You don't.
The iPhone is not a backup device. You can use File>Transfer purchases in iTunes to extract media and apps purchased from the iTunes store. If you have music on your phone that came from other sources, you will need to retrieve the originals or purchase 3rd party software to extract it from the phone.
Please see "More Like This" to the right. This is addressed frequently.

My hard drive crashed on my PC so I had to replace it. Is there a way to retrieve all the music I had downloaded & purchased. Unfortunately I did not back it up but it is on my iPod.
Use a third-party utility such as Phone to PC - macroplant.com.

My hard drive crashed on my Imac 24" 2009, I installed a new hard drive 2TB and a SSD drive 240 GB and removed the optical drive.
What external DVD can I get to work with the IMac? The Apple super drive is not compatible.Virtually any DVD burner that can connect to your Mac will work. They start at $40 on Amazon.

I had a new hard drive fitted to my imac and restored it from my time machine back up on an external hard drive when I try to open itunes I get this message "the itunes library extras.itdb file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file"
To solve this issue all I did was check to ensure that the file permissions were set as described by the earlier posts, followed by simply deleting the iTunes Library Genius.itdb file. Once the file was deleted I was able to open iTunes without difficulty. Note that I am running Windows 8. Hope this helps!

Can time capsule back up an external hard drive attached to my imac and the iMac internal Harddrive
Can time capsule back up an external hard drive attached to my imac and the iMac internal Harddrive
In addition to Kappy's comments, the external drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in order for Time Machine to be able to back it up.

Hi!
I have a WD my book external hard drive plugged into my imac and I want to share it over my network with my apple tv. I went into system preferences > sharing, checked "file sharing" and added my external hard drive to the shared folder. So now it is listed in "shared folders" but under "users" everything is grayed out (it says "read and write" for "everyone" - but "read and write" is grayed out, and it doesn't let me add or subtract users). Now I can access all of the folders I shared from my imac except for the externalhard drive. What's going on?Hi RRFS!,thanks for help.I forgot to tell that hard drive has 2 partitions 1:format :Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and that works properly,2:format:MS-DOS (FAT32) and when i "get info" for both :first has shering & permitions:You can read and write - with name and privilege, second has shaing & prermissions:You can read and write- without name and privilege

Can I install Aperture on an external Ilmega hard drive attached to my IMac and run Aperture from there to use it with photos on my IMac iPhoto library?
It's usually best to have applications on the boot drive, so I'd turn your idea around: run Aperture from the internal disk and park iPhoto and maybe iTunes libraries on an external - which would free up space on the internal.

My Hard drive crashed on my PC just after I bought my new iphone 4s, which I hadnt sinked yet with my itunes account. I had many photos of my kids backed up on icloud which is all I care about retrieving! Is there ANY way to retrieve those pictures? I have read through countless blogs and forums relating to my problem and it doesnt seem as though anybody has had the same problem. I performed a back up of my icloud just before selling my last Iphone. I bought a new Iphone, and before I got the chance to sinc it to my itunes/icloud account, my hard drive crashed (yes I am sure it was my hard drive). So now I have a new computer and have absolutely no idea how to retrieve any of it or if retrieval is even possible. Any help you can provide to me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I am running my first backup on Time Machine using a Seagate external hard drive with a thunderbolt adapter and cable. I have a MacBook Pro 2011. It is backing up 11GB, and is telling me it will take approx two days. Is this normal?

The hard drive crashed on my apple computer and I lost a lot of photos. I want to recover them from my apple tv1, but the computer won't seem to pair up with the apple tv. The Apple tv does appear in devices, but it won't let me go any further. The 'apply' button is a pale grey colour and you can't click on it. Help!!
there is no facility to recover your photos from the appletv.
the only way to link the appletv to your new "system" is to remove the existing itunes link and then link it to the new itunes - this will delete all content from the appletv though. -

Repeat hard drive crash...maybe a dud replacement?
A few weeks ago, my 3 1/2 year old hard drive crashed. It was very full, i started a download, and I think it was just too much. And I did not back-up. Shame on me. I did however order a replacement hard drive. My brother (ex-mac-genius) put it in for me, noting that there was someone elses documents on the hard drive (it was a refurb, but not cleaned off). It worked fine for about 2 days and then the same thing as before happened: it locks up, I have to power down, and when I restart it is stuck at the apple screen with the little dial of bars spinning. Is there any chance it could be something other than the hard drive? Could something in the computer be killing hard drives or did I just get a dud.
At my experience, even a broken logic board cannot destroy a harddrive. Well, there may cases theoretically, but it is highly impossible (especially since you stated that the drive worked before).
... on the hard drive (it was a refurb, but ...
I more guess this is the reason. From which source have you bought a refurbished, not cleaned (you surely mean "unformatted, with accessible data") harddrive ?
It is always a good idea to buy a new harddrive, because you never know how the previous owner of a refurbished drive used it. Harddrives are very delicate, especially such of mobile computers.
Anyway, as recommended, try to perform some hardware tests first to exclude the possibility of a broken controller (but again, very unlike in my mind). -
I have a dead iMac (mother board), intel duo.I wish to remove the hard drive and made into an external hard drive (hopefully being able to read the contents). Any recommendations as to whom I should go to to do the work?

I'm looking into buying an "older" or "last generation" MacBook 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I seem to remember reading that even though it's 802.11g ready, there is a firmware update to bring it up to 802.11N...True or False? If True were would I find t
