My G5 shut down + when it restarted it won't go past the grey apple screen
here's a general rundown of how I got to this point...
last yr the hard drive on my '05 G5 went, so i had it replaced (6-7 months ago) and for the last 2-3 months i've had problems with involuntary shut downs (cut to black) it started happening once a day and then there were days where it would happen more often and then less often and eventually got to a point where it was happening every 5-20 minutes, so i brought it in to get looked at and was told that it was the power supply that was malfunctioning. I mentioned that I would likely be buying a new mac in the coming weeks ( i did yesterday) and was told that I should be ok between now and then without having it fixed and then when i did get my new computer they would transfer all of my old data onto the new computer and would be installing the new power supply before selling it to a local school. then, 3 days before I was going to get my new mac, it shut off yet again, but when it rebooted it never went past the grey apple screen. after 4 or 5 minutes the fan comes on and is amazingly loud and this is where it stays until i shut it off. i'm not sure if this is simply the power supply finally going going gone or if this has something to do with the very new hard drive or who knows what else; i just want to get my info from the old computer onto the new and hopefully get the couple hundred dollars that i was told my g5 was worth. is there something i can do to get past the grey screen before i bring it in?
thanks in advance,
Jeremiah
I doubt that your data have been lost, the hard drive should be fine. Too bad that you're going to sell it, you could have used the hard drive in an enclosure to back up your new computer to. Please remember to make frequent backups/clones, I use SuperDuper! and it works perfectly. I have used it to re-clone a drive from the external when things have gone bad, you can also boot from a SuperDuper! clone.
Anyway, let us know how things go, I'm pretty sure your drive will be fine.

When i am using the mac. often it will suddenly freeze, only the coloured loading wheel still moving. I will leave it for hours to unfreeze but nothing. The only remedy is to turn it off by the button. Moreover, sometimes when i turn it on it gets stuck at the grey apple screen and i have to turn it off by the button and on again. This can happen up to 10 times until it turns on! What can i do?
Shut down your computer and disconnect all peripherals (keyboard & mouse if pertinent) from your computer. Now reboot.
If the Mac starts up normally, shut it down again and then plug in one of the peripherals (keyboard or mouse first) and start up your computer again. If it does so successfully repeat the process, adding one peripheral at a time until your Mac acts up. At that point, disconnect the last peripheral you added, reboot your Mac and search the peripheral vendor's website for an updated driver.
If no driver exists or the problem remain after installing the new driver, try a different cable or a different port on your Mac.
If none of the above works, again disconnect all peripherals from your Mac, hold down the "shift" key to start up in "Safe Boot" mode.
If the Mac starts up correctly, restart without pressing the "shift" key.
If your computer still does not start up properly, shut it down and restart it while holding down the Apple+Option-P-R keys; keep holding "all 4 keys" down until you hear the startup sound "twice."
If none of the above work Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk.
(If Disk Utility cannot repair, you will need a stronger utility (3rd party) - Diskwarrior or Techtool PRO)
Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.
If you are able to reach your desktop take note of how large your hard drive is and how much hard drive space do you have left?
Remove any 3rd party ram.
Reinstall Snow Leopard - This will install a "fresh" copy of Snow Leopard without archiving old system files but leaves the rest of your files in place.
If your computer is still under warranty or you have Apple Care, take full advantage of it by letting tech support deal with your problems. It's what you're paying them for.
Out of warranty - take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP. Whichever is more convenient for you. -
Hi guys.
I've had my MacBook Pro for 2 years now. Last night it suddenly kept glitching to a dark grey screen every now and then, then it would flash yellow / blue spots, and now it won't go past the grey screen even when I reboot it.
I don't think I can access my disk anymore as I've moved across countries since I've first gotten my laptop. it was working perfectly fine before it kept going to the dark grey screen with a little blue on the bottom.
If it helps, my camera light is still on, and it seems that my computer is working properly itself, but won't go past this grey screen.
I'm a college student and am really panicking about this - can anyone please tell me what to do?
Thank you & sorry for the long post. What operating system are you running on it? (iOS 5.1 is for iPhone, iPad...not a Mac).

