My g5 tells me to restart - then won't.

my g5 tells me to restart - then won't.
Also it will not start in safe mode - i just get the same "your computer needs restarting" message

That usually indicates a hardware issue.  If you have the original installer discs, boot with the Option key and insert the hardware test CD that came with the computer.     If the hardware test is unrevealing, and this is not a liquid cooling Mac, the first place I'd look is the RAM.

  • IMac (3.4gHz Intel Core i7) shuts down when sleeps, then won't restart

Just bought a brand new 27" iMac (3.4gHz Intel Core i7) which shuts down when sleeps, then won't restart (ie completely dead).
In order to restart, I have to unplug the power cord from the computer, hold power key down for 10secs, replug in and it then starts up. I returned to the store and they spent a couple days letting it go to sleep etc and overnight and for them it was fine. Woke up no problems. They returned it to me yesterday.
So I set it all up again, left it overnight and this morning it was dead again. So now it leaves me to wonder if it's something I have plugged into it.
I have a new Seagate 3TB external hard drive hooked up using USB3.0. This is plugged directly into the back of the computer.
I also have a powered USB hub plugged into the computer which has regular USB stuff such as printer, graphics tablet and another external hard drive (this one is older LaCie 500gb, and have put it into a new USB 3.0 case as well for the arrival of the new iMac (this had an old firewire hard drive case). However this hard drive is switched off at the case and is not being used.
I believe it could possibly be the Seagate 3TB disk causing this problem, but it works fine during the day while I am using the computer, it's just when I either leave it at lunch time to go to a meeting or walk etc or overnight that I come back and it has shut down....leaving me to believe that it's due to the computer going to sleep.
Has anyone else had a similar problem with a Seagate drive? Today I'm conducting an experiment and heading off for lunch with both hard drives unhooked. If I come back and the computer wakes up from a click of the mouse or keyboard as it should, I will plug in one hard drive at a time and re-test. I will leave the Seagate for last, as I don't think it is the old LaCie disk (which is off).
For reference sake, I also have a NAS running off my network through Airport Extreme etc and have my old iMac hooked up to the network too, but don't believe this is the problem.
Initially I did put in some after market RAM (another 8GB) and though that might be the problem, but I removed and it still reacted the same way (plus store I bought it from again booted up fine and woke up fine at their shop after I had taken RAM out too).
Will keep this post updated with my next test (letting computer sleep without either hard drive in), but keen to hear if anyone has had any similar experiences with Seagate disks/cases and the new iMacs.
    Cheers,
    Kristin

    Hey kristinandmike,
I had a similar problem shortly after I bought my 27" iMac. Here is an excerpt from my discussion:
"As BDAqua suggested, I started the process of elimination by shutting down the externals and just leaving up one of the USB drives and using the computer until time to shut it off. After eliminating 2 of the 3 drives I figured it had to be the last one. That drive is a Seagate GoFlex Desk version that allows different bases with differing connectivity. I had previously used FW800 to connect but had switched to USB3 on the new computer. I went ahead and got a Thunderbolt to FW adaptor cable and switched this drive back to Firewire rather than USB3. So far so good."
For some reason the Seagate I was using didn't agree with the USB3 on the Mac.

I tried connecting the phone to itunes on the computer to see if it registered and charged it but that didn't work either.

  • Flash Player Freezes While Buffering Then Won't Proceed Even After Computer Restart

I am having frequent problems with Flash Player freezing while watching Korean dramas hosted online (http://www.mysoju.com/empress-chun-chu/). Flash Player freezes while viewing file and then won't proceed past that point even if I close all browser windows and even if I restart my computer. Sometimes I can get around this by saving the file to my hard drive using Real Player "download this video" button. However, the download often freezes at what appears to be the same point as the freeze in the streaming Flash Player. Even if I delete this partial file from my hard drive, repeated efforts to download the file again result in instantaneous file completed messages with a new incomplete (partial) file of exactly the same size as before. I can't find where Flash Player or  MS Windows Vista is storing the partial download files. Any help would be greatly aprreciated.
It appears these Flash Player freezes may be causing or resulting from DSL modem or wireless router connection problems that result in the internet light on the DSL modem not being lit. These problems seem limited to web browser pages with flash player.

