My hard drive has about a 70GB difference between it's "size" and "used" properties. I can't find that 70GB anywhere.

My Hard Drive has about 32GB of "Used" space, which matches the amount in the subfolders, but its Size in Finder is at 101GB, and I can't copy larger items to the drive.  Any ideas?

The 70 GB may be local snapshots.

  • I create a new partition in an external hard drive with disk utility. Now it says mounting disk and it's taking forever. Is that normal? Please help!

I have an external hard drive from seagate. Tonight I decided to give it a try and add a new partition to it so I could have a bootable version of mountain lion in it it just in case of emergency and no internet. After creating the partition, disk utility says "mountain disk", and its been doing it for at least 20 minutes and not moving... Any ideas? btw, now the external drive is not even showing on the left-side bar...
    Thanks!

I would try reformatting the drive and creating the partition again. Make certain that you erase the drive and format it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and the partition the drive.
What you describe is not normal... try again.

  • Difference between Name columns, Attributes, and Member properties

I am studying for the "70-463 Implementing a Data Warehouse with Microsoft SQL Server 2012" exam. I am using the "Training Kit (Exam 70-463): Implementing a Data Warehouse with Microsoft SQL Server 2012".
In chapter 1 of this book the different columns of dimension are explained., however I fail to understand the difference between the following column types:
    - Name columns: Used for human names of entities
    - Attributes: Used for pivoting in analyses
    - Member properties: Used for labels in a report
As far I can understand all those three are labels and can be used interchangeable. Am I correct? Or am I wrong? I suppose there might be some practical differences, but how can you tell?
I would really appreciate some examples showing the same data in a LOB
(OLTP), data warehouse (star schema), and data mart (OLAP cube) form.
    Thank in advance.

If I understand correctly the difference is about context or how you use the column.
I did some further reading, and now I understand that an attribute can consists multiple columns. This way the following is possible:
An attribute can be combined of multiple columns: e.g. the attribute address can combined by the apartment number, house number, street name, ZIP code, city, state, and country.
An attribute can be column which is also part of another attribute: e.g. apartment number, house number, street name, ZIP code, city, state, and country can all be attributes own their own and simultaneously be part of the address attribute. The difference
is the context which depends on business needs and technical requirements.
An attribute can also consists of multiple columns which are aliases. This can be needed to support multiple languages or allow user friendly names (which allows spaces and funny characters) to coexist with technical names (which use a more restricted naming
convention and typically use camel case.) Another example would be an additional column for abbreviations which might be needed for narrow column headers. Depending on the context a specific column can be used.

  • Whats the difference between a combo update and using software update?

I keep my Macbook up to date by checking regularly via software update, so far with no mishaps, but I have seen people on these forums mentioning that a it is better to download the combo updates direct from Apples website. Is this true, if so why, and what is the difference? I am thinking of installing Leopard which would then probably need updating to the current version, so what is the correct way of doing this?

There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac, or even re-installing them, will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
The 10.4.11 Combo Updater for PPC Macs is here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eppc.html
And for Intel Macs: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eintel.html
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1338
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta. If Safari 3.1.2 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 3.0.4 (or worse still, version 2) when running 10.4.11 or 10.5 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.1.1 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, and may entail you having to reinstall an earlier operating system.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

According to your storage parameters it only requires 14772 rows that have lob values that are stored out of row, i.e. larger than approx. 4k. For each lob segment 1M will be allocated at least, so that might a reasonable explanation.
Not sure where I had my mind when writing this, but this is certainly wrong (and no one complaining...).
You could have a lot of deleted rows in the table, or LOBs that were larger but shrinked now, or you could hit a storage allocation bug.
What is the block size of the tablespace for the LOBs?

  • Differences between MDM 3.0 and MDM 5.5?

    Hi,
Can anybody tell, what are the differences between MDM 3.0 and MDM 5.5?
I heard that, there are lot and lot of changes...
    Thanks for your reply,
    regrads,
    cg

We can look at differences in more than one way:
    1. Technology wise
MDM5.5 is developed in C++ & runs on a C++ engine as compared to MDM 3.0 which runs under WAS
However MDM 5.5 is integrated with NW largely, though it can & is planned to be improved further
    2. Product Catalog Management
MDM 5.5 has rich PCM capabilities which did not exist in MDM 3.0
    3. Other additional capabilities in 5.5
    Multilingual support
Syndication of data to XI or file system
Lean, R/3 Idoc based model for supplier, customer, material, employee
    4. Ease of installation and usage is a also an advantage of 5.5
You can read Nitza Levi's blog on MDM home page for more details

  • What's the difference between wcc system components and standard components

    hi Experts,
My customer has a question on the difference between wcc system components and standard components, I didn't find it from doc, anyone can help on answering this?
    Best regards

    Hi ,
System components are those which are providing the basic functionalities on UCM server by default . Standard components are those which are provided as-in on the server but need to be enabled per case basis . For example Framework Folders which is not necessary for the basic functionalities but is needed if user wants to .
This guide gives the administration level overview for UCM  : http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/doc.1111/e10792/toc.htm
    Hope this helps .