When I start up my MAC it won't go past the grey screen. Any suggestion?
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup -
Shuts down when I close my MB. What's the crack?
I've read a bit about this on other threads but I just don't get it.
My MB has done this about 30 times since I've had it. It's 6 months old.
For the last 3 days it has done it every day. Is it getting worse?
There is no pattern to follow. Just sometimes when I close the screen I hear the chime and I open up to the blue start up screen.
Is there any known remedy to this? It's doing my head in.When you close the lid, the MacBook should go to sleep. If you choose "sleep" from the Apple menu, does the MacBook shut down then as well?
If so, it's unlikely you have a hardware problem (since no hardware is involved with the selection of the menu option). You might try try restarting and holding down the "shift" key to startup in "safe" mode. Does it behave the same way in "safe" mode? If not, then you may have a third-party software conflict.
If it doesn't shut down when you choose "sleep" from the Apple menu, it's possible that you have a hardware problem with the switch that tells the MacBook when you've opened or closed the MacBook. Does the MacBook shut down if you put it to sleep first from the menu before you close the lid?

I am running windows 7 on a dell laptop xps 17. This has only started happening recently and the only thing that has been changed on my computer is the update for firefox. At the moment, it will sometimes hibernate when I shut the lid, however, on at least one occasion I could not get it to work, and had to shut the computer down, instead. I don't know what else you might need to know. Please contact me if you need more information or if this is not a browser problem, so that I can look elsewhere for the answer.
I think so...I've been doing some experimenting...the first time this happened, I thought that it was just a glitch in something. After I shut down the computer completely, it doesn't do it...a day or so ago, there was an update applied by firefox and it seemed that it started doing it again after that. However, this doesn't make sense to me. I shut the computer down a while ago and now it is hibernating fine again. I tried shutting it down after I logged on and it worked fine. I've opened firefox and it is still working fine. I've also opened my outlook and it doesn't appear to be causing it. I believe that something I am opening might be doing this even though the program itself is shut down, although I have no idea how unless the computer believes it is still on. The only other program I run, is MSWord and MSN messenger, which is open now and I can still hibernate. I figured that the this was a long shot but thought I would ask. So I think the answer to your question is yes, it happens even when I don't have firefox open. I've shut everything down and tried to hibernate it and it won't do it once this starts happening. I'm completely out of ideas.

HT6147 why did my iphone 4 shut down when i went to update my phone to the
i went to update my iPhone 4 to the new iOS 7.0.6. the update completed but instead of my phone coming back on it said that i had to connet it to iTunes. i connected my phone to iTunes and it said that my phone was in recovery mode and needed to be restored. so i clicked on the option to restore my phone and it still didnt do anything?? my phone is still stuck on the screen that tells me to connect it to iTunes.
It's happening to me right now. I saw a couple of answers in other forums. Don't worry, it should just be a minor problem so it's okay. I've tried rebooting the ipod a couple of times but it still doesn't work, I guess what you have to do is delete the photo and try again - If it isn't a screenshot photo but a photo you've just taken and you don't want to lose it, I guess you should just screenshot the photo FROM the photo to sort ofduplicate it. That should help you crop the photo. I screenshotted a wallpaper sort of thing and when I was trying to crop it, the screen turned black and had a loading sign in the middle, then, it turned white and restarted the whole ipod. I was pretty worried, the crop function works for most of my photos except for a few, after a couple of attempts, I would suggest screenshotting the photo if it was taken with camera. If it's a screenshot, simply delete it and just go back to where you were and screenshot it again - It works best.
Hope this helps! -
Please help!

