My hard drive failed last year and was replaced under a scheme at an Apple Genius bar. I couldn't access my data to erase anything and the apple guy said he couldn't guarantee its safety. Since then I've been the victim of fraud twice. Coincidence?

I was told the hard drives were sent to China for refurbishment and the guy was pretty flippant about my concerns. I couldn't erase anything beacuse I couldn't access anything. I had to sign a waiver. He acted as if I was getting something for nothing and should quit complaining. Now my bank account and credit card have been compromised and it just seems a little too coincidental for my liking. Every single piece of my life was stored on that hard drive including photos of my kids and it makes me sick to think that someone could have accessed it. I think Apple should be more responsible and caring about their customers concerns. I have an ipad, imac and ipod touch and we have have other Apple laptops, phones, ipads and ipods in the family. I'm not sure I would happily buy any more items after such poor customer relations. I would rather have kept the old hard drive but apparently this wasn't an option. Fuming. Can't even remember half the accounts I've opened but will have to settle for changing all banking details. Buyer beware...

No hate. Not sure where you got that from. Just stating facts as I know them about the people employed at the Apple stores.
Yes you ARE, were, accusing whoever took in or had access to your old drive as the person or persons that is accessing your data to commit fraud against you. That is exactly what you stated in the title.
I think you are slightly paranoid.

Wow so much hate! I never insinuated that the guy was a genius or not, I just mentioned the name of the service. I also was not accusing him or an apple employee of fraud. My concern was that it would be compromised after its arrival in China. I have also been told by friends way more IT literate than me that removal of data from a failed hard drive is relatively simple with the right equipment and skills. Of course I am no genius in these areas myself and don't profess to be but I would expect a rather more sympathetic ear from the staff and possibly an explanation on the unlikelihood/likelihood of my data being stolen. Unlike the character assassination I appear to be getting from you. Thanks for your help. Have a nice day

Rather than do that, which means starting over from scratch, losing all your edits, organisation and so on, why not simply use iPhoto Library Manager to revert the Library to the older version? Easier, less destructive.
The instructions on that are here
If you really want to start over: you can access the Originals folder simply by going to your Pictures Folder and finding the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.

I entered Iphoto for my user and only photo up until 2012 were in the library.  I thought the restore would do the incremental Time Machine backups too.....

Sorry we are unclear as to the external hard drive and its connection to the TC..
For instance the light that blinks.. is that the TC or external hard disk or what.
Did you try just rebooting / restart the whole network in correct order.. modem.. router / TC.. external drive.. clients with 2min gap between each.
Are you actually running Snow Leopard as the profile states?
    How old is the TC?

  • External hard drive suddenly became "unreadable" and the disk utility offers not repair options.  The drive is visible in disk utility but may not be mounted... any suggestions?

I have a WD My Passport 070A Media 2.0 TB external hard drive that has suddenly become unreadable on my laptop (MacBook Pro circa 2006 with 10.4.11) and I have tried on a MacBook Pro 2011 running 10.6.8 with the same results.  I had tried opening disk utility to repair the drive, but on both machines the drive is visible in the left column, with no indentation below the drive.  When I select the drive in the first aid portion the only options highlighted are info and eject...  I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to repair the drive.  I am currently in Belize and am not home for 3 weeks yet.  I'm hoping for a fix while I am down here, otherwise I may have to wait...  I appreciate any assistance!

  • My 5 year old iMac's hard drive is at the point of failing.  I'm trying to save al files on it, but it wont allow backup via Time Machine to an external hard drive.  How can I keep from losing all the files and programs if the hard drive fails?

I'm concerned that my iMac, purchased 5 years ago, is about the crash and I can't back up my files and programs to an external hard drive via Time Machine because the computer freezes after only a couple hundred MB and gets nowhere near the required amount.
How can I save these files and programs if the computer hard drive fails or has to be replaced without the backup being able to be done? I need to do something quickly, but I'm not sure what I can or should be doing.

