In warranty that notice if come from the hard drive is a signs of imminent drive failure and you should copy your data/files off ASAP and contact HP warranty support to have your hard drive replaced.

  • Hard drive is noisy

hello, i have an hp elitebook 8570w, running on windows 7 64 bit. it is fairly new (around 4 months old). it has been extremely noisy in the past few days (4 or so), and i am pretty sure the noise is coming from the hard drive. the noise begins as soon as i boot up my computer so it doesnt have to do with it heating up. before that the computer would heat up often because i sometimes put it on my bed, which i know is not the best place to put it. after the noise started i bought a cooling board so now the computer never gets hot at all. the noise is coming from the left side under the laptop. and it is a constant huming or grinding like sound (pretty supid description, but i dont know how to explain it), it is fairly loud and it´s been driving me crazy. also no clicking or anything. i believe it comes from the hard drive, but i am not an expert so i cant be sure. my hard drive model is "hitachi hts727550a9e364". i tried to defrag it, but it was 0% fragmented, since the computer is fairly new. i also have an antivirus, and i did a full scan and the computer was not infected. it hasn't caused any apparent performance issues. please help me, this sound is driving me crazy, i cant concentrate and do my work because of it.

The type of sound you describe sounds way more like the cooling fan than the hard drive. Hard drive noise is not constant...it is usually clicky like a playing card in the spokes of a bicycle ridden fairly slowly and stopping and starting as the hard drive is accessed. There is a built in hard drive checker in the BIOS...hit F10 as you boot up and loo for the hard drive test in the menus. Run the full length one and see if you get errors.

  • Why my New t61 hard drive so noisy?

I have bought my T61for just one month ago. But find the hard drive is so noisy. How about yours? is my hard drive defective? or it is normal? thanks
I 'am using XP sp3, the hard drive is HITACHI 160G 5400

I've had mine for about a month too, and it seems fine to me.  I've got the 160GB 7200RPM one (i'm not sure of the make, I don't have it on me to check).  I leave it on all the time in my room, even while I'm sleeping and it doesn't bother me one bit.  Mind you, that could be because I'm used to hearing my old M41 6792-EMU whirring so loud it sounds like its going to take off.
If it really sounds that bad, it might be a defect and contact Lenovo about obtaining a replacement.  you CAN NOT open up your drive (unless you are in a clean room, and I mean clean, an Operating Room in a hospital would be even too dirty) by yourself.  If a particle of dust or a hair lands on one of the platters, it will destroy everything once you turn it on.

  • IMac 2.8Ghz core i5 hard drive becoming noisier

My iMac which is just over over a year old has started recently to sound a tiny bit noisier. I have run Techtool Pro S.M.A.R.T module and whilst it doesn't report anything bad, the internal temperature is  slightly raised (25% to mid point). All other parameters are completely normal and at the far end of the scale. Have I got anything to worry about? Should I contact Apple?

As mentioned it is always wise to keep a current backup, I would recommend using at the least Time Machine however when it comes to backing up redundancy is a very good thing. I'd also recommend creating a bootable clone using either SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner. You will need 2 external HD's one for TM and the other for the bootable clone. The reason you ALWAYS should have 2 external HD's for redundant backups is simple, if both backups are on one physical drive and that drive fails you just lost ALL of your backup! Yes it's a more expensive solution but if your data is important to you (photos, music, financial information, work files, etc...)then backing up isn't a luxury it's critical!
As for your internal HD's health, as long as you bought AppleCare then the machine is covered for 3 years so don't worry about it, just concentrate on the backup.

  • Mac book pro + external hard drive plus desktop with ethernet router combo

Can anyone advise - for or against / solutions that might be possible as I'm considering time capsule.
    Currently
Desktop = Mac Pro - 230GB hard drive no wireless card.
One ethernet port going to router into which my broadband is piped. Out of the router - ethernet to plug in lap top in other room (hubby not so found of wireless).
Back up = 500GB external formac drive (noisy and vibrates) connected via fire wire. All my photos and music go direct to the formac drive (are not on desktop or laptop).
I do backup of documents from desktop to the external hardrive manually.
I have a mac book pro which I access the internet by the the ethernet (but don't think I can file share because of the router which I think just pipes the internet to both computers).
*What I would like to do*
    1) Access documents from the desktop vire wireless when working on laptop.
    2) Continue to store photos and music without clogging up my desktop hard drive.
    3) Get a quieter external hard drive (been noisy since day 1)
    4) Easy backup of of photos and music (at the moment only one copy exists on hard drive which I am concerned about (other than DVD).
    5) Turn wireless off when not working on laptop - hubby concerned about privacy and I work from home so have confidential material I have to guarentee is secure.
Can any one point me to whether time capsule and or other bits would meet my needs?
    Thanks - Lou

