk Event - You can move it to the other hard disk
You can not (at least not me) move Event to Project or other way around only
Event to Event and Project to Project
    Yours Bengt W

  • ITunes Won't Recognize My Music Library on Ext Hard Drive

    Hey All,
Just got a iBook G4 and I'm trying to access my music on iTunes, but I can't. Is there a trick I'm missing here? I set the folder location to the Ext Drive, but still nothing. Everything work with out issue on my old iBook G3.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Pointing iTunes to a folder simply tells iTunes to put all new music there. You need to File -> *Add to library* then select that music folder.

  • Sol 2.6 (Intel) install won't recognize more than 8GB of my hard drive

<also posted under the 'Intel platform' topic>
I am trying furiously to install Sol 2.6 on a Dell PC that has a 40GB hard drive. I DOS Fdisk to create one huge partition, which fdisk makes active. When I get to "customize fdisk Partitions for disk" in the
    install program, it shows me:
    1 Other 39070
    2 <unused>
    3 <unused>
    4 <unused>
    Capacity: 8001 MB
    Alocated: 39079 MB
    Rounding error: -31078 MB
    Free: 0 MB
To create partitions, it forces you to delete the "Other" partition first. When I do this, Solaris declares that my disk is now 8001 MB, not 39079 MB.
Due to problems with installing a network card (somewhat desirable for a UNIX operating system), I have gone through this install about 30 times in the last 3 days. At least once, I think I managed to trick
it into using the entire disk, and letting me create the large file systems I need. But I can't get back there now.
Does anyone know how to work around this?

I have the same problem. I can't power up any more than 3 firewire devices or my imac kicks them all off. I have 2 Lacie drives piggybacked on the 800 port and then a powered firewire hub plugged into the 400 port. I can have either another firewire external HD OR an external Cd/Dvd recorder plugged into the hub. If I try both ( or any combination of 2 firewire devices) - the imac kicks everything off firewire, both on the 800 port and the 400 port. All my devices have their own external power supply.
This is a bummer for me. I migrated from a G5 2GB duo with 4 external HDs and an 2nd external DVD writer. My drives are 2 1Ts, a 800 GB and a 400 GB. I do a lot of photography and video editing so I really need the external space. I guess this imac really isn't a Pro model but I didn't need any more speed so I wanted to save the space and money. I think Apple should say up-front that there are significant limits to the Firewire capabilities.
Are any of you you able to attach 4 firewire devices at one time? If so, then I guess my machine is defective! Please let me know.
    Thanks,

  • Why won't Time Machine recognize my seagate 2 TB external hard drive?

    Hello,
I am trying to set up my Seagate External Hard Drive as my backup. When I click on Time Machine, then Set Up Time Machine, Choose Backup Disk, the list comes up blank. Even though my external hard drive is sitting on my desktop available for use. Thanks for the help. I appreciate it.

And then I found this on the Seagate website:
Formatting your drive for a Mac
STEP 1: Open Disk Utility like this:
    Click Finder.
    Click Applications.
    Click Utilities.
    Click Disk Utility.
STEP 2: Select the drive you want to format. Be sure it’s the correct drive.STEP 3: Go to the Partition tab.STEP 4: Click on the Current Volume Scheme drop-down menu and select One (1) partition.STEP 5: Click Options. From the Partition Schemes provided:
Click on the GUID Partition Table radio button.
    --OR--
Click on the Apple Partition Map radio button.
STEP 6: Click OK. Select other options as desired (e.g., Volume Name, Format, etc).
STEP 7: Click Apply. The Partition Disk screen opens.
STEP 8: Click Partition. At this point, the volume dismounts from the desktop and the drive is partitioned and formatted.
Note: When Volumes are created, Time Machine may open, asking if you would like to use the volume for backups. Click Cancel to proceed.
STEP 9: When finished, select the Disk Utility from the Apple Menu and choose Quit Disk Utility.
    And it worked.
Thanks for all the help guys. I appreciate it.

  • Time Machine won't let me back up an external hard drive

    Hello,
I am running time machine to backup onto a 500GB USB drive and keep my iTunes library on a firewire 250gb drive. When I looked in time machine options in system preferences I found that my firewire disk is already listed as 'do not back up'. I want it backed up and don't seem to be able to remove it from that list. Anyone have an ideas why?
    Cheers
    Steve
    PS First ever post!

