My girlfriend reformated her iPod as a Hard Drive, need help.

My girlfriend reformated her iPod as a Hard Drive by accedent when trying to format a Mac iPod for Windows. How does one make this iPod be reconized as an iPod again rather then as an external HD? The iPod in question is a iPod nano, 16 GB running iPod software 1.0.4

When the iPod is formatted by Apple's installer software and disk mode is enabled it will mount as a single FAT32 partition...you can store stuff on it given the remaining size left over from your music/photo files.
Sub-partitioning and playing file/formatting games on your own is unsupported and will have unknown behavior....you can try it and rerun the formatter if it gets scrwed up, but the iPod is music device first, not a generic drive that you're supposed to monkey with.

  • Replaced hard drive: need helping getting songs off ipod to itunes

I recently had to send my computer into apple for repair, needless to say they had to replace my hard drive so i lost all of my music. However it is still on my ipod, so i was wondering if there is a way to transfer it from my ipod to my computer

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod.
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Question about hard drive, need help lol.

Hey I'm kinda new to the MacBook world and have a stupid question. I am getting a late 2009 MacBook unibody (white polycarbonate, model MacBook 6.1... I believe) I am switching the original 250gb 5400 rpm hard drive out for a Seagate Momentus XT 750gb 7400 rpm hybrid hard drive. I want to keep everything on the original hard drive and just pop the new hard drive and start fresh with Snow Leopard. I'm going to purchase the SL cd from apple but I do not have the original  grey start up cd that came with it (my girlfriends little sister lost it). Do I need to call apple for that cd in order to start fresh on my new hard drive or is everything I need on the SL cd?
Also how do I go about wiping the whole computer when I put the hard drive in and use SL? I want to essentially have a completely clean laptop with a new hard drive.
Thanks for your help in advance.

The SL disc you get from Apple will do everything you need. When you nstall the new hard drive there will be nothing to wipe, the drive is the only piece of that Mac hat stores anything so you don't need to worry about that. Post back and let me know how that hybrid drive works out....I'm interested.

  • Partitioning a 1TB hard drive - need help!

i would like to partition a 1 terabyte external usb hard drive into the following partitions
1 partition to hold a bootable snow leopard installation (so i can reinstall via usb, install bootcamp, add stuff, etc)
1 partition to hold a tiger installation (for my ageing g5 imac)
1 (largest + what remains of the 1TB) partition formatted in ntfs to put the rest of my multimedia/documents to be read by a pc (running XP or windows 7), ps3 + xbox 360.
would appreciate some help here as i have no clue where to begin.
i am running snow leopard on a macbook. thanks!

The program you're going to need is called Disk Utility - it's under Utilities in the Applications folder in Finder.
There's a Partition tab in the utility, which is where you'll start. You'll see your external disc, which you can carve up into various pieces. It's all pretty self-explanatory from there on.

  • BIOS doesnt recognize SATA connected Hard Drive- need help flashing bios from bootable USB

    hi
I have an envy laptop running InsydeH20 bios rev f14.
the bios doesn't recognize the internally connected hdd/ssd.
I have heard that with insyde bios', sometimes you have to unlock 'secret capabilities' to recognize hardware incl internal hdd.
but I am just trying to reflash my bios.
the problem is that I cant get into windows because it doesn't recognize my hard drive and windows doesn't allow insallation to usb connected drives.
I downloaded the patch from hp.com for my product and it actually has an option for making a bootable USB for use on the actual system, and I did this. the instructions are to just restart my computer with the bootable usb. I have tried Legacy support on and off, neither updates bios.
I highly doubt it has anything to do with the physical sata connector.
basically I need to flash my bios from bootable usb. I have done some research about making a bootable dos usb etc etc but I don't know what program to even run and how..
this is a link to my product:

    Thanks!!

    hi
I need to flash the bios of my system. the bios is not recognizing hardware and cannot boot into windows to run the bios flash for windows.
on my other comp I ran the bios update patch and chose ' install to bootable usb ' so that I could use it on my system.
cannot run on my laptop. tried booting from the media. tried allowing 'legacy' compatibility.
im running insydeH2O rev f14 right now.

    Hi,
    Try the following.
Remove the Windows 7 installation disc and shutdown the notebook.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Insert the Windows 7 installation disc.  Select the Boot Options menu ( usually f9 ).  Use the arrow keys to highlight the CD/DVD drive and hit enter - if prompted to 'Press any key to continue......', do so.

  • Upgrading hard drive, need help!

I found a good deal on a hard drive at best buy, but I'm not sure it's right... I can't a model number on any of the mac specialty sites. Could someone check out my link and tell me if it will work and if it won't what I need to be looking for in the specs? Thanks. (the more opinions the merrier!)

I have just upgraded my iBook with the same hard drive.
The only issue, this happened when upgrading the hard drive on my iMac as well.
I have the MacOS 10.3 restore dvds for both computers. When you boot up from the DVD. Format the hard drive on Disk Utility. The Drive formats but isn't able to have the OS saved to it via installer. Leave your DVD loaded quit installer turn computer off. Turn on computer you can now save the OS to your hard drive.
Might be different with MacOs 10.4 restore DVDs

  • Upgrading Hard Drive need help with making it work.