  • What is the difference between Component,Server,Tool and Software?

    HI,
What is the difference between Component,Server,Tool and Software?
    SHABEER

    Hi
Every individual part that constitutes in making an SAP System is called a COMPONENT.e.g DB instance, Java CI, ABAP CI etc
SERVER is the actual composition of different components of SAP.e.g. a database alongwith can instance would constitue an application server.
TOOLS are the products from different organisations (SAP or Non SAP) that can be used for different functionalities like keeping a check on jobs, monitoring of the system , e.g Tivoli
SOFTWARES are a kind of tool that help you to bring up results from the system in a user acceptable format. These are utilities that act as interfaces between the user and the system.

  • Difference between SAP R/3 and SAP - AFS

    Hi
What is the Difference between SAP R/3 and SAP - AFS ?
Can any one compare using the key features/functinalities.
    Thanks
    Maruthi Ram

    Hi,
Main difference is AFS material are avialiable with grid value (Shade and size)
Advantage of this is reduction of material creation .
You dont have to create multiple code for material having different sizes . Single material would be covering all shade and sizes .

I just got a new MacBook Pro, and I tried to bring across my files from my last mac using time machine. After it was done copying I can't find my files anywhere but the space (about 130gb) has been used on my hard drive. Does anyone know how I can get to them? I did change my user name from 'user' while it was copying, could this have something to do with it?

You don't want to do that by copying.
Your best bet, by far, is to use Setup Assistant.  If your Mac is running Snow Leopard, see Using Setup Assistant on Snow Leopard or Leopard.
If it came with Lion, it's a bit different: Using Setup Assistant on Lion

  • My iMac G5's Hard Drive Has Most Likely Failed

So my hard drive has been having problems since November 2005, but the computer has been barely holding out, until now. The computers just dead. I got this message from
It happened at the most random time. Yesterday morning, I turned on my computer and opened Safari. Everything went just fine, and about 3/4 way through loading the apple startpage, the entire computer froze up.
I tried disk utility but it froze while verifying and repairing disk permissions (about 1/8 started and it froze) and when I did verify disk, it came up with a popup window stating:
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
And then in the Disk Utility information window where it says the status that its at (Checking....) it said this:
    Checking HFS Plus Volume
    Checking Extents Overflow File
    Checking Catalog File
    Invalid Sibling Link
    Volume Check Failed
The underlying task reported failure on exit.
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
Then I ran fsck in single-user mode, and i got this:
    #fsck -fy
    disk0s3: I/O timeout
    (4, 7808)
I'm not sure what the coordinates mean. I'm thinking they might be the coordinates to a bad sector that may be screwing EVERYTHING up because the computer failed to recognize the bad sector, and close it off of any further use.
After that I ran diskutility in single-user mode thinking maybe the GUI version was corrupted... but I let the diskutil verifyPermissions /dev/disk0s3 run for an hour and nothing showed up on the screen so i just decided to stop, shut down, and go to bed.
So now i've figured, my iMac has given me enough trouble as it is. ive had so many problems with it... ever since november 2005 (5 months into owning it) it has had the following hard drive error code show up in extended test for the Apple Hardware Test ever since... and about 1 hour ago, i retested it, and sure enough this came up:
    **ERROR*CODE***ERROR*CODE**
    2STF/8/3: S-ATA Bus O-Master
    **ERROR*CODE***ERROR*CODE**
I'm really not happy with mac right now. I think their 1 year warranty is useless and they pretty much leave you screwed if you dont buy their applecare protection plan.
I have a windows 98 (upgraded from 95) that i bought way back in 1997, and its still functional... with the same hard drive... same everything... and it works just fine... except for the memory is small because back then 128 GB was the biggest it got) :P
so a 5 GB hard drive going on its 10th working years, and this 150 GB hard drive failed after 14 months... all i've gotta say is: Apple, thats pretty pathetic... especially after you mock PC in their commercials for "breaking down". Ive actually had less problems with all of my 3 PCs combined then I've had with this **** iMac.
So now heres what i'm trying to figure out. i'm wondering, what kind of hard drive i shuold buy to replace it... i tried the DIY hardware replacement ordering page but it says that the apple website couldnt find it (http://www.apple.com/support/imac/g5/diy/).
I wasnt planning on buying from the apple DIY anyway, but I wanted to see if it would specify a type of hard drive. Where is the popular website to go to buy these things, and how expensive will it be for me to replace it with a hard drive about as big as my current one).
Or should I not throw my hard drive away yet, and invest hope in it somehow. I heard DiskWarrior could do the trick, but I dont want to have to spend $80 on a piece of software that might not even work out right. And all the free ones you have to download to your mac... but too bad for me, my mac wont even start up... (well it does but when it gets to the desktop, its pretty much unfunctional... just a moving mouse that wont do anything).
Is there some renouned website (as crucial.com is for memory) among these forums that you might suggest?
I'm open and desperate for any input i can get. The sooner the better
    Thanks in advance