    1) is doable I use that functionality Even from Pennsylvania to Michigan
    2) I use the TC as backup for my primary hard drive although I always use two back up hard drives for my primary. I use the Finder not Time Machine.
    3) The LaCie d2 or the quadra work fine with TC. They are quiet and sleep appropriately.
    4) is doable and related to your one.
    5) secure your router and wireless setup is not a problem.
You can also use the setup of the external to interact with ATV. Like streaming movies to ATV

  • IMac hard drive problem

In the last 6 months I have had to rebuild my hardrive twice. All went well and thanks to regular back-ups I have not lost anything.
Over the last week the iMac has ground to almost a stop. Spinning beach ball regularly, back-ups not happening. I turned off Time Machine as a back-up had stalled in the getting ready process. Restarted and later that day turned on Time Machine and the back-ups progessed. As of last night the spinning beach ball is omnipresent. I managed to send one email before it started and it does not stop. Prior to that, when typing, sentences would appear in one hit after a considerable delay. The hard drive quite noisy in the background. Now its a case of open an app, if you can, and I might get one or two minutes before the spinning beach ball and the only end to it is a restart.
Is this symptematic of the hard disk about to die completely? I have tried various applications on and off to see if they are the cause but it appears to be system wide rather than app specific. What is the best software to verify and run a disk repair above that supplied with the OS? Or after two complete rebuilds should I just face the fact the hardrive is past its used by date?
The iMac is a late 2009 27 inch. Does any one have any idea what replacing the hardrive would cost? I live in regional Victoria (Australia) so actually getting the iMac serviced may also be an issue. There is a local supplier here but I seem to know more about Macs than they do which does not fill be with confidence.

What can I say … Apple you have made my day. After talking with Apple Support they have agreed to replace the hard drive in my 4 year plus iMac with a new drive at no cost to me and via the local service centre.
The drives were faulty and part of a replacement scheme that actually ended in April 2013 and the first response was that replacement was no longer valid.  However because I had been able to work through and restore the drive twice they have agreed that if I had taken it in when the drive first played up it would have been replaced under the scheme. I talked them through the fact that I had actually been penalised by being diligent and trying all avenues before contacting support and had restored the drive twice. Yes I am happy. Thank you Apple for being a Provider that listens and responds positively to individual cases and not a company that applies a blanket policy that disenfranchises loyal customers.
Should be collecting my iMac from the service centre tomorow. To celebrate I decided to bump up the RAM to max going from the original 4 MB to 16 MB - can't wait to get it back!

  • No right click on hard drives?

I'm used to filling up my hard drive pretty regularly as I do a lot of animation and video editing. I often have to check how much space I have left on my various drives. I used to be able to right click in the finder on the hard drive and it would let me do an Info on the drive. Now I have to hit command-i. Why would they remove a time saving function? Also I can't change the dock from the menu anymore... am I missing something or have they taken two steps back again?

Oops no looks like there's a bug so that you think you're in the finder, but you're actually in an app which doesn't allow right clicking. I'm not sure what's happening yet!

  • Hard drive is a little noisy

My hard drive is pretty noisy when it accesses information, opening a folder, launches an application, etc. Louder than my G5. Anyone else had this?

There isn't much clarity (or documentation) about this, but if you order the Mac Pro for delivery now, without the Airpot upgrade, you get the machine now. If you add that option for the additional fee you have to wait 4 weeks. That's because they are still developing the new "Aiport Express" card, due out in a month. Read this article:
    http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0608airportexpress.html
You can imagine my surprise when I tried to find a place to put my airport extreme card into my Mac Pro, there was no place for it to go. You can however buy a PCI Wireless card and install it in your mac and you should be good to go.

  • How noisy is your hard drive?