I have just begun copying my HD to a 120GB 2.5" SATA drive.
I'm using Super Duper to copy it, and I understand it will be a bootable disk.
Once it has completed copying, is there anything I need to do to make it the startup disk ?
Do I make it the startup disk before I swap the hard drive out from within System Preferences ?
Also, it is currently called Disk 2 - Will that become the name of my HD (currently obviously called Macintosh HD)
If it is, can I then change the name ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks

SuperDuper will make it a bootable disk if that's the backup option you selected. Look at the SD feedback information. It tells you what it will do and will then show the steps checking off each one as they are completed.
All you will need to do is remove the old drive and install the new one. It should be ready to go if you did everything correctly. This includes partitioning the new drive using the GUID partition scheme, setting the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and then Erasing the drive using the Zero Data option.
Be sure to test the cloned drive before installing by booting the computer with it while it's in the external case.
You can rename the drive anything you want.

  • CS3 on old hard drive need help to activate

My HP motherboard failed (manu defect) the hard drive is fine and has my adobe CS3 suite on it. I bought a new laptop and tethered the old hard drive to my new computer. I try to start the cs3 but a pop up says my computer lacks an adobe llinguistic code?? I moved and lost the serial on the case. How do I use my cs3 from the old hard drive?

You probably do not use it from the old hard drive vecause the program needs to be installed on whatever machine is trying to use it... even if you intentional;ly tried to install on a separate drive the program still needs to install some ellements on the main system drive.
If you check you Adobe account online you might find the serial number there if you registered the program.  You can download CS3 applications thru the following link: Download CS3 products

  • 2007 MBP Screen replaced now hard drive needs replaced

Ok me and my wife brought our MBP to a computer guy( a non apple authroized repair guy ) to get the screen replaced. When we picked it up the computer started acting funny and 1 1/2 weeks later the computer would not even start up. My wife just left the apple store and they called her back saying the hard drive needs to be replpaced. I have a strong feeling that these computer techs that fixed the screen did something to our MBP. Is there anyway I can prove this? I called them and they said before they do any repairt they check the hard drive and make sure it passes thier test. Once it dopes thay went ahead and repaired the screen. They said they don't even go inside the computer to fix the screen.
    THanks.

You also have to sometimes accept that everytime you open up and unplug things, you run the risk of disturbing something.
No matter how experienced you are, I have seen many times where just the act of swapping a CPU or changing RAM has triggered a failure elsewhere in the system.
I think the culprit of these occurances is voltage remaining in the capacitors. It is widely acknowledged that holding the power button down for 30 seconds after unplugging devices can restore function, so it is equally likely that failiing to do so, and failing to release the charge held in the capacitors before doing work can lead to internal discharges when plugging and unplugging devices and therefore lead to unwittingly damaging equipment.
    Just a theory though.....

  • Import from IPOD to Computer Hard Drive

Hello, I travelled to the other side of the world with an IPOD 30GB. Now I want to transfer the music from the IPOD to a hard drive and I cannot find a way to do so.
HELP. Some of the music is to advanced for a child and the rest is in the father's era. I want to save it so the father can have access to it on the HD, add the child's playlist and allow her to enjoy her gift. I know how to make the smart playlist and then only chooose those to be synchronized. However, I do not know how to synchronize in the reverse.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player. Also free is SharePod.

  • Using ipod as a hard drive to transfer data from PC to Mac

hey, Is is possible to use the ipod as a hard drive to transfer data from/to Mac and windows PCs?
I see no problem transfering data from/to my mac to the ipod. But I cannot see the ipod on the PC. When I plug the USB cable to my windows PC, it shows a popup message "external disk is not formated. Do you want to format it?".
    thanks,
    Martin

Windows cannot read a Mac formatted iPod.
Macs can read Windows fomratted iPods.
You need to run iTunes for Windows, then Restore the iPod.
It will now work on both Mac and PC.

  • Can I use my iPod as a hard drive?

In addition to listening to music and looking at photos, I would like to use my iPod as a hard drive. I was able to set the switch to do this on my Mac Powerbook in iTunes. But I want to transfer some files to my desktop PC. I don't want to put the same music on my PC and Mac! I never use the PC to listen to music. But I would like to use the harddrive feature. I'm afraid that if I try to connect to the PC using iTunes it will erase my music and make me start all over again. Is there any way to set a switch on the PC so it can see the files on the the iPod?

In case your iPod has been used initially on your Mac:
If you want to use your Mac formatted iPod as ext HD on a Mac as well as on a Windows PC you will loose all your iPod content once, as your iPod has to be re-formatted on a Windows PC using the latest Windows-Ipod-Updater.
Having done so - although not supported by Apple - your Windows formatted iPod will work on a Mac as well as on a Windows PC.

  • Troubles with making iPod an external hard drive. Very frustrated. Please help..

I need to make my iPod an external hard drive, and the “enable disk use” option does not appear for me. I've gone through all the settings, reverted back to 10.7 and gone through all of those settings too. I've watched a million ****ing tutorials and I still can't find it.  The reason I ask is because I want to switch to Winamp media player, which also has the ability to manage music on mobile devices (including iPod), but Winamp wont recognize my iPod unless it's an external hard drive. I'm going to go insane, if I can't get my music back for school work. Thanks for anyone that helps.

    Here's another one:
You need iOS 7.0 and Mac OS X 10.8.  I have an Ipod Touch 4. I tried to update iOS from 6.1.6 to 7.0. I got no error message, but I checked "software update" in the ipod settings. The iOS version is still 6.1.6 and it says that "my software is up to date".  So go figure!
You need to install it on both your Mac and your iOS device.  The screenshot above is from: http://www.beyondf.com/airbridge/.  The page contains links to both the Mac and the iOS versions.
