"Yes...yes.... ok!"
It's confirmed, H.e.l.l. has finally frozen over!  TM drives are now bootable!
Still it's not a real bootable clone, can't run the computer off the external drive for long in only Recovery mode, still requires the boot drive to be replaced if it not functional, and with TM backing up every hour, isn't going to offer much software protection as the TM drive is just as likely to be as messed up as the internal boot drive.
For a iMac it still requires the computer to be taken in to Apple for a drive replacement, as ONLY Apple can do it due to proprietary connections and firmware on the iMac hard drives.
But it is bootable!
The backup time factor can be controlled using TimeMachine Editor, from every hour to just when the user thinks it's necessary.
Apple lurches slightly forward!  Hurray!
Question is, can one restore from earlier stable TM's or just the last one? In this bootable fashion?

    Hi ...
I've found a solution to my problem.
Time Machine locates extenal HDD backups differently depending if they were done via a network or via a USB/FireWire/Thunderbolt connection.
My initial backup was done via a direct Thunderbolt connection. I ran into the above issue b/c the second time when I tried looking for the backup file the HDD was conencted to my iMac and I was accessing it via a network conenction.
I simply connected the drive directly to my MacBook pro and ... voila. I was able to see the backup, select the iPhoto library and begin the restore.
    Hope this helps.

how can I see another mac backup on time machine?

Bob thanks, but that didn't solve my problem, I went to question 17 and went into the Browse my Time Machine and it also didn't find or recognize the other Mac.  I know it's in there because when I open the other Mac and Enter the Time Machine, I can see it through that Mac, and I have the same problem there, where I can't see my Mac.
In short, when I back up a Mac (doesn't matter which one) I can verify its backup as long as I use that Mac, but I cannont verfiy the backup on that Mac using another Mac and vice versa.
Also, I never used to have to do anything to see both on the same Mac.  So I don't know what changed.
    There must be another way.
    Thanks

  • I deleted a pop email account from mail.  How can I recover those sent messages without Time Machine?

I deleted a pop email account from mail.  How can I recover those sent messages without Time Machine?

    Thomas,
"Note that you were warned that this would happen and approved it.  When you delete an e-mail account in Mail, you are shown a message like the following:"
You didn't read my problem - I said I deleted a POP email account.  I always read the messages that pop up and in Mail when you delete a POP account - IT DOESN'T TELL YOU NUTHIN!  It just deletes it - which *** for me.  Fortunately, I had an iPhone and on that device I had about a 1000 messages that I could recover but on all my POP accounts I download them from the server onto my Mac so they were only on Mail (the really old ones that I wanted to keep.)  I had to move them into another directory one by one basically because when I would move 50 some of them would move and some wouldn't and I never did figure out that problem.  Basically the ones that would not move are the ones that were associated with my domain changes with GoDaddy, and there were a lot of those.  Have no idea as to why only those were resistant to moving but I can get all that data from GoDaddy anyway.
This thread is now moot seeing as how I've recovered everything I can and am going to just move on - and back up more often.  ;-)
Apple and Mail need to rewrite that program to include a WARNING MESSAGE when deleting an Account in Mail that says ALL YOUR MESSAGES ARE GOING TO DISAPPEAR NEVER TO RETURN IF YOU DELETE THIS ACCOUNT, SO YOU DANG WELL BETTER HAVE A BACK UP IF YOU WANT TO KEEP ANYTHING BEFORE PRESSING THAT MINUS SYMBOL!  ;-)

  • How can I restore a deleted calendar from time machine

I accidentally deleted one of my calendars.  How can I restore it from time machine?

I'm not sure why it didn't work.  I deleted the old Calendar folder and then replaced it with a Time Machine version of the same folder from the previous day.  Then I opened iCal and there was still nothing there.
The reason I just deleted Calendar folder and it's sub-folders and tried to start from scratch is because I could tell which sub-folder was for any one specific calendar since the sub-folder names were in some sort of code.

  • How can I resolve OSStatus Error 13 on Time Machine when connecting to Time Capsule on Lion?