Can you hear yours? I've got a new 24" imac and I can hear (what I presume is) the hard drive fairly loudly which is annoying. It's a 1TB drive which has hardly anything on it and I'm only surfing the net so it seems odd to hear it so much. The noise is a sort of knocking/chuntering sound. I've had a replacement and have the same problem with that but from googling people seem to say their imacs are pretty much silent.
If this is just how they are, I'm wondering if the newly launched ones have a different hard drive which might be quieter.

Mine is very noisy and whirs upon every bootup. Spent yesterday am at Genius Bar because my iMac 24" refuses to sleep on its own. It will sleep from Apple menu and from button but not by itself from energy saver.
So I was on phone Wed evening with support. Agent didn't like the sound and made Genius Bar appt for me. Thur am the Genius Bar agent said noise on startup was normal because iMac looks for disk in drive (if there is one) in case I'm booting from it. He then set my iMac to sleep and wake from energy saver several times: no problem. Got machine home and, sure enough, won't sleep "on its own."
No idea what to do. My only reassurance is that there is a record of my having addressed the problem(s) when my warranty runs out.

  • Sometimes my computer takes too long to connect to new website. I am running a pretty powerful work program at same time, what is the best solution? Upgrading speed from cable network, is it a hard drive issue? do I need to "clean out" the computer?

Many times my computer takes too long to connect to new website. I have wireless internet (time capsule) and I am running a pretty powerful real time financial work program at same time, what is the best solution? Upgrading speed from cable network? is it a hard drive issue? do I only need to "clean out" the computer? Or all of the above...not to computer saavy.  It is a Macbook Pro  osx 10.6.8 (late 2010).

Almost certainly none of the above!  Try each of the following in this order:
Select 'Reset Safari' from the Safari menu.
Close down Safari;  move <home>/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db to the trash; restart Safari.
Change the DNS servers in your network settings to use the OpenDNS servers: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
Turn off DNS pre-fetching by entering the following command in Terminal and restarting Safari:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false

  • HT1386 Ever since I had to replace my PC hard drive, my outlook contacts and calendar no longer sync.  It acts like it's syncing, but it isn't.  I now have two hard drives - c and g, but I'm pretty sure the Outlook data is still on c.  Any other ideas?

Hello - I just had to replace the hard drive on my pc, and now my Outlook calendar and contacts won't sync to my iphone 5s.  I ended up getting two hard drives (C and G), so I'm afraid that might have something to do with it - although I'm pretty sure Outlook files still live in the normal place on C. Itunes sync acts as if it's working, but nothing changes on my phone.  Any ideas?  Thanks!!

    "2MEM/1/4: DIMM3/J14"
Replace the memory in the DIMM 3 slot.
If you are running Mac OS X 10.5 you can use this program to test your G5's memory:

It will subject your RAM to a more thorough test than Apple Hardware Test.

I'm getting S.M.A.R.T. error when trying to install Mountain lion. Hard drive works pretty well despite the Failing status. I understand that many users have been facing the same issue. My hard drive was/is working perfectly. Has Apple patched it yet?
Has someone found a solution which is not replacing the hard drive which works just fine? Or Is anyone aware of a procedure that can force the installation despite the S.M.A.R.T error? Below details of my hard drive

  • T520 500GB 7200RPM Hard Drive Noisy?

My employer gave me a T520 and the keyboard is the best I have ever used. I also own a Thinkpad Edge and like the Accutype keyboard, but I think T520 keyboard is far better.
I noticed that the T520 in the configuration I want is under $1000 now and am thinking about buying one before it is too late.
I'm thinking about getting the 500 GB 7200 RPM hard drive. I am going to assume it is made by Seagate. Is it noisy? My Thinkpad Edge had a Seagate 250 GB 5400 RPM hard drive that continuously made a shuffling noise, even when not actively being used. It was not the usual clicking noise, but lower in frequency. I'm thinking the head was being parked every time data transfer stopped just in case the drive got dropped. Or perhaps to conserve power. But that's just a guess. Whatever it was it was very irritating. I replaced it with a small SSD and everything is fine now. I also have a Seagate 500 GB 5400 RPM hard drive that I removed from an external USB drive and put into an HP laptop. It did not make the shuffling noise when it was in the external case but makes the same noise now that it is in the laptop. I'm guessing it is a Seagate thing. I used a utility called QuietHDD to adjust the acoustic parameters on both drives, and it worked, but I wonder what that does to performance and reliability. I am reluctant to use QuietHDD on a new laptop.
How noisy is the 500 GB 7200 RPM hard drive in the T520? (My employer's T520 has an SSD). Also is the 5400 RPM version less noisy? And is one more reliable? The difference in price is about $30.

the 500 gigs 7200 rpm hdd noise level is lower then the previous generations used.
The noise of the notebook hdd nowadays are mostly from the reader/writer reader moving around and not so much the spinning platter.