Are you referring to the drive used for backups, or the drive I want to back up? When I first used Time Machine, my external drive (used to house my itunes library) was on the exclude list. I easily removed it and the TM window reflected the additional contents (indicating a backup of about 75G (27 on internal drive, remainder on external). But backups are being done only on the contents of the internal drive.
I too have re-included the external drive on the exclude list, then removed it. No help. Do I have to reformat my external drive and lose all of my itunes music?
    thanks

  • ITunes 11 won't import .mov video files from external hard drive but will from internal.

    Hi Everyone
I'm having a problem with iTunes 11.0.1. I can't import .mov video files stored on an external hard drive. I can however import .m4v files from the same external drive. Using either the add to library option or dragging files from the finder.
I can add .mov files from the internal though. Strange I know.
The reason behind this posting is that I'm using iFlicks to convert my TV and movies from my external drive for Apple TV and add all relevent meta data, keeping the files on the external drive and having iTunes link to them.
I would like to be able to simply create a general iTune compatiable file using iFlicks which only takes a minute or two per file to convert. I'm currently converting them to .m4v just for the sack of being able to import them into iTunes from an external drive takes 45 minutes per file.
Has anybody else had this problem? Any ideas on a fix to allow me to import .mov files from an external drive into iTunes without copying it to the iTune library file.
    Many Thanks
    Dave

This might be worth a shot - basically seeing if Vista permissions could be the culprit.
Give yourself FULL control and ownership of the exHD, let's call it M:
How to Take Ownership and Grant Permissions in Windows Vista
Take control of the top level folder and ALL subfolders.

  • Why won't my iMac 27" boot from external hard drive?

I have a new 27in Intel i5 dual core 3.6GHz iMac. It works wonderfully.
My question is this. I have a Pleides Ice Cube external hard drive with a USB 2.0/Firewire enclosure with a 500GB hard drive. I used diskutility to format the hard drive as a GUID Partition Table. I then used SuperDuper to clone the iMac OS 10.6.7 and Apps over to it.
I can select the external drive in System Preferences/Startup Disk to boot from, but when booting the iMac gets as far as the white screen then just stops loading.
I have tried both the USB connection and the Firewire connection (with a Firewire 800 to 400 cable).
I have run Disk Utility and repaired the disk and the preferences.
I have used Disk Warrior to rebuild the directory as well, but the iMac will not boot from the drive.
It does boot from the original DVD's and its own hard drive.
My old 24" iMac had no trouble booting from this hard drive or any of the others I have collected over the years, so I am reluctant to think it is the external drive. It is something to do with this particular processor Snow Leopard and external drives.

It sounds like something in the SuperDuper clone might not have copied well. To get the full answer on that I would check with Apple or SuperDuper to see if they support each other.
As a quick test, if you restart and immediately press and hold "option" on your keyboard do you see your external HD as an option to boot from? If so, click it and see if the boot runs any differently, but if you don't see it at all that could show that the problem is more deep rooted.
Personally, if looking in to either of those didn't give me any other info to go on, I would reformat and start the clone again. BTW, do you know for sure GUID Partition is the format you'd want to do this on? Generally macs use "Mac OS Extended" and some external HDs can use "FAT32" (if you want them to work well with Windows)
Hope that gives a little direction
    Alex

  • Itunes won't let me add files from external hard drive

I've been having this problem with my external hard drive and I don't know if it's my computer or iTunes, but I would appreciate any help.
Recently, for some reason, all my songs went missing on iTunes and iTunes would freeze a lot. I reinstalled iTunes and now it's working fine. The problem is, I store my music on an external hard drive and I'm trying to add my files back by going to "Add Folder to Library", but it works every time I do it.
At first, I thought it was freezing because my drive is so big, so I did it folder by folder (organized by artists) and it will work fine for small folders, but if it's a folder with like more than one album, iTunes will crash. At first, I thought something was wrong with one of the music files, but that's not it because it happens with any large folder.
I used to use iTunes Updater, which would update all your songs for you, but now that program doesn't work with the latest version of iTunes. Thanks for any help.

This might be worth a shot - basically seeing if Vista permissions could be the culprit.