This is a semi-rhetorical question: I have now resolved this for my own setup, However, there was very little information on this error in the fora, so I thought I would post my experience with getting a Time Capsule (2TB, 3rd edition) to work on OS X Lion after the AFP/NAS debacle.
    Background
My third party LaCie Big Disk Network* NAS died when Lion came out.
I could access neither Time Machine nor the drive through Finder.
The excellent thread on "Lion: Connecting to legacy (pre-Lion) AFP services - and Mac OS X (server)" (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3258472?start=0&tstart=0) allowed me to access the drive via Finder to save my files but, of course, Time Machine was still broken. That guide showed you how to lift security restrictions on AFP shares.
For reasons explained below [disclaimer: rant follows] I decided to ditch the LaCie and purchased a Time Capsule.
    The Problem
Time Capsule connected via DSL to the net and set up a wifi network with a green light.
The "Data" mount for Time Machine was visible in Time Machine, but trying to access it showed the following error:
The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error 13)
Trying to open the share in Finder using the appropriate credentials showed:
The operation cannot be completed because the original item for "Data" can't be found
    Things that didn't work
Turning lots of things on and off
Resetting the DSL modem, the router (Time Capsule), the computer
    Repairing permissions
    What DID work
Undoing the modifications made during the process of mounting the old LaCie NAS
To do this, open Terminal and enter:
    sudo -s
    chmod o+w /Library/Preferences
    cd  /Library/Preferences/
    rm com.apple.AppleShareClient.plist*
    (from https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3258472?start=0&tstart=0)
    Then restart your computer.
This worked for me. I don't UNDERSTAND any of why this did or didn't affect the computer, so please don't ask me to explain how it worked or what else to try. I thought I would just put this out there for knowledge.
    * LaCie have really got my goat. Unlike other manufacturers who seem to be trying to provide support for their drives (Western Digital MyBook), LaCie have stated outright that they will not be providing any updates for their Big Disk Network. This is a hard drive they describe as a "Professional NAS", though I can't think of many professions where £200 backups need to be replaced every two years to keep abreast of security updates. In their defence, the drive is no longer manufactured… but, IMHO, I don't see that as sufficient reason to abandon all support or updates immediately. Boo! On the upside, loving my shiny new refurb Time Capsule.

Our true genius died a little while ago.
But up to Mountain Lion he has tones of info ..

Try some of the section C solutions.
It is more than likely network.
    BUT do the following.
    1. Install the widget A1
    2. Reset TM, A4
    3. Verify the backup, A5
    4. Reboot the whole network and restart it in order.. modem.. TC.. MB Air.
    No luck to this point.
Tell us exactly what OS you have.
The worst possible is Mavericks. If you are trying to connect to old backups after an upgrade it is hopeless.
    I recommend you start over.
Simply wipe the TC and start afresh.
Manually mount the TC disk in Mavericks so you are sure it is working. Tell us if you run into trouble.
Most important.. in wireless network preferences are you running ipv6 in link-local mode.

  • How can I restore an iPhoto library from Time Machine (ML) - when I TM doesn't see the backup??

    Hi,
I recently did a Time Machine backup of my MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion) onto an external HDD. Around the time of the last backup, my system was behaving funny so I decided to rebuild the OS X.
Because the last TM backup was of a system that as mentioned, was somewhat 'unstable', and I only had a few backups available (didn't have TM running too long beforehand) - I decided not to use TM to 'restore' my system. I just did  a clean install of ML and planned on pulling files over manually. I'd done this before and it worked a treat.
This time ran into a snag. The backup disk TM used was an external HDD which I wanted to upgrade (suffice to say it works fine). So, I needed to move the backup.backupdb directory to my other HDD. The copy seemed to work fine ... so far so good.
I installed the new ML OS on my MacBook Pro and that was fine too. I was able to pull most of my files over by going into the TM backup and copying what I needed.
BUT, for some reason, this didn't work for the iPhoto library?
Alas, I found that you need to do a 'restore' iPhoto library file from whithin TM. So I fired up TM and noticed that it didn't recognise the old backup file located on the HDD. I.e. when I turned on TM, pointed it to the external HDD (where I copied the previous backup to), it started a fresh backup.
So ... my question is - "How do I restore the iPhoto library if I can't get to it from TM?"
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help! The last 15 years of photos are stored in this library!