So I hadn't updated my software in many many months... I decided to so I could download games... And after my computer restated and had updated, it went to a grey screen with HTML coding. At the top it says "unable to find driver for this platform". No idea what to do please help!
That's one of the weird things.. it recognizes it maybe 10% of the time. And usually, only after I do the two-button reset. Problem is.. since it won't charge above 2%, anytime I try to do a restore or anything like that using iTunes, my device shuts off and I lose whatever progress I'd made.
So, an update... after reading through a bunch of similar complaints (there are literally 1000's of them so there's NO WAY this isn't somehow ios7 related, thanks a lot APPLE ) I decided to try a restore in recovery mode. After 3 hours and several disconnections... I ended up having to just set it up as a new iPad, as the restore did nothing. Weirdly though... as I was doing the restore in recovery mode.. I noticed I'd gotten up to a 10% charge.. higher than it's been since September, so after setting it up as a new device, I turned it off and plugged it in using the wall charger. 2 hours later and I was up to 38%. Still not great, as my iPad, before ios7 could've fully charged twice in the amount of time it took for me to now get 28% more of a charge. And that's with a fully cleaned out device.. so that really ***** and I'm now more confused than ever.
But I'm gonna leave it overnight charging and see what I come up with tomorrow. Sadly, when I paid $600 for it in February, I never expected to have to play "wait and see" with it... -
I am in Mavericks disk utility recovery mode as my mac book pro will not boot up & stays on the Apple grey screen . When I verify disk permissions I get
Open error 5:"input/ output error" on syst with over 50 of this messages & still counting . Disk Utility says 1 minute
But this has been going on for over 10 mins .
I can not verify disk or repair disk .
I have tried to reinstall mavericks operating system but it says my hard drive is locked which is very strange .
Does anyone know what is going on here ?
My system looks like it has been totally corrupted . Thanks AndrewCould be. The "lock" isn't actually looking for a password.
WARNING: This will completely erase the ENTIRE hard drive.
What you would need to do is boot to recovery > disk utility > select the MAIN drive on the left side > partition > change partition layout from CURRENT to 1 PARTITION > ensure on the right side it says Format : Mac OSX Extended (Journaled) then push APPLY.
Then if it will allow us, close the windows until you see the 4 options popup again and select "Reinstall Mac OS X" select the Mac HD and you should be good to go! -
X200 hangs during restart or shut down when connected to ultrabase
My X200 hangs during a Windows restart or shut down when I'm connected to my ultrabase. The laptop appears to go through most of the processes to restart/shut down but eventually hangs at a blue screen with unmoveable cursor (note, not a Windows BSOD). I'm forced to perform a hard shut down to turn off the laptop.
This hang at restart/shut down only occurs when I'm connected to the ultrabase.Just as a thing to try, and this is assuming that you all have an integrated camera, please try this camera driver and let the board know the results:

Urgent: Shut down when lid closes problem
My Mabook pro / mid 2010 / Yosemite 10.10 shuts down when lid closes. This is new in the last few days, not after any system updates. It wont restart after lid opens again, unless repeatedly holding down power button for long periods. Strangely, the sleep light is on before I open the lid, but once lid is open, it's completely off.
Does anyone know the cause and/or fix for this? I'm really worried it's the beginning of the end, and I rely on this machine for work and need to travel in a few days! Thanks in advance for any trouble shooting tips.Just to clarify; when I say "this is new" I mean the problem, not the laptop.

Please help me, i've been cutting film for months with imo09 like steven spielberg, now all of a sudden like thousands of others, imovie shuts down when i add titles or share it to the media browser.
I will try these suggestion from the apple community help for the titles:

Welcome to discussions, viewfinder:)
Be certain to follow Bengt's good advice:
Quit iMovie.
Locate a file named com.apple.iMovie.plist and get
rid of it. iMovie will create a new one the next
time it runs. Empty the trash and run a permissions
repair from the Disk Utility folder.
The files are located here:
-->/Users/YourName**/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iM
vie.plist
Also, please answer regarding the amount of free
space you have left on the Mac.

Hi InternetHogger,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I know that situations where you cannot boot your iPad and cannot charge your iPad can be very frustrating. In this situation, I would recommend using the attached article as a reference for troubleshooting.
