My hard drive isn't showing up

I am having a problem. It seems like my computer can't see the hardrive. I have started up using the install disk and ran disk utility and it said the it had repaired the hard drive. If I run disk verify it fails. Disk utility isn't even finding the hard drive now. I have run apple hardware diognostic and it told me that everything was ok.
Any ideas?

Well the machine that I'm currently using is my wife's PC. The Western digital is a fire wire drive. It has the room to put the OS on it. It's currently set up as my time machine drive. I can try loading the Os on it and see if I can use it as the start up drive and see it the Hard drive is accessable that way.
By the way I appreciate your patience with my problem. I believe you had advised me to clone this drive a couple of weeks ago on a different thread and I had to put if off, now I wish I hadn't.

External Hard Drive Isn't showing up.

Today i was moving some files on and off my WD 1T harddrive for about an hour or so when it just stopped reading? I didn't move it at all while it was in use. The name of the hard drive in the side bar just turned a grey colour and froze. It would not eject so i had to pull the cord out. Iv tryed to put it in to 3 different computers (all macs) and still the same issue. All the lights still turn on when i plug it in and i can hear it start up but its just not being picked up on the computer (not showing up in disc utility either). if someone could please help me it would be greatly appreciated. cheers

External Hard Drive no longer showing in Devices

My external hard drive no longer shows up as a device on my MBP. It has worked fine since the day I plugged it in.
The Time Machine is using the HD, and continues to do it's backups, so power and USB connection is not an issue
The HD shows up in Disk Utility (The Time Machine portion AND the partition that I've been using for storage)
I ran a repair on the partition in Disk Utility and it checks out OK
I can access this partition from VMware Fusion, so the windows side of the MBP sees it, and it's operational
Used the HD all day yesterday without issue
I've restarted the MBP to see if it would find the HD partition after a restart, it doesn't
I've unplugged (USB) and powered-off the HD, and when I power-on, it still isn't seen.
Any ideas?

If TM is turned on and it still doesn't show up then do a SMC reset.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
Wait 15 seconds.
Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

The drive's directory is damaged and as you found Disk Utility isn't equipped to repair it. You need Disk Warrior or Tech Tool Pro.

I've also been getting an image with the folder and question mark. I've tried everything on the apple support page but it doesn't seem to work either.

Well, I tried all of your suggestions and they didn't work -- no surprise because I was trying to backup to my external c.d. disk. Duh! The application for the home is in the mail.

hope you can help.
I have an external hard drive that I use as a TIme Machine Drive, the other day my wife decided I was wasting electricy by having the hard drive on, si se turned it off without ejecting it, thanks love.
Now the Hard drive wont show up on the desk top, I've ched the system preferences ans that's set to show extrernal hard drives.
Profiler shows the USB hard drive as there.
Disk Utility shows the hard drive, Wrong name but the right serial number. but it wont let me repair, erase or partition.
Suggestions on how to get this fixed would be epic, I'm guessing that my iMac just didn'y like it when the drive wasn't ejected correctly, I'm hoping there is away to sort the problem without replacing the drive.

I borrowed a friends and switched mine with hers. My acted the same way in her macbook. I switched the cords on the external drives, no change.
Also, Is there a way to retrieve the information from my sick external hard drive? Thanks for your help.

If the Disk Utility sees it, you might be able to repair it or recover the data on it with a product such as DiskWarrior or Data Rescue.
If the Disk Utility doesn't see it, contact professional support.

External Hard Drive does not show up in Finder

My external hard drive is not showing up in Finder.
It shows up in Disc Utility, but I do not have access to it. I have tried the following:
command-shift c, nothing happens
confirmed in Preferences/General that external hard drive was checked
tried another cable
tried another port on the back of the external drive
tried to connect through the USB port
re-started, etc.

That means the directory is corrupt. If you have a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app, such as +Disk Warrior,+ it may be able to fix it. Otherwise, your only option is to erase and reformat the disk. They're not cheap -- Disk Warrior is about $100. And for Leopard, you need version 4.1.1 or 4.2.

External Hard Drive is Not Showing Up on Desk top?

