I have changed the option to a manual update. The IPod will appear on Itunes but the music will not go to the library. I try and drag it there - no joy.

Shutdown the Mac. Disconnect and power off the external drive (if it has its own power supply). Reconnect the external drive and power on (if applicable). Boot Mac. If the external drive is not reading properly, open Disk Utility, select external drive, run Repair Disk.

Then I received message that 27 songs I had previously purchased and had been on my iPod were "items in iTunes not copied to iPod because not authorized to play on this computer." These songs are no longer visible on iPod but 10 or 15 songs are still there that had been there before. How can I get the missing songs onto my iPod again?

Go to the "Store" menu in your iTunes main window, and drag down to "authorize computer". This lets iTunes know that you're new computer is okay to have access to all previously purchased music.

I suspect you have the original, 1G iPod touch. Those can only go as high as iOS 3.1.3,
If y ohave a 2G those can go as high as 4.2.1

Your images are truly no longer present on the hard drive(s)? Have you had your operating system do a search for them?
If such a search fails to find them, here's what I would do, in order
Look in the trash can/recycle bin
Restore from backups
If you don't have backups ... well, why not? ... find a program on the internet called an "undelete utility" (free versons are available) and then download and install it and run it. If you are going to do this, then do not perform any other tasks on your computer except find the program, download it (if possible to a different drive than the photos were stored on), install it (if possible to a different drive than the photos were stored on), and run it. In the future, you will need to commit to making regular backups of your photos and of your Lightroom catalog file, no excuses.
If that doesn't work, but the thumbnails still appear in Lightroom, you can probably recover the thumbnails from Lightroom via a plug-in, but these would be low-resolution versions of your photos, if you really need instructions on this step, write back

You can only deauthorise individual computers directly on them. Otherwise if you've reached the 5 computer limit, then you should be able to log into your iTunes account and 'deauthorise all' (which you can only do once every 12 months) and you can then (re-)authorise up to 5 computers : authorising and deauthorising.

It felt as if maybe a virus was at work but I ran Sophos and found nothing.
I store images on my Drobo Raid system but when I work from my Macbook Pro I have no issues, just on the tower.

First of all, why did you say yes to Nero Back up before researching what it does with files already on the HDD? When I install Nero, the Back Up is the first thing I disable, it is a nagging pain, there are much better backup programs available. There are several file recovery programs out there to recover deleted files, that is, if that is what happened. Also, if you haven't overwritten the files, so you should be able to find them.

Those Apps would not transfer from your iPhone because the iPhone apps are iOS 5 based and the iMac apps are OSX based. They are not the same Apps. You will need to transfer the OSX based apps over from your external hardware backup you have kept up, Or you can reinstall the OSX based apps from their original DVD's.

Can't get songs from my iPod into the library on my new mac

I recently had to get a new hard-drive on my dell laptop, and iTunes was uninstalled from the computer. When I re-installed iTunes, my iPod was not being recognized by the laptop, so none of my songs on my iPod were in the library anymore.
Now I have a new MacBook, and my iPod is being recognized, but I can't get most of my songs from my iPod into the library in iTunes.
I'm sure there is an easy solution, but I can't figure it out!
Any help is much appreciated!!!

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.

My mac book pro's hard drive was recently failing, so I went to get it fixed and upgrade to leopard. I thought that my itunes purchases (specifically TV shows and audiobooks) could be downloaded again once I got the computer back, because I had not synced them with my ipod. Is there a way for me to re-download these purchases?

If you didn't make a back-up of your purchases to restore from (as you are advised to do) then I'm sorry to say that the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage." iTunes Store: Purchased content can be downloaded only once
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so.
