My harddrive is messed up

Every minute or two my harddrive starts making a grinding noise and the ibook freezes up. When the grinding noise stops the ibook unfreezes. Oh what am I to do?

Hi
Well, does your iBook have a motion sensor, because that will instantly lock the harddrive to prevent damage. It's suppose to do that. Is your iBook the late 2004-model like mine? My harddrive just died yesterday after it had been buzzing for a few weeks. And I am most likely going to lose everything on the HD because I'm stupid enough not to backup my stuff. So to be sure, maybe just make sure you backup your data. And it's never a good idea to tip your computer when it's turned on. And I don't think you should be pushing down on it like that unless you mean that it happens when you are resting your hand on it.

  • Lost harddrive access messed up permissions?

I have an 400GB internal drive with three partions. I was trying to set the permissions for the harddrive so that only one user can access it. Now no users can access it at all. I see the harddrive in my Disk Utility but it looks like a piece of paper with a folder corner and not like the usual icon. How can I gain access to this drive again? Do I have to erase the drive? I do not want to loose the data on the drive.
I have tried to repair permissions, etc but nothing seems to work.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thank you.
    G5 1.6 Ghz, 2 GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   (2) 250 GB External Drives, 20" CInema Display

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and
enter /Volumes/ as the folder's location. Next, open
the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder
while keeping the Volumes folder open. Type the
    following into the window:
    chmod 755
followed by a space. Drag the volume in question into
the Terminal window and press Enter. Log out and back
    in, and see if the drive reappears on your desktop;
Thanks for the help it worked like a charm. One further question I have is what did I do wrong? For example if I want to make a harddrive (or limit access to a folder) on an external harddrive to one user how do I go about doing that? I was just changing the permissions in the dialogue boxes but that does not seem to work. Perhaps there is a key step I am missing.

  • Alot of issues. bad harddrive?

    i have a 30gb 5th gen ipod,
and there are many things wrong with it.
first it responds very slowly when using it,
it will play a few songs, but then it will freeze, the back of it gets very hot, and i hear strange clicking noises coming from it, and if i don't reset it, it will literally start shaking on the table.
i don't know much about how ipods are built, but could this have something to do with the harddrive being messed up?
also, i just got a new computer because my old one crashed completely.
and i do not have my library backed up.
i tried numerous times to copy it to this computer using software such as yumipod and sharepod, but it will only do a few songs before the program stops responding, and i have to close it and restart my computer and try it again,
it does the same thing with every program.
i was going to restore the ipod to see if that helps,
but i don't want to do that without a back up of my music.
is there any other way to save my music?
i was thinking about taking it to the apple store but with previous ipods i've owned that had any problems, all that they would do is tell me it is corrupted and hand me a replacement one,
and if that happens i will still lose all of my music..
does anybody know what i can do to try to save my ipod, and most importantly my music?
or should i just give up hope on this thing..?
    thankyou:)

All Apple refurbished products carry a 1 year warranty.  This implies they are fit for purpose.  Excepting minor damage like scratches and abrasions, everything else should be in order with the device itself.  Exchange or ask for a refund.  If still not happy then you can always take the matter up with a consumer group or trading standards.
I would be a little bit wary of any device that had an ill fitting case, it might be due to something not being positioned correctly.  Apple have a good reputation on the warranty side, so dont be afraid to exercise your consumer rights.
Personally, I would take it back for another.

  • Filled the hard drive, now it won't find hardrive on start.

Was recording video straight to Imac hard-drive. Was a bit careless in watching space being taken up and in the middle of day two for auditions my computer shuts down, "BLACKOUT". Power back on the thing with the feeling I filled the HD space. I was down to the megabytes . Ever-since the computer has run SUPER Slow at processing anything for a week now.
    Note:
Vital Data on Hardrive I need so can't just wipe it clean.
Attempt 1: Disk repair with OS Disc. There was an inconsistency in file count and repair was sucessful. But computer runs really slow and actually doesn't even start anymore, shows folder with question mark. #fail
Attempt 2: TARGET DISK MODE Tried copying the files to another mac with Imac in target disk mode but transfer is speed ridiculous. I'm talking about moving 254megabytes and it taking over 15minutes and gets stuck at 10megabytes. #fail
Attempt 3: Maybe its just overheating due to whatever. Dropped some fans in the area to keep it even cooler. Circulating the hot air away and introducing the rooms AC, lol #fail
Need help!! Before I bring this thing to be looked at anyone has a solution? Figured I filled the harddrive and messed up vital space the computer needs to operate with.