  • How can I build a table with the time values of a timer from a while loop

    Hi:
I have a question concerning building a table:
Every 100ms I read a value from a sensor (while loop with a timer). I would like to build a table with the actual time and the concerning value. For example:
    0msec         1V
    100msec     2V
    200msec     3V
    300msec     4V
    etc.
If I use the Express VI for building a table, I always get the date and time, but I don't need the date and the time is in the following format: HH:MMS, which is nonsensical for me as I can't differentiate within msec. Can I change the format anywhere?
Can I also save the table to a file or even to an Excelsheet? How can I do that?
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi Craig:
thank you very much. To solve the mystery : ) :
I want to drive a stepper motor with a specific frequency. To get the current degree value of the motor I would like to measure the current time (from the beginning of the move on). (With a formula I get the degree value out of the time)
Concurrently I would like to get data from a torque sensor and from a pressure sensor. That's why I asked you about the time and the table. The measurement should start with the movement of the motor. How can I do that? Right now I have different block diagrams (different while loops) (see attachment) and I would like to put them in one.
I haven't done the block diagram for the pressure sensor yet, so there is only the one for the torque sensor and the one for the motor.
I also would like to set a mark in the table when the voltage value of an analog input gets under a specific threshold value. Is that possible?
I'm sorry, I'm a novice in LabVIEW. But maybe you can help me.
    Thank you very much!
    Steffi

  • How can I restore just one application from Time Machine?

Hello, I have just one application that is really acting quirky and won't load correctly anymore and I would like to restore that application from Time Machine but am just not sure how to do that. Can someone please walk me through step by step on how to restore just one application. Thank you. Jean
    Message was edited by: anokienurse

Before you restore an application from a Time Machine backup it would be wiser to remove the current installed copy then reinstall from the application's original distribution medium - download, CD/DVD, etc. The reason for this is that Time Machine backs up every hour. By now the bad version of this application is now backed up to your Time Machine backup drive. Restoring from the backup won't resolve your problem.
First, uninstall the old program. If the program came with an uninstaller then use it. If not then start by deleting the application from the Applications folder. Then locate all the support files associated with the application and remove them, too. Look for these in:
    /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences
    /Users/yourusername/Library/Applications Support
Applications may come with a separate uninstaller program that could also be in your Applications folder. Some applications may install other files in other locations on your computer. If you tell us what the application is we may be able to provide additional help.
You may find more information here: The XLab FAQs. Read the FAQ on uninstalling software.

  • How Can I Check the Health of the Time Machine Snapshots?

Hi. The last time I used Time Machine to restore to a fresh install of Mountain Lion, it had an error, I had to manually copy the folders and files in my home folder as well as XCode and bookmarks for Safari.
Is there an app that can check if the Time Machine snapshot will work when you need to restore it to a fresh install of Mountain Lion? Could it also check the backup disk for surface errors? My backup drive that uses Time Machine is fine.
    Thank you in advance.
    God bless.

Unfortunately, you cannot do diagnostics on a Time Capsule. Data on a Time Capsule are not stored directly to the drive. Data are stored in a sparsebundle disk image. If the disk image goes bad, then you can try to copy it to a regular hard drive so you can try repairing the disk image or you erase the Time Capsule.
You really don't need to check hard drives from time to time. If there are errors on the drive you will know about them before you have time to fix the drive. And, if the errors are fixable usually that doesn't happen using Disk Utility.
File errors are very rare no matter how often you use a HDD. There is no research to support your hypothesis.
To protect against hard drive failure (unrelated to file errors) is best avoided by making multiple backups. You cannot have too many backups. Given your concern for your files this will help you a lot more than running diagnostice tests on one hard drive. I would also recommend you not use Time Machine because its reliability is markedly less than most recommended backup utilities such as these. Furthermore, you can clone any drive using Disk Utility's Restore feature.
    Suggested Backup Software
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the drive used for backup. Source means the drive you are backing up.

  • How do i change my computer hdd from time machine backup to normal so i can install mavericks

How do i change my computer hard drive back to normal cant install mavericks on it HELP !!!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You have got the "Backups.backupdb" folder in the root level of the hard drive. This is the folder used by Time Machine to save backups to, and the Mavericks installer has detected that your hard drive is the Time Machine disk when it's not.
To fix this, open a Finder window, select the Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type:
Then, delete the "Backups.backupdb" folder and empty the Trash. Finally, open the OS X Mavericks installer again and follow the steps