  • New iMac: Screen Issues and Noisy Hard Drive

    Hello,
I'm writing regarding my new 27" iMac which I purchased just under a week ago (spec: 3.1GHz Intel Core i5, 1TB HDD, 4GB RAM).
When I got my iMac home and unboxed it, all was fine, however once I had began to install some applications and use them, I noticed an unusual issue with the screen. I had a Skype window open on the left hand side of my screen, with an ongoing chat, Obviously, the chat 'stream' was moving, but the menu items on the far left remained the same. The iMac had been on for about 10mins, with the Skype window open for the same duration. After which, I opened iPhoto, and made it full screen, filling my screen with a dark grey background. I could still see the outline of the text from my Skype window through the iPhoto window. Thinking the window may have been semi-transparent, I closed the Skype window, however when I re-fullscreened iPhoto, the test was still there, as if it was burnt into the screen.
I understand the concept of screen burn, but surely this shouldn't happen after just 10mins? It's nothing permanent, as it fades away again within another 5mins or so, but it is annoying knowing that I can't leave a window open for very long without worrying I will have text burnt into my screen for a period of time. As a graphic designer, I could be working on images that are dark, and likewise, I don't want to see remains of my chat or emails over the top of my design work.
Has anyone else had this issue? Is this an issue that can be repaired by myself (eg. installing a firmware update, although I have all the latest updates from Software Update)? Or should I just return my iMac to the store and get them to look at it? I'm worried that if I take it back, they may fail to see the issue, as the lighing is a lot different in the store to at home.
The other issue I am experiencing is I have a very noisy hard drive, that seems to click and make a grumbling noise rather a lot. Obviously at times when the computer is working hard, this is to be expected (I think), although most of the time it is grumbling away whilst I'm just browsing in Safari with one tab open.
Has anyone else experienced this issue, taken it back and has a successful replacement? I've read that it could be to do with Mac OS X Lion, because people have reported that their hard drive ran silently on Snow Leopard but has got noisier with Lion. Should I wait for a Lion update before returning it? Other than the issues above, everything is fine.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I look forward to someone being able to shine some light on my issues.

    Thanks for the advice.
Today, I returned my iMac to the Apple Premium Resellers where I purchased it. The helpful chap there looked at my screen and acknowledged the issue, before giving me a brand new iMac.
My previous model came with Snow Leopard pre-installed, which I upgraded to Lion. This new, second iMac is a relatively new one as it has Lion pre-installed. Feeling hopeful, I've just arrived home and unpackaged my new computer.
The result? EXACTLY the same issue. My Twitter window on the far left of my display has been open for no longer than about 7 or 8 mins, and I can clearly see the display pictures from my follwees burnt into the screen when I full screen a dark app like Snow Leopard.
I'm wondering whether this is a Lion issue? Should I wait for a software update before returning it again? It's not something that's going to be annoying on a day-to-day basis, but now that I know it's doing it, I can't help but keep checking when I open iPhoto.
PEOPLE WITH NEW 27" iMAC's: Would you please perform the following test for me and let me know the results?
    1. Open up a white backgrounded application, such as Twitter, Skype, or Safari.
    2. Leave it on screen (anywhere, but far left seems to be worst) for about 5 to 10mins.
    3. Open up iPhoto with it's grey full screen background, or set your wallpaper to a flat colour dark grey.
    4. Now minimise the white backgrounded windows, and switch to a grey background with no windows in front of it.
    5. Look carefully at your screen: can you still see an outline of/text from the window in the position that it was, like it's burnt into the screen?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can perform this for me.

  • MacBook hard drive noisy in Windows XP

Hello, I just installed Windows XP on my new MacBook. I only did this so I could run borlandc for school. Whenever I'm working on it in XP, the hard drive starts to get noisy like when I'm working with videos or doing heavy duty stuff in Mac OS X. The only things open right now are IE and borlandc++.
    What's the problem?

Are you sure it's the hard drive and not the fan?