Macs need a minimum of 10-15% of the HD space left available to run well, considering you have managed to fill yours up you can either suffer through the offloading some files to an external HD or start over. If you have backed up, then I'd recommend doing an erase and install then restoring from your backup. Then you can start with a clean slate and manage you space better, if you haven't been backing in up and your system is so full you cannot offload files I'm afraid you're out of luck and are in the process of learning a tough lesson.

  • Stuck at blue Login screen

Hello. I am experiencing an issue with my laptop, a G61 421SO model, and the issue is showed in a Youtube video. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7FIDt9SonQ The issue occured after I let my cousin played The Sims 4. She said that after she closed Sims 4, a window appeared and she clicked it away, and shut down the laptop. The next day I started it, and it remained stuck at the screen which is showed in the video. She unfortunately does not remember what the pop up window showed.  I tried hard resetting, letting the laptop rest for 24 hours, resetting BIOS settings and doing tests (which of all were successful and not showing any errors) and leaving it turned on for 1h+ in attempt to let it load. I have a theory that either the harddrive is messing up or the OS is somehow failing to load properly. As I am unable to access the harddrive and the data in it, how can this issue be fixed without losing any important, meaningful data; e.g Pictures?  Thank you!

  • Re-locate masters

    Dear all,
after I have sorted (and some deleted) my photos in Aperture i'd like my referenced masters to be organised as well.
now they are all still in the network storage disk (not moved or deleted).
What would be the best way to do that?
i was thinking to export to a new library, but that only results in a huge library file, and i'd like to work with references.
    Any help is very welcome,
    thanks
    elwin

    Hi,
    thanks for your interest;
i used to have my photos in many folders on my harddrive, all messed up. I asked Apeterture so find all images on my (remote) harddisk.
In aperture i sorted and deleted so that became a nice structure, and i'd like to have this structure in my remote hard drive as well (and deleted all i deleted in Aperture).
So what i thought to do is export to create a new library (including the orignals), so then i'll have a few libraries where i then need to make the masters remote again.

  • Tried to transfer iTunes library to an external harddrive--messed it all up

I have a large collection of music--some of it in mp3/wav files (pre-iTunes), and the rest of it was downloaded directly from either the iTunes store or Amazon.com.
I had my iTunes library edited and perfected exactly the way I wanted it, but after downloading some television series from iTunes, I was running out of space on my harddrive. Things were moving pretty slow on old C:, and I thought I could help things out by moving my music files (including all iTunes music and television files), video files, and eBook files to an external harddrive.
I tried to follow some online directions, but the instructions were written for an earlier version of iTunes, so I improvised a few steps. I really screwed it up. I tried to combine all of the content from "My Music" and "iTunes Music" into a massive file on my external drive called "G:/MUSIC". I thought if I changed the library location in iTunes that it would recognize the new location, and everything would be fine. Unfortunately, when I reopened iTunes, the entire library was blank.
I tried File-->Add Folder to Library-->G:/MUSIC, and it imported some of the music, but not all of it. The music it did import had a lot of the old typos and category errors that I had previously fixed when my iTunes library was on my C: drive. It did not import any of the subfolders containing music from the previously existing “iTunes Music” folder. When I tried to add one of the folders that contained music I recently purchased from iTunes, it was not visible to me via the “Add Folder” option. When I open my G: drive in Windows Explorer, all of my iTunes music folders are visible.
I still have old library files, but I don’t know enough about iTunes to know how to fix this mess I’ve created. I haven’t deleted anything--if something isn’t on my G: drive, it is probably in my Recycle Bin, which has not been emptied.
Can anyone help me? I feel like a complete idiot for making this mess. Clearly, I had no idea what I was doing.
    Thanks in advance,
    Carrie

How do i reformat back so i can reload my mac os! Cause when i got into disk utility the i cant erase the disk or load mac os on it because it is NTFS!