Hey look, its my friend Charlie from my Disk Permissions Error -36 post.
Here's our thread from last time. Alot of the stuff there still pertains: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=620422&tstart=0
It turns out the reformat I did only worked for a little while. Then last friday, my kernel was corrupted, and so i did "Erase All" but skipped the "Zero All Data" figuring that it wouldnt be necessary since I wasnt discarding my drive, so there wasnt anything to secure from anyone recovering private data. It worked for 4 days after that, and now I'm here again. With problems.
Do you remember getting disk I/O errors on disk0s3?
If you remember way back then, I had gotten this error when I did diskutil list in Terminal:
    Aug 30 21:42:08 mark-imac-g5 kernel[0]: disk0s3: I/O error.
    /dev/disk0
    #: type name size identifier
    0: Applepartitionscheme *149.1 GB disk0
    1: Applepartitionmap 31.5 KB disk0s1
    2: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 148.9 GB disk0s3
I'm running DiskWarrior right now (borrowed it from a friend... didnt feel up to paying the $80 & have it potentially not work) and its stuck at this message:
    Rebuilding Directory Data
    [ |||||||||||Solid Progress Bar||||||||||| ]
    Step 5: Locating Directory Data
    [\\\\\\\Barbershop-like Progress Bar\\\\\\\]
Speed inhibited by disk malfunction (Skip) (Cancel)
Its been stuck there for about an hour, and I'm assuming its not going to work as you suggested it wouldn't
It's too late to do any good now, but if you ever run the
hardware test and get an error code, you should have Apple
look at it. If you were getting that error code 5 months
after the computer was new, a replacement drive would have
    been covered under your warranty.
I wish I had actually done so. I was a mac-noob back then so I had no idea what anything was, and I was still getting used to the actual working-with-a-mac thing (ive been a Windows user for most of my life except for working/helping teachers with their macs at school... i was always the computer-person in school... it was pretty awesome :P)
I have to disagree with the other posters. I don't think >DiskWarrior is going to help you. Data Rescue II might help >you to get some files off your hard drive if you have files >on there that aren't backed up. But my experience was that >when I got the error in the hardware test, DiskWarrior >didn't work.
Right now I have everything backed up that I need, so it's not like i'm using DiskWarrior to get my data back. I just want a program to be able to tell the hard drive that these certain sectors that are acting up and causing the hard drive to fail are ruined and to not use them anymore. If its not just 1 sector, but the entire hard drive that is failed, I'm not even gonna bother salvaging it (even though i'm sure if it was completely failed there would be no way of getting it back that deep into failure).
I read at this website about someone else who had a similar problem to mine (http://www.desktoppublishingforum.com/bb/archive/index.php/t-901.htmldiskwarrior+speed+inhibited+by+diskmalfunction&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=2):

And now the latest reply from Marc the support tech:
There have been a handful who have seen success after four
or five days with the "speed inhibited by disk
malfunction" message. There have also been a few
up to a week. From there, admittedly, the state
of the drive has to be pretty damaged for DiskWarrior to
run so long, although the speed DiskWarrior can work is
also related to the speed of the processor, so four days
for a G3 is different than four days for a G5.
    She later posted this:
,..for a variety of reasons I ended up letting DW chug away on my drive for a few days shy of an entire month.
    *UPDATE MID WRITING THE POST*
Disk warrior finally unfroze! It's now Comparing Directories (recording any file or folder differences).
I'll post more when it's all done
Or if i have trouble mid-way

  • My hard drive is about maxed out, what are my options

I have a MacBook that is about 5 years old.  My hard drive is about maxed out.  Trying to determine if it is worth trying to get a larger hard drive, whether I just go to a portable hard drive (a bit of a pain since I travel so much) or something else.  Don't think I can even upgrade to Mountain Lion because of lack of hard drive space.  I love my Mac, but am looking at possibly going to an iPad for travel as the Mac is heavy and I have to carry two computers (work and personal).  Considered buying a new Mac, say an Air, but don't have that kind of cash to drop for it.
Would appreciate any opinions out there?  If I upgrade the hard drive, what kind of money are we talking about?

Here are instructions on replacing the hard drive in a MacBook with a removable battery. http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088
To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application SuperDuper. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.
Here's a cheap SATA external hard drive case on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Vantec-NexStar-2-5-Inch-External-Enclosure/dp/B002JQNXZC/r ef=pd_cp_pc_0
If you don’t have the tools to open up the MacBook OWC has a set for $5
