My hard drive failed, has been replaced, and now it won't boot to CD.

My hard drive failed, has been replaced, and now it won't boot to CD to install the OS package. It would boot for a while, get through the first cd of install and would stop randomly in the next install. I found out that the installation disk was cracked so I went out and purchased the Mac Box Set which includes Mac OS X Snow Leopard, iLife '09 and iWork '09 under advisement from an associate at the local apple store. Now, I try installing this new OS disk and all I get is the apple logo without a spinning wheel for about 10 minutes and the computer restarts and does it again. I have tried booting from disk, holding c while starting up, and in safemode, holding shift while booting. Please help save my poor poor macbook!!!

These errors look like corrupt or missing files that leopard requires. It sound like you need to start from scratch: format your drive, reload Leopard. I realize that this is probably what you are trying to do.
If you cannot boot from install DVD and cannot successfully get into Safemode or Single usermode (due to a corrupt or incomplete install) then you will need another computer to assist you.
If you can get it into Target Disk Mode and have another Mac you could plug it into that Mac and reformat it.
If it will not go into TDM then you may need to take it out and put it into an external enclosure to plug into another Mac to format it.

  • How can I sync my iPad to hard drive that has been replaced. It was on the hard drive that crashed

I had to replace my hard drive and having trouble syncing iTunes without losing content.

Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • I'm trying to install a new hard drive on my Touchsmart but the recovery disks won't boot.

The Touchsmart 300-1120 is only 1.5 years old and it's hard drive is already fried.  I bought a new hard drive, ordered the recovery disks, and it still won't boot.  I've changed the boot order to go from the CD drive first, but all it does is click and then give the same error message it gave when the fired hard drive was in.  I checked the diagnostic, and it can see the new hard drive...it just won't boot.

Sometimes they do work - i've done it before.  I have a late 2008 Macbook Uni and used the install dvd of my 2009 Macbook White and it worked.
Why not just clone your hard drive?  It'll save you a lot of time doing a clone rather than doing a clean install.
Unless you're having issues with your old set up or  your old hard drive is dead.
You can download Carbon Copy Cloner - install your new hard drive in a external usb enclosure (around $10) and clone fromt here then test it before you install it in your Macbook.
Once you've done the swap, you can install your old hard drive in the USB enclosure and use it as a backup drive.
    Good luck

  • My HD has been replaced and when backing up from my time machine the transferred got interrupted

My HD has been replaced and when backing up from my time machine the transferred got interrupted. When Mac book booted only half the data. So I erased the hard drive to start again although I now can't restore from my time machine  as its saying not enough space on HD to restore. Please help coz I'm freaking out!

I seriously doubt that you can do that. I've never heard of anyone doing something like this. I also strongly suspect that that windows software didn't preserve all the resource fork, ownership and hard links correctly.
You are left with manual migration of your data back to your computer. this isn't as hard as you make it sound. You just need to copy you own stuff back. also use the following [post|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6185507] to migrate important parts of you user library, Mail, iphoto etc. You will have to reinstall your applications by hand.

  • I would like to know if you have to back up a macbook hard drive, can I use a external hard drive that has been previously used to back up several pc 's, or is it best to have a separate external drive for the Mac?

I would like to know if you have to back up a macbook hard drive, can I use a external hard drive that has been previously used to back up several pc 's, or is it best to have a separate external drive for the Mac?

In the Mac side of things, backups usually come in two flavors: clones or incrementals.
A bootable clone is a bit-for-bit copy of all essential files in the startup volume. If using the Lions, clones can be made using CarbonCopyCloner or just plain old Disk Utility. These backups represent the safest protection of your info, but take the longest to do. Recovery is an inverse process: you copy the clone back into the internal drive.
Incremental backups start with a complete backup of the startup volume and only copy whatever changed from the previous run. OS X includes the fully integrated Time Machine backup utility to do this. It is extremely easy to do and takes the least amount of time. Recovery is another matter altogether since you have to start with a freshly installed instance of the OS and have to apply all intervening backups to bring the result to the latest saved version.
As for where the backup takes place, the recommended media is an external dedicated drive or drives connected via the fastest interface available on your Mac: Thunderbolt, USB3, Firewire, or USB2. Network-based backups, wired or wireless, are attractive but may not offer the same performance and hence take longer. Also important to note that the entire drive need not be completely dedicated to a single backup. The Mac's EFI firmware infrastructure allows for an unlimited number of partitions on a hard drive and each can be used for either type of backups.
Holler if you need specifics on how to do each. This was just an executive summary.

Wow...I never thought there would ever be such a screwy problem like this on such a large scale....has anyone noticed how many similar posts have been posted in the last week or so? Not saying this never happens to anyone--in fact, it's happened to me beofre, but it was simple to fix...but the same problem happening with so many people at about the same time*...I don't know, it's kind of strange...anyway....
Yeah, I'm a Mac/Apple guy to the core, and have been since 7th grade (about 11-12 years now). Yet, I can't help but look at my iPod as if it has self-destructed. I was listening to it (w/ tape adapter, of course) on the way home in the car, then unplugged it for literally five minutes, got into my apartment, plugged it in my dell Latitude, and poof it had been reformatted. So, the moment I plugged it in, its funcionality basically vanished. The 5 R's have been useless thus far, and I can't even reformat using Explorer, because Windows tells me that the 1 GB iPod now has no storage capacity. ***? Strange, strange. Anyhow, sorry for the rambling, but this really confounds and frustrates me. APPLE....HELP US PLEASE!
*Don't get me wrong: I'm not a conspiracy nut; it's just hard to wrap my mind around this right now.