Try to re-partition your HD using DiskUtility. Don't select the NTFS part but the physical drive in left column.

  • Images broken in design view on new computer paths leading to old harddrive?

I recently got a new imac and installed cs5 dreamweaver ( I was using dreamweaver 8 but it no longer works in mountain lion) . I redfined the site all was fine then I must have done something and now suddenly all my images are broken in design view and in brower and live view! The site shows the images online from the server but everything is broken in design view. The directory is a mess as I used way too may subfolders when I first did the site but it's too large to start over. I tried deleting the site from my harddrive all together and creating a new folder for it and just getting the entire site from the server but the images still don't show. I don't want to have to go to every page on the site and fix broken links! I can pull an image into a page by browsing to the folder on my harddrive but they are not appearing anymore on their own. If the images were uploaded originally from another computer and the folder being used now for the site on my harddrive is different that won't break the image paths will it? It all worked fine until a few days ago. What I don't understand is I thought the images wouldn't show if they were only on the server and not on my harddrive but since I just GOT the site from the server, all the images ARE now on my harddrive in the new folder so why still nothing showing? I I tried right clicking the broken images and showing design notes they seem to be lookin for a path to my old computer where the harddrive was named differently than it is now. Is there ANY way to fix this? What about renaming my harddrive to the old name?
Greatful for any advice but I am very much a newbie so not sure I will be able to do what I need to.
    Mary Ann

Spaces in folder/filenames are not a good practice.  Space are converted to %20 on the server.  DW's Design View often can't reconcile this.  Best advice is to remove the spaces and use underscores _ or hyphens -
    Rename this:

Also, you have a misplaced <head> tag.  It needs to be above the Dynamic drive Javascript code.
    <head>
         <script> </script>

  • I have the most messed up iTunes/Mac ever at the moment.

Hello. This is going to take a while to explain, but thank you in advance if you are brace enough to tackle this problem.
    This is how it started..
I had an itunes library already and it was perfectly sorted etc. I don't know what was going on behind the scenes in terms of music folders etc, but in itunes it looked great. Then I took some music off my friends mac. Basically I wasn't thinking at the time so I should dragged and dropped whatever I wanted into myhardrive without creating a folder or anything (Like i said i wasn't thinking). Then when it came to putting the new (1000 songs approx) onto my laptop I stupidly just command + A'd my entire harddrive and copy and pasted it into itunes. So needless to say everything in my harddrive, like my past back ups of my mac etc, went into my itunes. It took hours to transfer over by which time i was starting to realise my mistake and sobbed whilst leaving it on over night to finish transferring.
Anyway thats the first catalyst in the construction of this mess..The plot, unfortunately, thickens.
My itunes obviously had ALOT of duplicates and through running a little experiment with a song i didnt care about losing i noticed that if you 'display duplicates' and delete all the duplicates this doesnt leave ANY copies of the song in itunes, which is beyond annoying and almost makes the feature redundant, for my needs anyway. I also had all the random mac 'sounds' and random things that shouldnt have been in itunes due to me copying EVERYTHING from my harddrive into poor itunes.
So I recruited some help from a friend. This was his plan: Delete everything in itunes, go back on time machine and back up itunes from there so i was back to the position i was in before transferring everything from the harddrive and then going back into my harddrive and importing the music in a more organised, less hasty manner. So he backed up my itunes as it was just incase something went wrong. This took a good half hour and he named the folder 'new old itunes'. Then he deleted the contents of itunes and went backin itunes to my last back up and restored itunes. However this is where things start to go more wrong. There was lots of stuff missing, as if the back up hadnt worked. Like the albums would be incomplete etc. So we went into the folder mentioned above 'new old itunes' and in there too there was music missing. If you clicked on an album it would be empty or only have 3 tracks when there should be like 15 or whatever.
Anyway he had to go, so i started doing some investigating and the music is still on my mac, just in random folders. so one particular song for instance wouldnt be in my itunes, wouldnt be in the back up, wouldnt be in the 'old new itunes' but if i searched for the track name in finder i would find it in other folders.
I know im getting a bit sketchy on the finer details but im not 100% what my friend did, this isnt his fault just itunes and mac acting funky but its even worse now. Anyway I seem to have multiple copies of lots of music. The music from the import that messed everything up is still on my mac in random places and needless to say, due to all these duplicates all over the place, my mac is full to the brim so i need to delete stuff but am unsure of what is safe to delete!
There is probably stuff i have missed out that if you suggest something to me i might reply saying that i have tried that and explain why it didnt work, please dont think im being rude. I've spent many hours trying to sort this and i think i have probably inadvertently messed it up more! I have delete the folder mentioned above, but it is still in my trash so could get it again, but as mentioned it is incomplete anyway.
If someone has any clue how to solve this i would be very very grateful, im so sad about it. I like having my itunes all nice!
Basically i want all the music, pre-mess up and all the new music on my harddrive to be in my itunes all nice and stuff.
Many thanks in advance and I'm sorry that its a long one and ive been lacking in grammar and punctuation alot.