Get an external hard drive, some good ones that I like are the OWC, http://www.macsales.com Mercury Elite Pro drives...they are very good and reasonably priced.
Get the drive, connect via USB or FireWire, then use Disk Utility to format the new drive as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), and then use Disk Utility to Restore the current drive to the new drive.  Restore actually clones the drive so you will have a bootable backup on the external drive.
After you have formatted and named the external drive, click Restore in the main Disk Utility window, drag the name of the old hard drive to the Source box, and drag the name of the new external drive to the Destination box.  DU will make an exact clone of the internal drive on the external drive.
That clone will be a complete backup of the operating system and all of your data.
You can test it by restarting the iMac and hold the Option key.  That will give you a grey screen showing all bootable drives.  Just click the external drive, then click the upward pointing arrow under it and the iMac will boot from that drive.

  • Hard Drive Failed Need Help!

Hey guys, heres my story. My hard drive failed last week (wouldnt go past white screen), took it to genius bar, they ran Disk Warrior and it seemed to fix it. As a precautionary measure I bought a 1tb external drive and backep up my system via time machine. Today my imac froze and I am having the same problem, wont boot past white screen. I am 2 months out of my warranty and need to know what is the easiest fastest and cheapest fix since I am a college student. Also are any of these options possible?
    1) Install OS X as a clean system and use my external HD to load my system.
    2) Buy another external HD and boot up from that?
    3) Buy another internal HD and have someone install it (not sure how much this would cost though)
If anyone can help me out I would really appreciate it.

All 3 of those are possible however #1 and 2 are not favorable. I would suggest to first run a few tests to make sure that your hard drive is actually bad.
    1) The first test like Larry suggested is to boot up to your Mac OS install disk, but do not go through the installation process. Instead go to the Utilities Menu at the top and open Disk Utility. If your drive does not show up in the left hand column then the drive is likely bad.
    2) Insert the original iMac install disk like in step 1 but this time when you startup hold down the "d" key. This will load up the Apple Hardware Test. Run the Extended test. If it passes everything then this means your computer is ok just the hard drive is bad.
    3) However if in step 1 Disk Utility does see the hard drive first try Repairing the Disk. If this fails you might try reformatting the drive and reinstalling Mac OS X as the problem could be an issue with the system software.
    4) Which should actually be step 1 is to disconnect all of your external devices like hard drives and see if you still cannot boot. Keep everything disconnected during testing.
The problem is hard drive failures can be intermittent. One minute it works the next minute it doesn't even see a hard drive. Good luck though and let us know how it goes.

  • Macbook Pro Hard Drives Failing

    Hi all,
I've been having massing problems with my Macbook Pro 15" 2.53 Ghz laptop. I got one brand new with apple care in December of 2008. The hard drive was the standard 320 Gb @ 5400 RPM.
Within approximately two weeks of operation the computer failed (froze and after a hard shutdown wouldn't boot). It turned out the hard drive failed. Two weeks! So I took it back to Apple and they replaced the hard drive (took them one week so I lost a week of productivity).
One week after receiving the laptop back, the hard drive failed again! This time I believe the OS got corrupted somehow as the symptom was that it would not boot.
So back to Apple and they straight out replaced it with a new one. One week later, guess what? Failure. So back again and they replaced it.
I'm now on my 3rd laptop from Apple and this hard drive is failing. Luckily I was able to back everything up. I downloaded a utility called SMART Utility and it tells me 60 some sectors are bad on this disk.
Is anyone else having issues like this? Its absolutely ridiculous. Currently the computer is working despite the failed sectors and horrible sounds coming from the hard drive but I expect failure soon. I'll be taking this back to Apple and showing them the results of the SMART Utility, but I'm at the end of the rope here.
I've owned multiple Macbook Pros before and absolutely loved them. But now I am so disillusioned by this... To Apple's credit they have had great customer service, but now I'm at the point where I need to be able to rely on my machine.
    Has anyone heard anything?