My external hard drive is not showing up on my desk top any more. When I tried to reconnect it I get the follow message.
You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read. To use the unreadable volumes, click Initialize.
Help what should I do? I have 50 GB of music on it and it's never had this problem before.

Norton has a bad reputation because they have not kept up with changes in the Mac file structure. Norton version 8 is the one you should be using, if you choose to use it. Earlier versions will likely damage your directory, possibly beyond repair by other utilities.
Any time you use any Disk Repair Utility, it is somewhat of a crap shoot. It may or may not be able to make the repair, and you may or may not lose a few to very many files in the process. The program best respected in this arena is Disk Warrior. If you choose to buy it, pay very close attention to which version you are buying, as the latest version CD (intended to boot 10.3 or 10.4) may not boot on your Mac.

After security update my hard drive will not show

G4 Tower - Mac OS X - 733mhz.. After a security update 2 days ago i can not get my computer to boot. It comes up to the gray apple screen and just sits there. I put the install dvd in and went to disk utilities, but the hard drive does not show up at all. I tried to boot the computer in target mode from my laptop. It goes into target mode, but the drive never shows up on the screen. I put disk warrior in the laptop and launched it, and it seen the drive as a firewire drive, but the only option was to rebuild. I have a lot of info on the drive, and am hoping that I do not have to go to that extreme. Please help...

I think you are misunderstanding what disk Warrior will do, and how it does its magic. Disk Warrior is a wonderful, powerful, tool and works well for many people. When it suggests a ReBuild, it is saying your drive is recognized and intact enough to attempt to construct a new (proposed) Directory.
It will scavenge all the information it can find from every possible source (including the existing Directory) and build a new (proposed) Directory of all your recoverable files. If the damage is not severe, nearly all your files will be included in the new (proposed) Directory.
It then lists the differences between the new (proposed) Directory files compared to the old (existing) Directory files, and invites you to look at them side-by-side, if you like. ONLY if you approve, will it replace your old damaged Directory with the new (proposed) one. If you choose not to replace your old Directory, it just quits and nothing is changed on your Drive.

Hard drive (internal) not showing up on desktop

One of my internal hard drives is not showing up on the desktop. (Soft freeze after waking from sleep mode. I pushed the reset button on the front of the tower. Haven't seen anything on that hard drive since. I haven't been able to access it since.)
Hard drive shows up in disk utility but I can't mount it. Looks something like this:
74.5 GB WDC WD800JB-00CRA1
There is nothing below that. (Normally indented below is the name ie. Macintosh HD)
I cannot verify or repair disk or disk permissions. I cannot mount it. All these options are grayed out. I took it to the Apple store genius bar. They think the disk is fine but "the partition is lost." (I didn't partition the hard drive. Don't really understand what that means.) I've tried Data Rescue (369 hours remaining) nothing is being recovered.
I've tried Disk Warrior. In the "Hardware" option I can choose the disk and run a test. It says it is fine. ("This hard drive's built-in S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics indicate the drive is functioning normally. Test complete") In the "Directory" option the disk doesn't show up. So I can't rebuild the directory.
What else can I do?

The Apple System Profiler shows all the correct info except the name is "unknown." The only 2 places that seem wrong are the desktop - no hard drive, and in Disk Utility. I don't know what it's called, but the line directly under the listed hard drive in Disk Utility (74.5 GB WDC WD800JB-00CRA1) should have the name of the hard drive (Macintosh HD) listed but it does not. It should look like this but with an icon of a hard drive in front of each line:

The second line (Macintosh HD) is not there. The other hard drives have their names listed. Apple seems to think this is a problem but other than running Data Rescue and Disk Warrior (neither of which did anything) they have not given me any other suggestions.
The computer knows the hard drive is there but it won't let me access it. I have done, tried, and checked all the easy stuff. (Cables, any and every type of connection, restarting holding down option + apple + F + O and all the other restart variations with and without the OSX CD, and running "rescue" programs.) Nothing has worked. Short of an exorcism, I'm out of ideas.

- You can try disabling the camer notification

- Do you have any camera, scanner or similar software installed? That may prevent iTunes from seeing the iPod.