Well, indeed that does not sound like a fun situation to be in. But, it is VERY good you are using Time Machine.
Let me explain, that there are two options when it comes to storing files in iTunes. When you import files, it will either leave the file in its original location on the hard drive and iTunes will know its location, or it will copy the file and store it in Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/Artist_Name/Album_Name/, IF you have the option enabled titled "Keep iTunes Media folder organized."
I imagine you have it set to copy everything into the iTunes Media folder, which explains why your hard drive is filling up. Otherwise no extra space would have been taken up.
    Therefore, my recommendation is this:
Quit iTunes first. Then navigate to ~/Music in Finder, then Enter Time Machine. Restore the ENTIRE iTunes folder in that location from a previous backup that occurred BEFORE this whole thing happened. Depending on how much space you have left on your hard drive, it may be wise to first delete the entire current iTunes folder. The restore could take a long time, depending on how much data you have in iTunes.
This will guarantee you get back to a previous library, exactly as it was at that date and time. Yes, it may be a bit overkill but it is by far the simplest solution. Hope that works!

  • I wrote a 27 chap. book on my iMac from ****. B4 I was completely finished, I spent hundreds of hours on-line and in store, and final answer after atty was involved was 1) we've never seen it b4 2) we don't know what it is 3) it's not ur harddrive, softw

finished, at about 26 chaps, 1) hard-drive went out, 2) visited site & then got "ur virus is infected buy us now" pop-ups (only time in 3 year. of using a mac, and 3) (forget what but an issue. Spent hours on-line, and at store. And finally w/an attorney when I kept being told it was user error. (I"m getting to book isssue I promise)  During this time, Harddrive was wiped, external b-up replaced, something about "separated" etc. etc. and even computer replaced w/same issues afterward. Final vrdict 1 yr. later: 1_ we've never seen it 2_ we don't know what it is--not a virus, not harddrive malfunciton, not software issue 3_ we don't know how to fix it. Live w/it w/multiple errors and oddities every time you try to type or start all over. Got an attorney, and took it in again, and miractulously, "he" fixed it. However, in meantime, I wrote many duplicate chapts. when I couldn't find missing, or edited, some, etc.
Everything was writen in Pages, chapt. by chapt. Now I have a 27 chap. book(my first)  in pieces--w/many duplicate or slightlychanged chapters  all over the computer. I'm trying to reconstruct. Some chaps. I just can't find, some are garbled, some do strange things like left justifying and changing to single space (and can't change back to double, just have to erase and start over,  on those old documents. Needless to say I have felt so defeated it's been really hard to get back to the almost finished book for last re-write.
The Questions:  1)I'm trying to find the chapters, and as I find and edit them I need to know how to make this massive achievement work. Should I continue w/chapter by chapt until all are finished? Or start putting them into single document as they are finished? How do I find anything? If I put finished in PDF to send to publisher, even tho it's my PDF, I can't go back and edit my own, except in a duplicate entire document, is that correct?
I cant' find the string to start unraveling this mess. I do have hardcopies made and presented to writing group so need to edit those chapters.
I'm used to paper typewritten copies of everything for manipulation, and I know things now I should have done on the Mac but didn't when I started. (I"m also having trouble getting a Table of Contents to work, which is making it doubly hard to find anything.)
To sum it up, I think, How do I write a book, with chapters (no technical sstuff, only a few footnotes & I may group them at the back of the book.) as far as manipulating documetns/folders, have ready for export, etc.   Probably too long a question so go ahead and chew me out.  (And I havent' used any other document except Text Edit in years.) I am overwhelmed an book is wasting away.

