Then, it takes a LONGGGG time to even get me to the right screen to do the test ( I have to restart the computer to be able to renavigate to the screen) and it says Hard Disk test failed. if you have your serial number then all you need to do is download the Lightroom installer and install the program. Use your existing serial number. If you don't have your serial number, but registered Lightroom with Adobe then you can login to your Adobe account and get the serial number.

A blank drive needs to be formatted first, you do that hold c boot (or hold option key boot) from the 10.6 install disk (or Lion USB)

You can't connect directly to the external drive, but should be able to use iTunes Home Sharing via the laptop.

Try deauthorizing the computer even if you haven't authorized it. If you've already authorized it, deauthorize it twice and then authorize it again.

okay from reading posts it seems if I transfer my backed up info from my old comp to the new one and erase my dad's phone's back up i could reset my phone and it would transfer all my old data back onto the phone, be linked to the new computer and i could proceed. Now remove all your info and update the old AppleiD/iTunes account and use only that account.
You cannot transfer items between iTunes accounts.
You can redownload all the content.

You didn't buy an 'unlocked' iPhone 3GS - you bought a 'hacked' one.
Updating to iOS 5 removed the hack and the unofficial unlock.
All you can do is try to find out which network the phone is locked to and ask them if they can unlock it properly.
Otherwise, sell it or throw it away and buy an officially unlocked phone from an official source.

Hi Susan, you must have a Mac Pro, Powermacs cannot run 10.6.x
Anyway, once you Install the new drive, you likely must Format it...

To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions
Delete the "songs" that do not play in your iTunes library and reimport them.

How do I simply move my existing OSX and data from a faulty hard drive I am replacing with a new one?

Recently I took my computer in to get repaid for a monitor display issue. While it was repaired the shop told me my hard drive was having issues. It turns out they could fix it for me but they were going to charge me $300+. I replace drives all the time at work but never for Macs. How can I go about moving all of my data from the current hard disk to the new hard disk (OS and all)? Can I simply back up the data to an external drive using time machine? I am thinking I would need to just start from scratch and install Mac OS 10.5, upgrade to 10.6, and so on.

tjk has given you the more correct answer. Use TimeMachine, CarbonCopyCloner, or SuperDuper! to make a complete backup of your computer's hard drive. This will make restoring to a new hard drive as painless as possible. Backing up only your home directly would force you to reinstall every program - sometime I prefer to avoid when possible. (All those serial numbers!)
If while attempting to backup the drive you get error messages which indicate the backup will be unusable, then retreat to backup up only the home directory.

I've had problems updating from 10.4.5 to 10.4.6 - ever since the update neither iCal nor the Address book work. The data for the address book is still there as Mail can see it, but neither iCal nor Address book will open - they just bounce in the dock and crash.
Reading further down this forum I worked out that the best thing was probably to archive and restore back to 10.4.1 and re-update using the combo installer.
Unfortunately the 10.4.1 Installer DVD won't let me carry on as it crashes when it verifies the target disk.
The same thing happens when I use the disk utility and try to verify the disk - it won't even start scanning it - just crashes almost instantly. (Permissions verify OK and no problems).
I'd rather not do a format & install if I can help it as I would have to spend ages reloading all the software from CDs and DVDs...

Hi Tom, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Given the situation you're in I don't know that you have a good option but to erase and install. You can try repairing with DiskWarrior but it may or may not work.
My advice would be to get a firewire external hard drive and clone your system over to it. That way, instead of re-installing you can just use Migration Manager. You'll also have a complete backup solution which it sounds like you need.
