My hard drive is failing, need a new one. What kind should I buy for a Mac osx 10.4.11 Tiger.

Also I have backed up all my data on a mercury elite external hard drive. But it would not allow me to clone my drive. Possible due to the error, failing hard drive. How would I get my data back on the new drive?

You can run you Mac from an external harddrive. I do not notice much difference when I run from an external drive.
You need to use a coloning program to get the external hd to boot.

You need to read your router's configuration instructions on how to access the router's menu.
Hopefully you can access that and in the wireless security menu you will find the passkey to use.

You need to find your old profile in your old hard drive. Maybe you will need unhide the hidden files and folders:

As I stated my late 2009 iMac 27 inch hard drive failed and is being replaced.. I am being charged as machine does not qualify for the call back program..call backs are on 2011 machines.. However i am in shock that my segate internal iMac hard drive failed in less than two years.. are there others with similar issue? Also when I get machine back will new hard drive be stable .. How do I make sure my working environment is reliable.. Just to update everyone and maybe help people down the road .... It has been a week of **** .... I may have finally solved a problem that I have seen a ton of people in all different types of discussions around the world having trouble with ...... I am going to upload some pictures of what I was getting in the beginning and it came out of no where .... I had the random pixel problem with my display and to make a long story short I came across an article two days ago regarding internal temperatures and fan speed ...... I kept reading about apples approach which is not the point ..... More importantly I dug deeper into temperature control and fan settings .... I discovered all kinds of software and there is only one in my eyes that can help anyone dealing with this display problem .... I will be honest, I do not have the money right now for anything extra and am barely getting by and that is why I kept at it ... I figured keep trying different things because a repair is out of the question ... http://www.crystalidea.com/macs-fan-control - This program has solved my problem - I get to adjust three internal temperatures inside my Imac and slowly but surely as the temperatures remained constant the display is fine .... Like new again .... I cant believe it ..... Turns out the ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB graphics card gets very hot causing it to not do what it is supposed to ..... Anyone that has any questions do not hesitate to contact me ...... I am going to upload some pics .... I am trying to move my old external hard drive (time machine ) to a new one

I have tried to move my old external drive time machine to a new external drive:
1. have formated the new time external hard drive
2. I have unlocked and ignored the drives ownership
3. I have turn of the new hard drive and them tried dragging the file (backups.backupdp) to my new external hard drive
when I do that a message come up that says "this volume has that wrong case sensitivity for a backup"
What does this mean and how do I fix it?

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. All existing data on the destination volume will be erased. That shouldn't be a problem, because you don't want to mix backup and non-backup data on the same drive anyway. Turn Time Machine OFF in its preference pane while copying the volume.

There are some recovery programs out there if you google them - many with free trials. I haven't tried them so I have no opinion.Read any professional tech and user reviews you can find before you try one. I have read here in the past that some have worked for people who have posted here.
To help in the future, have you considered using Jump Desktop - Remote Desktop? I know it won't solve the problem you're dealing with now (unless notes were taken on your computer.) It's in the app store. It's the #1 paid app in the business category and the reviews are great. It allows you to see anything that's on your computer on your ipad. If you take your notes on your ipad then you might want to email them to yourself, put them on Word in your computer, for example, and then if you need them in class, you remotely connect your ipad to your computer and you will see your notes. This way you won't have to rely so much on the cloud. The explanation would be too long here, but you might want to take a look at it. You can use the free trial on jumpdesk.com and then if it works for you, buy it in the app store.
Meanwhile, it's hours since you sent this post. Hopefully others who can help solve your problem who are on this forum now can help you. I hope you get your notes back. Don't give up too quickly.

Formatting will erase the drive.
You need to copy the photo's to either your old computer, the Mac Mini or to a new external drive and then decide what to do with your existing external drive.
For example: You could use one External drive for Photo's and one external drive for Time Machine to backup both your Mac Mini and the Photo drive.

Buy an external USB hard drive and copy your data to it. Either that or burn them all to single or double layer DVDs (depending on amount of data you have). Or if it's really a small amount, consider putting it all on a USB memory stick.

If it only failed in 8 days.. I just return the drives back to newegg and get a different brand like western digital. NewEgg has a 30 day return policy.
If you deal with any hard drive manufacturer now, they will give you a refurbished item and not a new item that you are entitled.

even if it still passed Apple tests.. it does not mean logicboard is fine..... it just means it passes the tests.
At this point, If i were you, I would just go back to NewEgg and send back the Seagates letting know they are bad and prefer a different brand such as Western Digital.
Install the Western Digitals and see how long they last. If they fail again in a a short amoung of time, it's the logicboard then.
This is based on experience in dealing with repairs with Macs, PCs, and other various kinds of Servers and computers over the last 10+ years.
In fact, One of my clients who has a Dual 4-core Intel Xeon Server with a Supermicro logicboard, one of their SATA drive ports are bad. Every 4 months like clock work the Mirror RAID Drive would degrade on that port. Then after figuring out that the drives are not necessary bad, I swapped to using another spare SATA port and since then no problems.
