My harddrive crashed and my library is gone...is there hope?

My question is, if I plug my ipod classic into my NEW laptop, will I still have lost my entire library/ the ipod will be swept clean, or will the songs from my ipod transfer to the new laptop?
Please help me!

Thanks very much for the help! I'm still a little confused though...sorry for being so utterly ipod-illiterate. I understand how to put it into Disc Mode now...but how do I go about putting it onto my new computer after that? Will plugging it in just automatically transfer (which reminds me I still need ot install itunes) the music into the library?
Again, I'm so sorry for being a pest!

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

system crashed and lost library, want to recover

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't know how to fix the xml file or prevent it's damage except to keep a current backup copy of the domain.sites2 file. You can do that on an hourly basis with Time Machine or use a backup application like Synk Standard which can do incremental backup (i.e. copy just those new or changed files) at any time.
As for separating the sites into their own domain files I use iWebSites to manage over 75 individual sites. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your original Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process and move it to another location on your HD until you're satisfied the separation process is completed and what you want.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want.
There is a downside to this method if you're publishing to MobileMe. When publishing multiple sites to MMe from their own separate domain file the last published site will be the default site when using the default URL for that MMe account: http://web.me.com/MobileMeAccountName/. That could mess up any CNAME forwarding if you have a domain name pointed to your default MMe site.

  • How to add itunes to new computer when old harddrive crashed and itunes is on 5 computers now

My computer's harddrive crashed and i purchased a new computer but i have itunes on the limit of 5 computers now and cannot deauthorize the broken computer

You should be able to de-authorise all of your computers via your account (which you can do once every 12 months), and you can then re-authorise the computers that you still have and need : authorising and de-authorising

my harddrive crashed.  we just got another one and we need to know how to re-instate my itunes account where I have already purchased music

First you need to verify whether the files themselves are gone or if it is just the library that doesn't see them.
If the files are gone you may be able to get Apple to let you redownload them.

  • Aperture 2 crashes and looses library

When I got my Imac I purchased Aperture 2 with it.  I have tried to use it over the years but it was a bit to advanced for me.  Recently I found an online course program to teach me how to use editing software including Aperture 2.
I have been loading libraries from my camera and from my Iphoto library.  I will be in the process of editing the photos when Aperture crashes.  I go to reopen the program and the entire library ( happened once) or the last loaded library is gone.  Hours of work down the tube.
Very frustrated and very dissapointed in why this is happening.

    Hey dkaufmn,
Take a look at the following document. Even though it says Aperture 3, most of the troubleshooting steps apply to 2 and should help you resolve the crashes:

  • Harddrive crashed, are all the bookmarks gone?

so my mac crashed and the hardrive is a goner. just got a new harddrive installed, old one cannot be recovered. is there anyway of recovering the bookmarks from firefox used in old hd?

If you use(d) the Time Machine on your Mac then you can try to restore the places.sqlite file or a JSON backup (bookmarks-####-##-##.json) in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • ARG!  My harddrive crashed and I lost everything! Anyway to recover?

I had tons of music I purchased from iTunes, and I also have and use an iPod (one of the cheap little shuffles). Anyway, my hard drive crashed and I was unable to recover anything, so had to get a new harddrive and rebuild my computer. So now I am left with nothing but what was already on my iPod. Now I want to transfer the songs I do have on my iPod to my new iTunes, on the new hard drive, and curious if I'm able to recover any of the music through iTunes that I purchased? Do they keep a record of that stuff by chance? Am I able to redownload anything I purchased?
Also, how do I get the songs off my iPod now and onto my computer? It gave me an option to Transfer songs from my iPod to the iTunes here but so far it didn't work.. just transfered 3 very odd songs I've never seen before in my life.
    Thanks for any help!

I'm not sure if both of these methods will work with a Shuffle but some of the third party utilities specifically say they do. There is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
For a more automated solution then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. Have a read through for mention of an iPod Shuffle.