If you are wondering why you are not getting any responses, it is because you have vented a complaint without any details that make any sense or give anyone something to work on.
If you want help, I suggest actually detailing what has happened, with versions of software etc. Anything that would let us assist.
As a start I am guessing that you have not really got the hang of "How it all works". Firstly download the Pages09_UserGuide.pdf from under the Help menu. Read that and view the Video Tutorials in the same place. A good addition would be the iWork 09 Missing manual book and something to help you learn how to use your Mac.
If there are specific tasks you need help with:

  • I've been having some issues relating to two of my harddrives...

As mentioned at the bottom of my post with my specs, I use the 40gb SSD for boot and primary applications and the Caviar Black 1tb (I haven't re-installed the second one yet I'm lazy) for everything else, ie files I am using, programs that take up huge quantities of disk space, etc.
The other day I noticed that my downloads in jDownloader had stopped and after checking for the error noticed I had 0kb free on my 1tb harddrive. How I filled up over 100gb in less than a day still confuses me as I can't find many "big" files/stuff to delete and get back to over 100+gb free. I may end up having to go through each and every folder on it to see what the **** is taking up so much room, but to my knowledge there is no where near 1tb of data on it (that I knowingly want on it...).
That aside, my main problem just happened (and may or may not be related to that problem I just mentioned): Something just ate up all my free harddrive space on my boot drive within the last hour (I know I had at least 2gb free on it). At 0kb free on the boot drive, every single application I had open crashed. I was using Compressor to convert some videos (on the 1tb harddrive) and also downloading some video (~5gb total) through jDownloader to the 1tb harddrive. I also had a few other programs open (but only idle) which were Firefox, Chrome, iTunes, Quicktime 7, Word, and Excel.
After quitting everything and rebooting etc I only have 89mb free on my boot harddrive...the other day I am positive there was over 2gb on it! I have not installed anything on it in last few weeks and nothing is stored on it besides the occasional desktop document for easy access; everything else goes to the 1tb drive. I tried looking for stuff to delete on the 40gb SSD but I honestly have no idea what just consumed all my remaining free space; I have nothing on there but applications and application data so I have no idea where to even look for stuff to delete.
Any help here as to why on two separate harddrives Ive zeroed out my free space on two separate occasions? Is it something I may be doing without knowing it? Is there something messed up with my computer?
EDIT: 5 minutes after posting this I found 700mb of store iTunes album artwork which I deleted. This had obviously been there for weeks so I know it was not the "problem" in taking up all the free space, but I DID however notice that over the next couple of minutes I lost anywhere from 10-20mb in free space on the drive. Only applications running: firefox (which I relaunched 10 min ago), little snitch (currently disabled), and last.fm audioscrobble (idle).
WHY AM I LOSING ALL THIS SPACE ON MY TWO HARDDRIVES? I have nothing left to delete to keep freeing space up!
EDIT #2: Correction: over last 5 or so minutes the free space on my harddrive has dropped from 690mb to 657mb.