If you just got your new MBP you have phone support from Apple (which is quite good) call them.  800-692-7753 tell the automated answerer "mail technical support" you'll have human quite quickly.  Hope this helps.

  • Why does the Snow Leopard disk keep tell us to restart in order to start the install?

We are trying install Snow Leopard on a MacBook that currently has Tiger. We were told by the Apple folks when we ordered it that we could install straight to Snow Leopard.
So when we put the disk in it tells us to restart to begin the install. When we restart it spits the disk out and then we put it back in and it again tells us to restart in order to install.
    What are we doing wrong??
    Thanks!!!

    Try starting this way:
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
If you still have a problem possibly the DVD is defective.

  • Need help w/ applescript to restart, launch an app, restart, then repeat

    Hey Everyone,
Ok. I want to write an AppleScript that will do the following:
    1) restart computer
    2) launch 1st app for x sec.
    3) restart
    4) launch 2nd app for x sec.
    5) restart
    6) launch 3rd app for x sec.
    6) restart
However, the only code I've been able to find that restarts the computer is the following:
    tell application "Finder"
    restart
    end tell
While this does restart the computer, I can't find a way to integrate it with my "sub" AppleScript that launches the app. So far, my script only does the following:
    1) Launch 1st app for x sec
    2) Restart
I'm having problems launching things automatically after a restart. Does anyone have any suggestions?
    thanks,
    --Jonathan

The fact that you restart the machine automatically terminates your script, which is why you don't continue after the restart.
What you will need to do is use some persistent data to keep track of the iterations. You will then need to add your script to the login items (so it's launched the system restarts) and it can use its persistent data to know how many restarts it has done. For example (untested):
property numRestarts: 0 -- this will be the restart counter
    on run
if numRestarts = 0 then -- first run
        set numRestarts to 1
tell application "System Events" to restart
else if numRestarts = 1 then
        tell application "App1" to activate
delay 120 -- wait 120 seconds (two minutes)
set numRestarts to 2 -- increment the counter
tell application "System Events" to restart
else if numRestarts = 2 then
        tell application "App2" to activate
        delay 120 -- wait again
        set numRestarts to 3
tell application "System Events" to restart
      end if
      -- add more cases here
    end run

I have a PowerBook G4 with a non-functioning monitor.  It used to work with an external monitor, but I reinstalled the OS, which cleared the display preferences and now when I restart it won't detect the external monitor. This means I can't use the computer anymore. How do I fix? I tried using the Command+F2 keyboard shortcut, but it doesnt' work.  It's possible that since I reinstalled the OS, it still needs to be set up, so there's only a welcome screen (but since I can't see it I'm not sure).

It does not matter if I am working with HD or 4K - same thing happens.
This began happening about a week ago. Nothing really new has changed. I tried to repair permissions and check this from a new admin account because I know that is what Adobe thinks the answer to every problem is. But it did not change anything.

  • Seems to capture but then won't quit after ESC pressed?

We have new XRAID with Apple FC interface & running on Mac G5 and 10.3.9. We use FinalCutPro 4.5 and it all seems to capture but then won't quit after ESC pressed. The pinwheel spins and the Mac is unaccessible then after maybe 3 hours it finishes and everythings ok. Way too much time for a 15 minute capture! Aja Kona2 capture card and they have had me adjust the settings in the xraid admin but no change. Capture of a few seconds are usually finalized instantly. Any Clues?

Same problem if you don't choose capture now ?? I've always though capture now to the raid was a BIG NO NO.

About the only thing you can try is using the Online Internet Recovery system to reinstall Lion on your Mac over the top of the current install. that will reset all system files and should not touch your personal files or the apps you have installed.
Or iof you have a recent Time Machine backup use that to restore your Mac to that point in time.

Anyone know of a fix after updating the last ios...ipad keeps restarting or won't stay on.  Very aggravating.

Have you tried resetting your iPad? I don't have a lot of confidence that it will work for you, but it's an easy thing to try and a good place to start.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
If that doesn't help, you should probably restore the iOS software. You may even need to use recover mode. Both are covered in this in article.