  • I just updated to 8.1 and my library is gone, but still on my iPod touch

I just updated my iTunes to 8.1. I restarted my computer, and when iTunes started again, my library was gone. i was able to get my apps back by using the transfer purchases option, but i have no idea how to get everything else back. please help as soon as possible. Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to AD!
Maybe the itunes database file just didn't get updated properly.
Have you seen this article on looking for an ITL file in the Previous iTunes Library folder?
There should be a file dated from today when you upgraded itunes.

  • Just opened iTunes, and my library is gone! I have some questions..

I just got home and opened iTunes, and my library was empty. I had alot of music and playlists and stuff, everythings gone.
I connected my iPod to the computer and erased everything off my iPod, then added all the music back to my library from various folders on my computer (what a headache).. It was really annoying and took alot of time.
Why did this happen? I've never had any problems before. How can I prevent it from happening again? And if it does happen again, is there anyway I can get my playlists and ratings back? I know I can copy my entire library from my iPods hard drive, but I don't want to do that because I already have the music on my computer and it would just waste space.
    Thanks!

You'll be able to download previous iTunes Store purchases in iTunes.

  • Help Please! My Harddrive crashed and Final Cut wont start!

Hi, I'm new to the forum and I was wondering if somebody could give me some advice on what to do if one's Harddrive crashed, was deconnected from the Computer and now Final cut Express HD asks me to reset volumes when I start the programme? If I do so would I loose any data on my new External Harddrives?
One of my Hard drives crashed last week when I was trying to burn a movie on DVD and I have a new one now, Final cut used to use two of my Hard Drives, one of which is still working- but it wasn't used as a source anymore when I crashed last week, since it was full...would my new Hard Drive and the old Hard Drive be affected by this command?
I know it is a bit complicated, but Thank you very much for your help!

Thank you very much for your reply...
The problem was the following, my PowerBook has a 60 GB capacity for saving things (please excuse my terminology)...that wasn't enough so I connected external harddrives to save my media files and movies etc etc. The hard drive that contained my media files is fine, but the one with the edited version of the movies crashed and deleted everything. So I got a new harddrive and started over...got no message, imported the media files into a new project and edited again, but this new harddrive crashed again and deleted everything too. So I wanted to start over once again with a new harddrive today and connected both the new harddrive and the one with the media files to the Powerbook, but suddenly when starting Final Cut Express, this message appeared:
In order not to loose any data this path is neccessary: ''The name of my deleted harddrive that isn't connected to the computer''- missing and I have three options: Quit, Retry or Reset Volumes
Now I should maybe specify that while I was editing the last time, I frequently got the message that my memory was full and I should choose a different hard drive for FCE to do the automatic saving on, so I selected my larger new hard drive(the 2nd one that crashed) as opposed to the selected one from before with my media files on it, which had reached the end of its capacity (in 'Settings' or 'PreSettings').
Now my worry is that something will be reset on my old and new new hard drive that I don't want to be reset, but I cant edit my movie if I don't find a solution to this...I'm so sorry about this being very confusing probably...but Thank you very much in advance for your help!

  • Hi have been using the classic for 4 years, of late whenever i load more than 4000 songs the ipod crashes and shuts down. till 3800 songs there seems to be no problem. do ipods have a finite life?

the classic ipod has crashed 4 times in the last 2 months. till i load 3800 to 3900 songs there seems to be no problem. but after that it just crashes and instructs me to restore to factory settings. just want to know if ipods have a finite life and need changing after this. i need urgent help at least if that is true i can save the trouble of loading songs every other week
    thanks and regards

Yep, iPod classic has life of about 2 years before the hardisk, starts to suffer from arthritis.
Here is a excellent post on iPod  diskdiagnostic by regular tt2.

You can also look into getting the iPod hardisk replaced by SSD/Compact Flash,  just google "iPod SSD replacement" or you can search in youtube, on how to do it yourself, if you got steady hands and hawkeye.
    SSD Capacity is expensive,

  • My iMac harddrive crashed and was replaced and I would like to put my iTunes library back in to computer off my iPod. Is it possible and how do I do it?

I just got my Mac back with a new hard drive. I lost part of my iTunes library but it was saved before the loss of the hard drive on my iPod Classic. Is it possible to use the iPod as an external hard drive and regain my library on my computer? If so, how do I do it?