When the story gets long, helps to have a short summary and bullet points.
SSD: do not zero - hope you checked into that first. AT this point, you need to reformat and restore it. And 40GB may be on the small size.
No matter what you do, the system drive does a lot of work also all the time with temp files, paging etc.
Zero - some minimal value before partitioning, I don't see any for doing so to free space. And it has to lock all the space to do its operations.
Even on an SSD, but for any drive and boot volume more so, keep 10GB or 10% (larger of the two) of free space minimum.
There are a number of threads and help on vanishing free space in "Using Mac OS X Snow Leopard"
I suggest booting from another hard drive and running DU First Aid at a minimum.
Look at your drive with OmniDiskSweeper to see what and where.
The BEST tool for formatting drives and SSDs would be SoftRAID bar none, and especially for setting up a drive to begin with.
http://www.softraid.com - check features and the pdf guides
Use your 4-5 drive bays, system, scratch and editing, media files, user data, and one for backup (not a fan of TimeMachine but of cloned volumes).

  • Issues with multiple harddrives

I have multiple harddrives. I have a desktop, a laptop, and an external HD that I use to go between them. Because I get most of music from my friends, I have all of the music on my harddrive. When I plug my harddrive into any other computer, nothing shows up on itunes, (I have itunes installed on the actual harddrive for ease of use)unless I have already added the My Music folder on the harddrive into my library. The problem is, any changes I make to my library only seem to apply to the itunes on my hardrive. When I try to load up my documents on any other HD or computer, most things get messed up.
Anyway, I did some small scale testing and it seems the only real solution is to convert everything to AAC, but there are 2 problems I have with that. First of all, I have 60 GB of music, at least 50 of which is in MPEG, so it would take possibly even several days. This isn't really a big deal, but it's still a concern. The second concern is much bigger, and that's sound quality. I noticed no difference in the 2 or 3 albums I already converted, but that was on my computer, which has kind of mediocre speakers. My headphones, though, have very high quality sound, and I'm worried that the conversion will ruin my sound quality. I have bad ears though. If it's the kind of difference that you can only just barely notice with a side by side comparison, then I won't notice it at all.
So basically, my question is this: Will converting to AAC badly damage my music's quality, and is there any easier way to keep my itunes organized in a way where I can transfer it from HD to HD without loss of organization?
    Thanks in advance.

No idea on your converting to AAC question.
iTunes doesn't have a "Monitor folder" like Windows Media Player does, and if you move songs around outside of iTunes, it won't know where they are.
There are some 3rd-party applications that can do it, though, if you google for them. I don't use any, so can't rate any of them for you.

  • Help!! I attempted to restore my macbook pro to factory settings, but messed up!!!

I dirtied up my harddrive using migration assistant with outdated &amp; not properly functioning software when I purchased my macbook pro retina, so I decided to try to restore it to factory settings. Heres where I will start to look like an idiot: I used the command+R method during startup to get to utilities, and then erased everything there (the hard disk + another mounted drive that came from migration assistant) because I thought I was supposed to. I then tried to startup my computer again but instead of a grey apple logo at the loading screen, there was a flashing question mark. Is this problem fixable if I take it to the apple stor&amp;e? Am I hopeless?

Ok no worries! This is what needs to happen!
You have the flashing question mark which means that there is no operating system on the hard drive. What you need to do is obtain a copy of either lion or mountain lion from another mac. You need to first make a bootable usb drive with lion or mountain lion on it. You can re download mountain lion from the app store or use the current version running on that mac.
    See this article.....
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/08/make-a-bootable-mac-os-x-10-7-lion-installer-from -a-usb-flash-drive/
it is such an easy thing to do it isn't even funny.
You then need to turn off the messed up computer and then insert the usb drive. Hold the OPTION key down while booting up the mac. You will then choose the usb drive from the boot up disks. The you must go to disk utility and format the macintosh or the sub disk 1.
After doing that, close the utilites windows and return to the menu with the option to reinstll the os x operating system. Follow the on screen instructions there and you will be good to go. This whole procces can be done within a couple hours.

  • How Can I Reinstall OSX Without Messing Up Bootcamp?

I have my iMac harddrive partitioned with a Windows and Mountain Lion drive, and the M.L partition has begun to slow down and it's also got quite cluttered and so I want to do a fresh install. How do I do this without messing up the Windows drive because last time i tried to do it I could not boot into the Windows drive afterwards and had to reformat the drive.
I have the Mountain Lion installer on a thumb drive.
    Thanks.

    2. install boot runner