Record about my phone (bought in Verizon store and connected to Verizon for 4 years) has been corrupted and now I can not make any changes to my data plan. Several sessions with the technical support and management have not resolved this issue. Each time technical people and top managers promised that this issue will be resolve tomorrow and they will cal me. Nothing happend!! I can not even cancel my service not just to upgrade it. Completely locked.
    Any advice?
    Thanks.
    Alex.

Cannot figure out what your talking about since it makes no sense.
If you are the account owner you can go to the My Verizon web portal http://www.verizonwireless.com
You must log in with your cell number and your my Verizon portal password. Not the account pin.
Once there you can change your plan and services. However repeated incorrect login attempts will lock you out of the site. It a fraud prevention measure.
1-800-922-0204 call support with your cell number and or account number and account pin and they can assist you.
If you don't have the information then there is nothing they can do.
If you can verify who you are they may be able to reset your account access. But only if you are the account owner.
    Good Luck

    Hello dwb,
Here is the screen shot, just the top half, there are another 10 pages, but I guess this should enough for you to have an idea of waht is going on, bit small I am afraid. No, I don't have any apps setup to run when I open my computer, the kernel, varies between 290 and 305 per cent ish.
Would that PRAM thing help ? I think it may be the computer itself, well something inside, as this the first time that the fan has ever started running since I have this computer, even when I have 3 or 4 apps running.
Thank you again for your advice,

  • Macbook Pro 13" Late 2011 hard drive fails, how to replace hard drive?

    Hi!
I have a Macbook Pro 13" Late 2011 (OS X Mountain Lion v 1.3.18 (352.4). I tried to install OS X Mavericks but it showed this error message:
"This disk has S.M.A.R.T. errors. This disk has a hardware problem that can't be repaired. Back up as soon much data as possible and replace the disk."
The laptop was still doing fine so I didn't do anything. Then it started to act funny: iPhoto stopped working, hangs when I watch video streaming, and it started to run really slow. I only use the laptop's basic features- internet, watching movies, editing using iMovies so it's really strange for me that the hard drive failed all of a sudden.
I called Apple support and a kind fellow tried to troubleshoot it, thinking it was only a software problem. In the end, he said I need to bring my macbook to the service center and have the hard drive replaced. I know it will cost a lot so I want to replace the it myself.
    Here are my questions:
    1) Can this problem really be solved by just replacing the hard drive?
    2) Can I use SSD this time so my Macbook can run faster?
    3) What SSD is recommended for my late 2011 Macbook 13"?
    4) I don't have the installation disk, can I still install the OS X Mountain Lion? How?
I am looking for other sites as well but I hope this community could share some tips too.
    Thanks a lot!

I've switched out the hard drive on my Late 2011 model several times and I've never disconnected the battery cable.
In my "Opinion" it is not necessary to do that. Not sure if it is or not recommended by Apple.
    EDIT:
I just looked at my User Manual, PDF I downloaded from Apple, and there is no mention of disconnecting the battery.
Here's a link to the manual for my model.

  • Hard Drive failed both postive read and smart short self test

Hello, my Lenovo Think Pad's Hard Drive failed both targeted read  test (error code WHD20-HJF) and the smart self test (error code WHD16-KPY). I admit that I'm an older user and I have no idea what this means and what is the possible fix for it.
    I am open to all suggestions;
    THANKS,
    Octavious ONeal

    Hi, Octavious
When the hard drive fails those tests, it's an indication that the drive is dying. It's recommended to back up any valuble data on the hard drive and then replace it soon. The drive may still work for a little while, but it will likely stop working sometime soon.
    Hope it helps,
    Adam

  • Hard drive failing - Will AppleCare replace?

    Hello all,
I have a hard drive that occasionally starts to make the dreaded TOC TIC TOC TIC TOC sound. Once it is done with that, I hear a high frequency beep (from the hard drive) and then I hear the normal clatter that the drive makes when it first spins up. While all this is going on, the computer is frozen. I have experienced this countless times in the past on various computers. It basically means that failure is eminent. This started in December. Since then, it has happened with a frequency of about once a week.
I called AppleCare today. The person basically said to take my Mac to an Apple Store to verify that service is necessary. Only problem is that this issue is not repeatable. Am I suppose to sit at the Genius Bar all day until it happens?
My question is has anyone successfully had a hard drive replaced under the AppleCare program? Ideally I would like Apple to send me a new drive so that I can take my original drive and place it in an external case so I can transfer the data onto the new drive. Will they do this? Or do I have to take my iMac in? The problem is that all software tests of the hardware indicate that there is no issue. I ran TechTools Deluxe and the Apple Hardware Test, both indicate no issue.
    Any thoughts?
    Rev A 20" iMac G5, 1GB RAM, 250GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you all. My hard drive died and was without an internet connection. Just finished loading 10.3.6 onto my iMac. I still have my old drive, Apple has not replaced it yet. The short story is that my mac got to the point where I would boot it up and I would immediately receive a gray screen with instructions to power down the computer in several languages. I inserted my Tiger disc in hopes of reinstalling the OS, but it could not find a target disc to install to. I took the mac in to the Genius Bar. The tech did about the same thing I did, but he went to a disk utilities menu and found a corrupted directory structure. He ran a repair on the disk. After that, the drive was able to be mounted. Without pressing to get the drive replaced, I brought it back home because I did not like the idea of giving Apple my hard drive with 12 years of income tax forms on the drive. Wouldn't you know, as soon as I powered it up, it started clicking; it only last about 30 seconds. I have formatted the drive and installed 10.3.6 on it. I will be taking it back the Genius Bar hopefully tomorrow. I have a feeling though that these guys won't do anything unless there is some report or feedback indicating a hardware problem. I will let you all know how it pans out.