I would second Michael's comment. While hard drives do fail, the rate at which yours are failing would appear to be well beyond the statistical average. I would generally think the next level would be a problem with the MacBook itself causing the failures, but from what I can tell from your comment is that they have replaced your MacBook twice (and you're on your third?). So that would seem to rule out a problem with the MacBook itself. You mentioned that you've had other MacBooks before and it doesn't sound like you've had problems with them... so I wouldn't expect that you're doing anything unusual that would cause the problem.
You're either had a remarkable run of bad luck, or there's something going on that's out of the ordinary causing these drives to fail. I would imagine that when stores get machines, they're likely shipped from batches that are manufactured at similar times. If they had a batch of faulty drives from the manufacturer, it's possible a single store could have gotten several of them. That would still not really explain why your initially replaced drive failed as it would likely have come from a totally different batch than what would have been used in manufacturing at the time your notebook was put together. I guess it's always possible that they might put in a drive that that wasn't new.

  • Hard Drive Fail after install Photoshop CS6?

Hi! I downloaded Photoshop CS6 six days ago. Three days later my hard drive failed... and now can not find the installation. The repair put my system back to a previous time when the computer worked fine. Did this erase the install???

What is your operating system & version?
If Windows, how was the system reset - by System Restore?  Or a complete restore from backup?
While a System Restore will leave the installed programs in your Program Files, all registry data and system files will have disappeared.  So either way you will have to reinstall.

  • My hard drive failed...Can you restore files from i-pod

My hard drive failed. Most stuff was backed up, but not one large folder of MP3 files. All of the songs in question are on my i-pod, but I cannot for the life of me find a way to get the i-pod to transfer the files on to the new hard drive.
Does anyone know of a way to do this?
The music was purchased from a site other than the i-store BTW, and re-downloading it all in very manual if I get stuck having to do that. It seems like it should be possible to just send it all back over from the i-pod. I'm baffled.
    Thanks!

  • Swapping hard drives between PXI-8115 and PXI-8105 won't boot up

I have a test system running Windows XP on PXI-8105.  I've upgraded the entire test system for another project and need to upgrade my existing systems; the upgrade runs on Windows 7 and PXI-8115.  I have new hard drives with Windows 7 and the new test software which were loaded/configured/tested on a PXI-8115, but I need to retrofit the PXI-8105 with them.  This doesn't work.  Windows begins to boot but fails and tries over and over again.  In an effort to take the PXI-8105 off-line to troubleshoot, I replaced it with one of the PXI-8115 and the old (WinXP) drive.  This didn't boot up, either.
Here's a summary of my situation:
An old system has PXI-8105 running WinXP
A new system has PXI -8115 running Win7
A hard drive (with Win7) from the PXI-8115 won't boot on the PXI-8105
A hard drive (with WinXP) from the PXI-8105 won't boot on the PXI-8115
What is different between the two PXI controllers that keeps me from swapping hard drives?

You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are. ~ Alice
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    A couple thoughts:
    1. Windows 7 probably works fine on a PXI-8105. Although NI never officially supported or shipped that configuration, I suspect that the default Windows 7 installation contains enough of the driver support needed to boot up.
    2. In general, Windows is not very tolerant of swapping hard drives between completely different systems, especially with Windows XP and prior. Consider whether just installing fresh and copying over what you need is faster than trying to do this, but if you must, I would suspect that Windows 7 would be more tolerant of the swap.
    3. As a debugging step, try pressing 'F8' during the boot process to launch the Windows boot menu and try safe mode or some of the other options.  More information here.
    4. If all else fails, Google is your friend here as there's nothing particularly specific about this being an NI product that you need to know when attempting this operation. Any information you find online about swapping hard drives between PCs should be relevant to your situation. Searching for 'swap hard drive to new computer windows 7' gave some useful hits on the first page. Beyond that, you can also look into using the 'sysprep' utility to try and clean the system and prepare for swapping to a new PC.
